seven days a week. investigators will continue their work to see if a body discovered here yesterday belongs to a missing nursing student. and they waited more than two years but a bit longer. the new developments in the case of the uc berkeley grads jailed in iran. the focus of a federal investigation that could provide some answers about the deadly air crash at the reno air basin. complete news coverage starts now, this is ktvu mornings on 2. welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday, september 18th. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm john sasaki in for mike mibach. if you are hoping for warm, sunny days before we head into fall, you're going to get your wish. >> now that the sun is up it is probably pouring inside your window, wall to wall sunshine this morning, fog off the coast and liable to see a heatup expected for the afternoon anywhere from five to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. so for some of us that actually -- it actually will become a

bit hot in the afternoon, again, waking up with mostly clear skies, calm out there and temperatures within a few degrees of where we started yesterday, some of us warmer, some of us cooler. we will take a look at what you can expect outside your door this morning and in the afternoon coming up. efforts underway to identify the body found during a search for missing nursing student michellele. volunteers found the body yesterday. ktvu's allie rasmus is there live now with more on what investigators will be doing today. >> reporter: to give you an idea of exactly where we are, just to our west is interstate 6 -- excuse me, to our east is 680. you can hear the freeway and the cars on the other side of that wall behind those trees over there. now, off to our east -- excuse me, our west over this pedestrian foot bridge is foothill road and here behind us about a quarter up this dirt path is where this body was found yesterday. now, this is as far as we can go. you can see from the police tape out here, that this whole area behind us is now part of a

crime scene as police try to determine whether the body found in this area belongs to missing nursing student michelle le. alameda county sheriff's sergeant j.d. nelson is here to tell us more about what investigators are going to be doing this morning. we hear there were about a half a dozen police out there overnight securing the area because it is a crime scene. >> we kept members of the alameda and other police officers to hold the scene because today at 10:00 we are going to have more searchers come in and search the area adjacent to where this body was found. >> reporter: the coroner came last night, the body has been removed. what do they still need to look for today? >> now that we have a body that was found and the brushes, i would consider to be medium to high in some areas so we have to get people to go into that brush and check to see if there's any other items that are left behind by anybody that may have had something to do with this. >> reporter: more evidence, is

there a possibility they are maybe looking for a murder weapon or something of that sort? >> you never know. whenever you're searching, anything is possible. so you -- but you have to eliminate all those probabilities so you do have to do a complete and thorough search as we go forward. >> we do have aerial video to show you of this search yesterday and the remote area that investigators were looking through yesterday. can you describe what it's like, what the conditions are like? is it easy for people to access on foot or by car? >> yeah, it's an area you showed it earlier in your broadcast, it's a dirt road, it is accessible by vehicle. we took our vehicles down there last night and yesterday, but it's lightly traveled. it does not get a lot of pedestrian traffic or bicycle or horseback traffic but it certainly is a trail that's used. >> reporter: michelle le went missing on may 27th and the weeks aftercards her -- afterwards her family was diligent about having search parties.

it was a volunteer searcher that found these remains yesterday. what can you tell us about this person that made this grim discovery? >> from our perspective, we got this report from the hayward police department so i was not involved with the portion that led up to that, so hayward would be a person month ask about that -- person to ask about that. right now it's a joint investigation. obviously, there's some speculation of who the body may be but that may not be the case so we have to go with a dual investigation to make sure that all the bases are covered. >> thank you very much, alameda county sheriff sergeant j.d. nelson with the alameda sheriffs department. it was over a week ago that hayward police arrested 27-year- old gizelle esteban for the murder of michelle le. she has not entered a formal plea to those charges but as you heard out here, the

investigation continues. alameda county sheriffs and hayward police will be out here in this remote in the sunol hills trying to collect more evidence and again working to determine whether the body found here yesterday may belong to missing nursing student michelle le. live in pleasnaton, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. new developments this morning for the jailed uc berkeley graduates in iran. they may remain locked up for a couple more days because a josh is on vacation. the attorney says he still may need a second paperwork from a judge but the judge doesn't return until tuesday. they have been in an iranian jail for more than two years, they are accused of crossing into the country illegally and spying. the death toll from friday's crash at the reno air races is nine this morning as the ntsb continues to investigate the cause. there's video from yesterday shows the aftermath of the crash. you can see tables and chairs that litter the vip section where the p51 mustang crashed into the ground.

