afternoon. temperatures will continue to climb for the next several days. we'll take a look at your morning lows and more on the warming trend coming up. the national air races in reno have been cancelled after yesterday's crash. yesterday a plane crashed. three people were killed including the pilot and more than a dozen people were critically injured. eric just talked to a bay area resident who witnessed the accident. >> reporter: as you can imagine she was horrified. the investigation is just getting started. organizers have confirmed that they will be meeting with members as they conduct the investigation. the goal is to figure out what led up to this horrible crash yesterday afternoon. we now know that the pilot, 74 year old jimmy lee ward --

>> we are having technical problems. we'll check back in in just a moment. time now 7:02. san francisco police say two innocent bystanders were hit by gun fire as officers fired at a fleeing suspect. officers were chasing a man. police say they opened fire when they saw the person pull out a gun. he wasn't hit but two bystanders were. authorities closed off a section of broadway early this morning and they are still trying to figure out how many officers were involved in the shooting and how many rounds were fired. it is unclear why police were chasing the man in the first place. gun fire erupted in sunset district. a 22 year old man was shot to death just after 1 this morning near 35th avenue. the victim was shot several times in the chest. police have not made any arrests in that case. south bay authorities continue to look for a man

involved in a shooting, carjacking and kidnapping. alley is live at the apartment complex in san jose. >> reporter: san jose police say the last time they saw this man was 6:00 yesterday evening. they spotted him and shot at him has the man ran into this housing complex. he ran right down that street into the housing complex. after that police began a search immediately of this housing complex that you are looking at. for the next several hours police continued searching through every residential complex on this entire lock. this is king and mabry in san jose. at about 5:00 this morning nearly 12 hours later they called off their search. police have still not found this suspect. this morning we watched about 80 officers, many in plain clothes and unmarked cars. they broke down their command center and left the scene. here is a picture of the suspect they are looking for.

police believe this man attempted to rob and then shot a man at a willow glen gas station at 11:00 a.m. yesterday. an hour after that police believe the same man then carjacked and kidnapped a woman at the plant shopping center about a mile away from the gas station. san jose police say people who live in the area should be on alert. >> we don't want to give the false impression of safety to the public. a very dangerous criminal was last seen in that spot. we have a heightened level of alert in case we see this person. >> reporter: friends and family members tell ktvu that cindy win was the victim. police tell me she is still unaccounted for. police say that they are basically starting their search for the suspect again this morning from scratch. they are asking for the public's help. they want anyone who may

recognize that man to give san jose police a call. more un14th the uc berkeley graduates jailed in ran ran. the defense attorney for fattal and bauer say their plan is in limbo. two judges are needed to sign off on the bail. so far only one has done so. earlier this week iranian president said they would be released within days. both men have been in prison for more than two years accused of crossing into the country illegally and spying. bassler is accused of killing jerry mellow and land manager last month. it is believed he is hiding in a forest near fort bragg. authorities say they have recovered a field of evidence left behind. the 15 year old nevada boy who was arrested with a grenade launcher earlier this week is out of custody. police found the weapon in the

back seat of his car on tuesday. theyv determined that the launcher was likely spent and supposed no real danger. investigators say the boy's brother is in the military and likely kept the canister after a training exercise which is not against the law. the boy faces charges possibly for driving without a license. police say a child is to blame in the small chlorine explosion earlier this week. it happened on wednesday night at the mid town apartments. part of the building was evacuated after some residents reported smoke and an odor. police say a nine year old boy was playing with chlorine tablets. apparently they caused a chemical reaction. people have been ordered to boil their water. the effected area covered about 8 blocks around wood side plaza bordering virginia avenue. a resident upgrading his

live look at the east bay. two high clouds drifting overhead. partly cloudy skies for the bay area. >> let's go back to eric who joins us live from the stead airport. >> reporter: we have seen activity pick up out here in the last half hour or so. officials coming and going on golf course. this crash happened back this way past the grand stand. this investigation is really just getting started this morning. we have confirmed that members of the reno air race, the officials are meeting with the ntsb this morning. the goal here is to figure out exactly what led up to this terrible crash yesterday afternoon. we know 74 year old pilot did call for some kind of a hay day right before he crashed his p- 51 mustang. we did catch up with a woman

