the arrival of a baby is always an amazing event but not like this. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. talk about an unexpected arrival. a mother and her baby boy are now resting in a hospital after she gave birth on a plane bound for san francisco. new at noon, ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from burlingame with this mother's amazing story. >> reporter: it really is a remarkable story this mother will have to tell her son some day. she did not give birth at this hospital, but rather hundreds of miles to sea and thousands of feet in the air. at 6 pounds, 1 ounce, the birth was a surprise. >> i'm not expecting it at all. >> reporter: just ten days shy of her due date, ada was flying from the phillippines when just four hours outside of san

francisco, she realized something wasn't wrong. >> my tummy get pain. oh, my god, why is this happening, i told myself. >> reporter: she had her son and brother both traveling with her -- with her and she went into lane. she nurses happened to be on board. >> they said just hold on and relax and breath in and out. i don't push. in and out. the baby is there and -- the baby's crying. and then i look up. >> reporter: passengers let out a cheer when the captain made the announcement. the baby boy had arrived. francis, named after his native city, san francisco. >> and when you heard him cry first time -- >> all of -- all of the pain is gone. >> reporter: ada and her two

sons will push onto boston where she will join her husband and two other children flying in to the phillippines. she said she did have her doctor's permission to fly. she says her birth place will be listed as san francisco. back to you. >> thank you. you can hear a lot more from the mother. we've posted her entire interview at.com. there -- at ktvu.com. there are still a lot of unanswered questions even after the nursing body -- the nursing student's body was found. >> reporter: it took nearly four months but the search for michelle le is over. authorities confirmed the remains belonged to the missing student. >> the one piece missing was finding michelle and our

investigation wasn't gonna be over until that happened. >> reporter: michelle le left her nursing class at kaiser in hayward and was never found. her body was found on saturday. a volunteer made the grim discovery. there was a search by her family and that's in addition to the other seven searches going on. >> it was to some degree a needle in a haystack. that's why it took 15 different searches in order a lot of ravi there's steep dropoff. >> reporter: the 27-year-old woman in jail is charged. investigators say she blamed le for ruining her relationship with an ex-boyfriend. experts say say finding her body will make her case stronger. now the next step is for the

academy coroner -- alameda coroner to determine the cause of death. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. and michelle le's family released this statement -- >> the family also asked for privacy. david campos will formally introduce a plan today to give free rides on muni to school children. campos wants to provide the rides to 12,000 kids who are between the age of 15 -- other rather, between 5 and 17 years old. he says it will help struggling families who cannot afford to send their kids to school. one mother says she know as

parent who relies on the kindness of one particular bus driver. >> he says, come on in. she says, i don't have any money and he waves her on. so she knows that that bus driver is sympathetic enough to turn a blind eye. >> the plan would cost the city $7 million a year. it's not clear exactly where that money would come from. critics say it's just too expensive. bay area transportation buses and union -- bosses and union leaders are standing together in an effort to keep congress from cutting fun fund -- from cutting funding to transportation. transportation officials called for full funding after federal transportation bill. congress proposed to cut one- third of the funding. the federal transit and transit programs. b.a.r.t., muni and a.c. transit say service will be seriously impacted if the bill is not fully funded.

>> services will be going up, fares will go up, contract jobs will be loss and passengers will be less likely to get to their jobs. >> transit agencies around the bay area and the country will be holding rallies this weekend to express their support of the bill. more criticism today about solyndra, this time it involves financial help the famed giant got -- the failed giant got from the state. they were given a a tax break that was farther of a subsidy law signed by -- part of a subsidy lupined sigh then- governor, arnold schwarzenegger. critics say the state did not look into solyndra's financial health for giving it the tax break. >> that's money from all of these people driving down the freeway. that's their tax money. they are on their way to pay money for this company they

closed up. they are paying on their jobs, for what reason? none. it's a waste. >> state senator alex padilla says he plans to hold hearings on the tax incentive within the next two weeks. today marks an important milestone for the san bruno community devastated by last year's pipeline explosion. new at noon, alex savidge joins us live to explain what's happening today and why it's so important. alex? >> reporter: this was a very important ceremony for those people who live in that part of san bruno, as they work to repair the neighborhood. i want to show you the focus, the crater down by glenview and earl. this is the spot where neighbors and city leaders came together early on today to help fill in this huge hole left over from the blast. one by one people dumped shovels of dirt into the hole. it marks a major milestone in the recovery and rebuilding process.

