kidnapping. this map shows where the crimes took place. a gas station at the shopping center. robert handa is here now with dramatic information about what happened, robert. >> reporter: well, we're at the plant shopping center in south san jose, it was right here where we're standing at this parking lot that police say the suspect in this case carjacked the vehicle after two shooting i incidents and a brazen escape. workers reported a customer at one of the pumps had been shot. this is a picture of the suspect. police say the stocky latino male wearing a white shirt and texas rangers cap sped off. >> that's a shot, it's really

surprising, it's scary. my coworkers, i just got done calling them and they're all shaken up. >> reporter: the suspect drove in this this sports nissan. police say at least one shot was fired, and the toyota driver is still missing sense the carjacking. >> we don't know if anybody was hit. if it had been a warning shot, an accidental discharge. at this point we are treating it as the worse possible scenario which is that the victim in this case which is still unaccounted for was taken with the suspect. >> reporter: again police are asking the public to look out for this man, possibly still driving the white toyota camera. police are not releasing details. but the man underwent emergency surgery and at this point is expected to live. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a san jose man accused of keeping explosives and firearms in his home faces ten felony

charges tonight. mark stedloft appeared in front of a judge to hear his arrangement. court documents shows stedlock has three prior convictions for separate offenses. the minister of iraq said he is optimistic that two jailed americans will be released soon. the minister is working to help free shane bauer and josh fattal but he said quote they're waiting for the next iranian move. the two have been in prison for more than two years. last month an iranian court accused them of spying but just days ago bail was set for them at $500,000 a piece. republicans are gathering to kick off their convention. they're excited about the

prospect of taking back the white house. a candidate reeled in controversy will be kicking off this convention. >> reporter: right now we're at the nokia theater where they'll be hosting the emmy's this weekend. but tonight bachmann will be headlining this convention. she will likely welcome a friendly crowd here tonight. michelle bachmann has often been described as a tea party favorite. a new field poll shows tea party republicans far prefer perry and mitt romney. but when she arrives at the state g.o.p. convention she could sway their minds. >> very happy michelle came. that's the reason i did come down here to see her. not that she's the top of my list, she's one of them. >> reporter: in the hours before bachmann's 8:30 speech, the convention this afternoon

economic politics. perry spoke at a meeting. he says the president's stimulus plan has failed. >> one in six work eligible americans cannot find a job. now that's not a recovery mr. president. that is an economic disaster. >> perry made three stops in iowa today including a tour of a coca-cola plant. another gop candidate herman kay campaigned in south carolina today. he said he would set up a commission for every american citizen. >> everybody, all man, all woman, anybody who's been abused by the epa you would be a candy candidate for the regulatory commission. >> he drew applause when he said his commission would fight

the regulatory. tonight we have a perfect example of just how desperate people are. ktvu's christien kafton was at a store where they had 600 applications. >> reporter: take a look. this store right behind me yes had 600 applicants. but others around the bay area has as many as 1,000. this is how spirit wants people to apply for their jobs. they want them to either apply online, on their computers or on computers inside the store. the job market can be downright scary these days. the 45 spirit halloween stores around the bay area are in hiring mode. as is manager robert young is back for his eighth year. he already works at a pharmacy but says the seasonal work is perfect to supplement his income. but competition for the jobs is tough. >> our store here in alameda, we have 173 applications.

>> how many positions? >> 30 to 40 depending on volume. >> reporter: cristina martinez is one of the applicants who scored a job. she says as a film student a costume store is a perfect fit and says it fits right into her lifestyle. >> it's a very good job for students particularly because it's seasonal. and they work around your schedule. >> reporter: in years past, they saw a lot of students like martinez but that's changing. >> now you have people that are from all ranges. from 16 up until their senior citizens. >> reporter: now with all that competition a lot of people will likely be disappointed. but spirit halloween workers tell me that as they get closer to halloween they need more and more workers and more applicants may come in for a few weeks work.

home sales went up about 12% when compared to august of last year. the federal reserve says those falling home prices are partly to blame for a slight drop. falling stocks which have eaten away at investment portfolio are also a factor. there is still the threat of a double dip recession. there was some good news on wall street today after the stock market finished it's second best week in a year. remarks from treasury secretary timothy geithner who called on -- to do more. congressman buck mchean of southern california and hean

from south carolina asked to delay the don't ask don't tell policy. they say the pentagon has not sent congress any finalized approved policies for implementing the change. a tucson arizona air force base is on lock down tonight because of a stand off with the man who may be armed. officials at the davis air force base say they're responding to quote suspicious activity. now the arizona republic newspaper reporting an armed civilian has barricaded himself inside a building. right now there are no hostages but they are taking precaution. >> somebody was seen carrying what might have been a weapon. it is our duty to investigate it. as such we're keeping the safety and security of our people in the highest regard. >> reporter: of these two schools near the air base are also on lock down. more than a million packages of birth control pills have been recalled it could

