calling it an inside job. from shanksville to san francisco, thousands gather this week to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 action news at 6:00. good evening, i'm jana katsuyama. heather holmes is off tonight. and i'm ken wayne, an armed robber triggered an overnight standoff with police at a local supply store in emoryville, police say it appears to be an inside job. >> reporter: racing to a robbery in progress, the oakland s.w.a.t. officers surrounded this office depot store, as they took positions overnight. police used a loud speaker, trying to negotiate with standard man locked inside, but he wouldn't come out. later the s.w.a.t.

team moved in, found the man hiding in a crawl space, ending this six-hour-long standoff. >> bottom line, it was peaceful, no significant injuries to the public or the suspect himself. so the situation is resolved, we're all going home. >> reporter: this all got started at about 9:30 last night, when police say the man came in the store looking for cash last night at closing time. when officers pulled up moments later they surrounded the place, saw workers running, the employees who escaped the store told the police the man with the gun was wearing a disguise when he came in, one of these masks, from the movie, v-for- vendetta, and investigators now say this accused armed robber got help from somebody on the inside. police have arrested an office depot employee who they say let the man into the store to carry out the crime.

nobody from the store would talk to us today about the arrest or the co-worker. ktvu. and police in san rafael is under arrest tonight, suspected of beating a 46-year-old woman to death. police say robert lee bradley was arrested yesterday morning, when they say police found the woman's body in her home on harbor street. bradley was in the house. police say bradley was dating the victim. her identity is not yet public. and a partial evacuation is in effect right now at the washington national dulles airport in virginia, police say a bomb-sniffing dog alerted the police to the cargo being loaded on the plane today. several evacuations were happening as a precaution, other flights sent to other gates. an ordinance team is on the scene, investigating the cargo. as the nation marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, san francisco leaders held a ceremony today in honor of the victims.

ktvu has more on the message for the city leaders, john? >> reporter: ken, outside here, city hall and the city police and firefighters sent a very strong message to the east coast. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> reporter: hundreds of san francisco firefighters and police officers stood at attention for the national anthem. >> ♪ ♪ ♪ and the rockets red glare. >> reporter: along with city leaders they paid tribute to those who lost their lives 10 years ago. >> let's use again the words of president lincoln, that we can increase the notes to the measure of devotion, that they shall not have died in vain. >> we does almighty god to bless those's those in the past. >> reporter: and one described the impact of losing so many

new york firefighters. >> 343 is unimaginable. and the loss suffered by the fire service and the police, was felt all over. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi attended the ceremony. >> we're all united in our sorrow, and how impressed we were by the courage of our first responders, how they came to the rescue and to the recovery. >> reporter: the memorial ended with taps. ♪ ♪ ♪ mayor ed lee has a message for the east coast. >> we're there with you, we're there, as san francisco people, we're there as americans that we not only stand together as one country, but we'll be there to send whatever we can help with anything that happens. >> reporter: every fire station in the city is hosting its own memorial tomorrow morning at 6:45, and the public is invited. live, san francisco, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 action news. and authorities say there is no evidence that three al- qaeda operatives have entered the country from pakistan in order to plant a car bomb.

but new york city and washington are on high alert this weekend after reports of a credible threat. president obama has ordered his national security team to oversee anti-terrorism efforts, extra officers are conducting checkpoints, bomb squads and s.w.a.t. teams are standing by. and security is up at california airports this weekend. at l.a.x., they are using bomb sniffing dogs to help and they are employing more help at the terminals, they do not expect scheduling delays. police are also paying special attention to the civic center, bart and the golden gate bridge. and former new york mayor rudy giuliani is focusing attention nationally. and on behalf of the republican party. >> people often say is it safer now than before september 11th? the answer is yes, but not as safe as we should be. >> he also says that he

