good evening. >> i'm ken wayne. it started with 19 terrorists boarding commercial jetliners. it ended with crashes in new york, washington, and pennsylvania that claimed almost 3,000 lives. we're at ground zero in new york city with a live report on the eve of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. >> good evening to you. here at the 9/11 memorial and world trade center. the stage is set for tomorrow morning's dedication and across the nation, heroes and victims are being honored and remembered. >> reporter: vice-president joe biden and former presidents george w. bush and bill clinton unveiled the memorial honoring the passengers and crew of flight 93 in pennsylvania. >> they left a great deal behind. they left spouses and children and grandchildren. they left something else: a legacy of bravery and selflessness that will always inspire america. >> reporter: president obama

and the first lady commemorated the national day of service and remembrance first with a visit to the arlington national cemetery and a stop at a soup kitchen where they helped prepare food for those in need. north carolina -- >> i wanted to do something to really show that these guys will always be remembered and never forgotten. >> reporter: new jersey. >> we remember the 2,974 americans who died that day. >> reporter: and in new york, a touching note of love and admiration from the other 9/11 victims, those left without husbands, wives, daughters, sons, mothers and fathers. >> dear dad, i just miss you. you died on september 11th 2001 and i was born 26 days later on october 7th. >> back out live, one of the reflecting pools. that's where the south tower once stood. you can see the waterfall has been turned off at this point, probably to be restarted in the

morning. this memorial will be open only to the victims on sunday, family members of the victims. it will be open to the general public on monday but that's going to be by reservation only. back to you. >> a bipartisan effort will help complete the flight 93 national memorial. speaking at the unveiling today, bill clinton announced he and house speaker john boehner will work together to raise the remaining $10 million needed. mr. clinton praised those aboard the plane as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. in new york city today, a prayer service at st. patrick's cathedral honored the firefighters who died during the terrorist attacks on the world trade center. ♪[ singing ] >> new york city mayor bloomberg praised the fire department's bravery that day and its work since the attacks. he says the fire department lost members with a total of 4,400 years of collective experience on 9/11. >> while if the passage of the

decade may have blunted some of the pain, it hasn't filled the hole in our hearts. so we remember the brave 343. we honor them, we salute them. >> mayor bloomberg praised the members of the fire department for their grace, fortitude and passion. meanwhile at ground zero, workers unfurled a large american flag. tomorrow's ceremonies start at 5:30 a.m. our time with a moment of silence at 5:46. u.s. authorities say there's no sign that anyone linked to al-qaeda has entered the country to carry out an attack tomorrow. both new york and washington are on alert after intelligence officials said they had a credible threat of a plot involving three men and a car bomb. police in new york are investigating two vans missing from a world trade center site contractor and another from a new jersey storage facility. the nation's capital, police

are searching for 2u-haul vans reported stolen. dozens of cities held a memorial stair climb in honor of the 9/11 first responders. this was the scene this morning in downtown chicago as participants climbed 80 stories. today's event raised funds for the national fallen firefighters foundation. about 40 other cities are hosting stair climbs this weekend. 220 people are registered to climb the stairs at the transamerica building in san francisco tomorrow. overseas in afghanistan today, a taliban suicide bomber killed two civilians at a nato compound. the bombing came hours after the taliban vowed to keep fighting u.s. forces in afghanistan. the taliban also issued a statement, saying they had no active role in the september 11th attacks. those attack on september 11th, 2001, prompted the u.s. invasion of afghanistan a month later in october. the taliban had given safe haven to al-qaeda and refused to hand over osama bin laden

after the attacks. they were ousted from power in december of that year. the fighting has continued, taking the lives of almost 2,700 coalition forces. evacuation orders were lifted tonight at washington douglas international airport after a bomb scare. police say a bomb-sniffing dog alerted officials to some cargo around 4:30 this afternoon but investigators found nothing wrong and gates were back open around 8:00 p.m. several gates were evacuated and incoming flights were sent to other gates. here at home, 9/11 ceremonies are happening all weekend. we hear how san francisco first responders honored the victims of the terrorist attacks. >> reporter: hundreds of san francisco firefighters and police officers stood at attention for the national anthem. ♪ and the rockets' red glare ♪ >> reporter: along with city