it happened near the gillman exit. the only thing you can pretty much do is go up to san pablo and go down san pablo but presumably san pablo is probably backed up big time with people trying to do just that. again a fatal accident causing major problems tonight on interstate 80 in berkeley. we have new information and video just into our newsroom to share with you about that plane crash at the reno airway we told you about at the beginning of the newscast. the plane goes down and crashes and judging by this video and what we now know the plane did not crash into the stands as you can see clearly in that video. at this point we're being told the plane is a mustang p51- galloping ghost. this is video taken by a spectator at the races. we do know witnesses are saying they've seen four people taken away at stretchers to waiting

ambulances as many as six ambulances were seen leaving the races. at this point the crowd is being told to leave. we're going to stay on top of this developing story and bring you updates just as soon as we get new information. a warning now for women tonight. 1.4million packages of birth control pills have been recalled leaving many women potentially unprotected. janine de la vega is live tonight in san jose to tell us the two things women those pills in question need to do. gasia, we're here in front of the cvs pharmacy, they carry three of the six types of birth control pills that have been recalled. now pharmacists told us that as soon as they got a m emo this morning they removed the drugs from their shelves. obgyn doctor ray jurn talks about birth control on a daily basis. but now when she scans their charts she'll be specific to

look at which kind of birth control they take so she can warn them about the recall. >> i was very concerned about my patients because they could potential get pregnant because they're taking the pills like they should but it's not working effectively. >> reporter: the six pills that have been recalled are all generic. she thinks many don't know about it yet and some don't even know what type of pill they're taking. >> which one was i taking? i had to ask the doctor. am i taking any of the ones that are recalled. when they told me no, i was thankful. >> reporter: women should stop taking their pills and

local watershed to be able to serve those people. this project is under a project labor agreement which is going to ensure the local workers are going to be doing the work. we're not going to get contracts from out of state coming to do a lot of the work. workers are going to be here. they're going back to their communities, they're spending that money. construction of the new calav era s dam is expected to be complete by 2015. let's talk about the weather now because the weekend is just about here. what are we looking at? >> nice day today, looks like the weekend is going to warm up. it was cooler all week. saturday was very warm. last week, then on sunday temperatures started to come down. today's temperatures were on the mild side. warmer for the bay area weekend. and we even have some clearing out along the ocean beaches. now i think this bodes really well for our friends at the coast who have been in the fog most of the week. we're going to see less fog as

we move toward saturday and sunday. so clearing out on the avenues, clearing out at half-moon bay, more sunshine. so, your forecast highs these are the current temperatures right now. and then highs tomorrow are going to be a little bit warmer. sunday the warmest day of the week. and certainly the warmest day on the weekend. we could see temperatures as they eluded to perhaps into the upper 80s and 90s. that's pretty warm considering we're coming up on fall. we're a couple of weeks away from the equinox. so days are going to start getting shorter faster. the fog increases tonight. it's going to be back just as it's been. it's less influential on our climate. we're seeing more rapid clearing like we did today. that's good news for our friends who were counting on september and october. when you live out in the avenues you really do count september, october, november to be those really nice days. and so far september hasn't

produced it. but it looks like we're going to get some breaks out there for our friends out at golden gate park. out toward the avenues, out toward daly city. parts of san bruno. the overnight lows, 46 in santa rosa. that's cold right. that's one of the coldest numbers we've put up in months for the overnight low. so 46 degrees tomorrow morning. that is a cold start for you folks that go golfing early in the morning. i'm not a golfer but i know people go out there 5:00, 6:00 in the morning. the forecast as you move through your bay area microclimates then, it's 60s out at the bay. warmer for your saturday than it was today. you're going to find mid-70s, upper 70s as you get out toward the inland bay valleys then you see these 80s. when i come back at 5:45 specific number for saturday and sunday for your neighborhood. and then the five day forecast with your weekend always in view. i'll see you back here.

