coverage. >> the death toll mounts in yesterday's deadly airshow crash in reno and what federal investigators say. >> a manhunt continues tonight for a gunman after a crime career expo in san josi takes a deadly turnto10. chopper 2 is live over the state of developing news in the search for an east bay nursing student as a body is found in this wooded area. >> complete bay area news coverage starts like now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne the death toll is mounting tonight after yesterday's fatal airshow crash in reno. ktvu's eric rasmussen is there with the very latest on the investigation. eric. >> reporter: ken, we can show you right now the ntsb and local authorities are preparing to give us another update here at the airfield. they are in a maintenance facility here and you see them setting up of the we're expecting them to tell us more about that investigation. one of the things that has helped them so much are the

photos and video that has come in and one thing that they seem to be focusing on is a possible tailpiece found while going through the massive debris field out here. from a neighbor's balcony, we wanted federal investigations in a line, combing this field for clues, they are looking for even the smallest pieces left behind when a p-51 mustang lost control at the reno air races on friday, slamming into the ground and into box seats filled with spectators. >> the thing broke, it wasn't his fault. it wasn't the wind. jerry thurman watched his friend and pelo pilot,imy leeward go down. >> . >> the aircraft was operating at low altitudes and high- speeds, pitched up, climbed briefly, nosed over quickly and impacted the ground at high-

speeds. >> reporter: at this afternoon's news conference, investigators described what so many saw with their own eyes, seven people, including the pilot died at tarmac and two more an the hospital. more than 50 were injured. one witness was so close to it all, she was amazed she wasn't one of them. >> when we realized that the plane signed or we weren't plan sure if shrapnel or debris would kill us. >> reporter: one of the big szwez this kind of an airshow simply too dangerous? we heard from reno's mayor and he said he would like to see the show gon o. we're inspecting to hear from federal investigator as they take the podium behind me, possibly in the next 15 minutes and we'll bring you an update as soons we get it. >> can you find more information and video from the airshow crash on our website at ktvu.com, look under the "u.s. and world news" tab. today there was another deadly crash at an airshow

involving a vintage plane. this time in west virginia. the accident happened in martinsburg. witnesses say the pilot was performing a precision maneuver when his plane wobbled and slammed into the ground. that pilot is reported dead. his name has not yet been released. officials say no spectators were injured. now to some developing news in the search for nursing student michelle le. volunteers combing a wooded area today in unincorporated alameda county found a body. jade hernandez just arrived there at the scene and joins with us latest. >> reporter: about 30 minutes ago we received an update from the hayward police department and we can tell you this evening that a body has been found. authorities cannot tell whether or not that body is a man or woman, the remains are so decomposed wftv we can tell you that the hayward police department is actually keeping us away from the area.

news chopper 2 can give us a clearer picture above us this evening. so far we know a volunteer discovered the remains today during a search for missing student michelle le. this is the eighth search since had he disappeared in late-may. they conducted the search in the sunol canyon areas and we have been told investigators are present at every one of the searches. to give you a better area where we are, we're not far from the pleasanton and sunol golf clubs joining us this evening is the sergeant from the alameda county sheriff's offices and thank you, sergeant for joining us. you have been back to the area where the remains were found. can you describe how difficult it is to get back there? >> this area is of a lightly- traveled dirt road. it's got the heavy brush in the area and again, it's just not traveled very often. >> reporter: not traveled very often and we're talking about

is it accessible by vehicle? >> potentially it could be. it's not the easiest road to go down, but yes, you could get there by car. >> reporter: this is a dual investigation. we have the hayward police department ability alameda county sheriff's office, can you describe what this investigation where it's going tonight? >> right now it's a dual investigation with hayward police and the alameda county sheriff's office. right now, the alameda crime lab is out there and they are collecting the evidence from this area. this is a crime scene. we have new technology, a scanner that basically takes a 360-degree picture of scene and that is what they are getting the information plugged into the camera. >> reporter: sergeant, with the alameda county sheriff's offices, this is an ongoing investigation. we're live here and we'll bring you any updates tonight at 10:00. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. meanwhile a manhunt is