stubborn smoky fire but everyone inside the ground floor business and two upper floors made it out safely. there's no word yet on what started the fire. the guardian angels are moving san francisco's mission district tonight but their presence is being met with mixed feelings. we are there live where we captured some confrontations on tape. eric? >> there were clearly a few people not happy to see them. police have stepped up their own patrols after four shootings in the span of eight days but the guardian angels insist they need even more help and we caught a few of those tense moments right over there. >> stay back. >> you stay back. >> reporter: their first confrontation happened within minutes of these guardian angels hitting the street at 16th and mission. the group's leader broke a homeless man's golf club when he thought it might be used as a weapon. >> and he pushed me! he doesn't want me to touch him. >> we know our procedures and we follow them to the best of

our abilities but it's just that corner. it's like that every weekend. >> reporter: the guardian angels have spent the last two nights in the city's mission district in response to a rash of violent crime, including three killings over the last two weeks. >> people getting robbed, mugged and, you know, it's getting out of hand. >> reporter: he says his group notifies police before it goes out. all members are trained in self- defense and even how to use handcuffs to make citizen arrests. >> boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: while their presence is welcomed by some. >> it's nice when you see them. >> it's a good thing. >> absolutely. >> reporter: not everyone feels the same. >> a little bit more of what they're patrolling, that's a big word, security. >> are you guys individual vigilantes? >> we abide by our laws and we help the community out to make it better. >> reporter: i had the chance to talk to a few police

officers out here. they did not want to say how they felt about them. the group says it has had no major problems out here so far this weekend. we're live in san francisco, eric rasmussen, channel 2 news. >> tonight, police say a man is under arrest suspected of beating a 46-year-old woman to death. 51-year-old robert lee bradley was arrested yesterday morning. that's when police say they found the woman's body in her home on harbor street. bradley was in the house. police say bradley was dating the victim. her identity has not been made public. california is seeing a decrease in violent crimes, according to state officials, violent crime decreased by 6.9% last year. that is the fourth year in a row that violent crimes dropped. homicide rates across the state are the lowest since 1966. lightning strikes caused dozens of fires across the state last night with about 50 of those fires right here in northern california. cal fire says at least six lightning fires burned in the

bay area. three of those fires burned on mount diablo. all of them were out as of this afternoon. firefighters say about 200 acres burned. bart officials say they're considering new restrictions on media access after journalists were swept up with protesters last thursday. we were among six journalists who were detainted when police moved tine make arrests. the san francisco chronicle reports that now, bart police are considering designated areas for media and making announcements for media to step aside when police move in. the recent protests stem from the shooting death of a homeless man by police and the oscar grant shooting. the message comes from dr. maya angelou. the details, coming up. and a hostage situation at an office depot comes to an

speaker and we are live now with what the poet and others had to say. >> that's right. tonight, we're going to take you inside of the fox theater. dr. maya angelou began speaking about an hour ago. now, event organizers put this together to raise money for an inspirational sculpture installed just around the corner from the theater. >> reporter: the fox theater's marquee lit up tonight. the fundraiser drew hundreds. the mission inside, to raise money for what is now located around the corner. >> it's nice to have lots of history. >> reporter: these schoolchildren played tonight at the park. they didn't know the name of the sculpture which is made up of 25 ordinary but monumental figures. but they did know why it's here. >> it's to learn about history. >> reporter: bun man who wants to see the fourth and final piece placed in the park hopes

and install the fourth piece of that sculpture. reporting live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. some people in heyward showed their patriotism today. they put up a large american flag on a grassy hillside in the area of taper park. a caller says the group assembled the pieces starting with the stars first. the want stripes apparently, blew away after the group left. some canines and their handlers were recognized for their efforts after the 9/11 attacks. the dogs and six members of the california rescue task force 3 were honored this morning. they were at ground zero following the attacks to help with search and rescue efforts. one canine specialist told us about her experience 10 years ago with her dog lucy who has since passed away. >> she was able to find remains that could be recovered and dna

recovered to bring the families closure. lucy was not only my best buddy, she was my search partner and an amazing dog. >> she also helped with recovery efforts after the oklahoma city bombing and the space shuttle disaster in texas. an employee in oakland has been arrested. investigators say it appears the worker helped a gunman who tried to rob the store last night. alex savage explains what happens and the disguise the gunman was wearing. >> reporter: racing to a robbery in progress, oakland s.w.a.t. officers surrounded this office depot store overnight as snipers took up positions nearby. police used a loudspeaker, trying to negotiate with the armed man holed up inside but he wouldn't come out. the s.w.a.t. team moved in and found the man hiding in a crawlspace, ending

