towards his majesty of iran for obtaining our release. >> reporter: the families released a statement, saying today can only be described as the best day of our lives. we have waited 26 months for the moment. and the joy and relief we feel about their freedom knows no bounds. one friend has known shane bauer and sarah shourd for years, and said he learned of the release from share in a late night phone message. >> i got a call from sarah, it was unknown, i didn't pick up. i checked the voice mail. it was sarah saying it was really happening . >> reporter: he knows what they want to do. >> i want to go on a hike with them. i mean after two years in confinement. they want to get outside, go for a hike in the east bay hills. >> reporter: no word on when the released hikers will be back here in the u.s. live, channel 2 action news. and today's release was a long time coming for the uc

graduates, shane bauer, josh fattal and sarah shourd were all arrested on july 31 when they were hiking along the border there. their mothers went for a brief two-day visit. but that was the last time bauer and josh fattal saw their family in prison. then, sarah shourd was released on humanitarian grounds due to health problems. right now on ktvu you can watch the raw video on the reunion with the families in oman. just click on the hikers tab. and the man cried today as he was arraigned on criminal charges, 33-year-old paul castillo facing eight charges, including murder. his attorney says his client has been placed on suicide watch. the district attorney says that castillo shot a man at a san jose gas station last friday, then carjacked and kidnapped 60- year-old cindy nguyen.

her body was found saturday morning. and we are learning more details on how michelle le's body was found. the spokesperson was with her search dog on saturday when her dog suddenly stopped. >> she had stopped by a flat area and was waiting patiently for me. i approached her, noticed remains. >> reporter: authorities determined the remains were those of the missing nursing student. mcgonigal's own daughter, amber was kidnapped and killed in 2009. her body went undiscovered for a year. that led her mother to form her own search group. and being shot in san francisco's bay view district. david stevenson has more. >> reporter: frank, the shooting happened behind me just a few hundred feet down the block. and tonight this district's political leader is challenging residents to step up to stop the violence.

life went on today along this stretch of third street, 24 hours after a child was shot and seriously wounded here in front of her father. >> these kids have to stop this. that is all. >> reporter: the gunfire broke out just before 4:30. the police say two suspects fired at least four shots at each other on third street near palou avenue. a five-year-old girl was struck in the knee by a bullet as her father walked her home from school? there were gunshots fired. he continued to walk, looked to the side. he noticed his daughter was down on to ground. >> reporter: the girl's mother and family members have not spoken to us, she is hospitalized in serious condition. >> she is recovering well from the surgery to her left knee, she is recovering today. >> reporter: police say surveillance video may offer clues to catch the alleged gunmen. but received no tips from the community. >> i am at my breaking point. >> reporter: hours before the

shooting, the supervisor introduced legislation to study what is being done to keep kids safe near san francisco schools. today she challenged the bay view community to react to this shooting with the same amount of anger, seen after the july shooting death of the seattle parolee, ken harding jr. on this same block. >> you heard the anger and how raw community felt about this incident. well, this is the same emotion, we're talking about something serious, the youngest member of the complain. >> reporter: now we have learned that the mayor is planning to try to visit the young girl in the hospital tonight. police are asking anybody with information about the shooting to call their anonymous tip line. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu. and one man dead, another is in critical condition following a shooting near children's hospital in oakland. it happened about 11:00 this morning on 52nd street near west street, just across martin luther king, jr. way from the hospital. police say there were multiple shots fired out on the street.

and employees tell us the hospital was on lockdown for about 15 minutes, immediately following the shooting. >> i was concerned, i was concerned and scared. you know living around this neighborhood, i mean it can be pretty dangerous. >> reporter: police say no arrests have been made. seniors and people with disabilities gathered in san francisco's civic center this afternoon to speak out about possible cuts to medicare and medicaid. several groups organized today's protest, members say they're concerned that the super committee that is looking at deficit reduction in washington will slash spending for federal health care programs. >> and i'm on several of these programs, i'm on medical and medicare. and i'm seeing my own safety net disappearing before my eyes. >> advocates say their protest is meant to show the faces of those who would be most affected by possible cuts. and california's prison system will make a dramatic

