with questions still surrounding the investigation. >> reporter: good morning. we're outside the coroner's bureau, where the next step is to determine mish shell le's death. now, her remains were found four mounts after she disappeared and a very long and exhaustive search. she disappeared on may 22nd. she was at kaiser hospital taking a nursing class. she left for a break and never returned. cell phone records show she was in the niles canyon area the day she vanished and that's where a group of volunteers were done -- conducting a search. saturday afternoon, one of the volunteers found the remains on 680 near pleasanton. the volunteer who found the remains is the mother of a murdered teenager. amber dubose was murdered after

disappearing in san francisco. she was leading a search team in her daughter's honor in the niles canyon area and we're told that amber's mother was the first to discover michelle le's remains in that area. now, again, the remains were positively identified as belonging to le. le's family released a statement, asking for private time to grieve, but they also are thanking everybody for their support and searches. they are working on a public vigil/memorial to remember michelle le. aimly rasmus, kut -- allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. police say a man was shot outside the valencia gardens housing protect. the shooting victim reportedly jumped into a car and drove away from the scene. police chased him until he crashed into another car at 20th and fulsom. he was then taken to sf general hospital.

we don't have an update on his condition. 7:03. the military's don't ask/don't tell policy is officially dismissed starting today. the 18-year ban on gays serving openly in the military was repealed at midnight last night. in san francisco today, a news conferenced a -- and -- conference and celebration is scheduled at the state building. gay and lesbian troops say this is an important moment. >> we're excited for the gay and lesbian service members who will no longer have to serve in silence. >> reporter: president obama signed the repeal in december of last year. but the pentagon held off officially ending the pollty until -- policy until new rules and training were in place. coming up at 7:45, pam cook will have right action from people in the bay area about the change to the policy. and president obama is in new york city today. coming up at 7:15, we'll have a

live report from our washington, d.c. a woman on board a flight bound for san francisco from the philippines gave birth to a baby boy. we're told nurses on board helped give birth and passengers cheered. once the plane landed, the ambulance took the mother and the baby to the mills medical center. both mother and baby are said to be doing just fine. the oakland city council will be hearing complaints tonight about what some say are excessive fines against property owners trying to fix up dilapidated homes. people say they purchased fixer- uppers and were quickly fined

for blight fines that prevented them from finishing. also a number of jobs given to one contractor who later reportedly inflated the cost of the work. 7:05. san francisco police are investigating a stabbing. the incident happened on kirkwood avenue near earl street in the bayview district early sunday. the woman told police she stabbed the intruder when he tried to choke her. according to "the san francisco examiner" the woman thought the man fled but she found him lying outside her door later and she called 911. the pleasant was -- the plan was pronounced dead on the scene. police are looking into whether she acted in self-defense. a man accuse of intentionally burning his son will be arraigned today. police say dante robertson will

be charged with child abuse and torture for allegedly bolding the -- holding the boy's hand in 150-degree water. they say the boy suffered deep burns. robertson claims he put his own hand in the water. two years ago, the child accused robertson of abusing the same boy but there was not enough evidence to charge him. 7:06. well, some san francisco parents say it's time to give their kids a free ride on muni. tara moriarty is live to give us the pros and cons of this idea. tara? >> reporter: well, one muni pass costs about $20 a month per child. if you add that up with three kids, that's $600 per school year. a lot of parents are saying that is too much money to get their kids to school each morning. now, they will be pushing for

legislation that would make this free. the plan would cost more than $7 million a year and provide free rides for 12,700 students in the city. some parents say they may be forced to move out of the city or their kids would have to walk several blocks to school. the proposal would create a three-year pilot program. this way muni and the san francisco unified school district could collect more information about student travel patterns. we did speak to some muni riders early this morning and we'll tell you what they found coming up. one person says he thinks it's a good idea, that it would cut down on smog. we're on geary avenue, where you can see a lot of traffic. not too bad, actually. it's a spare-the-air-day. let's check in with sal to see if people are using mass transit. >> good morning, tara. yes, people are using mass

transit. right now traffic is moving along nicely. it's crowded as you might expect from this time of the morning. we recovered from an earlier crash. things are moving, i would say, it's a decent commute being 7:08 and all. this traffic is moving nicely past the coliseum. this commute does not usually get busy for another hour or so. if you are driving on the nimitz, it's clearing up. watch for slow traffic on tennyson. also, slow traffic in contra costa county, antioch, pittsburg, and bay point but it's pretty normal at this time. let's go to steve. clear skies. fog down the monterey peninsula. so far, not much of a breeze at all. until that kicks in we'll have