the debris field covers more than an acre. today the ntsb will begin collecting fragments of that plane. >> there's a lot of fragmentation. there is no expectation we would ever be able to put all those pieces together so whether it disintegrated at the accident or taken away, there's no expectation we would be able to get those anyway. >> a portion of the plane's tail has been recovered. investigators are focusing on that part because some photos and video show something coming off the tail before it crashed. we know now that 69 others were injured. hundreds of people waited for hours yesterday to donate blood to help the victims of the disaster. three different blood centers in reno organized that drive. the donations will go to the dozens who were injured, some of them critically. the crash forced the cancellation of the reno air show this weekend and a scheduled appearance by retired astronaut mark kelly. kelly was scheduled to fly

acrobatics yesterday in a f51 mustang, the same type of plane involved in friday's crash. a spokesman for giffords says kelly was in reno the day of the accident but is now back in houston. another air show disaster this weekend, this time in west virginia. now you can clearly see the t28 war bird plunging from the sky in martinsburg before as you can see it hit the ground and that ball of fire erupted. the pilot died in that crash. >> no one on the ground was injured as a result of this incident and no other aircraft were involved in the accident. the crash site was a distance away from spectators. >> take a look at these photos because they give us a closer look at the moments before the crash. that t28 war bird was part of a six plane formation for a demonstration team. two of the planes were flying belly to belly before splitting off and that is when one of those planes crashed. in overnight news the chp is investigating a motorcycle crash that killed one person

and injured another in contra costa county. it happened at 11:45 last night near pinole. it appears the motorcycle crashed into a parked car. one person taken to the hospital. we don't know their condition. that crash is under investigation. police are searching for the gunman who shot and injured a man outside a gas station. it happened around 11:00 last night at macarthur and seminary across the street from mills college. crime scene tape surrounded the valero station shortly after the shooting. the victim had to be taken to the hospital. their condition isn't known this morning. a man hunt continues in southeast for a man -- san jose for a man wanted in a carjacking. paul castillo is suspected in a slew of crimes. her coworkers at the real estate office where she worked say they are crushed by the news. >> this is a very terrible news

for us. cindy is a special person. she is also a superbeing. she has very positive energy. she is the person that attracts a lot of people. >> police say castillo's crime spree started on friday when he tried to rob a man at a gas station and shot him. that victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. hours later he kidnapped nguyen from the plant shopping center. >> when you have this type of crime, we do not experience these types of crime in san jose very often and when we do, we absolutely will go all out. >> police believe castillo targeted the victims at random and anyone with any information on castillo is asked to call police. time now 7:09. president obama is expected to lay out a new tax plan tomorrow and it's influenced by warren buffett. administration officials say the tax plan calls on americans making more than $1 million a year to pay the same percentage

of taxes as the middle class. something buffett says should happen. but republicans are expected to oppose that plan saying it will discourage investment in the economy. good morning to you. rise and shine. isn't that a gorgeous start to the day, beautiful sunrise over the bay this morning and you are more than likely waking up with plenty of sunshine as well. temperatures up a few degrees in most cases where we were cloudy yesterday and clear this morning, we are actually a little cooler. giving you a look at what's going on outside across the bay, that fog is gone and we will not see it tomorrow morning or the next few days. we have a warming trend underway and our temperatures are expected to build into the low 90s even above normal for this time of year as we slip a little bit closer to fall. take a look at the wind, very calm out there this morning and a variable wind at that, we've got winds west north, westerly breeze in san francisco and light in oakland as well,

southeasterly in concord. calm conditions in livermore, san jose reporting calm conditions as well. the temperatures this morning looking a little bit more like what we saw yesterday, with just a few degrees warming in some cases, 56 in oakland as well as hayward, 50 in san rafael. if you remember yesterday morning, 10 degrees difference here between napa and santa rosa, napa yesterday cloudy, this morning cool and clear skies. oakland as well, a few degrees cooler than yesterday because we are waking up with clear skies. satellite and radar here, the 24 hour loop showing you a little bit of a ridge building there. i don't know if you can detect it but it is there in the northwesterly flow keeping the fog away. so notable warmup expected for today, anywhere from five to 10 degrees and the warming trend is going to continue. we were sitting in the mid-80s in some cases for the inland areas yesterday, for today we will be sitting in the low 90s and we will be near mid-90s by your monday afternoon. forecasted highs expected for today, widespread 80s in and