this six-hour-long stand-off. >> bottom line is it resolved peacefully, there was no significant injuries to the victims or to the suspect. we're all going home and you can't ask for anything better than that. >> reporter: this got started around 9:30 last night when the gunman burst into the store just around closing time, looking for cash. when officers pulled up minutes later, they surrounded the place and then saw workers running from the store. those employees who escaped this store told police the man with the gun was wearing a disguise when he came in, one of those masks from the movie "v" for vandetta and this armed robbery got help from someone on the inside. police have arrested an office depot employee who they say let the man inside the store to carry out the crime. no one from office depot would talk to us today about the robbery or the arrests of one of their coworkers.

alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. there was a message of hope today in berkeley for those facing foreclosure. an estimated 150 people came out to a workshop on foreclosure prevention. the workshop included representatives from the more than a dozen lending institutions and h.u.d. counselors. they offered information on loan survival strategies. california legislators approved a last-minute compromise bill aimed at getting amazon to pay state sales tax. the measure was voted on last night, passing the senate 36 votes to 1 and the sampley with a 62-8 vote. if governor brown signs the bill into law, amazon would start paying sales tax next august. during that time, if congress passed a national law, that would supersede the state law. the lights are back on now but a massive power outage this week across the southwest and mexico is illuminating a major

issue. a worker was working on a capacitor which controls voltage level when a short circuit took the capacitor offline. 6 million customers from oregon to orange county and later to mexico were left in the dark. investigators are trying to figure out how a minor issue caused such a massive blackout and how it can be prevented in the future. president obama today declared part of texas a disaster area in the wake of huge wildfires. the move trees up federal funding to supplement state and local efforts. the wildfires have destroyed 1,400 homes in the central texas area of bastrop county. high temperatures and a drought are hampering efforts to put out the fire. some streets are underwater tonight after flash flooding. drivers in the antelope valley region struggled to keep their vehicles out of the mud. streets near los angeles, lano were also submerged. forecasters say the wild weather isn't over, either. hail and high-speed winds are expected tonight.

it may not have felt like it here in the bay area but this summer has been the hottest in the u.s. in 75 years. the climactic data center says the nation's average temperature was 74.5 degrees. that is the second highest on record. the west coast, however, had a cooler-than-average summer, with california experiencing the wettest summer on record. the conflict in libya rages on. fierce fighting as muammar qaddafi loyalists refuse to give in. the call today from the leader of the rebels. the wait is over. bikes are back on the west side of the golden gate bridge but now comes some changes for pedestrians. i'm still watching those thunderstorms in southern california right now. coming up, i'll highlight the thunderstorm chances for tomorrow and the temperature change you can expect the remainder of your weekend.

cancer. >> day two! >> today was day two of the susan g. komen three-day walk. close to 1,900 participants made a pitstop this afternoon at jack lemon square. walkers va20 miles to go before they complete their 60-mile journey. tomorrow they'll walk in marin county before heading to san francisco. today, uscf honored children who received bone marrow transplants. staff hosted a picnic for the families in san rafael. they played with some balloons and did a little baseball out there. one family is celebrating a year since their son's transplant. >> he's so happy and so happy to be one year plus transplant going when we signed the papers to do transplant there was that chance that matthew wouldn't survive. >> 5-year-old matthew is back at school and doing very well. the doctor who completed their first transplant in 1982 says it's gratifying to see the children grow up healthy.

news of the world tonight -- [ chanting ] >> in libya, fighting continues where qaddafi loyalists refuse to lay down their arms. they have been in surrender talks with the forces. meantime, today, the chief of the rebel forces arrived in tripoli. he calls for unity. he says this is a time for all libyans to come together following the ousting of qaddafi. in eastern africa, at least 190 people died when an overloaded ferry capsized near the island of zanzibar off the coast of tanzania. it was headed from the maimland when it began to list from side to side. one survivor said the aging ferry may have been carrying 200 people than its official capacity of 600. and in greece, police threw tear gas containers at angry protesters as the prime minister vowed to adopt new

austerity measures. he said greece will do what it takes to avoid bankruptcy. it's expected that they will cut thousands of public sector jobs. the museum of children's art in oakland is canceling a plan to exhibition art from the palestinian children. the exhibit included graphic images by children depicting the israeli bombing of gaza during 2008 and 2009. according to the mercury news, the chairman said the art was not appropriate for an open gallery accessible by all children. the chairman also said the museum had received complaints from the public. tonight, hollywood is mourning the loss of actor cliff robertson. he won an oscar for his performance in charlie in which a developmentally disabled man climbs a mountain.