underway for a dangerous parolee. eric savidge is live in san josi to tell us about a body discovered this morning. >> reporter: the woman who went missing during this crime spree has been found dead, according to police. investigators tell us the real estate agents was kidnapped at gunpoint yesterday by a violent parolee, who is still on the loose and at an afternoon news coverage, san josi's police chief it says hundreds of officers are working to track him down. >> absolutely no. 1 priority at the present time we have had this type of crime, again we do not expect these types of crimes in san josi very often and when we do, we absolutely go all out. >> reporter: crime tape crossedded off this area in san josi as police collected evidence at a house here. investigators say they found the body of an asia woman inside a separate structure on the property. police have identified her as 61-year-old cindy nguyen and investigators say she was kidnapped yesterday by this man, paul catallo, who has tied

to the house here. when we showed the photo to a neighbor, she had this reaction. >> the guy on there looked exactly like the guy across the street. >> too close for comfort and it's too close to our houses. it's crazy in the neighborhood. >> reporter: nguyen's friends got word that a woman's body had been found in the house. that the real estate office where she worked co-workers have crushed. >> this is very terrible news for us. cindy is a special person. she has very positive energy. she is a person that attracts a lot of people. >> reporter: meantime san josi police have launched a citywide manhunt for castillo. police say castillo's crime spree started yesterday with a robbery and shooting at a gas station and then just hours later police say he kidnapped g non-from the plant shopping center. >> we don't know what his

motivation is. we know he is a dangerous individual and want community to be aware. >> reporter: and police say castillo is targeting people at random and they do believe he is still in this area, but he is on foot. no car. if you spot him, don't go near him, but call 911. eric savidge, ktvu chars. we have new details on an officer-involved shooting in san francisco that injured two innocent bystanders. san francisco police say two officers on patrol on broadway near kearney just after bars closed at 2:00 a.m. and spotted a man believed to be want. they say the suspect pulled a gun and pointed it at the officers. at least one officer fired at man, identified as geez rodriguez of san pablo. he was not hit, but a man and woman on the street were struck by gunfire. police say their injuries are not life-threatening. rodriguez is in custody on

assault and weapons charges. oakland raider kicker sebastian janikowski allegedly faces charges in the alleged assault of a woman a year-ago. the contra costa times says a berkeley woman has accused janikowski of using force again her last year aytch pretrial hearing is set for thursday. hundreds of people joined in oakland taking a stand against violence. >> what do we want? >> pea. >> when do we want it? now! >> the celebration and rally began at cesar chavez school and went along normal boulevard. it included church groups and organizations. marchers say they especially want to reach out to young people. >> if we show young people that we can change and that we are trying to change something that it will eventually happen and that everyone will affect change in the community. >> after today's march people gathered front of city hall to

hear from elected officials and others about their efforts to fight crime and violence. the families of those two uc berkeley graduates held in iran are awake word on what the two may be freed from prison. earlier this week the iranian court appeared to agree to release shane bauer and josh fattal on $1 million bail, but any news conference iran's foreign minister said the judiciary would make its decision in the near-future. bauer and fattal have been held in iran flue for more than two years and they say they accidentally strayed into iran while hiking in iraq. delegates at the dopconvention in los angeles appear to have piricked their favorite g.o.p. presidential candidate. congressman ron paul was cheered on outside today's california republican convention in la. still a new poll shows his support in the state is weak, but candidates today are more

concerned with the straw poll where anyone registered at the event can vote on who will face president obama next year. >> straw polls are unscientific and they are all about heart and we're going to see which candidate came out here and is striking a chord with people and however unscientific, it will tell people that they have some activists behind them. >> polling wrapped up just about an hour ago, but the results won't be announced until tonight's banquet, 90 minutes from now. we'll have the numbers tonight on the 10:00 news. bay area fire crews practice a tricky type of rescue mission in a very unusual place. also it was coastal clean- up time on california's waterways and why some volunteers though think a south bay ecosystem is recovering. . the bay area warmed up nicely, coming up into the lower 90s for tomorrow and the warmest day in our forecast.