[ male announcer ] get to a better state. state farm. good morning to you. plenty of sunshine over the bay area this morning. temperatures rising to near, even a little bit above normal for the afternoon. new this morning, sweden's security police say they raided a mosque in the country's second largest city. the raid happened on thursday. it was prompted by the prosecutor in the case of three men arrested on suspicious of plotting a terrorist attack.

it's not clear if the rated is connected -- raid is connected to those arrests. the men were arrested the day before the 10th anniversary of september 11th. two nato service members have been killed in two separate attacks in afghanistan. nato says one of the troops died in an insurgent attack yesterday. the second was killed by a bomb today. their nationalities have not been released. 23 international troops have been killed in afghanistan just this month. the military is about to officially lift its ban on openly gay troops. the end of "don't ask, don't tell" will come on tuesday. been in effect since 1993. congress voted to repeal the law last year and president obama formally certified the repeal in july but the official end is a bit of a formality. all investigations and discharge proceedings under "don't ask, don't tell" ended several months ago. 7:16. a tuning tiff soldier -- fugitive soldier who had evaded police for two weeks is under arrest this morning. he surrendered to police in a wooded area in new york

yesterday afternoon after a car crash. marcum was first arrested after burglary charges but after assaulting a soldier who was escorting him back to fort drum he escaped in his papers' car -- parents' car. it happened yesterday on a street corner in orange county. 23-year-old robert treedo was riding his bike to the wilson reserve center when two men confronted him. his father says he couldn't recognize his son when he came home from the hospital. >> eyes closed, broken nose, separated septum which the navy said they are going to need to do reconstruction on. >> orange county deputies and the naval criminal investigative service are looking into that beating. in our election 2012 coverage, the california g.o.p. convention ends today in los angeles after a huge show of support this weekend for one of the presidential candidates.

backers of texas congressman ron paul cheered loudly and waved signs outside the convention. inside paul spoke to delegates over breakfast and the economy. >> there's no reason in the world that we couldn't expect a great improvement in what we have today if we just send people to washington that know and believe and will live up to their oath of office and obey the constitution. >> after paul spoke, delegates spent all day voting in a presidential straw poll and here are the results. ron paul came out way ahead with about 45% of the 833 votes. trailing far behind in second is texas governor rick perry with 29%. former massachusetts governor mit mom -- mitt romney with 9%. the california g.o.p. also held a town hall style event aimed at minority outreach. they are trying to appeal to the latino community. the chairman says -- he tells

the sacramento bee republicans have not been speaking to the majority of california voters for way too long. texas governor and presidential candidate rick perry stayed close to home this weekend. he delivered the keynote address in houston at an event to raise money for soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. >> these are our precious sons and daughters. they are our flesh and blood. we must take care of them, every last one of them. >> that was perry last night at the gala for the lone survivor foundation. the organization is trying to build a therapeutic way to support soldiers and their families. hundreds of protesters filled manhattan's financial district in a demonstration against wall street. now, police barricaded wall street itself yesterday but did not stop protesters from occupying other parts of that area. demonstrators demanded change at the site they called ground zero for corporate greed.

>> children in the united states suffer from hunger at the same time we are giving billions and almost a trillion to wall street for bailouts. something needs to change. we need an economy for the people and by the people. >> the protest is supposed to continue as a long sit-in along the lines of the vietnam era or the recent air spraying demonstrations, it was peaceful although a few people were arrested for trespassing. dominique strauss-kahn will sit down for his first tv interview tonight since prosecutors dropped charges in the attempt to rape a new york city maid. the former international monetary fund is speaking with france's tf1 channel. he'll be questioned by a friend of his life. lawyers for the maid says strauss-kahn should face pointed questions during the interview otherwise they say it's nothing more than a publicity stunt. hugo chavez is set to return to cuba for a fourth round of chemotherapy. chaviz says he -- chavez says he hopes to finish cancer treatments this year. he underwent surgery in cuba

