[ chanting ] >> thousands of northern california nurses out of hospitals and walking picket lines. good afternoon. i'm tory campbell. we'll have more on that in a moment. but, first, kidnapping victim jaycee dugard filed a complaint against the federal government. the complaint says that the federal government had supervisory parole over her kidnapper and his wife and that continued in 1999 when the state took control. dugard is not seeking damages for herself in the federal complaint and will donate any money awarded by the judge to the jaycee fun case which helps

kidnapping victims many. a 16-hour standoff came to an end in san leandro. police shot and wounded a man suspected of kill his girl friend in richmond. officers took the man into custody around 2:00 a.m. outside a home on central avenue west of hysperian boulevard. tara moriarty reported on the killing of a mother yesterday. today, she spoke with the stunned daughter of the homicide suspect >> reporter: police say that the suspect was hiding out in this house in san leandro after kill his ex-girlfriend tuesday night. i'm surprised of what we heard. they say that he murdered someone. >> reporter: raphael vialente had a volatile relationship. >> everybody in the family is in shock. no one thought that he would do something like this. no one thought that he was

capable of didding something like this. >> reporter: investigators believe that durante killed romero although they won't say how in the bathroom of a restaurant where the vick till worked. >> her ex had been stalking her for at least a month. according to richmond police, no restraining order was ever filed. they are checking with law enforcement in other cities and saying it's important for victims they document everything with police. >> there's tons of resources that we can goat relocate victims, get victims the help that they need to get away from these perpetrators. they are obviously violent. this is a tragic end and we never like to hear about cases ending this way. >> richmond and s.w.a.t. team tried to negotiate starting ned morning lasting through the wee hours. >> the suspect continued to be uncooperative. at about 1:40, he aggressed some officers with what appeared to be a long rifle in his hand. he was shot.

down 47. hewlett packard board members, however, expected to name former ebay ceo meg whitman as the company's new ceo after the closing bell. according to all things digital, the board is meeting today and it's almost a done deal. the sources say that whitman would be appointed for the long term and not as interim ceo as some people speculated. signs of a big announcement are already bolstered by words that whitman had hired a consultant from her days at ebay and as candidate for governor. thousands of nurses are out of hospitals and walking picket lines since this morning. we have been following the walkout all day long and talks about the issue. >> reporter: lorraine will get her stitches removed but only after she gets into the

hospital. 20,000 health care workers are working picket lines in northern and central california the one-day strike is being used to highlight a number of issues from patient care to benefits. >> it's a message to the employers that they cannot continue to doing business as usual. >> there won't be much of that today, but people like lorraine johnson aren't taking sides. >> i think it would be fair for them to get what they are asking for. >> reporter: the bulk of striking workers are nurses with the california nurses association taking part in a sympathy strike. nurses working at several hospitals say that their employers try to make them work when sick. kaiser hospitals say that their employers are trying to cut health and retirement benefit. according to kaiser, the same nurses just got a new deal we just signed a contract with them that goes into effect -- that went into effect in september and there is a no strike clause in that contract. >> reporter: kaiser stopped short of calling the action illegal. the union that had the idea for a one-day strike has just 1500

members working at kaiser. the national union of health care workers said it walked out over concerns that patients were not getting proper care. sam arpesian says that his union was not surprised when his nurses jumped in. these issues are the same issues that cut across all unions. >> reporter: even though this is a one-day strike, the struggle over benefits and parent care will last for months. >> the channel 2 website has a complete list of affected hospitals. just go to the news tab on our front page at ktvu.com. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg finished speaking at a conference and one of the announcements is na more change will be coming to the popular social network even though the recent changes are not getting a lot of likes. ktvu paul chambers joins us now

with more specifics on the changes. >> reporter: good evening. the conference is happening here behind us. mark zuckerberg wrapped up the keynote speech. he talked about a new thing called timeline. he says it will change the way people will use the social network giant by putting all their information in one place. >> timeline is the story of your life. and it has three pieces. all your stories. all your apps and a new way to express who you are. >> you can expect even more changes to your facebook page. zuckerberg says it will be more visual and it's something that they have been working on for a while now. you have seen the new feed list on your page. that's here to stay. it gives details about a person and the more information information will show up on your news feed. beside having your normal photo, you will be able to add a bigger cover photo that describes a person to take a look at your photo and give a

a student pleaded no contest this among in the death of a two-year-old girl, 19-year- old kaitlyn dunnaway was charged with manslaughter in the death of caly murray. dunnaway struck and killed the toddler as the girl and her mother crossed the street in mona park. the child's mother was seriously hurt. dunnaway was texting at the time of the accident. sentencing is set for november 16th. today, a judge is getting a

progress report on court- ordered reforms for oakland police. it's part of a fallout from the 2003 rioters police corruption case. last year, the judge threatened to put the entire police force under federal control pointing to what he called questionable officer conduct. in recent years. and the judge now has new concerns, including a federal report that says oakland police are often too quick to draw their guns. a san francisco transportation commissioner is pushing for a speed enforcement tool that is prohibited under california law. muni board members sherryl brinkman wants the city to install a network of speed- enforced cameras. they would be similar to red light cameras but they would take pictures of people speeding. several cities like oakland and san jose experimented with the cameras but shut them down because of legal challenges one bay area city is trying to put an end to 911 hangups.