nasa says pieces from a dead satellite could fall to earth as early as next week. scientists say the 6-ton satellite will likely reenter the atmosphere about a week from today. saturday september 23rd give or take a day. they also say it will break into 26 pieces as it gets closer to earth with the heaviest piece weighing 350- pound. as of now they have no idea where the debris will land. they also say the odds of it hitting someone any where in the planet are one in 3,200. a teenager who says he spent the last five years living in the woods. why he says he did it. a bay area college football player murdered inside his home. why police say his victim knew the killer. the last of the four boys who escaped from a youth facility have been found. up next, who helped authorities find him. new at 6:00, it's the huge crater that that looks like an

the last of four teenagers that escaped from a juvenile center has been found. family members helped police locate the boy. a bay area community college football team is preparing for a big game tomorrow. but they'll be taking the field without one of their star athletes who was killed earlier this week. >> his number was nine, so i

have some nines ordered that will come in today. they'll wear nines on their helmets today. >> they won the season opener last week. but sunday night, the 21-year- olds mom found him shot and killed. johnson knew his killers and had actually invited them to the apartment says his mom. >> there were some transactions that were taking place. in the process it led to johnson's death. >> reporter: police have identified two suspects in the killing. they have arrested a 23-year- old man from fairfield but another suspect remains at large. officers say that man 18-year- old hassan mccaulie is considered armed and dangerous. johnson died from a single gunshot wound to his head. police in germany are questioning a teen who says he spent the last five years living in the woods. officials say the boy who is about 17 years old turned up at

berlin city hall last week. the boy insisted that he and his father began living in the woods after his father died. he said they followed a compass north for two weeks afterhis father died and that's how he ended up in berlin. solyndra was once the country's corner store for green job creations but just released e-mails show why it is fast becoming a bipart for bad choices. the secretary of state comes to san francisco with a message about putting women to work. and more live coverage from interstate 80 near the gillman avenue exit, a fatal accident that's causing a major accident at this hour. and we have just received new information about that fatal crash at the reno air races, it turns out the situation was much worse than first thought.

could a major loss in the bay area mean a loss for president obama. and we have new information and video that is just into our newsroom of that fatal plane crash that happened at the reno air races. i want to show you that video right now. this is home video taken from someone at the stands. what you can see here is essentially the aftermath of the crash. it looks like it happened relatively close to the grand stands and the new information that weaver just getting now from the reno fire chief. he is quoted as saying there are mass casualties that upwards of 60 people have been injured. 30 seriously, we also know that the pilot has died.

we're joined on the phone now by i believe someone who was actually at the that race by the name of peter. are you there on the phone? >> yes i am. >> can you tell me what you saw? >> well, basically we saw the planes as they were coming toward the crowd. this was a mustang called galloping ghost. he appeared to have some control issue then he pitched up violently. then there was like some radical movement. then it rolled over to the left and then basically went straight down and from our vantage point just appeared behind a tent. but we knew it was close to the stands. and it looks like it impacted the ramps very close to the bottom row of the stands. and there's also box seating down there, so that's probably where some of these injured were. >> peter we also had a quote from a person who was there saying that you know bits and

pieces just flew into the air. i'm assuming this plane was probably going several 100- miles-an-hour at the time. what happened immediately after the crash? >> immediately after the crash there was a will the of debris that flew up back into our view above the tent. so it probably, the degree that we saw going up probably went at least 75, 100 feet up in the air. and obviously there was debris that was scattering horizontally too. i'm sure that's what caused the injuries. >> what did you do immediately after the it happened. >> since i'm in the media, i'm not a photog but i headed as close as i could to get some shots. they weren't letting anybody close.

soon after they were asking for any medical persons who were in the crowd to come and help. >> we are hearing 30 people were injured seriously? >> no not really. tay basically created a barricade -- they basically created a barricade with emergency vehicles around the impact scene. so you really couldn't see even the video i shot basically is a video of emergency vehicles surrounding the site. so no i did not see any of the injured. >> okay well peter we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us. an eyewitness here to what happened out there at the reno airways. the shot of the plane is a p51 mustang. according to the information i have, a p51 mustang can go from 380 to 450 miles per hour. probably gives you some sense of how horrific that impact was. we're working to get more information on this information. but again 60 injured, 30 seriously according to the fire chief and unfortunately the

pilot of that plane killed. we're continuing to follow breaking news. interstate80 at gillman this is the eastbound direction is the scene of an accident late this afternoon. you can see emergency crews and their vehicles right in the middle lanes of interstate 80 eastbound. traffic is squeezing by essentially what we call the fast lane and slow lane. i just checked ktvu.com's traffic section. traffic is backed up to the maze. late this afternoon ktvu learned the house energy committee is ramping up its questioning about the now defunked solar company solyndra. ktvu's patti lee joins us now with the political fall out. >> reporter: we had a chance to analyze this stack of e-mails earlier today and they warned

the white house that solyndra which shut down in august could hurt the 2012 campaign. the building, the parking lot here are devoid of employees. the failure here is becoming a rallying point for republicans. once the poster child of president obama's clean energy program, solyndra is looking more like an achilles heel. >> anybody heard about this company named solyndra. >> reporter: bachmann hailed the failed company as a symbol of the failed administration. >> $550 million they never run a profit. they had an e-mail that said we think they're going to run out of money by september. >> reporter: we read through those just released white house e-mails. some warned the company might default. and that loaning money to the struggling company not once but twice could easily be portrayed as bad judgment or worse. >> i don't think we're talking

