setting up an interview date. police set up stings that advertise prostitution. >> they have pictures of the girl, where they are located at and phone numbers. they usually keep the locations very vague. this one says south bay. then once you call they direct you to a room. the girls come here, number one there's more money. there's more money in the south bay. so they'll come here and make a little bit more money and they don't have to worry about getting hurt. >> reporter: tonight police ended up in a motel on first street. police say the prostitute had made a double date when officers showed up they said a client was already there. he was cited and released and had nothing to say. >> if you come back you will be arrested. >> reporter: the alleged prostitute who police say is from florida will spend the night in jail before being released on a misdemeanor charge. but police say more will come. >> the lack of street level

under cover is gone now. un unfortunately our funding has disbanded due to budget cuts. and it's aware by the prostitutions that the funding is gone live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. police in oakland call it unacceptable. a toddler just 2 years old was a victim of a crime today as she and her mother were robbed in broad daylight. it happened just before 10:00 this morning near 47th and bancroft avenue. a woman was walking with her daughter and pushing a baby stroller when she was confronted by a man and a boy. the robbers yanked the necklace off the woman's neck and took her rings as well. then they grabbed the 2-year-

old and took her necklace and rings. >> it just gets to you when a child is a victim of such a robbery. >> the increase of gold has led to more robberies. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live at st. ignaciuos church to describe why the timing of this robbery is bad. >> reporter: part of the church still has power tonight, the lights are on but in another section it is blacked out. and that's because somebody just walked up and ripped out cooper wiring from this building early this morning. the lights are out in the office of st. ignaciuos catholic church but the work

goes on. rich confetti had to extension cords to power computers. >> this is the box where they cut them. >> reporter: after cooper thieves preyed on his church for the third time this summer. >> they steal plants out of the parking lot all the time. >> it's just amazing to me this has happened not once or twice but this is now the third time. it's unbelievable. >> reporter: the church already has a network of surveillance cameras and while the thieves were out of view this time, the cameras did record several cars passing by at the time of the burglary so the church is hoping witnesses will come forward. confetti says the church wants to put new wiring understood ground but that job could cost $15,000 at a time when there's little money to go around, people here are banking on faith more than ever. >> lord will provide hopefully. we'll find it some where. >> reporter: back here live, some have actually spent the

night here in the past just to be on the look out. two pleasanton teenagers are hospitalized tonight after being stabbed. a third team is under arrest. the 16 and 17-year-old victims were found on first street suffering from stab wounds about 2:00 this afternoon. police say witnesses identified the attacker and a 16-year-old was arrested on bernal avenue. investigators say all three knew each other and are high school students with an ongoing dispute. interstate 580 is clear tonight after a collision between a big rig and two cars made a mess of the evening commute. the crash happened in the eastbound lanes of 580 not far from the foothill road exit. one of the cars ended up on b.a.r.t.'s right of way delayed trains. all this happened around 2:30 this afternoon but traffic was tied up for hours.

the highway patrol says all three drivers went to the hospital with minor injuries. investigators say the truck drivers did not see one of the cars as it changed lanes. now to brentwood, where two teenage girls are in serious injury. the driver was headed west on balfore road between sellers avenue and brentwood boulevard. for an unknown reason, the driver lost control of his car. it took 30 minutes to free the driver. a group of small business facing eviction is fighting to stay put. the companies have started a petition drive. the port ordered them out because of safety code violations but the tenants suspect the city is trying to clear them out ahead of the america's cup races. now they're hoping the petition will pressure government officials to let them stay. a meeting is scheduled for

tomorrow between tenants and city officials. sensoni has announced it's final show before it's forced to find a new home in san francisco. the circus dinner theater must clear out to make way for the california's cup. teatro mansoni says they are negotiating reopening at a different waterfront property. president obama presented the congressional medal of honor to a new marine for his extraordinary courage in afghanistan. dakota meyer is the latest recipient of this highest honor. meyer disobeyed orders and repeatedly went into a kill

zone and saved 36 people and recovered four. myer now wears the name of the four who did not come home on a bracelet. he joins four living recipients of the medal of honor. while myer was being honor, four memorials were held in the nation for those who died that day, it was his request. >> reporter: here at this cemetery in the small central town of escalon, family and friends gather to honor a young hero and to thank the medal recipient who tried to save him. u.s. navy hospital coreman james layton was 22 years old when he died this month. he was with a group of marines when he was ambushed.

