forensic dentist was brought in to determine whether they are the remains of michelle le. >> reporter: a team of searchers found skeletal remains sunday in alameda county. we are told pathologist are conducting dna tests. >> couldn't see any clothing but that doesn't mean there isn't clothing underneath the body, which is why we take the body as one whole unit and take care to take the dirt around it as well. those fibbers and remnants get tangled up. >> reporter: michelle le, the nursing student disappeared in may. cell phone records indicate she was in the area where the remains were discovered. this morning the woman accused of murdering michelle le appeared in court. giselle esteban did not enter a

plea today, that was postponed till she is assigned a attorney. the attorney today said this. >> she is coping. the legal analyst says it's important giselle esteban get a lawyer quickly. >> she had no one advocating for her or her position in the case. establishing what her mental health is now or at the time of the incident, all of that is critical so we can have a viable defense. >> reporter: in an interesting twist, the mother of amber due buwaw who found the skeletal remains that may be of michelle le. she came up to the east bay over the weekend to help in the search and help find the remains. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news.

san francisco police made an arrest in a string of taxi cab robberies. at least four drivers have been robbed since mid-august. investigators say the suspected with ask to be taken to a certain intersection and he would threatthen driver and demand money. the name of the suspect hasn't been released. police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a girl this morning. officers say the man grabbed the girl and tried to pull her away. the victim was able to escape to a nearby school. the kidnapper is a black man in his 20s or 30s with a medium build and shoulder length dread logs and two stud piercings on the right side of his neck. if you have any information about the crime call south san

francisco police. detectives in san francisco are trying to figure out what led to a deadly shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead. two boys were shot last night. the second victim is hospitalized but is expected to survive. the gung fire game from a blue four door honda civic or accord. they don't know if it's gang related but it happened blocks away from a gang shooting last winter that left three dead. tonight at 5:30, we will have details on a gang prevention summit today. today we learned the owners of the cosco busan will pay a huge fine from the oil spill in the bayh in 2007. ktvu's david stevenson tells us the money will be put to use right here in the bay area. >> reporter: the spill happened

against that towler four years go. today it made history with a settlement. the november 2007 cosco busan crash and spill sent 53,000 gallons of oil into the bay, killing 6800 birds and oiling 100 miles of shoreline. >> this bay is a jewel of san francisco and the cosco busan oil spill left a scar across our water. >> reporter: today officials announced the ship's owners and operators will pay $45.5 million in penalties. >> these settlement funds will be used to conduct restoration projects, clean ships, and restore fisheries and reimburse for the injuries. >> reporter: san francisco will get 3.6 million with 7 million for fishing programs for

that fire is burning up hill. we see water drops now. that's good news. it is hot out there. dry. but there is no wind. that's good news. i will be back in a little wit with weather and we will look that fire and stay on it. >> thank you. we have new information tonight on a flight to oakland that passengers say was nerve- wracking. they knew something was wrong when the plane landed and surrounded by fire trucks. it was from seattle to oakland when it was forced to make a emergency landing because of a note found at sfo. that note was very specific. >> reporter: an alaska airlines flight made an emergency landing this morning. >> nerve-wracking for a while. they did their best to make everyone calm. >> reporter: passengers panicked. wondered what is going on as

law enforcement removed two men. >> they didn't tell us a lot. i saw the crew hugging each other. so felt like the threat was over then. the sheriff's department says an employee found a warning of a bomb on board mentions the seats where the two men you see had been sitting. >> two gentlemen had nothing to do with the notes but we didn't know that. they were questioned. no different when you pull a car over because it matches the description of a crime that occurred. >> reporter: the men were released. authorities screened 100 passengers and with the help of law enforcement they rechecked all the lungage and found nothing. some passengers were irked by the inconvenience but all the safety procedures were necessary and the note seemed credible. >> we handled it appropriately

based on the information provided in the note. >> should be looked into. >> it was cleared and back in the air today. the fbi has the note now in its possession and we are told they are following good leads tonight. investigators say the plane that crashed at a reno air show had video and data recorders on board. they hope that will help them figure out what caused the plane to crash. national transportation safety board looks at air races and shows. and it will be investigating what kind of plan was created for this particular show and race and determine whether or not it was met. >> three investigators that were on site at the air race. so they were immediately -- not onlies had h a chance to wins the accident but immediately on scene for the investigation. >> the death stole up to 10.

what is interesting. it's a very, very hot day out there. 90 degrees or so. our chief meteorologist bill martin was telling us. but there isn't a lot of wind. this fire can't changed that much. hasn't grown wildly or spread, although there hasn't been much of a fire season so far. while there may be fuel, this fire is not really expanding. a lot of smoke from the trees. drivers on interstate 580 can see that. there are about 4 departments there at the scene attacking the scene. cal fire, oakland fire, east bay regional parks and alameda. we will stay on top of the story. bring you updates on ktvu as soon as we get them. 2506 a gang summit in oakland. they are sharing ideas on how to fight gangs. one of the tools are the gang

morning in north beach. police say officers shot jesus paredes rodriguez after he pointed a gun at officers. the officers missed him and hit a man and a woman in their legs. they were treated and released from the hospital. parents, students and teachers in oakland are rallies against crowded classrooms. dozens gathered this morning, they say class size violates the terms of teachers contracts. the maximum class side for grades 1 through 3 is 30 but she has a class with 37 students. >> they can't be put into situations where it's unsafe, they can't learn, four classrooms are overthe maximum. >> ogres of the protest say they were told the school district doesn't have enough money to reduce classes.

president obama unveiled his deficit reduction plan. as jennifer davis reports the proposal triggered another round of budget debate on capitol hill. >> reporter: president obama challenges his republican critics, insisting half the savings need to come from higher taxes on the wealthy. >> it's math. the president is proposing $580 billion in cuts to medicare and 1.5 trillion in new taxes. he wants to let tax cuts expire for top earners and establish a millionaire rule. >> there is no justification for it. >> reporter: republican reaction was critical. >> i am going to get new revenue from putting americans

. some safeway customers are reporting sparse offering after a fire at the distribution center on friday. it shut down power to the entire facility. it supplies food to 265 stores in california, nevada and hawaii. a tire on the north end of lake chabot. we have been monitoring the fire for an hour. you can see the fire trucks there, there arologist air drops as well and 4 departments are working to fight the fire and appears they are making progress. it doesn't look like it spread much, if at all.

lawsuits could force plans for high-speed rail in california to slow down. a coalition of cities and groups has gone to court twice over environmental studies of the route. the rail authority did a new study after the first lawsuit but now a new lawsuit is challenging that revised study. it's been 10 years since the anthrax attack killed 10 people. major steps have been taking a boost defenses. experts say there are still
