have been released. claudine wong joins us live from uc berkeley with all of the developments this morning and where the two men are expected to be headed. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. certainly we've been watching everything coming out of iran. we've been waiting for this confirmation that they've actually left the grounds of the prison because we've known since early this morning that there were a couple of cars with swiss diplomats there. they pulled up to the gates. they had not left yet. but they have now left. this all started overnight as word came from the attorney for these two men that all of the necessary signatures were in hand, then diplomatic vehicles were arriving at about 3:30 our time to the prison and then about 4:45 this morning. there was a -- about 4:45 this morning, there was word that the two men were freed after

spending two years in that prison. details are still coming in about about how this happened. >> i'm sure there are so many things that we don't know and we will never know about the story and what happened behind the scenes and all of the negotiations that took place. just really glad the effort of our government took place and a lot of support it took to get them oust. so what's next? this is sarah shourd. ant -- at this point, we have confirmation they are free. it appears they've left the prison in iran. people here on the uc berkeley campus obviously reacting very happy to the news about them

being free. more development the coming. we'll monitor these for you. back to you. >> thank you. san francisco police checking surveillance video as they search for the gunman who shot and wounded a 5-year-old girl. this happened late yesterday while the child was walking with her father. investigators say the little girl was shot in the left knee after being caught in the crossfire of gun battle. she's listed in stable condition. police say there were a lot of witnesses and they are urging those witnesses to come forward. >> we do believe there are people that have seen things and may know things. this is the time to come forward. it's really important to come forward. we cannot have kids being shot as they walk down the street.

police are looking for two shooters who shot at least four rounds. 7:04. the city of san jose faces a financial crisis. a report to the city council says they've have two options -- other raise taxes or slash numerous programs and services. kraig debro is live in san jose to explain why the budget outlook appears so grim. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a lot of people out here are hoping it's not both of those things, both raises taxes and cutting programs. the city manager has delivered suggestions about how to do this. last may she delivered a similar scenario. now what they are talking about is certainly a lot more drastic. so eliminating all library services. that's one suggestion. not opening four libraries that were scheduled to open until

next year. putting that off until next year and also increasing taxes. the mayor has put that forward earlier this year. there was a survey that came out that suggested that citizens in san jose says they are not ready for that. they want to put pension reform on the ballot and that's something that that same survey said they would get behind. there's also talk of cutting park ranger services. libraries is already cut. they are gonna possibly eliminate all library service. right now, libraries are only open 40 hours a week. the head librarian wants to cut that back. there will be a lot more discussion about this as the days and weeks move on. one of the other cuts they are talking about is eliminating crossing guards at school -- at

air day. it's the third straight day people are being urged to take pre -- precaution. let's check in with sal. it's busy out there. >> it is busy out there, dave and tori. good morning to you, once again. let's take a look at what we have now with the morning commute. when it comes to the south bay, you can see highway 17. traffic is doing pretty well. we're seeing more traffic on 101, as we move to the maps to freemont and hayward and union city, southbound traffic on the nimitz freeway is growing and there's an unexpected delay approaching castro valley. let's take a look at live pictures. i want to show you that the

westbound bay bridge incline looks pretty good. there is a small delay on the toll plaza. if you are driving on highway 4, we have slow traffic backed up to bay point. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. the fog has come back to the golden gate, golden gate fields, right over towards alcatraz. it's shallow. so the fog is back, although it's not going to have much impact inland, it will still be warm to hot. so cool to hot. if you are in that fog, it will be in the 50s or 60s. if you don't have any marine influence whatsoever. the bigger fog bank will greet us. we'll start a cooldown. maybe some high clouds from the south saturday and more so on sunday. yesterday, some of the highs, the leader of the pack, livermore, at 101. santa rosa had 98. redwood city said 96.

san jose, 94 and downtown san francisco, 86. the oakland airport was 93. coast and bay fog is there. it's very low. some of it could be very thick. there's hardly any breeze whatsoever. it's trying to turn westerly. everything is really calm. the system approaching the pacific northwest it should start to pick that breeze up. look at the -- look at the lows from 50, 51, there's already a 10-degree difference or -- or more. the highs are in here for a 5- degree difference. that system is getting closer. as it does, that will start to enhance. fog and then also lift it. that will be the key as we get the heat in the valley. once that heat gets bumped out, today looks cool by the coast. we'll from go -- we'll go from

