she's accused of can be an east bay nursing student, caught in a lover's triangle. why gisele esteban's court hearing never happened today. good afternoon. i'm torre campbell. the court hearing for the woman accused of killing michelle le was delayed again. ali rasmus joins us live to explain what happened and some reaction from the victim's family. ali. >> reporter: gisele esteban was expected to appear in court today but instead a representative from the alameda county public defender's office stood before the judge, saying she was waiving her right to appear in court although he didn't explain why. someone did appear in court last week after she was arrested for the murder of michelle le. investigators believe 27-year- old esteban killed le because she blamed le for causing a break-up with her boyfriend. esteban doesn't have a lawyer yet. at her next hearing this coming monday, she'll likely be assigned an attorney from the public defender's office. she could enter a plea, but that's not certain. michelle le's brother michael

and her cousin christine were in the courtroom this morning. they and other friends and supporters word t-shirts and didn't say much about the hearing today because as they explained, the d.a. has advised them not to talk about this case publicly. >> we're just focused on michelle. >> now, since le went missing more than three months ago, her friends and family have organized several search parties to find any sign of her. hundred of volunteers have turned out to help the family. le's brother says he will have another search effort this weekend. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, ali. two men charged in the murder of three-year-old carlos 1/2a are scheduled to enter a play this afternoon. lawrence denard and willie torrance took part in a gang- related drive by shooting in east oakland last month. a spray bullet killed the child as he left a little caesar's restaurant with his family.

the men face one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. authorities evacuated the federal courthouse in palm beach, florida this morning after a bomb-sniffing dog alerted them about a rental truck parked nearby. police brought in the dog and the bomb squad after they found the truck with a note posted on its side referring to a child molestation occasion in the early 1990s. the bomb squad determined there were no explosives inside and courthouse workers were allowed to go back into the building. the federal and local authorities are investigate hog left the truck there the past few days. the national 9/11 memorial in new york city officially opened to the public this morning. this video taken just after dawn shows the memorial and includes the names of the nearly 3,000 people etched in bronze around two reflecting pools where the towers used to stand. the neighboring national 9/11 museum is still under construction, but it should be

opened next year. visitors to the memorial must register online for tickets to go there. one day after president obama laid a wreath at the flight 93 memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania, family members of the victims came together this morning for a private ceremony. the 500 family members were joined by police, fire, and emergency workers. president obama was back on the stump this morning pushing his jobs package. in a speech at the rose garden at the white house, the president surrounded himself with teachers, police officers, firefighters and construction workers. he called on congress to act quickly on his $447 billion plan. >> no games, no politics, no delays. i'm sending this bill to congress today, and they ought to pass it immediately. [applause] >> the white house is just announced how the plan would be paid for. it would rely on a series of tax hikes that have previously been proposed by the white

house and rejected by republicans. mr. obama plans trips to ohio and north carolina in the next two days to continue his salespitch on the jobs women and. concerns over unemployment and u.s. debt crisis led stocks down at the opening bell this morning. here's a live look at the big board on wall street. you can see it the dow is currently down 122 points at 10,869. the nasdaq 15. s&p is down 12. one of the reasons, greece is getting ready for more measures leading to protests over the weekend. but despite the measures, there's growing fear the country is still headed for default. a default by greece could spread across the global banking system, and economists worry europe's debt crisis could send the already weak u.s. economy into another recession. back at home, bank of america released new information this morning about its layoff plan. the bank says it plans to cut

30,000 jobs in the next few years to save $5 billion in expenses. the los angeles times reported the bank was planning 40,000 layoffs. most job cuts would come from the consumer banking operations. many of their branches had loan centers are here in california. a los angeles based electric car company is helping to create dozens of jobs in benicia. tara will explain why it could be so attractive to consumers as gas prices creep higher. >> reporter: the car travels 150-mile per charge. it seats 45 people and with incentives costs $35,000. but one thing this car doesn't have is a tail pipe. aside from the horn, the all- electric car rolls up without a sound.