change in just ten days. new at 6:00, ktvu's ken pritchett has more at the state capitol, when governor brown said he would move prisoners to local custody. >> reporter: well, we were there when governor brown promised a roomful of law enforcement officials that they wouldn't be short-changed, that the money will be there for the governor's realignment plan. realignment, in short it means nonviolent, nonsex crime offenders will spend time in local jails, not state prison. and the same class of parolee will be under the state, not local supervision. that regards the inmates and cadillac treatment, as governor brown puts it. >> the goal is not to try to change the lives of the criminal but to make sure that they're the most healthy in the world. that they live longer, and they run faster, and they shoot straighter.

>> reporter: to laughter came as they looked at the flood of criminals coming their way. >> it is the moststock reform. >> reporter: she is the chief probation officer, saying that san francisco expects more than 200 new inmates this year fromerer alignment, and probation cases to jump by 700. but she says that san francisco can handle it with extra jail staff, probation officers and funding more rehab programs. >> i am convinced the locals can do a better job. >> reporter: it will divert the program. some are concerned that a future legislator or governor will cut the promised funding. >> without that you're just dumping to the state, the cities and counties. you're setting people up for failure. >> reporter: governor brown says he wants voters to pass a constitutional amendment to guarantee funding for his realignment plan. until then, counting on long- term funding is a leap of

faith. in sacramento, ken pritchett ktvu. and coming up at 6:15, governor brown is making a dent in the hundreds of bills waiting for signature. the new laws he just signed that will impact the bay area. and the republican party to collect signatures to overturn the state's new district maps. analysts say redistricting could give democrats a two thirds super majority in the state senate, which will be enough votes to raise taxes or fees. the letter is going out to 250,000 republican voters with the hopes of putting the measure on the june ballot. >> what we're trying to do is say to the folks look, somebody has to be standing there at the watch tower to make sure that the taxpayer's interests are protected. >> for those -- >> last week, republican leaders filed a lawsuit to try to repeal the redistricting plan. and pg&e right now still working to restore gas service after a leak in san francisco forced evacuations and a shelter in place. those have now been lifted. but pg&e says gas probably

won't be back on until ten or 11:00 tonight. pg&e says a contractor cut through a 10-inch gas pipe near union square at about 2:15 this afternoon. and that intersection is still closed at this hour. they say the contractors started digging before the marks were put down. the contractor says that the marks were in the wrong place. and a company executive testified before a senate panel. executive chairman schmidt fought with lawmakers regarding google. the hearing on whether or not google is steering internet users away from competitors. they say they're free to go elsewhere. >> if you don't like that engine search, you can switch with literally one click. >> google is based in mountain view. and the company processes about two of every three on-line search requests in the u.s.

and netflix signing a deal. the cable company's first entry into offering shows on the internet. that includes popular channels such as discovery, tlc and animal planet. and a move by the federal reserve to buy long-term bonds was not enough to investors on wall street today. stocks went down, dow closing down 283 points, the nasdaq off 52. and former vice president al gore set the rumor mill on fire with one word, iphones. in south africa, in a speech, he reported that the new apple is coming out next month. apple did not decline, but looked at reports of new iphones and media events on october 4. and granted patents in china, they are looking against guarding against

. bay area nurses preparing for a one-day strike tomorrow. 23,000 nurses will participate at the children's hospital in oakland, and many sutter medical centers in northern and central california. they say the company wants to restrict their ability to care for patients, reduce health coverage and even eliminate

sick days. the kaiser nurses are joining the strike in sympathy. >> it would require them to stay longer, perhaps be here on the strike day. we rescheduled those patients. >> if we don't stand together now, we will lose what we have now. >> and children's hospital is calling the strike "irresponsible and thoughtless" the strike is set to begin at 7:00 tomorrow morning. ktvu.com has a list of bay area hospitals impacted under the ktvu right now tab on our home page. and governor brown signed four laws today from bay area lawmakers as he makes his way through hundreds of bills waiting for his signature. and one of those signed today impacts vazka road in the east bay, it gives alameda roads and contra costa county, help for the collision rate. the bill's author says that there were 24 accidents along vasco road last year. and a second ban regards