believes the attacks didn't break our country's spirit as intended but made us more united. rudy giuliani is scheduled to be in new york for a ceremony honoring the victims. and tribute for those who lost their lives on september 11th. craig boswell is in new york city with today's emotional event. >> reporter: ken, good evening to you here at the 9/11 memorial and the world trade center. the stage is set for the dedication. like you say across the country, the heros and victims are being honored and remembered. >> we're here today to remember and honor 40 men and women who gave their lives so others could live theirs. >> reporter: vice president joe biden and former presidents george bush and bill clinton were on hand for the quiet ceremony in shanksville, pennsylvania, a tribute, and a the showing of a memorial honoring the passengers and crew of flight 93. >> for as long as this memorial stands, we'll remember what the

men and women on board here did, the tribute they made, the sacrifice they made and the lives they spared. the united states will never forget. >> reporter: president obama, along with the first lady, are remembering the september 11th national day of service and remembering it in arlington, virginia, the two paid a visit to the arlington national cemetery, honoring those killed in the wars and afghanistan. in new york city, hundreds gathered, holding hands as the bell rang, remembering the time the plane crashed at the world trade center and north tower. >> i'm very happy to be standing here with my children who have all the freedoms in the world right now, because we are what we have. we fought for it, we'll continue to fight for it. and now we can stand and hold hands and just be one and be happy. >> and the 9/11 memorial will be open to victims' families only on sunday, tomorrow morning for the dedication, it opens to the public on monday but by reservation only.

live, in new york, craig boswell, ktvu. and a memorial as well, speaking at the unveiling, former president clinton announced he and house speaker john boehner will work together to raise the 10 million needed. he praised those as heros who made the ultimate sacrifice. and people in hayward expressing their patriotism. they were in the area of caper park, the group worked together on the pieces, starting with the stars first, but some of the stars blew away after the group left. and bay area k-9s are being recognized for their efforts in the 9/11 attacks, coming up, how the dogs responded to the attacks and how they were honored today. and stay with us for complete coverage at 5:00 tomorrow, a special edition will be at 7:00.

we also have a ktvu special broadcast, 9/11, a decade of change, beginning at 6:00. you'll find a complete wrap on the 10:00 news. and unstable weather, causing dramatic light shows. we want to show you video where they caught several lightning strikes. the evening storm also brought thunder, rain and hail to the east bay and south bay. cal fire reported lightning strikes early today and throughout northern california. and about 100 lightning strikes across the entire state. lightning sparked three fires on mt. diablo. all of them out as of this afternoon. about 42 acres burned on the mountain, nobody was hurt in any of the fires. and a red flag warning issued for parts of the bay area has expired now. we have more on the look at where the storms are and where they're located. >> and yes, we have the preview over the past for days, taking shape with the thunderstorms, the bulk of the activity

outside the bay area, right now the map here on storm tracker two, i can show you the coverage, not a lot to show you in the bay airway, as you head to the south you can see activity heading to parts of monterey county. this is the loop here, the south-southeast here, prompting the national weather service to issue a flash flood warning, expiring at 5:15, about an hour ago, as i widen the perspective, you see the satellite and radar, action to the south, mainly to the south of monterey bay, and here in the sierras, here we go also to the east, this is what i am watching for tonight, as we head into it tomorrow we still have to hold onto the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. coming up we'll take an updated look at the forecast model, we'll highlight the change you can expect in the next couple of days. the san francisco mayor candidate dennis herrera kicking off the last part of

. a few hours ago, workers at ground zero, brought over a huge american flag, several workers observed a moment of silence at 5:46 in the morning, when the first plane struck the world trade center. and the west sidewalk on the golden gate bridge opened to bikers this morning after being closed for months. but there are changes in store for pedestrians. >> reporter: she stands 746 feet tall and has been around for nearly 75 years. >> pretty awesome. >> reporter: the golden gate bridge is a magnet for

pedestrians and bikers, bikers usually on the west side, walkers and joggers on the east side. but for the last five months it has been closed for a painting project. that means many had to share the sidewalk, and not all has been snoot. >> they jump smooth. >> they jump out. >> reporter: this morning, they finally reopened to bikes. >> it is kind of cool to go across the bridge and see the west -- >> it is iconic america. >> reporter: so the bikers get the west side of the bridge back, and everything is back to normal, right? well. not quite. actually a bump in the road on this bridge will impact the people who decide to put their feet on the ground. >> yeah, i would be upset. i would be very disappointed. >> reporter: disappointed that she can't walk across the bridge, and tuesday, after a project is implemented, the

