"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, september 13th. we begin with the potential release of two uc berkeley graduates arrested in iran. some international diplomacy and a million dollars could set them free. ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is in berkeley with word of this bail for freedom deal. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning. those three hikers were uc berkeley graduateses. the details of the possible release of shane bauer and josh fattal are now in the hands of the swiss embassy. the u.s. and the iranian

government do not have diplomacy. now, shane bauer and -- now, if the two men are released on thursday, the bail is set at $500,000 each. their attorney says bauer and fattal's family are trying to come up with the money to secure that release. the two have been in prison for two years. just last month it appeared there was a setback. an iranian court sentenced the men to eight years each for espionage after being accused of spying for the u.s. the three hikers said they crossed over accidentally and they had firmly maintained their innocence. spying charges against them. sarah shourd was released in prison one year ago on humanitarian grounds. her release was with a price tag. the iranian court ordered her to pay $500,000 in bail before she was freed.

and it appears these two men's relies are part of a similar agreement. now, the spokesperson for the families said the families are not yet ready to comment on the release. the government has not cleared them entirely of those charges. but if they could come up with a million dollars, they could be freed by thursday. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. developing news, out of afghanistan where there's been a gun battle in downtown kabul near the us embassy. we are hearing reports that gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles in the direction of the u.s. embassy, nato headquarters and other official buildings. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. people inside the embassy were hiding under their desks. there are no injuries reported at the embassy.

identify themselves. she said by the description, she recognized at least two of the four days. i said are they troublemakers? she said, no, this is a camp. i think what she meant is by that is this facility is not that secure. you could walk out any time you wanted to. getting in and out of the building might be another person. people were told to stay inside and not go outside, not even to use their phones, unless there was an emergency. at the same time, they mutt out a description. four boys who are now on the loose here. two of them black male, two of them historic males. the black males one 6'3" -- the

person hit was. police towed away that car. some pretty stunning pictures after san leandro police car that crashed into a liquor store. that police car rammed into the three-ring liquor store about 10:00 last night smashing the store window and crumbling the frame there. the officer is responding to an armed robbery on hesperia boulevard when according to reports, he hit the curb and went straight into that store. neither the police officer nor anyone inside is hurt. we've been told the police may have detained a suspect in connection with the robbery but another person got away. the spirit of cheerleaders at piedmont hills high school is down over a -- the principal of the san jose holiday says cheerleaders have to wear sweat pants under their skirts while they are at school. this is because the skirts violate the dress code which says hem lines have to be at

additional strains caused 100,000 illnesses. a senate subcommittee holds a hearing today. it's all about anti-terror protection for america's food supply. now the hears wag called in response to -- hearing was called in response to a watchdog report that the government has spent more than $3 billion on food protection programs. however, the key programs have been bogged down and multi- agency bureaucracy. no one is really in charge. there's no way to determine if cattle or crops are safer. this year's olive crop in sonoma county will be a lot smaller in the past. late rains disrupted the pollination process. as a result, the trees out there produce little or no fruit. the smaller crop is expected to create a shortage of locally produced olive oil. one owner of a company is warning buyers to expect a shortage. jail overcrowding is forcing san mateo county to

look at building a new maximum security facility. the board of supervisors will hold a workshop this afternoon to discuss building a jail at a four-acre site on chemical way in redwood city. one proposal calls for a new facility that would hold $832 -- 832 male and female inmates and cost up to $165 million. the current jailhouse has nearly 1,000 inmates at a facility intended for less than 700. mothers with less than two years left behind bars could be allowed to serve the rest of their time at home. the women could be released as early as next week. they will have to wear gps tracking devices and check in with parole officers. only mothers convicted of nonserious, nonsexual crimes will be eligible for this early

day. this is the third time this has happened to these residents there. 7:24. a san francisco woman is the latest person convicted of posing as a victim of the san bruno explosion. on friday, 26-year-old nisha taylor pleaded no contest to charges of second-degree burglary, offering a forged document, and identity theft. after the explosion, taylor and her boyfriend told government officials all of her belongings and identification had been destroyed. they told police they rented a room from one of the owners of the burned homes. taylor faces up to two years in state prison when sentenced in november. 7:24 let's go to sal. >> we have an unusual situation, southbound 17 in the santa cruz mountains. right here -- actually, it's really not in the santa cruz mountains. it's in campbell at hamilton. there's some sort of police

years in prison. 68-year-old timothy anderson was known to dr. syad to his former dermatology patients. there were 30 victims treated out of a home office in the sunset district. he pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without a license and scamming patients out of $150,000. with time served, he will probably be out of prison in a few years. a trial is underway for an oakland man accused of killing another man over a stolen ipod. in opening statements yesterday, prosecutors claim that 22-year-old pierre rushing got out of the car on international boulevard and shot 25-year-old ja'wan taylor on april 15. defense attorneys say there's really no direct evidence and the case is shaky because it's based on testimony from drug users and prostitutes. 7:34. well, the regents for the university of california meet thursday in san francisco. they will consider raising