news. >> thank you. poems on the golden gate bridge could go up by another dollar. the increase would come in 2013 when the bridge district faces almost $100 million in seismic upgrades and a $75 million payout for the doral driver project. the district has already raised tolls and issued layoffs in a plan but still not enough. some commutors say they are frustrated. >> i think -- whatever needs to be done, you know, we're getting hit everywhere, gasoline, taxes, you name it. i would be against it. >> district will also save money by eliminating toll takers next month and switching to electronic tolls. right now the toll is $6 for cash, $5 for fast track users. board members plan to take a closer look at their financial plans next month. bart is warning riders that protestors could disrupt service once again during this

evening's commute. a group called anonymous plans to stage a fifth protest at the civic center and embarcadero stations starting at 5 this evening. tweets this morning suggest the powell street station may be involved. protestors are demanding the bart disband its police force. commuters say they're growing tired of repeated disruptions. >> it's just annoying. it disrupts what people normally do, and we don't really agree with what they're protesting for. >> i'm sympathetic to a point, but i wish there was some way we could sort of compromise on some of this. >> anonymous is a group of computer hackers under investigation by the fbi, department of homeland security, and other federal agencies. those investigations have resulted in more than 75 raids and the arrest of 16 people this year, in connection with illegal hacking jobs claimed by anonymous. firefighters in kern county

are continuing to battle two sprawling wildfires. the largest one is the northern part of the county. as of this morning, the flames have spread to 23,000 acres, and it's only 30% contained. mandatory evacuations are not in place, but fire officials are recommending residents leave anyway. another fire near highway 58 in tehachapi has spread to 7,000 acres, and it is 92% contained. oakland homicide investigators are back at the scene today of a suspicious apartment fire after two burned bodies were found inside. the fire started on the second floor of a building on coolidge avenue around 1:00 yesterday morning. witnesses told firefighters they saw two people fleeing the scene with gas canisters. the victims are believed to be a man and a woman. police say they may have been killed in a drug-related dispute. six people were displaced by the fire. there's an acupuncture business on the ground level of the building, but it was not

damaged. oakland police are investigating a possible connection between a shooting and a car chase. the chp officer spotted the speeding car around 1:00 this morning on hyde street. that led to a pursuit which ended on 13th and chatham when the car crashed. a weapon was found at the scene. police are checking to see if the weapon was used in a shooting that happened nearby. the two people inside the car are being detained by police. a deadly explosion this morning at a facility handling nuclear waste. what officials are now saying about possible contamination. a live look outside, a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. rosemary roscoe is ahead with the forecast in the area you live. and mitt romney picks up an endorsement from his formal rival. why it may not be enough to help him in the polls.

a furnace used to treat low- grade nuclear waste exploded in a waste treatment site in france this morning. the accident killed one person and injured four others. french nuclear safety experts said there was no radiation leak and that no one was evacuated from the facility. the they also said there was no danger to the public. rape allegations are

following dominic strauss-kahn back to paris this noontime. french police interviewed the man this morning after a rape allegation by a writer. he says strauss-kahn's attempted to rape her in 2003 in a paris apartment. strauss-kahn denies the accusation and plans to sue the woman for defamation. strauss-kahn returned to france this month after prosecutors dropped charges that he sexually assaulted a new york hotel maid. the injured giants fan bryan stow may be getting another shunt put in this week. according to the latest update on the stowe family website, stowe's infections are gone and the operation may happen tomorrow. stowe's family also says he raised his eyebrows when told and flared his nostrils. he suffered serious brain injuries when two men attacked him in march. he is recovering at san francisco general hospital. tonight some of the candidates for mayor of san francisco will appear at a forum discussion.