a southern california father and daughter are in the hospital this morning after police say they were burned while trying to steal electricity. it happened friday in inglewood. police went to a power pole to find the father and daughter on the ground with burns to their body. it's believed the two were shocked by the transformer at the top of the pole. southern california edison is now investigating that incident. drugs are now the number 1 cause of preventable deaths in the u.s. according to a new

report. the "l.a. times" is reporting that drug deaths now outnumber traffic deaths. many of the deaths are related to prescription pain and anxiety medications which now cause more deaths than cocaine and heroin combined. in 2009 drugs caused the deaths of more than 37,000 people, which works out to one person killed every 14 minutes. police in utah are continuing their search today for missing mother susan powell. for the last three days authorities have been examining a shallow grave in the town of delta. cadaver dogs found the site but so far no remains have turned up. powell's husband josh is a person of interest in the case. he denies having anything to do with his wife's disappearance. susan powell has not been seen since december of 2009. a great grandmother of five is an unlikely hands-on crime fighter. she stopped a would be robber while working behind the counter of a restaurant. >> i said no, you get away, go while you can. >> that is barbara lane describing the reaction of the would be robber after she grabbed her butcher knife

thursday night at the new china restaurant in portland oregon. >> i had the knife in my hand and i smacked him across the wrist but i don't think it cut him. i didn't hit him that hard. >> the man finally left after lane hit him. this isn't the first time that great grandmother has chased off a would be robber. four years ago another man tried to use that restaurant. she used the same knife to scare him off. >> big knife. don't mess with great grandma, rosemary. >> maybe great grandma heading out to farmers market this morning. it's a nice morning. we've got sunshine out there. temperatures a few degrees warmer in most cases and for the afternoon several degrees warmer. we are looking at that sunshine for the next few days, nice to wake up with this, right around the bay we normally see gloomy, gloomy conditions, not the case today. so temperatures this morning again getting outside, not bad at all. the north bay seeing a few upper 40s so a little chill in the air there but most of us in the 50s, even some low 60s out there right around antioch. noontime numbers are going to

feel pretty good. mid-60s already in some cases along the coast. widespread 70s, even upper 70s inland, so nice day to maybe have lunch outdoors. how about 4:00 in the afternoon. it's going to be a warm one for some of us. widespread mid upper 60s expected for the coastline in the afternoon, even getting to about 75 degrees for parts of the city this afternoon, upper 70s, low 80s for the east bay, go inland and we are warm, lafayette if you're heading out to the art and winefest going to be a nice day there, sunny skies, upper 80s, even some low 90s for the far inland areas, areas like antioch as well as brentwood. the extended forecast here, we are going to continue with this trend monday, tuesday, we are looking at temperatures even hotter than today, so again for the inland areas it will become a little bit uncomfortable. the air quality is still good at this point along the coastline going to feel good, widespread low 70s for the afternoon there and then we will begin to drift a little bit wednesday, thursday, notice temperatures falling back below the 90 mark on thursday and as we get a little bit closer to fall, first day of fall being

volunteers searching for a missing nursing student find a body in alameda county and now investigators are trying to figure out if that body is in fact michelle le. good morning, welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm john sasaki in for mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. volunteers found that body yesterday morning just off interstate 680 and that is where ktvu's allie rasmus is live this morning with what's happening next in this investigation. allie. >> reporter: to give you a better idea of where this discovery was made, to the east of us right over here is interstate 680 where it's over that wall and we are actually close enough where we can hear the cars on the freeway where we are standing. to the west of us is a bridge, a pedestrian bridge and on the other side of it is foothill road and this seems to be a pretty well traveled area because this morning we have seen people on bikes jogging past us. behind us police tape, this dirt road, about 1/4 mile of

this dirt -- up this dirt road is where this body was found yesterday. investigators comb through the brushy trail where the remains were found and this morning half a dozen police cars still in that area making sure the crime scene remains secure. the alameda coroner removed the body yesterday night and because it is decomposed they cannot yet determine the sex of the body found there. but the sheriff's public information officer tells me by tomorrow the coroner should be able to answer that question to determine whether the remains found there belong to a man or woman. and later this morning a k-9 unit is supposed to come out here to continue the search of this crime scene. >> also looking for anything that may have been an instrument of the crime or anything that was left behind by the suspect. so it's an area that we have to search to make sure that there's nothing else here. >> reporter: michelle le has been missing since may 27th and in the weekends after her disappearance -- weeks after her disappearance her family organized several volunteer