this temperature. for some it's very mild. for some it's a little cooler. we're losing the northeast wind at the surface, but not aloft. temperatures around 2500, 3,000 feet are already 80 degrees. so there is a lot of warm air and it won't take long to warm up. there could be a lot of temperatures inland. it depends if it will be low, mid or upper. 51 sonoma county airport. mid-60s for some already. fairfield is 58. the only reason they are 58 is they have no breeze at all -- no breeze in cordelia. with that in place, it's just impossible not to warm up. we will rapidly -- that system approaching the pacific northwest should start to turn the wind and pick it up a little bit out of the sea breeze direction later on. but i think for the morning hours it will be still and maybe in the afternoon we'll

looming over palestinian statehood. palestinian leader mahedy abecause, is -- maimed abecause mahmoudd abbasss. 7:15, at least one person is dead and three others are missing following several earthquakes in guatemala. there were four quakes in less than two hours. many aftershocks. the biggest was a magnitude 5.8. many homes and buildings suffered damage and people are sifting through the rebel. and rescue -- rescue efforts in india continue two days after a 6.9 earthquake devastated the villages. at least 81 people are confirmed dead. several communities are still cut off by landslides triggered

by the quake. helicopters are dropping emergency supplies in hard-hit areas. 7:16 a new earthquake warning system is being tested right -- being tested right here in california. 30 scientists have been hand picked to get earthquake warnings through their computers. this project is spearheaded by the society. now, japan already has a public warning system and it actually helps save lives during that big quake and tsunami in march. four months have now passed since the may tornado that devastated joplin, missouri. now officials want to know what needs to be done to get ready for the big storm. noaa will release a report today detailing communication efforts moments before the tornado hit. the report takes a look at public warnings and forecast. that tornado killed 160 people.

hundreds more were hurt. 7:17. happening right now, a hearing on capitol hill about the effect of the government's mounting debt on the u.s. economy. are live pictures. republican members of the house and senate called for the hearing, but testimony from -- among them two prominents have warned that gross federal debt can slow economic growth and the creation of jobs. speaking of jobs, job speakers are invited to attend a career fare in south san francisco today. it runs from noon until 4:00 p.m. at the south san francisco conference center on airport boulevard. admission is pre. fed-ex, lawrence lab, afterlack are -- afflack will be there. the bay area's job market is expected to grow, especially

in the silicon valley. that's according to a senior analyst from the -- with the uc anderson system. the south bay added 20,500. the san francisco, and south marin added 12,500. west hollywood in southern california could become the first city in the nation to ban the sale of fir clothing. after a hot debate that lasted well into the morning, the city voted unanimously to support the ban. critics say banning the sale of fir will significantly hurt local businesses. the city council meets again in two weeks. they will work out details of the ban before taking a final vote. this year's grape harvest is expected to be smaller than normal. but wine lovers, you probably

in japan. researchers looked at more than 1,000 men and women over the age of 60. they found that people with diabetes were twice as likely to develop alzheimer's within 15 years. but researchers are still trying to figure out why. soon, you'll find smaller sizes of coca-cola. in the store, coke says its new 12.5-ounce bottles will sell for about 89 cents each. coke is catering to customers who don't want to spend a lot of money or are concerned about the number of calories in bigger about theles. a housing developer has agreed not to build on a 6,000- year-old native-american burial site in santa cruz. the developer was getting radio build on that site when several -- ready to build on that site when several remains were found. the other homes planned, they

more criticism this morning about solyndra. this time it involves financial help the failed solar giant got from the state. alex savage is in fremont to tell us the questions now being raised. >> reporter: good morning, tori. in addition to that federal loan that solyndra received from the federal government, solyndra also got a major tax break from the state of california. one state lawmaker wants an investigation. that tax incentive was part of an alternative energy subsidy law that was signed by former governor, arnold schwarzenegger, back in twine. he took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for solyndra. california's alternative energy and advance transportation funding authority gave the fremont company a 34.5 million tax break, the largest given

out in the state. now that the company has folded, the former governor is facing some crit sim. according to report -- criticism. according to the report, the state didn't look into solyndra's financial health and some are saying they should have done their research. >> i think clearly, this was not a good investment. probably should have scrutinized a little better before they chose to do that. >> if he's allowing the large tax breaks for deposits -- companies like this and this is what they are doing with tax payer money, it absolutely should be looked in to. >> reporter: earlier this month, solyndra filed for bankruptcy and then laid off 1,000 workers. alex padilla says he plans to hold hearings on the subsidies solyndra receives. but a spokesman for the former