cocktails, regarding fruits, vegetables and spices. it estimated that 50 bay area restaurants serve infused drinks. and the sheriff's office and dea taking more than 7000 marijuana plants in west marin. the estimated street value? 9million. authorities say they got a tip from deer hunters who ran across the site. deputies are still looking for the growers. and san jose going to dramatically reduce the number of medical marijuana clubs in that city from 140 down to 10. new at six, robert handa has more information on the opposition regarding the plan. >> reporter: and many say the pot clubs including the one behind me, they are interested in the study. pot clubs are big business.

the city bases regulations on the belief that pot clubs attract crime. this small, clean home on meridian avenue in san jose doesn't attract much attention now. but in december, they raided it. >> there was not a crowd of people here, it was just a car here, a car there. >> reporter: a corporation study of 600 los angeles pot clubs shows the clubs were not crime magnets, and neighborhood crime including breaking and entering, and assaults jumped dramatically after clubs and security measures went away. the study covered crime statistics 10 days before and after closure. some san jose workers say it will affect them. >> i think there is evidence to show that the places don't increase crime, and in fact can be a positive impact on the community. >> reporter: but the study comes as police investigate a shooting outside a vallejo pot

club and after san jose police raided the tree house, because two people associated with that club are suspected of helping paul castillo, the man involved in a crime spree that includes a shooting, car jacking and a theft. >> it will take monitoring that type of activity for much more than 20 days. >> reporter: the owners agree. >> each dispensary would be a whole other study. >> reporter: in this case, the crimes are expected to be part of the debate when the city looks into the matter next week. and your tax dollars paying for the food that makes you fat. that is according to a new report from the california public interest research group. researchers say billions in agricultural subsidies pay for food ingredients such as corn starch. the report found that it helped

in some places, basically almost the same day, except right at the coast where it was significantly cooler. and tonight with that fog, low clouds, a dense fog advisory in the monterey area last night because of the inversions that are tight and shallow. it makes the visibility poor on the grant highway, higher one and north up into the head lands, be careful driving tonight, tomorrow, overnight lows in the 50s, 60s, low 50s up in the santa rosa area. and the high pressure center that is here has kept us pretty warm but it's changing. we'll have a cooling trend, it was cooler today. you will notice it saturday, sunday, it won't get cold. but saturday, sunday looking at mid-80s, low 80s on sunday. this little pressure shows up, bringing not only cooling and more fog but also brings a slight chance of shower on sunday. so i mean -- looking at two runs, a few sprinkles possible,

as far south as oakland, san francisco and fremont. on sunday. but right now, i can tell you the cooling trend right in the bay area week. what does it do for the fire danger? a lot. saves a lot of energy on the firefighters' concern. sunday, 6:00. there is the computer model saying look, maybe a little bit of shower activity. let's watch it. that is how close it gets to us. the forecasted highs, lots of 90s, still hot inland. right? cooler around the bay like in alameda. and fremont, instead of 90s you're looking at low 80s, 70s, along the coast, low 60s at best. so your five-day forecast with your weekend view looking like this. plenty of warm weather, cooling settles in, and then with a chance of rain on sunday, sprinkles on sunday we start to feel like fall, and of course friday is the first official beginning of fall. so we're getting there. >> thank you bill.

and joe is in for mark tonight, boy the season didn't go like they wanted to, but they made a move? >> yes, the oakland a's made it official, bob melvin signing on as the official manager after being the interim manager. he took over for bob gerin in june, and has been 42 and 49 since then, he is a local guy from california, played college ball at cal, played his career with the giants. what teams were his favorites growing up? >> well, i was a frontrunner is what i was. i grew up a 49ers, raider, giant, a's -- i'll tell you what. when i was a kid it was a lot easier to be an a's fan than a giant's fan. when i was coming to post- season games it was always here not on the other side, where you're moving around a lot to be able to come home in this fashion, it just doesn't happen a lot.