60 to 100. a large spread inland. it will be in the 90s to near 100. closer to the bay, 70s and 80s. it's always the toughest forecast, how much the inland areas, not so much there but by the coast. 50s, 60s for some. and then 80s, low, mid- to upper or even some 90s. the extended outlook makes a more -- it will be cooler with a lot of clouds for the weekend. thank you. happening right now, president obama is getting set to address the united nations' general assembly. you are looking live at the podium. just a short time ago, we saw brazil's president delma russo -- delma russo. coming up at 7:45. we'll have analysis about the

president's address. this the u.n. official introducing the president. there is quite a lot of attention focused on this speech and this event happening at the united nations because of the situation with the middle east and the request by palestinian leaders for state hood. we can listen in right now to the president and hear what he has to say. >> ladies and gentlemen, it's a great honor for me to be here today. i would like to talk to you about a subject that is at the heart of the united nations. the pursuit of peace in an imperfect world. war and conflict have been with us since the beginning of civilization. but in the first part of the 20th century, the advance of modern weaponry led to death on a saggering scale.

with this killing -- it was this killing that compelled the founders of this body to focus on not just ending one war but averting others, southern earn states that would seek to end conflict while also addressing its causes. no american did more to pursue the objective than president franklin roosevelt. he knew that a victory in war was mott enough. as he said at one of the very first meetings on the founding of the united nations, we have got to make not merely piece but a piece that will last. the men and women who built this institution understood that peace is more than just the absence of war, a lasting peace for nations and for

individuals depends on a sense of justice and opportunity, of dignity, and freedom. it depends on -- depends on struggle and sacrifice, on compromise and on a sense of common humanity. one delegate to the san francisco conference that led to the creations of the united nations put it well. many people, she said, have talked as if all that has to be -- has to be done to get peace is to say loudly and frequently that we love peace and hate war. now we've learned no matter how much we love peace and wait har -- and hate war, we cannot avoid having war brought upon us if there are convulsions in other parts of the world.

the fact is peace is hard. but our people demand it over nearly seven decades, even as the united nations helped avert a third world war, we still live in a world scared by and plagued by uponnerty. even though we proclaim our love for piece and -- peace and our hey ted for war, there are still convulsions in our world that endanger us all. i took office at a time of two wars for the united states. moreover, the violent extremists who drew us into war in the first place, osama bin laden -- >> you have been watching president obama beginning his address to the united nations this morning in new york city. he is discusses -- discussing the pursuit of peace in an imperfect world talking about the two cars taking place when

time is coming up on 7:18. the u.s. senate is holding hearings on whether google is breaking anti-trust laws. reporter jamie dupre -- joins us via skype. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, the halls of the building will be open. you just look at the title of the hearing and that tells you what it's gonna be like "the power of google, serving consumers or threatening competition." it will be interest because they are gonna here from the top dog of google, eric schmidt and he will obviously deny that that he are breaking any anti- trust laws or doing anything wrong. we'll also hear from nextel, yelp and expedia saying that google is using their power to edge them out. it reminds me of the 1990

hearings that i covered with must with microsoft. we'll see what happens. back to you. >> thank you. 7:19. sparks from power lines probably set off what eventually became the most destructive wildfires in the history of texas. that's according to texas forest service documents obtained by "the associated press." just look at these pictures. the huge wildfire started three weeks ago, about 25 miles evest -- east of austin, they exploded in size, killed two people and destroyed 1500 homes. the fires are still burning this morning. still forcing large amounts of evacuations. new violence in mexico's drug car has tourists terrified. boca del rio is a port city. their, a gunman dropped 35

bodies at a shopping center. police are trying to keep everything calm by telling them those are all gang members, not civilians. mexico's death toll has climbed to 40,000 so far. there's word that casey anthony may move out of the country, once her probation is over next year. she was acquitted of killing her daughter in july but is currently on probation for lying to police. she's reportedly received dozens of angry letters about the case and, according to "people" magazine anthony plans to take language classes and may leave the country as soon as next year. 7:20. let's check in with sal. let's get you -- we'll get to sal later. it's the biggest upscale shopping center in contra costa county. why some shoppers are worried about possible changes. and is bigger -- and is bigger always better than college sports? the big decision that came down last night.