marine sergeant dakota myer who received the medal of honor today found layton's body draped over the marine the body of water he tried to save. >> he looked me in the eye and said, i let him down. i didn't bring him back alive. i said no you didn't. it's what happened, i said you brought james back so we could honor him and bury him with the honor he deserves. myer wanted layton and the three other servicemen who's bodies he retrieved at great risk to himself that day to each have their own ceremony today. but layton's parents didn't mention their son's purple heart or gold star or his dream of one day having his own music studio. instead they spoke of dakota myer. >> thank you so much for bringing home my son. and letting us bury him and get him -- give us all the peace

that we needed. in order to go on. >> reporter: rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. . myer is just the third person to serve in the iraq war afghanistan wars to earn the medal of honor. he's also the first libyan marine to be honored since 1973. myers heroic actions left him with shrapnel wounds to his arms. the postal service says ending the need to deliver letters the next day could save the agency 3 million dollars. the agency is looking for ways to trim $30 million to return to profitability. the move would mean possibly laying off 5,000 work ers. and closing distribution sites across the country. at five facilities will get a closer look to see if their closure is warranted here in

famed chef thomas keller had quite a wake up today. the bakery he owned has now caught fire and closed. jana katsuyama is tells us how this is affecting his restaurants. >> reporter: it is having an impact, right now bushon bistro is open but next door the bush on bakery is closed. this afternoon signs on the door read temporarily closed. while workers at famous chef thomas keller bushon restaurant were inside cleaning up. fire crews say they got the call about 5:30 a.m. after employees noticed smoke and flames above the bakery's oven. the flames burned through the

roof and attic space. >> once we started opening up the holes we started getting more smoke down into the building itself. >> reporter: all five employees who were inside got out without injury. the owner, chef thomas keller arrived to survey the damage, taking photos and looking at the debris. they are just relieved everyone made it out unharmed. >> at this point we're still taking a look at everything that happened. we're just glad the staff is out safely. that was our main concern. >> reporter: the fire also affects bushon's other restaurants. today tourists and many locals were upset. >> it's a bummer, we wanted to take bread with us, and we couldn't. it's a bummer for them. >> hopefully they can repair quickly and be back up online

so we can come back and enjoy it. bushon's baker did tell us they had enough break in stock to cover them for the day. but they will be back tomorrow morning to see what can be done. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. the contra costa county coroner reported today that bones found were human bones. an anthropologist is working to determine if the bones belonged to an indian american. it's not known if the bones are that of a male or female. detectives released this photo taken from surveillance video of the black ford explorer that the men are

thought to have arrived in. the state has approved $50 million to improve the approach to the antioch bridge. the project would add freeway connectors between highway 4 and that approach. it will move forward as long as the bay area toll authority and the project to its long arranged plan. the project is part of the toll bridge rehabilitation program. congress is cutting funding to bike paths. the treasury department inspector general opened an investigation into solyndra today. the department is looking into the actions within its own

financing bank which guaranteed the loan to the fremont based solar company. meanwhile the house economy on energy and commerce released an e-mail from an unidentified obama administration official back in january. that e-mail reads, the optics of solyndra will be bad. the timing will likely coincide with the 2012 campaign season heating up. republican presidential hopeful michelle bachmann brought her tea party message to the bay area today. and as ktvu's jade hernandez reports the candidate took jabs at the obama administration even making reference to one bay area company. the event began the minute michelle bachmann stepped out and greeted alex selokoski. once the strong rally crowd drew applause. >> what a pleasure to be in marin county where the tea

party is alive and active. >> reporter: there were issues she addressed with the a 150 people who paid at least 100 bucks to hear her speak. >> the obama administration only took them nine days to bring that project off the shelves and bring money to solydra. but the candidate also had to defend her recent remarks about the hpv vaccine which she called dangerous. >> at the conclusion of the debate, a woman came to me very distraught, she thanked me for my remarks, she told me her daughter had a negative effect to the vaccine. and that's all i related. >> they didn't like the change they got the last time around. they're really unhappy. >> i think it's anybody's game

at this point. it's very exciting. very dynamic. >> reporter: jelokoski founded the first tea party in the bay area. support is growing. >> we can do this, i want you to know it and we will do it. >> reporter: in san rafael, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. a little later an exclusive ktvu field poll reveals voters thoughts on congress and california's new senators. the numbers are in unprecedented territory, that's in about 12 minutes. and another mild day today. this was the fog this afternoon as it shot across the bay. big push of fog tonight. so it's going to be a day tomorrow very similar to what we had today. that just means temperatures on the mild side. hot spots tomorrow, friday are just going to be in the 70s. forecast highs tomorrow will be about the same as the observed daytime highs from today. so you're going to see lots of upper 70s, where you might expect 80s or even 90s in places this time of year.

