start to reform later on. they've been focusing mainly on the southern part of the viewing area. it looks like today they are coming off the east bay and south bay. i will mention it. they are definitely up there. probably refire up. we get a little afternoon heating. 50s and 60s on your temps. very mild due to the cloud cover. a lot more in the way of high and mid level clouds. there is plenty going on. the low still off about central california, southern california. it's not going to eject toward las vegas until tuesday afternoon or evening. until then, it's a broad brush. anybody on that wrap around could be in on shower activity. pretty good looking low up there in the gulf of alaska. so clouds, sun, mild to cool. shower are possible toward the north bay and breezy. temperatures 50s, 60s, and 70th and 80s. this is well below average on the temperatures and possibility of a shower or thunderstorm later on this afternoon. >> steve good morning, to you. traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area.

there is road work out there. let's go outside and take a look at interstate 80. see traffic is moving along relatively well as you drive out to the mccarthur maze with some of that road work it's just not there thousand. the morning commute looks pretty good if you are driving on westbound bay bridge coming in to san francisco. there is road work southbound 880 between 16th and embarcadero. in the southbound northbound 280 traffic looks good getting up to highway 17. let's go back to pam. we begin with developing news in oakland where a shooting led to a pursuit. ktvu kraig debro is at the scene and has more information. kraig. >> reporter: it all ended up here at 13th avenue and chat ham. there was a one car crash. you can see the -- it scattered field. debris field that spreads from that part of the intersection all the way over to this part

of the intersection. just a moment ago we got video tape of the tow truck driver putting the car on the flat bed and towing it away. police told me this all began at 45th and international. their theory is there was a shooting there. they know that part. but they are not sure if the person who ended up here is connected with the shooting. the chp saw this car driving at a high speed northbound. they chased the car. the chase ended up here. the vehicle lost control and crashed. oakland police arrested the two people inside a man and woman. they did find a weapon somewhere along the chase route. they didn't tell me exactly where. we will be checking that to see if it's connected with the slug they found in the injured person. by the way the persons injuries are described as nonlife threatening. police right now have two people in custody following this crash over here at 13th and chatam. they are investigating whether this shooting is connected with these two people they are

detaining. reporting live in oakland kraig debro ktvu. officials are looking into a suspicious apartment fire when two bodies were found inside. it started on the second floor of the building on coolidge avenue. witnesses saw two people fleeing the scene with gas canisters. the victims are believed to be a man and woman. they may have been killed in a drug related dispute. six people were displaced by the fire. there is an acupuncture business on the ground floor. it was not destroyed. passengers are being urged to make alternate plans as protestors are scheduled to gather at bart stations in downtown san francisco. groups have been organizing the protest for several weeks. in new york, the national

9/11 memorial and museum opens to the public today. twin reflecting pools now mark where the world trade center towers once stood. they feature the largest man- made water falls in north america. photographs of the nearly 3,000 people that died in the september 11th attacks are on display in the museum. their name is also etched in bronze paneling. now americans around the country paused to mark the tenth anniversary of the september 11th terror attacks yesterday. family members read the names of each victim and delivered personal messages. >> i wish my dad had been there to teach me to drive, ask a girl out on a date, and see me graduate from high school. >> six moments of silence were observed. the moments marked when each plane hit the towers. when each tower fell the attack on the pentagon and the crash in pennsylvania of united

flight 93. president obama closed the day of remembrances praising america's resilience. >> our character as a nation has not changed. our faith in god and in each other that has not changed. >> president obama and former president bush stood side by side at ground zero. after the ceremony, they greeted families of 9/11 victims and offered words of support. ceremony was also held at the pentagon. americans flight 77 crashed into the u.s. military headquarters on september 11th. all 59 passengers and crews on board and all 125 people were killed. vice president biden resided over that -- resided over that ceremony. wreaths were laid on the 184 benches that serve as a memorial to the pentagon victims. family members of the victims aboard united flight 93

will take part in one final ceremony this morning. a private funeral will be held for remains recovered from the crash in shanksville, pennsylvania. the remains have been kept in three caskets inside a crypt. they will be interred into what is called the sacred ground site. now this morning's ceremony caps off a week of reflection and attributes in shanksville. president obama and the first lady placed a wreath at the memorial there. they also viewed the wall of names. 40 marble slabs inscribed with names from those aboard flight 93. many surviving relatives still live here in the bay area. they say the ceremonies have been deeply personal knowing the pennsylvania field is the final resting place for their loved ones. now the country's second largest memorial for flight 93 is here in the bay bay area.

coming up in ten minutes the special connection that mourners say they have with the victims. >> there is jittery nerves over another september 11th style attack lead to several disruptions over the weekend. two fighter jets escorted an american airlines flight from l.a. to new york yesterday. that was after crew members noticed three passengers making repeated trips to the bathroom. a denver flight was escorted by f-16s. three passengers on that flight was detained. >> i started noticing something when the pilot said don't move very stern. >> guys got on board with machine guns told us to keep our heads down. they hauled off three people in cuffs. >> none of them turned out to be terror related. all of the detained passengers were released.