university presidents chancelers voted to hold off on further for now for expanding the conference. they just added colorado and utah. but they were entertaining the idea of bringing in texas and oklahoma. 7:223 -- 7:23. there are plans to expand the largest upscale shopping center in contra costa county. broadway plaza in walnut creek, wants to upgrade. according to executives of the company that owns the 60-year- old shopping center. they don't have a master plan

yet so they are not saying what amenities or new stores might be added although a new neiman marcus is set to open there next march. some shoppers we talked to said they have questions about changes to broadway plaza. >> if they are gonna expand an they are expecting more people to come here, they need more parking. >> i'm really not in favor of expanding. >> reporter: why not? >> i don't know. i just like it -- i just like it, you know, the way it is. >> some city leaders and small executives will sold several meetings where people can say how they feel about it. 7:24. now it's time -- it's time to check in with sal. >> we do have slow traffic out there. we're gonna start in san francisco along northbound 101 looks pretty good if you are driving to downtown on the bayshore freeway. it should be pretty good for

just about a half-hour ago, we got word confirming that shane bauer and josh fattal have left the prison. claudine wong will join us with an update at 8:00, including where the two men are expected to be headed. homicide detectives in richmond are looking for clues following a very gruesome discovery inside of a popular restaurant. tara moriarty is here to tell us what led up to this murder mystery. tara? >> reporter: well, richmond police should be giving us an update any minute. they did tell us that they believe this all started as a domestic dispute. we also just got off the phone with the coroner's office and they are still keeping the identity of this female victim under raps. this is whereby the owner of this restaurant found the

victim's body in the bathroom. it happened around 7:30 witnesses say they saw the woman alive inside the building off san pablo avenue. the business owner said he left her with customers while he ran errands and when he came back, the place was locked up and empty. he started to get ready for the evening. didn't see her but several hours later began searching and found her body in that bathroom. police responded to an argument between a man and a woman here in the evening. they saw nothing so they left. we also spoke to some nearby business owners. they were telling us that the owner of this restaurant is fairly knew only been here a -- new only been here a couple of weeks. we'll continue to stay on top of this and bring you the

update at 8:30. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. there's a new federal study that claims oakland police are often too quick to draw their guns. researchers reviewed dozens of police cases from january through march of this year. now, the study reportedly determined officers did not have to draw their guns in 28% of the incidents that were examined. that same study found police are most likely to pull out their guns when they confronted african-american suspects. police are looking for shaday sweetwine. she has not been home since august 31st when she left her oakland school. here's her picture. she's about 5'0", weighs about 131, has black hair and brown eyes. police have reason to believe

she may be in oakland or berkeley. the man of killing a vees radio host during a san jose crime spree is due in court. paul castillo is facing federal judges for kidnapping and killing sinnedny nguyen last friday. police say that kill took place after castillo shot and wounded someone pumping gas during a robbery attempt. police say two people connected with the san jose pot club helped him elude police for three days. authorities are calling it the biggest pot bust in history. sheriff deputies are looking for the pot farmers who now appear to be on the run. a new study successes

medical marijuana dispensaries do not lead to more crime. the information group reviewed crime reports for the ten days before and after the center closed. researchers found the crime went up once the dispensary is closed. explanations include having more police and private security on the scene when dispensaries are open. 7:34. a nevada funeral home offering to bury all of the victims of the reno air crash for free. the owner of walton's funerals heard about one of the families and decided to provide burials for each of the 11 victims. there's new video coming out of that air crash. i have to wash you. some of it may be disturbing and -- warn you. some of it may be disturbing and may be hard to watch. it shows it making a loop before it hits the ground and then disintegrates. the speculator who shot this gives us the clearest view yet of this impact -- impacts.

coming up, a local airshow. the economic recovery for california's inland areas may take at least six more years. there's a new report out that says aias like san joaquin -- areas like san joaquin valley will lag behind the state because there's little need for home construction. people are either buying or renting closer to their homes in other urban or coastal areas. it's the depth of the hole and the depth of perception. >> most of that has been driven by the crash in the real estate market. >> now unemployment rates are among the highest in the inland areas which makes it not attractive from people migrating from other states. officials don't expect the pre-

recession high until 2017 or even after that. san francisco offering free help for residents struggling with financial problems. for two day, the city is offering a hotline put together by financial exexperts -- experts. the hotline will be available from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on september 27 and september 28th. you just have to call 211. volunteer experts will offer advice and offer low-cost counseling services. right now, president obama is speaking at the united nations' general assembly. the president has said in his remarks earlier that there's no shortcut to resolving the decades' old conflict between the i race -- between the israelis and the palestinians. that's are live pictures of the president -- these are live pictures of the president. coming up at 7:45, we'll have a live report from our

washington, d.c. newsroom. president obama's upcoming bay area visit will include a town hall meeting on jobs at mountain view-based linked in. monday's gathering is called putting america back to work. people can submit questions about job creation and the economy for the president to answer and the event will be streamed live. the president's visit includes two fund-raising events, there will be a cocktail gathering at woodside and a dinner of the atherton home of facebook's ceo. a petition to save hangar one at moffett field is headed -- headed to the desk of dianne feinstein at stake is almost 32 million to replace the siding on this building. the original siding contains toxic materials. many republicans are strongly opposed to that project.