a spike in crime in a popular area of san francisco has prompted police to increase patrols. david stevenson tells us who thieves in the mission district are targeting. >> reporter: as summer nears an end, police hope that an alarming spike in crime are coming to a close as well. robberies jumped a whopping 65% in august. >> there's always an up tick in crime when the days are longer. >> reporter: criminals went after high tech easy to steal items. the targets of many of these robberies are smart phone users which have replaced atm customers as easy prey for

robberies. >> atm robberies are down. >> reporter: lieutenant marcota says mission district investigators recently made arrests in a robbery crime spree. >> we're riding up on people incurring either a knife or handgun. in some cases a simulated handgun and robbing people of cell phones and money. >> like give me your phone that kind of thing. oh really? straight up, that's scary. >> reporter: the robbers have not only targeted cell phone users. the owners of this store say they have been robbed three times recently adding to their decision to leave. robberies have dropped 20% over the last few weeks. david stevenson, ktvu news. the santa clara county district district attorney says

that a police involved shooting was legally justified. police say doe was holding five inch knives in each hand and charged the sergeant who then opened fire. doe had attacked the another officer seven years ago and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. top officials in the obama administration say that they were optimistic that two americans being held in iran will be released soon. secretary of state hillary clinton who was in san francisco for a conference says she is hopeful that iran will release shane bauer and josh fattal as a humanitarian showing. secretary clinton says she is getting assurances their release will happen. >> because we have received word through a number of sources publicly and privately that the decision will be executed on. >> reporter: iraq and the gulf state of iman are also working on the release of the two uc

offering them a loyalty offer. los gatos citizens for responsible development filed suit wednesday seeking an environmental impact report for the project at the los gatos business park. this evening the group's attorney told ktvu it's not against the development but wants ways to mitigate the effects of increased traffic and the loss of 300 trees. a plan to hike tuition for university of california students has been put on hold for now. the uc board of regents deliberated over their tuition increase. the regents told administrators they're not happy with that plan. >> we have to find more ways to get more money. we have to turn to the state, we have to turn to corporations

and we have to campaign. >> reporter: regents say they want to explore other options. an exclusive ktvu's poll shows californians view of congress are at an all time low. 86% said they disapprove of congress job performance with only 9% supporting the house of representatives. the previous low was 79% in march of last year. job performance has been declining since july of last year. currently 29% improved while 32% hold an unfavorable view. 19% had no opinion. senator dianne feinstein continues to hold a favorable approval albeit by a slim margin. with 39% disapproving. this is the closest margin since the former san francisco mayor was elected to the senate back in 1992. a plan to stabilize

in utah today the survivor of a fiery crash thanked the good samaritans that saved his life. >> how are you doing brandon? >> i'm alive man. how are you doing. >> reporter: brandon wright was riding his motorcycle on sunday, he crashed before sliding before the vehicle. his bike and car caught fire.

this is the dramatic video of the dramatic rescue. about 12 samaritans lifted the car and pulled wright to safety. >> i just wanted to thank those people who risked they're lives. a judge in florida ordered casey anthony to pay for the cost of investigating the death of her 2-year-old daughter. anthony was acquitted of the murder of caylee in july. the judge said she must pay nearly $100,000 because she repeatedly lied to investigators. the money due is for the search when caylee was thought a missing child, not for the death investigation. a fire started at a -- the fire burned for about 12 hours before officials said they got it under control.

the ship was taking on water but made it safely to port. in denmark, the small scandanavian party the said to have the first female prime minister. she wants to raise the retirement age to 67. in twitter land, ubf says a trader cost it $200 million in unauthorized trade. adobi was arrested. ubs says it may result in a loss for the entire quarter. a former financial advisor who worked for ubs in walnut creek is headed to prison for steals millions of the dollars.

a judge sentenced steven kobiashi to time behind bars for stealing money. prosecutors say kobayashi spent the money or gambling, drinking, cars and prostitutes. >> santa clara police are warning people about a series of bike deaths. police say they have received numerous reports of stolen bikes from residential areas. the bikes are usually taken from apartment balconies and patios. police are reminding people to lock their bikes and hide them from public view. there was cause for celebration today in one bay area school district. the state of california handed full control back to the emery school unified district. district officials presented an $867,000 check to state superintendent tom torleckson it represented the final payment on a state loan the