the topic of tonight's forum is parks recreation and open spaces. most of the major candidates will be there, except front- runner ed lee. the debate is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the milton marks auditorium. tonight in tampa, florida the republican presidential candidates will hold another debate, and social security will be a hot topic. in their last debate, republican front-runner rick perry called social security a ponzi scheme. the other candidates will probably attack perry for saying that, considering florida's large senior citizen population. the republicans have another florida debate schedule indeed orlando on september 22nd, and that's followed by the florida straw poll on the 24th. tonight's de bit comes as a new poll shows texas governor rick perry with a wide lead over former front-runner mitt romney. cnn and osc poll shows perry

leading romney 30 to 18%. sarah palin comes in third, even though she is not in the race. many of the g.o.p. voters say perry has the best chance of beating president obama next year. and former republican presidential candidate tim pawlenty announced today his endorsement for mitt romney for president. pawlenty said romney has deep experience in success in turning around the economy and job outlook. pawlenty said romney's business experience makes him the right candidate to put the economy become on the right track. it was a historic moment in morning for a very old windmill in golden gate park. a copper dome was placed on a top of a 106-year-old windmill known as the samuel murphy windmill. it's one of two dutch windmills there, more than 10 years since

67 oakland. have you been outdoors lately? we're a few degrees warmer than yesterday. palo alto down into mountainview, 72 san jose. mid to upper 70s around livermore. 74 expected concord, outside your door, and santa rosa napa 72 right now with partly cloudy, mostly sunny skies. this system that has been off the southern california coastline pretty much remains stationary. it's going to weaken just a bit so we have partly cloudy skies in the forecast for today, and we're going to leave in a possibility of a thunderstorm or two for southern counties, monterey, san benito, maybe southern santa clara. slightly warmer for most of us into the afternoon. three to six degrees warmer already inland. satellite and radar view will show you that we're not seeing a whole lot this morning. it usually takes the afternoon, sunshine and heating, to really get the thunderstorms moving. but we do again expect this to continue to wink the next day or two. i'm going to ring you through future-cast. maybe a few clouds rolling our

2011 and 2012. the german company says the stainless steel exhaust pipe installed before the cars are shipped to dealers stick out further than necessary and the tips are hot and people can get burned. volkswagen has already received several complaints about the tail pipes. and 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products are being recalled. it's the second recall in two months for cargill. the company says salmonella was found in a ground turkey sample from the same plant tied to a recall of 36 million pounds of ground turkey last month. that recall followed a salmonella outbreak blamed for one death and more than 100 illnesses. so far, no illness have been reported from this latest recall. coming up, what anderson cooper is telling us about his new daytime talk show debuting today here on ktvu. why you could have to pay more for groceries, everything from cereal to soda.

taking a live look at the big board on wall street. numbers have been down most of the day, and choppy session is due mainly to more concerns about the european debt crisis. right now the dow is down 95. nasdaq is down 10. s&p is down 12. the department of agriculture announced this morning food prices could rise next year. hot weather this summer is expected to damage the nation's

corn crop, leading to more expensive corn. and more expensive corn can lead to an increase in food prices. that's because corn is used as an ingredient in everything, from animal feed to cereal and even soda. you won't notice the increase at the market right away. officials say it takes about six months for corn prices to trickle down to the grocery store. amazon.com could be getting ready to start its own digital book service. the wall street reports today the service could be modeled after los gatos based netflix. customers would pay an annual fee to access a library of content. publishers are not thrilled with the idea, though. they believe the service could lead to a decrease in the value of books. funeral service announcend for academy award winning actor cliff robertson. his funeral is this friday on new york's long island. other services are also being planned for a later date in new york city and los angeles.

robertson died saturday from natural causes, just one day after his 88th birthday. he is best known for his role in the film, pt109. more recently he played uncle ben in the spiderman movies. cnn's anderson cooper is launching a new daytime talk show that will debut here on ktvu this afternoon. he joined me live on morning on 2 saying it will feature interviews from a wide variety of people. he says it's designed to entertain and inform viewers. this afternoon's premiere will focus on amy winehouse, with interviews from her family. she died suddenly seven weeks ago. >> this is the first time today they're breaking their violence, revealing what they think happened to her. we're talking to her mom, her dad, her stepmother, her aunt, her boyfriend, so we have all the members of the family. >> some of the other interviews include harry potter actor
