brining who was there and watched the accident happen. tell us how close you were and what did you see? >> we were sitting in the east stand directly in front of where the plane crashed toward the stands. it was basically in a nose dive straight ahead us. it was so close we could see the cockpit. at the last second he veered away from the stands so close that we saw the prop and crash into the box seat on the tar tarmac that were about 20 feet in front of us. the plane didn't even explode, it disintegrated. it just liked like a fire ball. basically the shrapnel from the plane went away from us and we walked away without a scratch. >> you used the word prop watch. you sound like an experienced fan.
6:01 pm
>> this is the first time it's believed it's happened into the stands. usually when planes crash it's high speed racing. it's basically nascar in the sky. and as you bumper pile up they don't just pull over in the pits they crash. and you know so, but they go on with the races but this is the first time it's ever taken lives and it was absolute carnage. >> and, of course emergency crews evacuated the public. the spectators there as quickly as they could but that scene must have been chaotic and frightening at times. >> it looked more like a bomb exploded. there was really -- there's no fuselage. there was no airplane parts that you could see. the plane just disintegrated. it reminded me of when the plane went down in pennsylvania and there was carnage of people everywhere. bodies everywhere. it took out an entire section of the box seat from the tarmac. and every box seat holds 10 people.
6:02 pm
it must have taken out at least 20 boxes. >> certainly that's not the impact of the plane but certainly the debris field spread everywhere. >> we were lucky for some, i mean when we realized that we were going to survive the crash, you know we braced for the impact we saw the plane go into the pavement and he you know the pilot probably tried to save as many lives as he could and he veered at the last second trying to get away from the people. and the wreckage and debris went out away from the grand stands. other wise it would have been way worse. we have no idea how we walked away without a scratch. >> wow, certainly a lot of people there lucky. but certainly a lot of people there kind of sifting through the wreckage and hoping their loved ones were not injured. >> it was awful. there were bodies everywhere. and the people that looked like they had survived it, were i mean they were missing limbs. i mean it was absolute carnage. i guess you're saying there was only reported 12 fatalities.
6:03 pm
if that number doesn't go up i'll be absolutely shocked. because like i said every one of those boxes holds 10 people. and it was the biggest race of the day. it's the one that everybody is in their seats for. it's the best race. and everything was packed. >> now we've been reporting that 75 people were injured. probably half of them very seriously injured. so you're absolutely right. the number of dead could rise in this case. tonya brining, thank you so much. and i also spoke to a friend of mine that performs at the fleet week and air races. that is the p51 mustang. that plane is the plane that was involved in this crash. now mr. possum told me he says the debris field was very large and one of the other planes was hit. the debris spread out over a large area. over the years there's been
6:04 pm
many crashes at this air rices including in 2007 where there were three failed crashes in just four days. i worked in reno and covered the races and this is the first instance where i can remember that the plane crashed into the crowd. we will bring you more information as we get it tonight at 10:00 also. live in the newsroom, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. we are also continuing to follow developing news from berkeley that is having a major impact on the friday evening commute. it was a fatal accident on eastbound i80 between a motorcycle and a big rig. happened very close to the gillman avenue exit. as you can see here, it is still backing up traffic two hours after the crash. crews still in the middle of interstate working on this situation there. and traffic just barely getting by on one right lane and two left lanes. i want to show you another picture here to kind of give you another example of what it looks like. the crash there at the top of the screen, you can see that the traffic is backed up all

the way down into the mcarthur maze probably farther than that. the lanes heading south toward the bay bridge. traffic also very slow. presumably a lot of people slowing down to see what happened on the opposing lanes. in san jose, a search is on right now for a suspect who police say went on a one man crime spree that involves a shooting, carjacking and kidnapping. ktvu's robert handa is live now where the suspect was last scene with the surveillance photo of that man police are looking for, robert. >> reporter: well there is still an all out search for this person going on. police say the man has not been seen since he car carjacked a vehicle here in this parking lot. this afternoon police investigators collected evidence including fingerprints from this stolen black nissan z sports car. the vehicle police say the suspect drove into this chevron gas station at curtner and lincoln avenue and at point- blank range shot a man pumping

gas into his mazda video. this surveillance camera shows a stocky latino man wearing a white t-shirt and texas rangers cap. >> it's scary, my coworkers inside i just got done calling them and they are all shaken up. >> reporter: the suspect abandoned the black z and hijacked the camera a mile away. police say a shot was fired and the toyota driver is missing. >> so we're doing everything we possibly can to locate this individual and equally important locate and do a welfare check on the victim. i just got off the phone with police investigator jason dwire who just told me that san jose police in the next few minutes will be issuing an amber alert. they are confirming a stranger abduction in this case. they are going to be looking for a white 97 lexus as opposed to the white camera.

6:08 pm
>> reporter: the bishop who's now repaired home will be happy to see it now. >> the hole not being closed is amazing to us. it should have been done a long time ago. >> reporter: crews say final certification had kept them from doing so. the next issue, where to put a memorial for the eight people now gone. >> i think they should be remembered for a long long time. >> something that will really be reflective of the communities interest in care for what happened here. >> reporter: rebuilding the destroyed homes remain some what a contentious issue. >> whether it's pg & e's fault. the city's fault. the residents themselves. but i think that more should have been done in a year's time. >> i just wish they could speed up the paper work and get it
6:09 pm
done faster. so in a month, the the crater will be gone, the road will be opened and the neighborhood will be back under construction. the final say came today over a dispute on pier 48. ktvu was there when business owners learned they had to move. >> reporter: fire officials and building inspectors pointed out dozens of what they said were potential electrical hazards. we also spoke to some of the high tech entrepreneurs that work here. >> keep focused, make repairs. >> reporter: but at the end, the board said it was too unsafe to let them stay. >> i very much fear for their safety. >> i have an initial concern to

make sure my first responders, when we come to places like this there's additional hazards. >> the ten tenants need to be out by the end of the month. some tenants have questioned whether this sudden concern is to allow america's cup organizers to take control of the pier. >> it addresses the water around the pier 38. that is what that draft is focused on. we do not currently have any plans nor is it part of the environment impact report to use any of the structure of pier 38 for america's cup. again that was rob roth reporting from san francisco. newly released e-mails show that the obama administration privately worried that solyndra could fail at a politically sensitive time. e-mails from budget officials warn that the company might default and said that loaning