the west sidewalk of the golden gate bridge has reopened to bicycles. that's good news for bicyclists but we explain there are some changes on the way for pedestrians. >> reporter: she stands 746 feet tall and has been around for nearly 75 years. >> pretty awesome. >> reporter: the golden gate bridge is a magnet for

bicyclists and pedestrians. for the last few months, it has been closed. that meant the two had to share the sidewalk and not all has been smooth. >> they'll jump out when you least expect it and you've got to maneuver around them. >> reporter: this morning at sunrise, the west sidewalk finally reopened to bicycles. >> it's kind of cool to go across the bridge and see the west. it's going to be awesome. >> it's iconic america. >> reporter: so the cyclists get the west side of the bridge back and everything's back to normal right? not quite. there's another bump in the road on this bridge and it's going to impact those people who decide to put their feet on the ground. >> i would be upset. i would be very disappointed. >> reporter: disappointed if she could not walk across the bridge and starting tuesday due to a seismic retrofit project, pedestrians will not be allowed to walk end to end. >> i just feel bad.

people come from all over the place to do this. >> reporter: the partial closure will last for four months and by the year 2012, the golden gate will be open for all to enjoy. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. for the second night in a row, cal trans plans to completely shut down part of highway 101. the closure will be in both directions between the capitalexpressway and interstate 280 starting at midnight tonight and lasting until 7:00 tomorrow morning. it will allow workers to upgrade the overpass. they plan a closure tomorrow as well from midnight sunday until 5:00 monday morning. san francisco mayoral candidate dennis herrera kicked off the last part of his campaign today. he thanked volunteers for their efforts, saying he has about 200 neighborhood captains so far to help walk the precincts. he faces a crowded face that includes ed lee. this week, he announced he's against the central subway project that would run from south of market to china town.

lee supports that project. there's word tonight a san francisco woman has pleaded no contest after being accused of pretending to be a victim of the deadly san bruno pipeline disaster. she faces charges including burglary, identity theft and using false i.d.s. county prosecutors say taylor faces up to two years in prison. she's scheduled to be sentenced november 9th. she's free on $100,000 bail. experts are raising doubts tonight about a possible merger between yahoo and a.o.l. bloomberg reports that a.o.l.'s chief executive officer is working to gauge yahoo's interest in combining the two companies. both a.o.l. and yahoo are trailing far behind facebook and google in market share. the former yahoo c.e.o. opposed the merger last year. china town took on a more festive atmosphere today as people from around the world gathered for the autumn moon festival.

well, the weather pattern has been changing quite a bit this weekend. showers and thunderstorms just outside the bay area for today. of course, last night we had the lightning strikes push through the region. right now, we still have the low clouds and talking we've been talking a lot about over the past few weeks still hugging a good portion of the coast. in fact, that fog, the marine layer deepened quite a bit over the past 24 hours and as a result the bay area cooled off and already the low clouds pushing back into the bay. that will be a factor in our forecast, at least in the short term. for tonight, fog for the coast and for the bay, partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, we will still hold onto that slight chance of a few isolated thunderstorms and then next week, we're going to gradually warm things up just a little bit. we're going to have some fog to deal with at least for the morning hours. overnight lows tomorrow morning in the 50s and a few spots starting out sunday morning in the 60s out towards concord and livermore. san jose 51, you can see all the action on the satellite and the radar out towards the

sierra, the showers and thunderstorms but especially down towards southern california. just look at the satellite, you can't an idea there's something around here. in fact, that's where the area of low pressure is closer to point conception. for tomorrow, just with the location of this low it's going to funnel in a few high clouds still approaching parts of the bay area. and so with that, partly cloudy skies, cooling continues. and still the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms. highest chances will be for the east bay and also for the south bay. it's only a slight chance but something we will be watching, at least for tomorrow. our forecast model not too generous with the rainfall coverage. you can see tomorrow morning at 8:00 just some cloud cover out there. and then into the afternoon hours, the showers develop across the sierra, close of the to the region. we'll be watching that as far as our forecast for tomorrow morning. and then into a monday we're still going to hold onto a few high clouds. throughout the day, late sunday into monday, that system will be tracking inland. here we go with the football forecast, tomorrow afternoon,