governor says he believes granting tax breaks to solar companies is a good idea. solyndra also received $500 billion from the federal government. those are being investigated by the fbi. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. it is 7:31. the bail for the uc berkeley graduates jailed in iran has been paid but they are not coming home just yet. the lawyer for shane bauer and josh fattal appeared in court this morning. he was trying to get a judge's signature on paperwork to prove the bail has been paid. court officials said the lawyer, the judge is not back from vacation yet. and it's not clear when he will return. the two men have been in prison since july of 2009. they are charged with spying and crossing into iran a charge

they've adamantly denied. officials met last night on how to keep guns off the campus. students, teachers, parents are invited to share their ideas. this after a student was caught with a gun on campus earlier this month. it's reportedly happening more but often it's not reporting. officials suggest tighter discipline in general, one parent scugged using a hotline for students to report gun incidents. police in antioch investigating the mysterious death of an investigator. police say a man in his 60s was killed while walking on lone tree way last night. police are still questioning licenses -- witnesses to find out what happened. one woman walked right in the middle of the dark street. >> if you look over there, it's dark. he couldn't see him coming. he just got hit.

>> the driver immediately stopped and is cooperating with the police. authority -- officials say he's devastated. water is gonna be more expensive for palo alto homeowners starting next month. the city council approved a 21% rate increase. the average customer will pay about $18 more. the industry expects the costs for delivering water will double and this increase will help cover those costs. it could soon be easier for berkeley residents to opt out of getting phone books. right now, berkeley has a program allowing residents to signed up with a nonprofit agency to stop receiving unwanted mail. but residents have to go through through at&t's website to on the out of their -- opt out of their phone book. >> the cycling lobby in marin county is getting stronger.

the bicycle coalition will hire an offroad biking advocacy director. that director will work to open up more bike trails. that hiring is already raising red flags with the marin conservation league. they say they are afraid of an aggressive approach to open up new trails. we may find out which cities will host the amgen tour of california in 2012. however, the exact route won't be announced until april. race organizers will announce this -- they did announce this past may that the 2012 race will begin here in the bay area in santa rosa. 7:34. today's warm temperatures means high fire danger. this morning, crews are still watching out for hot spots for a fire from chabot park. it started late afternoon on the northeastern end of the lake and shut down a popular

in san jose, 11 people are homeless. firefighters rushed to a seven- unite victorian home at washington street in japan town around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. you can see from this viewer's picture, heavy smoke and flames were pouring from the attic -- attic. the home was built in 1892, she says, and that posed some problems. >> it's constructed in the way that the fire runs the walls like the chimney and it was in the attic into the basement. >> the red cross is helping the 11 people displated. investigators are try to determine what sparked the fire. what apple stock is doing after hitting an all-time yesterday. stocks are up this morning after closing down yesterday by triple digits, at least for the dow. investors dividing their attention between europe's precarious situation and a key federal reserve meeting. right now, the dow is currently up 89, at 11,490. nasdaq is up 4. s&p is up 10. last night, the standards and poor's cut italy's rating to a

from a-plus. the agency cited the company's growing debt and weak growth outlook. the federal reserve's latest meeting is underway. some economists say it could lead to new steps to stimulate the u.s. economy. ben bernanke is not expected to announce a third round of quantitative easing. but some say the fed could start buying intermediate term bonds and sell off the short- term bonds it's bought. that could give high pressures -- homeowners the hope about interest rates remaining low. there's one industry that's growing rapidly and that's the app. at least 100,000 jobs have been creepated. that's -- created. that doesn't include any apps

impact it has is for the family. it does provide the family with some level of closure and will help hopefully move them into getting beyond and moving on and then -- moving on in the grieving process. >> reporter: and a former high schooler friend of le's has been charged with the murder. does the location in the identification of michelle le's body theoretically possibly make the d.a.'s case stronger against her accused killer? >> well, again, being a lay person about what the d.a.'s office office has to do -- i can tell you this -- they no longer have to prove that a homicide occurred because we did find michelle. now there's questions that they have before them, who did it. >> reporter: too it them about four months to -- it took them about four months to find her. she disappeared on the 22nd of

officials are trying to figure out how to keep guns off campus. at a meeting last night, students, teachers were invited to share their idea. this meeting came after a student was found with a gun on campus, last month. officials suggested tighter discipline in general. one parent -- one parent suggested the use of a texting highlight for students to report gun incidents. investigators say a man in his 60s was killed while walking onto lone tree way around 9:30 last night. police are still questioning witnesses to determine what led up to the tragedy but one woman says the victim walked right in the middle of the dark street as a car approached. >> if you look across the street, it's dark. there's no lights there. he couldn't see it coming.
