for a missing east bay nursing student? authorities are trying to identify a body found by searchers looking for michelle lay. >> michelle hasn't been seen now for nearly 4 months. during that time family and friends conducted several searches. tonight developing news. volunteers searching today near the canyon found a body. the remains were discovered in a remote area. we talked to investigators about this area that is now a crime scene. >> reporter: this area is secluded. the discovery was made about a quarter mile down that road. investigators are now trying to decide whether michelle's body has finally been found. chopper 2 shows us the she have wooded area where they

concentrated area. >> we have confirmed there is a human body that's been found. badly decomposed. >> bus it is the remains of michelle? a corner arrived after the discovery was made this morning. bones were found off of a path not easily accessed. police couldn't tell whether the body was male or family. >> this was off a lightly traveled dirt road. heavy brush in the area and it's not traveled very often. but not so narrow a car could navigate a path. >> i had come out earlier to ride my bike and saw there was police action going on but didn't know what it was. >> i didn't know they were out here searching at all. i was following helicopters and just scene what was going on. >> more than a week ago the one

accused of killing bay in court, to jealousy over this man. with no body and no murder weapon they refused to give up hope. your looking at the alameda county coroners van. it is carrying the remains down here today. they're not commenting until monday. we tried to reach out to michelle's afamily but they're not making my comment and it's not clear how long it will take to identify the remains found today. a few more details now on the case. lay disappeared on may 27th during a break from ray chemical nursing lesson. police classified the case as a homicide on june 6th. three months later police arrested a former friend of hers in connection with her death. >> the death toll from the

crash at the reno air race now stands at 9. the area where it occurred is quite. chairs litter the vip section where the mustang slammed into the ground. the debris covers more than an acre. eric is in reno where investigators say they recovered a key piece of evidence that could be linked to the accident. there were already three federal investigators on hand when this vintage airplane slammed into spectators sitting in box seats closest to the action at the air races on friday. today the investigators were joined by many more combing for clues. our camera caught this glimpse of the recovery operation from a neighbor's balcony. >> they have identified and recovered portions of the aircraft tail. >> the national transportation safety board delivered that break through in this late news conference but it's not clear

what role a damaged tail might have played in the crash. >> this took a few seconds to occur. it is going to take months to put the information together and analyze it. >> the plane broke. it wasn't his fault. it wasn't the wing or gas. >> he watched his friend and pilot jimmy leeward go down. 7 people including the pilot died on the tarmac. two more at the hospital. authorities now say 69 people were treated at local hospitals, some who walked themselves in today. tomorrow they will be out here collecting wreckage from the site. they're still trying to calculate the ultimate human toll of this disaster. people waited for hours to take part in a blood drive to help the victims of the plane

crash. three different blood thinners organized the donation drives. it will go to dozens injured and several of them critically. >> mark kelly was scheduled to fly in this weekend's now canceled air show in reno. the retired astronaut was scheduled to perform acrobatics in a world war ii airplane similar to the one that crashed yesterday. neither kelly or his wife was at the event during that accident. they will arrive in west virginia tomorrow to investigate another deadly crash at an air show this accident. it happened in west virginia at about 2:30. witnesses say the pilot was performing a precision maneuver when his plane wobbled and smashed into the ground. his name has not been released. there were no injuries on the ground. we have continuing coverage

of the reno crash on ktvu.com. >> police have identified the man they're looking for in connection to a carjacking shooting and homicide. alex savage says the man is aparolee and now the most wanted man in san jose. >> police collected evidence at a house here. investigators say they found the body of an asian woman inside a separate structure on the property. police have now identified her as 61 year old cindy win. she was kidnapped by this man that has ties to the house here. >> it's crazy in the neighborhood. >> wins friends got word that a body had been found in this house. coworkers are crushed. >> there is very terrible for us. cindy is a special person.

she is almost super being. >> they launched a city wide manhunt for him. swat officers searched an apartment complex but couldn't find him. his crime spree started yesterday with a robbery and shooting at a gas station. hours later he kidnapped win from the shopping center. >> we do not experience these types of crimes in san jose very often and we go all out. >> if you spot him don't go near him. call 911. they believe he's somewhere in this area although they think he's on foot. no car but he is armed and police say he's targeting people at random. ktvuchannel 22 news. >> police identified two men in an officer shot shooting in la. they returned to a stolen

mustang police spotted parked on barring on the baring ton court. they shot him. he was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back. the other was arrested without incident. >> san francisco is where two innocent by bystanders are recooping after being shot by tray bullets. it happened as two officers were patrolling broadway. they spotted a man making a drug deal. the officer spoke to that man briefly before he took off and the officers followed. >> as they were chasing him, the suspect reached into his waistband and turned around and pointed a semiautomatic hand pistol at them and the officers fired. the suspect was not hit by the a man and woman on the