search parties, at least eight of them and it was one of those volunteers who discovered these remains in the hills yesterday afternoon. michelle le was last seen at kaiser medical center in hayward where she was a nursing student. she left during a class and never returned. again, that was almost four months ago. now, just over a week ago hayward police arrested gizelle esteban for le's murder. she appeared in court to face those charges a week and a half ago although not yet entered a formal plea. esteban's next court date is scheduled for tomorrow. live in the pleasnaton sunol hills, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. today the ntsb will begin collecting fragments of the plane that crashed at the reno air races on friday. >> reporter casey siegel joins us live from reno and i know they are focusing on the plane's tail. can you tell us why? >> reporter: yeah, they certainly are. although this is still in the very early stages of the investigation, at an air race like this or an air show, obviously there are a lot of

aviation buffs here and a lot of pilots who know their planes inside and out and some of the pilots on the ground reported seeing a problem with the plane's elevator moments before this accident, an elevator is a flat surface on an airplane, a lot of times on the tail that moves up and down allowing the pilots to ascend and descend. the ntsb investigators have not confirmed whether they believe this possibly played a role in the accident. it will take some time to analyze all of the debris and make an official determination, although they have recovered and identified that particular part of the doomed aircraft. now, the faa said that all of the plane's maintenance records checked out prior to this weekend's show here in reno. at last check, 15 people remain in critical condition this morning. now, this event was supposed to run all weekend long,

everything has since been cancelled in the wake of this disaster. they have been holding the reno championship air races as you know for 40 plus years and while this is the first time any spectators have been harmed or killed, the event itself has quite a checkered history in terms of accidents out here. get this. through the years 20 different pilots have been killed in various accidents. some area schools now considering whether to end all field trips to this event. obviously, the future of the reno air race is now very much in question. though the event organizers say that they followed all of the safety precautions to the t and that the faa signed off on everything each year before the event can actually happen. so still a lot of unanswered questions as this community is still reeling from this horrible, horrible tragedy that happened on friday, claudine. >> casey, is there any word of

any possible way to change it to make it safer for the fans and for the pilots? >> reporter: well, john, that is something that they are certainly going to be looking at. obviously, this is a situation where planes don't typically fly over the crowd and in the previous years when these accidents have happened, the crashes have happened out on the runway or out on the tarmac but this is a situation where these planes were looping around the spectators and that is when this particular plane, a world war ii era airplane, lost control and then spiraled and nose dived right in front of the vip section. it didn't actually go into the grandstand. it actually was just feet away, but when it made impact, all of the debris was sent flying into the crowd, so certainly there is going to be a very close eye on how these events are held in the future, not just here in reno, about around the rest of the country for that matter in

the bay area as summer winds down, our temperatures are climbing. landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed at least nine people in western china. mud buried a brick and ceramic factory. rescue workers still digging for several people. the rescue has become difficult as heavy rains continue to pound that area. a construction worker in colorado is dead after a trench collapsed at a home where he was working. the man was trapped under 10 feet of dirt in the collapse on friday. took about 15 minutes for the man's coworkers to pull him out. he later died at the hospital. another coworker was partially buried in that collapse but not seriously hurt. the cause is under investigation. the digging of the fourth bore of the called -- caldicut tunnel -- crews from the fire direct and oakland headed into the tunnel, rescuers say they have to be ready for many

different hazards. >> take gas monitors with us to check for explosive gases, communications are difficult because radios don't work in the tunnel and we can't use radios in there because they are not safe. we have the problem of distance here, half a mile down to the base of the tunnel. >> the crews rescued a dummy victim and put out a simulated fire inside a piece of heavy equipment as their training scenario today. fire officials tell ktvu that in another month or so the digging is going to break through to the other side. that tunnel is scheduled to open to traffic in 2013. the california coast is looking a lot cleaner this morning thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. people across the state and around the bay area took to the shorelines yesterday as part of california's coastal cleanup day. in san jose more than 100 people picked up trash from the guadalupe river. some volunteers say they were surprised by what they saw. >> find anything from tires to beds to bottle cans and cigarette butts are the worst.