messages and e-mails that would tell them about construction, street sweeping and other. boy, that would be convenient. >> it sure would. hey, sal, can you help us with the toll plaza? >> i'm trying to. expect some slow traffic here. it's backed up pretty slow from the macarthur maze a 20-minute wait before you make it on the bridge. if you are driving on the east shore freeway, most of that is slow coming through richmond, el cerrito and berkeley. also this morning we're looking at the commute into san francisco, northbound 101 that looks pretty good so far approaching the downtown area. if you are on 101 heading down the peninsula, 101 traffic -- looks okay. we do have some slow traffic here and there in burlingame, 101 is slower than 230.

you can see it, it's just right there on the coast. a little bit has come on the golden gate. that's about it. coast and bay fog. usually you are the -- usually you are the first ones to see it. although, our lows, 50s to 60s. 50 in santa rosa, 51 napa. i think it was san anselmo, i think they went from 46 to 95. just amazing on these lotus highs. 60s for some. although -- although, and these -- although, although an these are things i looked at. in some of the higher elevation i noticed a cooling. they weren't changing. that may be a sign that it will still be hot inland. usually takes another day to cool down those inland areas once the fog comes back to the coast. that system to the north should start to bring in a almost breeze. fog, sun, very hot to warm.

investors are waiting from -- are waiting for the statement from the federal reserve today. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is currently down, 17. nasdaq is up 8. s&p is down 3. google's stock is up to 546. keep an eye on oracle. it's trading at $30.18.

after yesterday's closing bell, or raw call announced first quarter profits topped $1.8 billion. that's up 36% from the same time last year. the redwood shores-based company says revenue was up 12% but the service business continues to slide. existing home sales report for august and the number of americans who brought previously-occupied home rose 7.7% last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of about 5 million homes. but sales were driven by increased foreclosures, a sign the housing market is still weak and buyers are still looking for bargains. homes in foreclosure made up 31% in sales. and ben bernanke and his colleagues will wrap up their policy meeting in about three and a half hours. many economists believe they will announce the fed is reaching 50 years into the past for the next move by the central bank. that's when a plan called

york. the president is addressing a looming diplomatic crisis for the middle east and for american policy there. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. bureau on what the president said about the prospects for peace. allison? >> reporter: that's right, dave. in the theme of president obama's address to the united nations' this morning is the pursuit of peace in an imperfect world and he repeated a few times that peace is hard. more nations have stepped forward to maintain international peace and security and he outed his own -- he touted his own progress. >> let their be no doubt -- the tide of war is receding. when i took office roughly 180,000 americans were serving in iraq and afghanistan. by the end of this year, that number will be cut in half and

it will continue to decline. >> reporter: president obama also explained why he opposes the controversial move this week by palestinian leaders to seek u.n. recognition as a sovereign state. he said that must be negotiated with israel. >> peace is hard work. peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the united nations. if it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now. >> reporter: now, president obama is meeting with israeli and palestinian leaders. more on his message to them during my next update next -- during my update next hour. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. lawmakers in washington can't agree how to pay for disaster relief. they are debating about whether to give more than $3.5 million to help the victims of hurricane irene and other natural disasters. republicans want to offset the cost by cutting spending elsewhere. this dispute raises the possibility of another

government shutdown because that disaster relief still is attached to a measure that will fund the government through the middle of november. ten minutes before 8:00, flights are cancelled and many trains are out of service in japan because of a typhoon that made landfall overnight. the storm is bringing heavy rain and winds up to 100 miles per hour. we're now getting word that six people are dead or missing. more than $1 million people in the central part of the country have been told to evacuate. there's also concern about the nuclear plant damaged by the march earthquake and tsunami. the fear is that the storm could cause radioactive leaks. meanwhile, our national weather service will test its tsunami warning system. here along the coast of california, oregon and washington, it will profit the test on its radio station between -- broadcast the test on its radio station between 10:15 and 10:30. a south bay business owner