people won't be allowed to walk end to end. >> i just feel bad, people come from all over. >> reporter: the partial closure will last for four months, and by the year 2012, the golden gate bridge will be opened for all to enjoy. ktvu. and today ucff honored parents who received bone marrow transplants for their kids, the kids had fun with baseball action and balloons and fun. ucff has performed almost a thousand bone marrow transplants since 1982. and tonight in libya, nato forces helping rebels take over a key area. rebel forces reached the edge of the area today where two of muammar qaddafi's sons may be

hiding. in tripoli, the week long fight continued, with muammar qaddafi himself at large. and after delays and a successfully launched probe this morning, they're now on their way to the moon. >> two, one, and lift-off of the delta two with grail. >> the rocket delivered the grail probe into space. and once in orbit, the probes will examine the lunar surface and what is underneath, all the way to the core. looks like the thunderstorms settled down here, let's talk to mark. >> yeah, right now, just partly sunny skies across the bay area. you always get a little nervous when you have the showers and thunderstorms to the southeast. and that is what we have right now on live storm tracker two. nothing too extreme right now, we're tracking the heavier cell closer to monterey county. probably in the past couple of hours or so.

you can't see the live sweep, here is the bulk of the action, out to the sierra, yellows and reds showing up, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, with that, we would like to watch the fire danger, especially across the sierra, looks like we're getting downpours as well. and a look here at the coast, the fog showing up, with that we cooled off quite a bit today, about 5-10 degrees from yesterday's readings. here is a look at current numbers, 70s, 80s to report. oakland, 65. and mountain view at last check reporting 72 degrees. forecast headlines for tonight. we do have this, fog for the coast, for the bay, partly cloudy skies, tomorrow, a slight chance of thunderstorms tomorrow especially for the bay area hills. next week, temperatures coming up a bit, overnight lows tomorrow morning, muggy out there, humid with that moisture in place, so with that, temperatures in the 50s to right at about 60 degrees, it is a mild start for your sunday

morning. san jose, a forecast low of 61 degrees. quite a bit of activity, especially towards southern california as we lost that satellite image. but we have clusters of showers and thunderstorms, all row at a timing around this area here of rotation -- this stablizes the atmosphere, tonight and today, tonight, partly cloudy skies, cooling continuing, we'll hold on to at least a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. higher chance for the east bay and the south bay. as you can see the forecast model, not too aggressive with the showers, at least the coverage for tomorrow, close enough to the bay area to warrant the chance, high clouds in addition to low clouds and fog. 49ers playing football tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy skies, a bit of a breeze, definitely, bundle up with the readings only in the low 60s, afternoon highs at candle stick. forecast highs, cooling off continually, no 90s on the forecast maps, warmest locations in the low 80s, san

after her experiences. >> she was not only my buddy, she was just an amazing dog, she was my search partner, it was wonderful to help people when they needed it the most, which is what i love about what i do. >> and the dog, lucy, help weekend the recovery efforts after the oklahoma city bombing and the space shuttle columbia disaster. and looking at the cure to breast cancer. >> the susan g. komen three-day walk continued today, close to 1900 participants made a pit stop in the oakland square. walkers have about 20-miles to go to complete the 60-mile engine. tomorrow, they head to marin county to complete the event. and today, a benefit for the largest bronze statue in the west, more than two dozen heros, including martin luther king, jr., are featured in the

. so we're looking at stanford and cal. good things going on, 6th ranked stanford doing what they needed to do after traveling across the country to play duke, a career high there, a completion in the third quarter that turns into a 60-yard scoring play. cardinals running away, the game at that point leading 24- 7. another big play in the quarter came with stanford facing a third and one. stewart busts into the is secondary. he is gone, that made it 30-7, stanford improves to 2 and 0 with a 33-14 win, after the dust settled. and a tougher time for cal at colorado, bears lead, 24-20 in the third, but hansen hits richardson over the middle, make that a 78-yard touchdown