and her mother from hayward. they have been coming out here for years and yesterday were sitting so close they told me they could feel it. they tell me they think the pilot made a last minute move to avoid hitting more people. >> it was like a shock wave and all you saw were chairs and bodies and coolers and stuff flying everywhere. and the plane was gone. there was no wreckage l. was no fuse lodge. there was nothing. we felt it. >> reporter: and considering the scope of this disaster you can only imagine that the numbers are still developing at this point. we do know three people died. 50 some people have gone to various area hospitals. about a dozen of them in critical condition. we are getting updates throughout the morning on that. we are also hearing about what could be a private memorial out here at the airport. we are hearing that it is going

layoffu -- he faces 49 charges. police in new york are looking for a fugitive soldier who escaped military cust aid. a man hunt is underway near fort drum. military was arrested for burglary. thursday night officials say he stole his parent's truck and led police on a chase. he ran off on foot. he is considered armed and dangerous. a memorial service is taking place today in the united kingdom for the four miners who died after their mine flooded. the mine flooded on thursday after a wall holding back water failed. rescue crews managed to find the bodies yesterday. >> this is a very serious tragedy, the like of which we have not known in south wails in these mining valleys for a very long time. it is pretty terrible. >> three other miners managed to escape. officials say it is too early

thousands of bay area nurses are preparing for a one day strike next week. as many as 23,000 registered nurses will take part. the hospitals say they plan to bring in replacements to stay open. the strike comes after proposed cutbacks. 34 hospitals are expected to be hit by the strike. they include sutor, children's hospital and the medical based medical centers in oakland and berkeley. 1.4 million birth control pills are being recalled.

mustang crashed. it appears that witnesses spiraled out of control. two spectators died along with the pilot of the plane. 56 others have been injured. stay with us here on ktvu mornings on 2. we are going to go back to reno for an update. there are no signs of a gunman and his carjacking victim. police know time may be running out for a woman missing for nearly a day. >> reporter: police told people who live in this housing complex to either shelter in place or avoid coming home all together. this is where san jose police had focused their search for a suspect. at 6:00 yesterday police saw that man and shot at him as he ran into the housing com plex. after searching this complex and just about every other building on the entire block

for the next 12 hours police called off their search. they still have not found this man that they are looking for. here is a picture of the guy police are looking for. police believe the man seen in this surveillance picture attempted to rob and then shot a man 11:00 yesterday afternoon. an hour after that police think the same man then carjacked a woman at a shopping center about a mile away. friends and family say she was the victim of the carjacking. as of 6:30 this morning she is still unaccounted for. police don't know where she is and they believe it is possible that the carjacking suspect may have taken her with him. police want people in the neighborhood where this man was last seen to be on alert this morning. >> this person is a very dangerous individual and the last place he was seen on foot was in that area. if he hasn't been captured there then i don't know that we

are looking at him staying there for any period of time. >> reporter: it was around 5:00 this morning when we watched police call off their search for the suspect in the housing complex. there were about 80 officers that were a part of the search. the shelter in place has lifted. as we take you back here live people are allowed to go back to their homes. there is still a police presence out here. you are looking at the northwest corner of king and mabry in san jose. police want people to be aware of their surroundings and report anything that seems unusual. they want anyone who may recognize the man in the surveillance video to give them a call. live in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. one person is in the hospital following a stabbing at the in and out restaurant. it happened just after 11:00 last night and it is unclear what led up to the stabbing and

who was involved. neighbors say they noticed three baseball caps scattered at the scene along with pieces of clothing. police are on the hunt. officers is answered a domestic disturbance call yesterday afternoon. the female caller said 22 year old blake was in the basement with a hand gun a. two hour standoff followed and a s.w.a.t. team set off tear gas. accused cereal killer gets his wish. a county judge granted him the motion to represent himself. the 77 year old millionaire is charged with killing four northern california women including two from the east bay. he argued he couldn't hire an attorney because he couldn't access his assets. he believes he was siphoning money from his account.