a union city woman accused of murdering michelle le will return to court at 9:00 this morning. she appeared in a hayward court last week. they believe she killed le in a lovers triangle 37 esteban is in a single cell for her own safety. she will be assigned an attorney and may enter a plea today. two men charged in the murder of three-year-old carlos nava will enter a flee this afternoon. they took part in a gang related drive-by shooting in east oakland. a stray bullet killed nava as he left the little caesars restaurant with his family. they face one count of murder and two counts of attempt the more. hundreds of people attended a festive gathering in san bruno who is trying to move forward from last years deadly pipeline explosion. community members bonded over music and food.

they said it was important to re unit. >> it's just a way to realize that things you can get good out of bad things and now there is a big sense of community. >> it feels better. i think it feels better for sure. i don't know about you but for me it does. i'm happy they are here and i'm not here crying. >> congresswoman jackie spears also attended the event. she hopes by this time next year they will be doing ribbon cutting as the community continues to rebuild. a nine-year-old boy injured by a hit and run driver is back home this morning. he returned to his home on saturday. wyatt was hit by a truck outside of at & t park. he spent 11 days in a san francisco hospital. before being transported to a hospital in philadelphia. 21-year-old andrew vargas has been charged in that crash.

4:39 is the time right now. let's check in with sal for an early look at traffic. a lot of the crews have moved on. the roads have been finished. some parts any way. >> yeah we've had some progress out there. as a matter of fact, traffic is looking good on some of the bay area roadways. 80 for example we don't have any of that road work. all the lanes are open. also this morning we are looking at the commute here at the bay bridge toll plaza. there is a little bit of a backup in one of the lanes. could be a toll taker change. and this morning if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 traffic looks very nice. getting up to highway 17. at 4:39 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. we have a pesky little low right off of southern california. it's send until a lot of shower activity. some of that wrap back over us friday night. skies it will up.

and saturday into early sunday i was down in the south bay. yesterday came back over war -- slightly warmer after a real big cool down on sunday as advertised. and you get a good look at that as it wraps back around. counter clock wise the low. you can see the cloud cover and thunderstorms firing up along the west slope of the sierra. they dispate once you get to sunset. they will start to fire up again. there is a lot of cloud cover that is taking aim. so north by bay i put in for possible showers today. because of the cloud cover temperatures are up 50s or low 60s. not the 40s we had for the longest time. now it's 50s and 60s. 63 san jose. there is low clouds san jose i was looking at the web camera. showingly clouds as well. we have the combination of the high and low cloud giving us a below average day on the afternoon highs. there is a couple of pieces of

it. until it does you can see the cloud cover coming back around. possibility of showers today. clouds, sun, mild showers. breezy at times. highs today 58-84. this is actually not a bad pattern for downtown san francisco. you can get my more of a -- you can get more of a southerly breeze. a lot of 70s with partly to mostly crowdly skies. cloud, sun, showers we can continue that into thursday. should be a little cooler. 4:41 is the time right now. this morning los angeles based koa da will announce a partnership to assemble all of its vehicles in benicia. they hope its presence will lure other businesses to the area. they can go up to 150 miles on a full charge and sells for about $35,000.

good morning, we have mostly cloudy skies. there are breaks but it's not only low clouds. it's high mid level clouds wrapping back in. a possibility of showers today. highs today kind of cool. 60s and also 75s for most. this morning some sad news.

the only member of a russian hockey team to survive that firey plane crash has now died. he died this morning of severe burns that covered 90% of his body. the crash last week killed 44 people including 37 players, coaches, and staff of a russian hockey club. there was another survivor a member of the flight crew who is being treated at a moscow hospital. one of moammar gadhafi's two sons has turned up in -- he crashed into the african nation last week. since then they made their way into the country. so far they have not been refugee status. rebels want gadhafi's sons and gadhafi himself to be returned to libya for trial. the whereabouts of gadhafi is still unknown. nearly 80 u.s. troops are recovering after being injured by a truck bomb at a nato base in afghanistan.

officials say the suicide bomber was driving a truck carrying firewood when he rammed into a base center. five afghans were killed. 77 americans hurt. nato says none of the u.s. troops has life threatening injuries. the taliban has claimed responsibility for that attack. union city is home to the second largest flight 93 memorial in the country next to shanksville. mourners placed flowers at the base of the 40 red granite monument. every monument is inscribed with the victims name, age, and hometown. they wanted to pie their respects. although none of the passengers were from union city, the mayor says it was important to erect a local memorial. hundreds of bay area muslim americans came together to promote peace on the tenth anniversary of the ever september 11th terror attacks.