we will take a look at what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. volunteers looking for a missing nursing student michelle le made a discovery -- grim discovery. a body was found during the search near sunol canyon. investigators are on the scene searching for more clues, allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: the body was found a quarter mile up this dirt road behind us, but the area around t the roads that lead up -- it, the roads that lead up to this dirt path isn't that remote. off to our right is a pedestrian bridge, on the other side is foothill road and all morning we have seen people going by and jogging and on bikes. we can't take you up to the area where this body was found because it is part of the crime scene but news chopper 2 was overhead yesterday as investigators continued their search through the brushy trail where these remains were found. now, this morning there are about a half a dozen police cars still in that area making sure the crime scene there remains secure. the alameda county coroner removed the body that was found

there yesterday night and investigators say because that body was pretty badly decomposed, they can't determine whether it belongs to a man or woman, however, the alameda county sheriff's spokesman tells me this morning that by tomorrow they should be able to answer the question about whether the remains found here belong to a man or woman. a little later on this morning a k-9 unit is also supposed to be out here to continue their search for evidence. >> we have to search the area for possible things that are -- were attached to the body and then you're also looking for anything that may have been an instrument of the crime or anything that was left behind by the suspect. so it's an area that we have to search to make sure that there's nothing else here. >> reporter: michelle le has been missing since may 27th and in the weeks after her disappearance, her family organized several volunteer search parties in the hills around niles canyon and sunol and in pleasnaton and it was in one -- it was one of those volunteers who discovered this body in the hills here

yesterday afternoon. michelle le was last seen at kaiser medical center in hayward, almost four months ago. she was a nursing student there. she left during a class and never returned. but again, a little later on this morning a k-9 unit with the alameda county sheriff's department is going to be out here. they are going to be looking for more evidence and more clues in the area where this body was found. live in alameda county, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 11 days ago gizelle esteban was arrested and charged with le's death, expected back in court tomorrow morning where she may be assigned a public defender and could enter a plea. esteban is a former high school friend of le's. esteban blamed le for ruining her relationship with her boyfriend. new developments this morning for the 1kwr5eu8d uc -- jailed uc berkeley graduates in iran. they may remain locked up for a couple more days because the judge on vacation. the attorney for shane bauer and josh fattal said yesterday he still needs a signature from a second judge to approve the paperwork but the judge did not return from vacation until

tuesday. bauer and at thatfallal tall -- fattal have been in an iranian jail for more than two years. the death toll from friday's crash at the reno air races is nine this morning as the ntsb continues to investigate the cause. this video from yesterday shows the aftermath of that crash. you can see tables and chairs have littered the vip section where the p51 mustang crashed into the ground. the debris field covers more than an acre. today the ntsb will be collecting fragments of that plane. >> there's a lot of fragmentation, there is no expectation that we would ever be able to put all those pieces together and so whether it disintegrated at the accident or took away, there's no expectation we would be able to get all of those anyway. >> they add that a portion of the plane's tail has been recovered. investigators are focusing on that part because some photos and video show something coming off the tail before it crashed. besides the nine killed we now know 69 others were injured. the crash forced the cancellation of the reno air show this weekend and its

scheduled appearance by mark kelly. kelly was scheduled to fly acrobatics yesterday in a p51 mustang, the same type of plane involved in friday's crash and he is the husband of injured arizona congressman gab gives -- gabrielle giffords. he is now back in houston. another air show disaster this weekend this time in west virginia. you can clearly see the t28 warbird plunging into the sky before it hits that ground and that ball of fire erupted. the pilot did die in that crash. >> no one on the ground was injured as a result of this incident and no other aircraft were involved in the accident. the crash site was a distance away from spectators. >> now, take a look at these pictures as they give us a closer look at the moments before the crash. that t28 warbird was part of a six plane formation for a demonstration team and two of the planes were flying belly to belly before they split off and that is when one of those planes crashed. in overnight news the chp