a former police officer at the center of a corruption investigation is now facing domestic violence charges. you are looking at a picture of 39 year old in jail on $1 million bail. charges include making terrorist threats. they are also suspected of taking drugs and other items from a police evidence facility and selling them. federal authorities are handling that investigation but he has not been charged in that case. fire officials tell ktvu fireworks sparked a vegetation fire. our camera was there as crews responded to that scene. crews put out the fire in about 2 and a half hours. no one was injured and no structures were damaged. a shelter in place order is over this morning after construction crews cut into a gas line. it happened yesterday afternoon at the veterans administration

hospital. fire crews responded to the scene and repaired that leak. next week the city of san bruno will start filling in a crater caused by the pipeline explosion. construction crews are using heavy equipment. residents say it is time to move forward. >> this will include actually finally closing the hole and providing temporary repairs to the immediate area so that we can open the area to through traffic. >> city leaders say ongoing investigations prevented them from filling in the hole because investigators needed to collect evidence. now the city has received the go ahead to cover and cap the crater. the people who work in the offices at san francisco's pier 38 will have to move. mayor ed lee toured that building yesterday along with fire officials and building inspectors. they pointed out what they say are electrical hazards and say the safety risk is too great to continue to let people work in

that building. >> usually i rely on the engineers and the professionals that do this job. they know what they are talking about. they were able to point out serious hazards that are immediate. >> some of the entrepreneurs who called pier 38 home are wondering whether they are being moved out to make room for america's cup. the bart extension will be delayed. bart wants to build a 10-mile stretch. the completion date has been pushed back to the fall of 2016 because of state funding delays and because progress on the highway 4 widening project has been slower than anticipated. witnesses are telling stories of terror as a crowd of fans watched in horror. the world war ii plane spiraled to the ground. this morning the investigation into what happened is underway and there is word that the community is going to hold a

memorial. eric is in reno this morning with the latest on what is happening today. what is the scene out there this morning? >> reporter: even though it is quite early here there are a lot of people kind of milling about. i talked to another pile hoot was out here yesterday when this crash happened. many people have seen this video of the crash. while it appears that the plane is going straight down he believes the piled tried to pull up a little bit right before impact. of course the pilot was 74 year old jimmy leeward. he was a fixture here. even those who did not know hame personally said they were well aware of him. he was a very experienced pilot. now the work of investigators is to try to figure out if there was some sort of a mechanical or techinal problem. the numbers we are getting are fluid. we understand they have confirmed that three people

standards of this event yesterday. of course it is much different. you have investigators on scene with the ntsp. and this morning we confirmed that organizers with the reno air races will be meeting. they don't have a time table at this point. once they have that meeting and have discussions we will expect we will be getting an update and we will bring that toot you when we get it. time now 7:39. more than two dozen tsa workers hat the honolulu airport were fired after an investigation found they did not screen checked bags for explosives. the employees were put on administrative leave in june as the tsa began the process of firing them. two employees told officials that thousands of bags were not checked properly. the union representing the workers said they were facing

and his carjacking victim. alley is live at the apartment complex whereophilussers tracked the gunman. >> reporter: san jose police say the last time they saw this shooting and carjacking suspect was in this apartment complex behind us. police say they saw the man running directly into the housing complex. police shot at him. this man managed to get away and police are still looking for him. about an hour ago we watched san jose police go door to door in the neighborhoods giving residents information about the man they are looking for. and for many of these residents they are just coming back to their homes this morning since this neighborhood was the focus for the search for the suspect it was in lockdown a lot of people were not allowed to return home. as many as 80 police officers, members of the s.w.a.t. team, others wearing plain clothes took part in the search of the housing complex a. lot of the residential complexes on

a bright and sunny start in san jose this morning. time now is 8:46. following breaking news. we are getting reports that kara kennedy has died of an apparent heart attack. she previously survived a near fatal bout with lung cancer. she was 51 years old. a grisly bear is being blamed for the death of a hunter from nevada. it happened yesterday in montana. officials say it started with two men including the 39 year old shot and wounded the grisly. the men tracked down the grisly and that is when the grisly attacked and killed the 39 year old. the other man proceeded to shoot and kill the bear. mese in maryland say a

fight between two college room mates ended in a fatal stabbing. investigators haven't revealed what led to the fight yet but they say the 19 year old suspect is under arrest. >> for a campus like this, school, city like this it is not normal at all to hear something like that happen. >> buoy state cancelled classes yesterday but campus officials say there is no ongoing threat to students. the nation's busiest border crossing will reopen today. the scaffolding fell. ten others suffered minor injuries. until now the crossing was partially closed. that crossing is the busiest in the nation with 50,000 vehicles entering and leaving the us every day. secretary of state visited the bay area.