conference on the air crash there. >>we have members from our group here and i'm going talk about the tda work that happened today. specifically earlier this afternoon the city of reno, along with local agencies and non-profit organizations set up a family assistance center at the hyatt place hotel in rein i don't know. so any family member that has been affected by yesterday's accident can go to this center and be linked to appropriate resources and i encourage you to get the message out about that. it's very important for your community. the pda group is also assisting the washoe county medical examiner and medical examiner

continues their onsite work, specifically regarding the onsite investigator work. today the ntsb investigators spent the day documenting the wreckage site. they have identified and recovered portions of the accident aircraft tail. and as part of this process, the ntsb has been aided by a technical inspector with firsthand knowledge of these modified aircrafts. he has facilitated access to some examplear aircraft, which has really helped our investigators further understand the systems in these modified aircrafts. and what is planned for tomorrow? so the activities for the second full day of investigation include completing documentation of the wreckage site, and then to begin recovery of the parts, which will be transferred to a secure location offsite for detailed analysis. also, as i mentioned in our

earlier briefing, there has been a significant amount of photos and video material that has been submitted to our investigations. >> you have been listening tot live news conference by members of the national transportation safety board talking about the air crash at the reno air races. no change in the number of fatalities and still stand at nine dead and many others injured, as many as 50 or more. eight, we understand are still in critical condition. ktvu's eric rasmussen will have a full report tonight on the 10:00 news. in other newser the alameda county country identified the motorcyclist killed in berkeley yesterday afternoon. the chp tells ktvu walker was leading east, split the lanes on his motorcycle when he hit a toilet toyota camry and lost control and was run over by a semi trailer near the gilman exit. . libyan fighters today

claimed that they will will soon have control of the entire country, but the forces fighting muammar gaddafi loyalist troops are still battling street by street in sirt. it's one of the main strongholds left for the old regime. conditions are said to be dire with no medicine and little food. gaddafi's whereabouts are no known. >> united auto workers' new deal includes signing bonuses and $232-3 pay increase for entry-level workers as well as more jobs. this contract is the first since gm received government bailout money in 2009. a beloved corner of golden gate park in san francisco got some special attention today. volunteers gathered at the national aids memorial grove on the 20th anniversary of its groundbreaking of the people cleaned up the landscape and

began restoration of an victorian-era waterfall that is there. the park was founded as a place for people to reflect and remember those lost to the illness. dozens of bay area volunteers took part in a coastal clean-up today. miles, though, away from the coast. they spent the morning picking up trash from the guadalupe river, all part of california's coastal clean up day. while the river is far from the coast, all the trash that flow downs it will ultimately end up in the bay. volunteers say their efforts to protect wildlife are working. >> we have egrets and herons and mallard ducks and canadian geese here that we haven't seen in years and that is the true sign of an ecosystem improving. >> officials say coastal clean up day is the largest volunteer event in the state. >> i think today was a pretty good day to be outside, helping out and keeping things clean. mark tamayo in the weather

center. right now you can still see not much many the way of cloud cover with most of the fog to the north and south of bay area, leaving us with mostly sunny sighs. a bit of a breeze, especially around the bay. look outside currently, around san francisco bay, currently temperatures are in the lower 60s. there we are at bay bridge and mostly clear conditions out there. right now san francisco at 63. highs from today, nigh warm-up and, in fact, some 80s towards fairfield, antioch and livermore. santa rosa, 83 degrees. here we go with the forecast headlines for tonight, most life clear skies and some patchy fog develops late. of the extended forecast, warm up, but cooler temperatures move back into the region by wednesday and thursday. overnight lows, mostly in the 40s, pretty chilly in the north bay for santa rosa, 50s for hayward and san josi. factor fog coastside.

so most neighborhoods warmed up 5-10 degrees from yesterday's readings, patchy fog like i show you had returns overnight, but a little bit of an offshore develops and as a result everybody warms up, especially inland. especially by monday, warmest locations on track to reach the low 90s and could be approaching the mid-90s. our forecast model first thing tomorrow morning, some patching fog, but increasing to sunshine in the afternoon. we could have partly cloudy skies near the shoreline, but more 90s for tomorrow afternoon. 49ers play playing the cowboys tomorrow afternoon, mostly sunny skies and temperatures on the warm side, approaching the lower 70s. here is a look at those numbers for tomorrow afternoon and more 90s to report for antioch and brendwood, oakland in the upper 70s. san francisco tops out, and we'll get to sonar in a little bit, fremont in the lower 80s and san francisco downtown, just beautiful in the mid-70s. i was excited about that