issues that secretary clinton is focusing on. >> reporter: they focused on issuing ranging from health care to trade. but the u.s. secretary of state today turned the talk to women and the global economy. it's been called the largest gathering of foreign diplomats in san francisco. since the 1945 signing of the u.n. charter. >> we've been very proud to host this. >> good morning. >> reporter: the asia pacific conference wrapped up today with the women and the economy summit featuring a keynote speech by secretary of state hillary clinton. >> we need to unlock a vital source of growth that can power our economies in the decades to come. and that vital source of growth is women. >> reporter: clinton called on the 21atec member makes to adopt a declaration supporting rising women leaders and improving women rights and access to capital in their home country. >> because a rising tide of women in an economy raises the

the court today struck down a ban on day laborers in the city of redondo beach. the city issued the ban because they said the laborers interfered with traffic and pedestrians. experts believe that this ruling likely will put an end to similar bans in dozens of other cities in the states as well as in arizona. could this be one of the big solutions to energy independence? i'm consumer editor tom vacar, the story still ahead. as we continue to follow breaking news, this is video from a witness of a plane crash in reno. we're getting new information on just how many people are reported killed and injured. and in 10 minutes i have the forecast for your bay area weekend. one of these weekend days is going to get near 90, i'll tell you which one. it's the huge crater that looks like an open wound from that deadly san bruno pipeline

you may remember seeing this video earlier this week when we showed it to you here at 5:00. the heart stopping rescue was caught on camera after a motorcyclist is pulled from beneath a burning car. so bystander sprang into action after that fiery crash on monday near salt lake city utah. tonight that motorcyclists a 21- year-old college student is recovering and talking about his ordeal. >> i'm alive, man. how are you doing? >> reporter: brandon wright says his motorcycle burst into flames after colliding with an suv. he says he usually wears a helmet but wasn't wearing one this day. >> i should have died when i hit the pavement. i should have died when i hit

the car, i should have died when the car burst into flames. but i didn't for some reason and i mean it just makes life just that much more precious to me. >> reporter: wright is recovering from multiple fractures in his right leg and pelvis. he says after he recovers he plans to buy the most expensive helmet he can find. utah law does not require helmets for dill motorcycle riders. back now to the air r iders -- for adult motorcycle riders. back now to the coverage of the plane crash. the plane a p51 mustang crashed very close to some box seat that is were right in front of the grand stands. there you can see a lot of people attending these races. the plane probably going several hundred-miles-an-hour at the time of the crash. the new information we're getting, there are some reports that as many as 12 people have

been killed. on the other hand a medical official is saying 75 people were injured. 25 critically, 25 seriously, but there are no reports of deaths. so again conflicting information in terms of how many people were either killed or injured. bottom line though, this was a horrific accident and it has caused at the very least a lot of very serious injuries. we're working to get more information as we do, we'll bring it to you during the course of this newscast and ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. green technology helped save the nation's energy independence and global warming problems but as ktvu consumer editor tom vacar reports, one of the leading candidates wind power has a serious problem of its own. it's a story you will see only on two. the director of uc berkeley medical institute says the wind power has cost competitive. >> with wind energy you don't get to choose when the wind turbines turn. in the western united states they tend to turn at night when

power is much less valuable. >> reporter: power electricity is made as it is used. there's no way to store it. >> if you could store power from wind power, it would make it much more efficient. >> reporter: now they could store the high pressure air under ground just like pge does in depleted gas and oil wells. >> we pump air into the ground when power is cheap and we let the air come out of the ground to generate electricity when the power is valuable. >> reporter: in other words, run compressed air not water or steam into a generator and create all the electricity you need. wind farm building anecto has a huge wind farm that sits over depleted natural gas wells. >> we're looking at this area

newsroom. that is the debris field. that's where chaos, just debris spread everywhere. people going in, trying to help each other out. that is what's really has been happening this afternoon now. here is the video of that crash. you see the one plane go by then another plane goes straight into the ground and that's where the explosion happened. that plane was a p51 mustang. that's an american world war ii fighter plane that was capable of hitting 300 miles per hour. during the middle of the race. officials say that it crashed into the box seats at about 4:30 this afternoon and that some 75 people were injured. the pilot was killed at impact. reports that 12 people who were on the ground were also killed. the national championship race is one of the premier events hosted in the reno area that draws thousands of people in the area. one of those residents is tonya
