have been released. claudine wong joins us live from uc berkeley with all of the developments this morning and where the two men are expected to be headed. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. certainly we've been watching everything coming out of iran. we've been waiting for this confirmation that they've actually left the grounds of the prison because we've known since early this morning that there were a couple of cars with swiss diplomats there. they pulled up to the gates. they had not left yet. but they have now left. this all started overnight as word came from the attorney for these two men that all of the necessary signatures were in hand, then diplomatic vehicles were arriving at about 3:30 our time to the prison and then about 4:45 this morning. there was a -- about 4:45 this morning, there was word that the two men were freed after

spending two years in that prison. details are still coming in about about how this happened. >> i'm sure there are so many things that we don't know and we will never know about the story and what happened behind the scenes and all of the negotiations that took place. just really glad the effort of our government took place and a lot of support it took to get them oust. so what's next? this is sarah shourd. ant -- at this point, we have confirmation they are free. it appears they've left the prison in iran. people here on the uc berkeley campus obviously reacting very happy to the news about them

being free. more development the coming. we'll monitor these for you. back to you. >> thank you. san francisco police checking surveillance video as they search for the gunman who shot and wounded a 5-year-old girl. this happened late yesterday while the child was walking with her father. investigators say the little girl was shot in the left knee after being caught in the crossfire of gun battle. she's listed in stable condition. police say there were a lot of witnesses and they are urging those witnesses to come forward. >> we do believe there are people that have seen things and may know things. this is the time to come forward. it's really important to come forward. we cannot have kids being shot as they walk down the street.

police are looking for two shooters who shot at least four rounds. 7:04. the city of san jose faces a financial crisis. a report to the city council says they've have two options -- other raise taxes or slash numerous programs and services. kraig debro is live in san jose to explain why the budget outlook appears so grim. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a lot of people out here are hoping it's not both of those things, both raises taxes and cutting programs. the city manager has delivered suggestions about how to do this. last may she delivered a similar scenario. now what they are talking about is certainly a lot more drastic. so eliminating all library services. that's one suggestion. not opening four libraries that were scheduled to open until

next year. putting that off until next year and also increasing taxes. the mayor has put that forward earlier this year. there was a survey that came out that suggested that citizens in san jose says they are not ready for that. they want to put pension reform on the ballot and that's something that that same survey said they would get behind. there's also talk of cutting park ranger services. libraries is already cut. they are gonna possibly eliminate all library service. right now, libraries are only open 40 hours a week. the head librarian wants to cut that back. there will be a lot more discussion about this as the days and weeks move on. one of the other cuts they are talking about is eliminating crossing guards at school -- at

schools. google will be feeling the heat today. the hearing that's called "the power of google -- serving consumers or threatening competition"? that's coming up. there's also lums about a toxic -- results about a toxic substance. the presence of business foe knoll-a or bpa in -- biz nonal- a or bpa. bpa has been connected to so many medical problems, including breast and prostate cancer. early puberty in girls, type ii diabetes and attention hyperactivity disorder. today is another spare the

westbound bay bridge incline looks pretty good. there is a small delay on the toll plaza. if you are driving on highway 4, we have slow traffic backed up to bay point. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. the fog has come back to the golden gate, golden gate fields, right over towards alcatraz. it's shallow. so the fog is back, although it's not going to have much impact inland, it will still be warm to hot. so cool to hot. if you are in that fog, it will be in the 50s or 60s. if you don't have any marine influence whatsoever. the bigger fog bank will greet us. we'll start a cooldown. maybe some high clouds from the south saturday and more so on sunday. yesterday, some of the highs, the leader of the pack, livermore, at 101. santa rosa had 98. redwood city said 96.

san jose, 94 and downtown san francisco, 86. the oakland airport was 93. coast and bay fog is there. it's very low. some of it could be very thick. there's hardly any breeze whatsoever. it's trying to turn westerly. everything is really calm. the system approaching the pacific northwest it should start to pick that breeze up. look at the -- look at the lows from 50, 51, there's already a 10-degree difference or -- or more. the highs are in here for a 5- degree difference. that system is getting closer. as it does, that will start to enhance. fog and then also lift it. that will be the key as we get the heat in the valley. once that heat gets bumped out, today looks cool by the coast. we'll from go -- we'll go from

60 to 100. a large spread inland. it will be in the 90s to near 100. closer to the bay, 70s and 80s. it's always the toughest forecast, how much the inland areas, not so much there but by the coast. 50s, 60s for some. and then 80s, low, mid- to upper or even some 90s. the extended outlook makes a more -- it will be cooler with a lot of clouds for the weekend. thank you. happening right now, president obama is getting set to address the united nations' general assembly. you are looking live at the podium. just a short time ago, we saw brazil's president delma russo -- delma russo. coming up at 7:45. we'll have analysis about the

president's address. this the u.n. official introducing the president. there is quite a lot of attention focused on this speech and this event happening at the united nations because of the situation with the middle east and the request by palestinian leaders for state hood. we can listen in right now to the president and hear what he has to say. >> ladies and gentlemen, it's a great honor for me to be here today. i would like to talk to you about a subject that is at the heart of the united nations. the pursuit of peace in an imperfect world. war and conflict have been with us since the beginning of civilization. but in the first part of the 20th century, the advance of modern weaponry led to death on a saggering scale.