is investigating a motorcycle crash that killed one person and injured another in contra costa county happened around 11:45 last night on tara hills drive and mcgee after near pinole. it appears the motorcycle crashed into a parked car. one person taken to the hospital. we don't know their condition. the crash is under investigation. oakland police are searching for the gunman who shot and injured a man outside a gas station. it happened around 11:00 last night at macarthur and seminary across the street from mills college. crime tape surrounded that valero station shortly after the shooting. police tell us the victim had to be taken to highland hospital. condition not known this morning. also in oakland, one person died yesterday after being shot and run over by a car. police say officers found two victims on foothill boulevard near 57th avenue just after 5:00 last night. the victims who had been shot and run over was pro 19 centsed dead -- pronounced dead at the scene. the other person who had gunshot wounds at the hospital now in critical condition. no arrests made. hundreds of people came together in oakland this weekend to send a message of

another mountain lion sighting in southern san mateo county, the third in a week. the cougar was spotted friday night in la honda. the sighting follows two others on monday and wednesday in portola valley. experts say people have avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk or at night when mountain lions are most active. a san mateo county farm being sued and accused of unsafe living conditions. the lawsuit says the owner of marcy central farm in pescadero overcharged tenants rent for years. the suit also says the tenants who were mostly farm workers lived in filthy living conditions. last year the county red tagged all of marcy's housing units due to nitrate pollution in their drinking water. well, there may be something missing from halloween in the northeast this year. heavy rain caused a -- hurricane irene caused a severe shortage of pumpkins in that reason. it was already a difficult year for pumpkin farmers because they had to plant late and risk missing out on the halloween season. after october 31st pumpkin sales usually plummet.

volunteers looking for a missing nursing student michelle le discover a body near the sunol canyon. the alameda county medical examiner is now working to identify those remains. >> and investigators will be back on scene this morning in the area just off interstate 680. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in alameda county with what investigators are searching for. allie. >> reporter: about an hour from now we should start seeing several k-9 units with the alameda county sheriff's department arriving here. they are going to be heading up

this dirt road here behind us because about 1/4 mile up this road is where this body was found in the sunol pleasnaton hills yesterday. the area where the body was found is pretty heavily wooded, brushy, but we want to show you the roads that lead up to it aren't that remote. this is a pedestrian bridge and on the other side of it is foothill road and we have seen a lot of people coming over on their bikes and jogging here this morning so seems to be pretty well traveled. we can't walk up this dirt path behind us because it leads to the crime scene and it is roped off as investigators continue their search but news chopper 2 was overhead yesterday as investigators went through the brushy trail where these remains were found. overnight about a half a dozen police cars were in this area making sure the crime scene remains security and last night the alameda county coroner removed the body that was found here. investigators say because it was badly decomposed, they could not determine the sex of the body found but the alameda county sheriff's spokesman tells me by this morning that tomorrow the coroner should be

able to answer that question, whether the remains found here belong to a man or woman. about a half an hour from now, k-9 units will be coming out here to continue their search for evidence. >> we have to search the area for possible things that are -- were attached to the body and then you're also looking for anything that may have been an instrument of the crime or anything that was left behind by the suspect. so it's an area that we have to search to make sure that there's nothing else here. >> michelle le has been missing since may 27th and in the weeks after her disappearance, her family organized several volunteer search parties at least seven of them in the hills around niles canyon and sunol and it was one of those search volunteers who discovered these remains in the hills here yesterday afternoon. michelle le was last seen at kaiser medical center in hayward where she was a nursing student. she left during a class and never returned. now, a week and a half ago hayward police made an arrest in this case and we will have more on the person arrested here in just a minute but for now i can tell you that k-9 search teams are supposed to be

happened on friday. they have a huge debris field to sift through. in fact, we understand debris scattered about an acre throughout about an acre. you can see from this video the cameras were allowed inside the accident scene yesterday. it looks as if a bomb went off. there is a crater in the tarmac about 3 feet deep and about 8 feet wide. now, the ntsb says that this particular plane had been modified to make it fly faster and to make it more aerodynamic. in fact, on youtube the 74-year- old pilot said that his crew had cut 5 feet off of each wing and also shortened the back edge of the tail from 60 some odd inches to 30 some odd inches. now of course the feds are looking into whether this compromised the airplane's safety and whether or not this played a factor in causing this plane to go up in the air and then spiral and nosedive landing feet in front of this