tuition. "the chronicle" reports that fees could go up at least 8% or as much as 16% every year through the year 2016. the annual undergraduate tuition would rise from possibly 12,000 right now to 22,000 in four years. that doesn't even include books, room and board. uc says they need the money to cover state budget cutbacks and a growing enrollment. town, the mount diablo school board is expected to decide whether they will convert clayton valley high school to a charter school. the board will approve the petition or deny it. if the board votes to approve the condition with conditions, those conditions will have to be met by february 1st. if they approve the charter tonight, it will be in place for three years starting in the fall of 2012. 7:35. hatching now in southern california. >> the search is on for an 8- year-old boy described as severely autistic. the boy ran away from his

elementary school near big bear nearly 24 hours ago. lin net romero is live in -- lynnette romero is live in twin peaks to tell us why this search is different from other reasons. >> reporter: one of the reasons, the autism. joshua is very afraid of strangers and loud noises. so there's concern that he might run away from help or run away from the helicopters. they are concerned about that. the other thing that's going on this morning,s sheriff's department here, one of the things that's happening is severe weather. we've had a couple of big downpours. a lot of thunder and lightning. that's really impacting this search. let me tell you a little bit more about 8-year-old joshua rob. he disappeared while on the playground at grandview elementary school. it was about 11:00 yesterday morning. he was apparently known to be a flight risk because of his autism. somehow he got out. his parents tell us they haven't seen him for at least a

week, maybe longer. they recently lost their home to foreclosure. this son was placed in protective custody. they are very concerned about his son -- about their son being out there in this terrain, it's rugged terrain. it's wilderness area. it's cold. now it's wet. he's been out in the wilderness all night long. the hope from searchers here is he's been able to find some shelter and he's hunkering down and he's waiting for help. i can tell you a few minutes ago, we saw a helicopter go overhead. we do know they've begun the air search. there are at least 60 searchers on the ground and other locations at the command post as part of their search. so they are definitely increasing their searches now that the sun is up. back to you. >> as soon as we get more information, we'll bring it to you. let's check in with sal. see how your commute is going. sal? >> you know, traffic is actually moving along pretty well if you are driving let's

the low down off point conception, santa barbara, l.a. continues to come pump in a lot of moisture. not only in southern california. there's flight delays out of san francisco believe it or not. also in the sierra nevada, sacramento valley, maybe lake county and there they are. i mean, there's plenty there. they -- they erupt and then fall apart when you get to sunset. we just wend to get some of the -- some of the higher clouds. occasionally something could move in. that's why i mentioned it. that fog by the coast is gonna keep temperatures held in check. there are components of an onshore wind. it's not howling or anything. but it's there. i think it will ramp up tonight into tomorrow. you can see there's some really good bumpers in the high country. some of that could produce heavy downpours.

an amazing rescue in utah. police say a car hit a motorcyclist. he became trapped underneath. you can see several people rushed to push the car up on its side. the motorcycle rider was pulled out from underneath and taken to the hospital. he is said to be in critical condition this morning. the driver of the car was not hurt. the power is back on for nearly 3,000 nevada residents who lost power last night. we talked to pg&e earlier. they say an underground equipment failure caused the outage. about 3500 customers in southern nevada were affected but by 1:15 this morning, service was back on for everyone. the labor department says job growth in the bay area is

fire started. the firefighters found the bodies after responding to a fire early sunday morning at a building near coolidge and nicole avenues. investigators believe the victims were stabbed and the fire was started to cover up the crime. a witness reported several people running away from the building after the fire started. jail overcrowding forcing san mateo county to consider building a new maximum security facility. the board of supervisors holds a workshop this afternoon. they will talk about building a jail on chemical way in redwood city. one idea calls for a new facility that could hold 832 male and female inmates t could cost about 165 million. the current jail houses almost 1,000 inmates inmates in a facility that was intended for less than 700. well, california plans to release some female inmates who are mothers. it's part of a plan to ease prison overcrowding.

we're continuing to follow developing news of a flight diverted to st. louis this morning. the u.s. airways flight from new york to phoenix was diverted to lambert field in st. louis when three passengers on board the plane began acting suspiciously. a spokeswoman for u.s. airways say the plane was checked and cleared along with the 128 passengers. the plane will resume its flight to phoenix lateert this morning. this is the latest -- later this morning. this is the latest of security scares around the 10th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. a desperate search is happening right now for an 8- year-old autistic boy missing in the woods near big bear.