with this killing -- it was this killing that compelled the founders of this body to focus on not just ending one war but averting others, southern earn states that would seek to end conflict while also addressing its causes. no american did more to pursue the objective than president franklin roosevelt. he knew that a victory in war was mott enough. as he said at one of the very first meetings on the founding of the united nations, we have got to make not merely piece but a piece that will last. the men and women who built this institution understood that peace is more than just the absence of war, a lasting peace for nations and for

just about a half-hour ago, we got word confirming that shane bauer and josh fattal have left the prison. claudine wong will join us with an update at 8:00, including where the two men are expected to be headed. homicide detectives in richmond are looking for clues following a very gruesome discovery inside of a popular restaurant. tara moriarty is here to tell us what led up to this murder mystery. tara? >> reporter: well, richmond police should be giving us an update any minute. they did tell us that they believe this all started as a domestic dispute. we also just got off the phone with the coroner's office and they are still keeping the identity of this female victim under raps. this is whereby the owner of this restaurant found the

victim's body in the bathroom. it happened around 7:30 witnesses say they saw the woman alive inside the building off san pablo avenue. the business owner said he left her with customers while he ran errands and when he came back, the place was locked up and empty. he started to get ready for the evening. didn't see her but several hours later began searching and found her body in that bathroom. police responded to an argument between a man and a woman here in the evening. they saw nothing so they left. we also spoke to some nearby business owners. they were telling us that the owner of this restaurant is fairly knew only been here a -- new only been here a couple of weeks. we'll continue to stay on top of this and bring you the

update at 8:30. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. there's a new federal study that claims oakland police are often too quick to draw their guns. researchers reviewed dozens of police cases from january through march of this year. now, the study reportedly determined officers did not have to draw their guns in 28% of the incidents that were examined. that same study found police are most likely to pull out their guns when they confronted african-american suspects. police are looking for shaday sweetwine. she has not been home since august 31st when she left her oakland school. here's her picture. she's about 5'0", weighs about 131, has black hair and brown eyes. police have reason to believe

she may be in oakland or berkeley. the man of killing a vees radio host during a san jose crime spree is due in court. paul castillo is facing federal judges for kidnapping and killing sinnedny nguyen last friday. police say that kill took place after castillo shot and wounded someone pumping gas during a robbery attempt. police say two people connected with the san jose pot club helped him elude police for three days. authorities are calling it the biggest pot bust in history. sheriff deputies are looking for the pot farmers who now appear to be on the run. a new study successes

medical marijuana dispensaries do not lead to more crime. the information group reviewed crime reports for the ten days before and after the center closed. researchers found the crime went up once the dispensary is closed. explanations include having more police and private security on the scene when dispensaries are open. 7:34. a nevada funeral home offering to bury all of the victims of the reno air crash for free. the owner of walton's funerals heard about one of the families and decided to provide burials for each of the 11 victims. there's new video coming out of that air crash. i have to wash you. some of it may be disturbing and -- warn you. some of it may be disturbing and may be hard to watch. it shows it making a loop before it hits the ground and then disintegrates. the speculator who shot this gives us the clearest view yet of this impact -- impacts.

hayward, union city, fremont, very slow on the way down to the south bay. 7:40 let's go to steve. okay. thank you, sal. we're near beautiful belmont. yes. some fog is over the hill but it's right there on the -- i mean, on the ground there, by the coast, diane also up and kings mountain said i can see the fog there. it's not into pescadero. it's not making much of an impact unless you are right by the coast. yesterday we had the offshore breeze. took care of the fog, wiped it out. summer arrived. well, it's ending. it's the last week of summer. and temperatures, they warmed right up. livermore 1 -- livermore 101. gilroy, 101. the fog is there. >> it's very shallow. i just sent it out on -- a picture on twitter you.

you can see it, it's just right there on the coast. a little bit has come on the golden gate. that's about it. coast and bay fog. usually you are the -- usually you are the first ones to see it. although, our lows, 50s to 60s. 50 in santa rosa, 51 napa. i think it was san anselmo, i think they went from 46 to 95. just amazing on these lotus highs. 60s for some. although -- although, and these -- although, although an these are things i looked at. in some of the higher elevation i noticed a cooling. they weren't changing. that may be a sign that it will still be hot inland. usually takes another day to cool down those inland areas once the fog comes back to the coast. that system to the north should start to bring in a almost breeze. fog, sun, very hot to warm.