street were both shot in the leg. their injuries are nonthreatening. the suspect is currently in jail for assault charges and weapons violations. >> hundreds of people joined together today in oakland making their voices heard for peace in their community. rallies began today. it included church groups and community organizations. marchers especially want to reach out to young people. >> if we show our young people that we can change and are trying to change something that it will eventually happen then everyone will start to effect change in the community. >> they gathered in front of oakland city hall to hear from elected official and talk about efforts to fight crime and violence. >> iran's foreign minister said

judicial officials are ready to commute the series of two grads held in prison. they were in court trying to arrange the $1 million bail. the foreign minister did not give specifics instead saying it would be in the near future. they have arranged to have a plane ready to fly them out of iran once they are released. people have been ordered to boil their water. the public works department says a man accidentally connected his well to a city pipeline. it covers 8 plots bordering virginia avenue. residents are advised to boil their tap water through the weekend for at least 3 minutes. >> volunteers met today at san francisco golden gate park to both remember the past and look to the future. people gathered at the national aids memorial grove

california republican delegates gathered voting in a straw poll for the person they think should challenge president obama. as we report, it wasn't one of the big named front runners that came out on top. it was by far the loudest and biggest rally yet at the republican convention in los angeles and it was all in support of ron paul. >> i'm running on peace and prosperity and personal liberty, the u.s. constitution and american tradition. thank you very much. >> paul was cheered over breakfast but his support in california is weak even behind sarah palin who isn't officially running, but the

supporters are interested in is the straw poll. anyone registered can cast their ballot for their favorite for the nomination. based on the early morning line alone you would think paul was a shew in. they may try to win bragging rights for a day. >> they're all about heart. we're going to see who is striking a chord with people and it will tell people they have activists behind them. >> michelle bauchman was the only other well he known republican candidate at the convention. she won the iowa straw poll as a potential boost but short lived as her campaign failed to gain momentum. they were hoping for at least one victory today. ron paul came out way ahead

an additional $21 per $100,000 of their homes values on your property taxes. >> nancy is pushing for more recovery money to help states hit by irene. she toured the damage along the beach of new haven, connecticut. it was submerged when irene hit in late august. the senate approved almost $7 billion in aid for storm victims but the measure is unlikely to pass the republican lead house which wants to see cuts in another part of the budge first. >> halloween may not see many jack o lanterns this year. entire crops were washed away. it was already a difficult year because they had to plant late and risk missing out on the season. after october 31st, pumpkin sales plummet. >> thousands of workers went

a judge granted a request for joseph maso so act has his own attorney. he is charged with killing four women between 1997 and 1994. the judge previously appointed a public defender to help him with the case. he pleaded not guilty. a preliminary hearing is set for january. nevada police released the teenager who was found driving with a grenade launcher. he was arrested tuesday during

people across california and bay area took to shorelines to help clean up the mess others leave behind. not all of the work for the coastal clean up was done on bay area beaches. >> don't let the concrete overpass and the power lines fool you. within this urban setting is a complex ecosystem. believe it or not we have both salmon and shrimp species in the river. this is the spawning river for them. and it's one of the reason why volunteers want to keep it clean. the salmon were here long before we were and now we're getting them back. >> she was one of more than 100 people that came to clean up the river. >> i found the rim of a tire, soccer ball, cd, anything from tires to beds to bottled cans

and cigarette butts are the worse. >> volunteers were at sites like this for coastal clean up day. in some cases it happens miles away from the coast. here in san jose, all the litter that ends up in this water will ultimately end up in the bay,. >> but as it travels it acumulates and acumulates. efforts to clean up the area in recent years have paid off. >> we have herring and mallard ducks and, you know, canada geese here that we haven't seen in years and that's the true sign of an ecosystem improving. >> all the more reason, she says, to keep it clean. california's new gold rush is calling fresh concerns about the environment. companies in the sierra foothills are reopening claims to mine for gold.

to the east bay for art, fun, and wine today. ♪[music] the annual art wine and specialty street party was held this afternoon in downtown hayward. they enjoyed live performances, wine and beer gardens and even a car show. today's event is the last of the downtown street fairs for the year. >> tomorrow night television honors it's own with the 63rd annual emmy awards. last night it was time for nominees to gather, test the red carpet and see the backstage area where they hope to hold the statue. hbo is leading the network race with 104 nominations. you can see the emmies right here tomorrow evening starting at 5:00 p.m. jane lynch of glee will host the show. >> four people are under arrest accused of breaking into a boxer's los angeles home.

and that trend will continue into the second half of the weekend. i can show you this on live storm tracker, mostly clear skies across a good portion of the coastline. the reason why we have clear skies, we have more of a northerlily wind. one of our sensors out to the west. we have winds out of the north northwest. this was the scene looking out toward the bay. you see the clear skies. a few high clouds out there. with the clear skies temperatures will be dropping off overnight and the lowes coming up in a little bit. patchy fog late. we'll continue to warm things up. the extended warming up for monday and tuesday and cool things off wednesday. look at some of the chilly overnight lowes. 40s showing up in napa, and we could have a few patches of fog