vallejo resident who accidentally call 911 could be fined $200. many people simply hang up and then refuse to answer the phone when a 911 operator calls back. that often has police rushing to an emergency that does not exist. like other bay area cities, the vallejo police department is operating with a limited number of officers who waste time on accidental 911 calls. >> it's quite startling to see how few people they have. in the other organizations that i have in that have been in trouble, that had big money problems, i have not seen the level of staffing that we have here. >> the program will be introduced with a 30-day grace period and warning letters. among the few exemptions for fines are the people who admit their mistake. the san francisco fire department will pay tribute to two fallen firefighters today. lieutenant vincent perez and

firefighter medic anthony vialerio died while fighting the diamond fire. the names will be unveiled in a memorial wall dedicated to those who died in the line of duty a local company stepped in to replace some computer equipment stolen from a danville high school. someone stole 6 ipads and a mac book from a san ramon valley high. the ipads are used by special needs students. the company called gum drop cases which makes covers from ipad heard about the theft and replaced the stolen items. >> gold en gate transit is expected to approve new funding to finish installing wires internet service on their buses. they already approved a plan to approve wireless service. according to a website, it's already testing the service on some of its buses. $170,000 of the maintenance costs are already in place but more is needed to finish installing the wireless system. >> scientists will try to

pinpoint today exactly when and where that roaming satellite will crash on earth. they say this is not likely to hit in north america and it could crash land some time tomorrow. most of the satellite is expected to burn up, but some pieces will remain intact. >> there are some pieces that are made of stainless steel and titanium and barrillium. we have a list of about 26 pieces which range from a few tens of pounds to a few hundred pounds. >> once the pieces enter the atmosphere 50 miles above ground, it will likely take only a few minutes before the surviving pieces hit the earth. and in our lower atmosphere, we have this. quite a bit of fog. you can see the golden gate bridge. downtown san francisco, checking in at 65 degrees. this marine layer will gradually deepen.

as a result, that will bring in additional cooling. right now, you can see the fog still a big factor. look at the coast line from point rays. ocean beach, pacifica and the san mateo county coast line as well. current average updated. fair field checking in at 85 degrees. san jose in the lower 70s. oakland, upper 60s and santa rose yarks mostly sunny skies. forecast headline for today, coastal fog. we'll call it hot independent land. that will bring in dropping of temperatures. here we go. the satellite, can you see the storm system up to the north that will be approaching northern california and the bay area as we head into the weekend. for today, the main theme here, cool for the coast. temperatures inland not as hot but the warmer locations approaching 92 to 95 degrees. look at what happens tomorrow especially for saturday and sunday. the weather system moves in. we do have a few rain clouds up

to the north. we do introduce the slight chance of a few sprinkles that will be favoring the north bay during the afternoon and evening hours. that's something that we will be watching at least in the second half of the weekend. in the short term, the fog will be a factor, still hugging coast line and pushing back into the day into the evening hours, pushing back right around san francisco and oakland. for 3:00 this afternoon a big temperature range, 60s, 70s, 80s. upper 50s to the mid-70s and fog will be on the increase. temperatures this afternoon most neighborhoods this afternoon compared to yesterday compared about three to six degrees cooler, so not a big time cooldown but, still, temperatures are cooling off. san jose, 84. live more, 93. half moon bay in the lower 60s. that fog still out there in the afternoon hours. here is a look ahead at your extended forecast with the weekend always in few. temperatures a touch cooler for friday. there we go, that cooling trends by sunday. saturday, the warmest locations only in the 60s and 70s.

taking a live look at the big board on wall street. numbers continuing their downward trend as we head into the last half hour of trading. new comments from treasury secretary timothy geithner saying that political divisions in the u.s. are the biggest threat to the economy. and the dow couplely down 519. nasdaq is down 116. s&p down 52. all those indexes down about 4 1/2%. a new survey shows this is likely to be another rough

holiday season for retailers. shoppers are expected to make fewer trips to stores and when they do show up, they are likely to head straight for the bargains never researched in advance. businesses have been working to keep inventory to a minimum to avoid a markdown that eats into their marktown and that could create short annuals for people who wait until the last minute to shop. and we have developing news to report about a grass fire that's burning in east bay at this hour. it's happening in hercules. these are live pictures from news chopper 2 over the scene in hercules where crews are battling a two-alarm fire. you can see one of the choppers there and quite a lot of blackened grassland it looks like. looks like the fire broke out about 45 minutes ago behind carson street and that is a residential neighborhood of single family homes. the fire has destroyed about 80 acres of grass but, so far, no