the muslim community association organized an event called from fear to friendship. people of different faiths gathered in santa clara to pray and reflect. many muslims across the country were unfairly targeted in the after math of the terror attacks. some people said they still face discrimination and hate ten years later. >> someone said you know you f and this and that. and you know it was very hurtful because you know i'm for peace. i'm not a terrorist. >> organizers say they hope events like this one will help to build a better more collaborative future. the college of marin will remember the victims of 9/11 today. both campuses are holding remembrance ceremonies. at 10:00 this morning a moment of silence will be held at the schools locations in kentfield and novato. it was six months ago yesterday that an earthquake

and tsunami struck the country. a minute of silence was observed at the exact time the magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit on march 11th. the fukushima nuclear plant was badly damaged by the tsunami triggering the worst nuclear disaster 25 years ago. a new date has been set for the dedication of the martin luther king junior memorial in washington, d.c.. it will be dedicated on october 16th. dedication ceremony was originally planned for last -- originally planned for last month but was delayed because of hurricane irene. president obama will speak at next months dedication. rick perry and mitt romney are expected to dominate the debate between eight presidential candidates today in tampa, florida. romney will likely target perry for his comment in the last debate that social security is quote a ponzi scheme. social security is a hot topic

in florida with its largely elderly population. the republicans have another debate scheduled in florida in orlando on september 22nd. and then the florida straw poll on september 24th. president obama will send congress his new $447 billion jobs bill. swift passage of the measure. presidents plan calls for lower social security payroll taxes and new spending to hire teachers and rebuild roads, bridges, and schools. time now 4:49. a day of service to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11. how one mans idea has become a national event. and fire starts by lightning burns thousands of acres. the local help sent down to help fight the flames. ok, kids, our cable will let us record one more show. who should get it? i really love jennifer.

welcome back to the morning news. it's 4:51. an apartment fire that injured four people including two firefighters is being investigated in sacramento. people nearby say they heard a loud boom that sounded like an explosion early yesterday morning and saw flames coming from a third story unit. one man jumped out of a second

floor window. he suffered multiple injuries. two firefighters and one other person suffered minor injuries. fire crews from the north bay have been sent to kern county to help put out dozens of wild fire there is. more than 43,000-acres have burned. several fires have joined together to form two complexes near arvin anita hatch pee. 4:52 is the time right now. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. >> pam, good morning, once again. a lot of the road work has not been there overnight. most of it is picked up by 5:00. let's take a look at interstate 880 in oakland. you may have heard the raiders play tonight but they are not playing in oakland. you don't have to worry about traffic if you will get home to watch the game. it is the monday night football game. they are not playing locally.

we would let you know that but not this time. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. traffic is moving along nicely coming up to the toll plaza. this mornings commute on the peninsula looks pretty good if you are driving on 101 and 280. if you are going all the way to the south bay it's a nice drive. now at 4:53 let's go to steve. did the earth get knocked off its access because the 49ers won and the bengals won. >> wow your team won. >> i know let's have a parade. as you probably notice friday i will tell you the sky is it will up. we talked about this. yesterday was the calm day. wasn't bad. sunday it felt like fall. we had the low clouds and higher clouds came in. temperature dropped a good ten degrees for many. guess what, it's wrapping back around. partly cloudy, possible showers and thundershowers. mainly north bay and eastbound he says. i don't really want to say slightly warmer. some locations it's like a teeter totter effect.

san francisco is 70. go figure. just depends on the wind direction. sometimes this time of year it can happen. you can see the wrap around right there as it starts to send clouds back from northeast, california up toward alter rose and bernie. and west slope of the sierra heading back toward the bay area. on friday it was more toward the east bay and south bay. well as we talked about it's moving farther north. so 60s on the temps or 50s because of the cloud cover low and high they are much milder. much milder. but look there is a lot going on. big thunderstorms not only here but down in southern california. they collapse once you get to sunset but they will start to fire up again. there is a lot of moisture up in the atmosphere. i think later today especially north bay and east bay and up into lake county and mendocino county there is a possibility of thundershowers. all you need is a little afternoon heating. there is plenty of moisture in the air.

showers possible. breezy at times. the wind is generally on shore. generally from the west. temperatures now i did jump santa rosa up to 76 after yesterday's 67. there was really whacky temps yesterday. more uniform today. clouds, sun showers monday into tuesday and then that low ejects out with your weekend noise in view. we'lsee a big cool down i think thursday into friday. probably level off saturday and a little warmer on sunday. >> thank you, steve. 4:55 is the time right now. as the nation pauses to remember the events of 9/11; hundreds of volunteers marks the day with service. yesterday, people across the bay area got to work cleaning parks, sprucing up homeless shelters, and staffing supply bags for veterans. volunteers say it's a way to take the way back from terrorists. >> in remembering 9/11 it's not just sitting around and talking

about it. that doesn't help anything. z >> today's idea was started in 2002 by the brothers of twin towers victim. now it has become a nationally recognized event with hundreds of cities and companies participating. emergency responders mark the anniversary of 9/11 with a symbolic stair climb. yesterday more than 300 police and firefighters climbed the stairs at san francisco traffic america building. they climbed up 48 floors twice. it was to remember the people that died child climbing the stairs at world trade center. each climber wore the name and photo of one of 343 firefighters who died. we have complete coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 on our website to see more of the various memorials around the bay area and the country, you can click on the special 9/11 tab of our website