for people who lived fire the deadly pipeline explosion, one year ago, this was an emotional step forward today. >> it was an obvious experience -- it was an awful experience. we were hoping this would be part of the healing process and close up the hole and look for a better life in the newture -- in the future. >> my neighbors couldn't be here so i did two scoops. i told the gomezs i would do their scoops for them. >> reporter: the pipeline at the bottom of the crater has been capped. it will never be used again. but the mayor of san bruno says even after this heel is filled there's still work on a political level to do a to make sure this doesn't happen -- to do to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> it's important to fill the hole. but i think the big story today is the holes that are not filled. they are the legislative holes

an unusual crash caused aen -- caused an unusual backup. the chp says two vehicles got into a collision in one car and ended he -- and ended up down the embankment. the chp says no one was injured

but the crash caughted two lanes, back up eastbound traffic fork miles. and normally at that time of the morning there is no backup in that direction. antioch police are investigating the mysterious death of a pedestrian. a man in his 60s was killed while walking on lone tree way around 9:30 last (the police say the driver, who was devastated about what happened, immediately stopped and is fully cooperating with the authorities. the it's military -- the u.s. military passed aen -- passed an healthcare -- the repeal of the don't ask/don't tell policy took effect at 12:01 this morning. it ended an 18-year policy that forced members of the military to lie about their sexual orientation. an active member of the air force who was instrumental in advising the pentagon on the policy offered his reaction just a few hours ago. >> no words can describe how it feels to stand up there and be able to say for the first time,

use the park. last night's council decision follows months of heated debate. supporters say minor league baseball would bring family- oriented fun to downtown san rafael. but opponents are worried about traffic, noise, alcohol use, security and other issues. west hollywood could become the first city in the nation to ban the sale of fur clothing. the city council clouted -- voted unanimously to support a ban after heated debates that lasted into the morning. critics say banning the sale of fur will significantly hurt local businesses. the city council will meet again in two weeks to work out details of the ban before taking a final vote. construction on the new b.a.r.t. connector to oakland airport is causing a road lane closure. a lane to airport drive between

stocks rising tau r, at least the day -- today, at least the day is, carnival corporation is up and also the feds. the dow is up 62, at 11,463. however, the nasdaq is in negative territory. oracle will be reporting hearnings after the closing bell -- earnings after the closing bell. some of today aupward momentum from the dow is due to the beginning of a two-day federal hearing. investors are expecting the board to adopt new moves to stimulate the economy. there's also hope that whatever the fed does it will keep long- term interest rates low which could trigger growth and also hiring. well, despite slowdowns in other place, the bay area's job market is expected to grow, especially in silicon valley. that's according to a senior

economist with the ucla anderson forecast. the south bay gained 20,500 jobs in the first eight months of this year. the san francisco, san mateo, marin area, added 12,300 jobs. the east bay added 4600. researchers say technology and exports are helping to lead the way. job seekers are invited to attend a career fair in south san francisco that just got started. it runs until 4:00 p.m. at the south san francisco conference center on airport boulevard. admission is free. fed-ex, lawrence berkeley lab, afflac, and sleeptrain are just some of the companies participating in the job fair. people can get help fine-tuning their resumes. soon you will see coca-cola bottles. the company says they will sell for 89 cents each and they are catering to customers who don't want to spend a lot of money or