after yesterday's closing bell, or raw call announced first quarter profits topped $1.8 billion. that's up 36% from the same time last year. the redwood shores-based company says revenue was up 12% but the service business continues to slide. existing home sales report for august and the number of americans who brought previously-occupied home rose 7.7% last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of about 5 million homes. but sales were driven by increased foreclosures, a sign the housing market is still weak and buyers are still looking for bargains. homes in foreclosure made up 31% in sales. and ben bernanke and his colleagues will wrap up their policy meeting in about three and a half hours. many economists believe they will announce the fed is reaching 50 years into the past for the next move by the central bank. that's when a plan called

be 0 headed to oman. they were -- may be headed to oman. they were instrumental in that bill the two men needed. people are expressing a lot of relief they are finally free. this started early in morning and it really picked up steam when the attorneys for the two men said the paperwork to get them out was complete and release was imminent and then we started to see activity outside of the prison in tehran, iran. at about 4:45 this morning, official confirmation came that the two men, josh fattal and shane bauer, were officially free. >> it's a tough situation. they have really tough politics over there. i mean they have to say it's a mistake. i'm not surprised it took so long but it's good to see they finally let them go. >> what's next? this is video of sarah shourd after she was released.

the country of oman did confront that they put up her $500,000 bail. the first thing she did when she was released. she flew there and was reunited with her mother and she got in front of the cameras and she thanked iran and made a big point making sure that was very clear. so some people are speculating we'll see the same kind of ning here. if that's true, the country put up the bails for the two hikers just released this morning, we may expect a similar situation, a similar reunion, a similar thank you. that's what we're waiting for. but again, the latest word coming from iranian state tv is that these two men for first time are out of prison, and on their way out of that country. >> and sarah shourd, she's been living in oakland. do we have any idea her

whereabouts? >> reporter: no. she was in oakland and then new york. i put in a call. they've been very quiet over the last few weeks because they didn't want to say anything that would disrupt anything that's going on. you might imagine if they did, in fact, fly the countries to oman for some type of reunion, that she would have been a part of the envoy. i put in a call and i haven't heard. but they've been deliberate lit quiet. we do expect to hear from them as all of this develops. >> thank you, claudine. three minutes after 8:00, some parents in oakland are fighting to keep their children's school from closing. parents of kaiser elementary students raised their derns -- concerns at a district meeting last night. the district says the school has the fewest number of children attending there. but parents say the school is at full capacity and serves a

diverse population. kaiser, santa fe, marshall, maxwell work, sobante park, lakeview, burk halter and lozair are slated to close. on friday, the superintendent is expected to recommend which ones will close and then in late october, the school board will make a final decision. and then clayton, they hope to reach a dom pro-- compromise when they reach with officials. the board told supporters they need to address a list of concerns about the budget and academic plans by february. but the charter committee objects. tonight, the last of district two to reconsider the conditions. they will hold a 7:00 p.m. rally at the school. he's one of the best. he's the star of the giants, he's been red hot, especially recently. but now the panda may need

good morning we have fog on the coast coming through the golden gate but it's sunny for many. it will be very warm to hot inland. it will cool off anywhere from five maybe 15 degrees. fog should cool off everyone starting tomorrow, though. the government says it does have a response plan in case that plummeting nasa satellite falls on u.s. soil. the satellite is expected to reenter the earth's orbit sometime between tomorrow and saturday, and there is a one in 3200% chance that someone may get injured by the falling debris. the government says fema has six teams on stand-by around the corn country ready to be deployed in case the satellite falls in the u.s. nasa may need to solve a vision problem among astronauts before plans in the future -- before it plans any future long-

term missions. the severity of the problem seems to be linked to the time in place. nasa has ordered dozens of researchers to look into the issue. seven scientists are on trial now in italy. they are accused of not predicting a major earthquake two years ago. it was a 6.3 magnitude quake, killed more than 300 people in april of 2009. they call it case a legal attack on science. search-and-rescue continue in india's him ma leah -- himmy halen region -- him ma layen region. at least 99 deaths are confirmed in india, tib bettette and ne -- tibet and

way up to sunnyvale. we can find some fog. it's way up there. it's on parts of the coast. but there's not much to work with. it's there. it wasn't there yesterday. we had clear conditions on the coach and temperatures warmed up. that will not be the case today -- on the coast and temperatures warmed up. that will not be the case today. the fog is back, kind of. i mean it's there. cool to hot. bigger fog bank. it will be cooler to warmer. much cooler. there's a lot going on, typhoon -- timon, moving across the pacific. tropical clouds. we'll see how it all plays in. it looks like it will be much, much cooler. the mere fact that the fog is fact means the fog cools down. some 40s again toward the north bay. there was a breeze for a while at oakland airport and also fairfield now any are calm again which is a sure sign they
