this morning mostly cloudy skies, little bit of fog, even some patchy drizzle on the coastline. afternoon temperatures expected to take a dip, maybe 10, 15 degrees in some cases. we'll show you where, show you where what you can expect this morning. 30% chance for a sprinkle come sunday. we'll explain that coming up. it's a bake sale like no other. baked goods at a price, but a price based on your race or ethnicity. it's set for uc berkeley this week. and ali rasmus joins us live from the cal campus with more on the message behind it and the strong reactions it's bringing. ali. >> reporter: the bake sale is organized by the uc berkeley college. they're calling the increased diversity bake sale and the organizers say this title is meant to be satired. here's why. here's a look at the price list for the baked goods that will be sold. and you'll notice the price is different depending on your race or ethnicity. it will cost $2 for whites to

buy baked goods, 1.50 for asians, a dollar for latinos and so forth. it's also gender based. women gets a 25-cent discount. the college says their event is meant for satire, they're doing this to protest a bill on governor brown's desk which would allow but not require the uc system to consider race and ethnicity in admissions. some of the students we talked to say having a bake sale to protest that bill is not the right approach. >> especially in a community such as berkeley, like known for being liberal and like its opinions about certain issues. i feel like they should have thought about it. >> there shouldn't be a problem with that. reducing the issue of racial issues down to cookies, ah, i think it could have been done in a more sensitive manner. >> the bake sale is supposed to happen on tuesday afternoon, but it has generated a lot of

controversy and some outcry on campus. uc berkeley student government is supposed to have a special meeting tomorrow evening to discuss the bill and the controversy about this bake sale. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. nasa says six-ton, bus-size satellite made it back to earth, but they say it's still not sure where exactly that satellite crashed. this video from southern california shows it entering the eric's atmosphere over the pacific ocean. nasa says it fell last night between 8:23 and 10:09 pacific time. they say most of the satellite should have burned up in the atmosphere, but chunks of the old satellite were expected to survive reentry. some weighing up to 300 pounds. so far, no reports of any injuries. this morning police are warning atm users to be careful after bank workers made a surprising discovery at a local bank. pleasant hill police say someone installed two metal

boxes at two chase bank atms. those boxes have cell phones inside of them and investigators say the phones were used to record video of customers and cards. >> if you're familiar with the atm machine,ing try to notice if there's anything unusual about the machine that you use all the time. >> police are waiting for surveillance video that could show who is responsible for the scam. it is believed no customer information has been compromised because the boxes were discovered before the thieves could come back and get them. a california based bank is now in the hands of the federal government this morning. the federal corporation has seized citizens bank of northern california because of its deteriorating condition. the nevada city based bank had seven branches. the fdic says the branches will reopen on monday morning as branches of tri-county's bank. it's based in chico. citizens bank customers should see no service disruption and

the closure of the bank does bring the number of bank failures to 73 across the country. >> detectives in sunnyvale are trying to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-year-old boy. police received a report of a dead child at an apartment. when officers arrived the boy was not breathing, did not have a pulse, and saw no signs of trauma. a short time later a woman associated with the apartment was spotted apparently trying to jump from a nearby overpass above highway 101. rescue crews pulled her to safety as she climbing over the railing. a campbell woman killed lasts week will be laid to rest today. a thousand people attended a candlelight memorial service last night for 60-year-old cindy nguyen. they praised her work in the vietnamese community where she hosted a radio talk show. police say nguyen was kidnapped and shot to death last weekend.

her family spoke for the first time since her death. >> this is not a vigil -- acknowledging her death. it's a vigil acknowledging the life that she had created as well as celebrating her accomplishments in this community. >> 33-year-old parolee paul castillo is charged with nguyen's murder. san jose police chief who attended the vigil says more suspects are being sought. there is another car wash today to help the family of a 13-year-old girl who died of heart attack. friends and family of maria castro also held a car wash fund-raiser this week. she suffered heart attack and died last weekend after she was hit by a car on her way to school two weeks ago. today's fund-raiser is at the corner of 10th and west streets in pittsburg. proceeds go towards funeral costs. contra costa county has seen its first human case of the west nile virus this year.

the 49-year-old woman is recovering but infected mosquitoes have also been found in a neighborhood that was fogged two weeks ago. workers say two infected birds were discovered in other parts of the county. residents are going door to door arc alerting neighbors about the danger. >> i was surprised and shocked that the mosquitoes infected with west nile virus are actually here in our neighborhood and we're at risk. >> people age 50 and up are most vulnerable to the virus. symptoms include fevers, headaches and skin rashes. you can protect yourself by getting rid of standing water or wearing long sleeves and wearing mosquito repellent with deet. good morning to you! a live look at the foggy start in san francisco. little tough to see out there. as we mentioned at the top of the hour, even patchy drizzle. rain on the way by the end of the week. and take a look at storm- tracker here. the winds picking up in onshore breeze, fairfield reporting southwesterly wind about 13 miles per hour, has been

stronger at times this morning. westerly breeze sfo10 to 20 miles per hour, and a little bit of moisture. the most of the moisture coming from the south but it will be the pacific northwest system that brings a possibility tomorrow. a little confusing. look at the winds here. now becoming westerly, still a little west-northwest but throughout the afternoon the sea breeze is expected to strengthen ahead of the system. 58 degrees right now in napa. 54 santa rosa. 60 still in areas right around oakland. livermore at 63. 64 concord. some of us waking up a few degrees warmer than yesterday. we saw quite a warm-up yesterday, and throughout the overnight hours, with the clouds overhead managing to hold on to the heat. you can see some of the tropical moisture over parts of san joaquin valley, tapering off over our area. we even had an advisory yesterday that red flag has been allowed to expire so that is some good news. and as we moved through the afternoon, the partly cloudy skies will continue with us but they'll be coming from a different direction some take a look at the satellite and

radar. the system here will continue northeast and be out of auer way. if you are traveling to the sierra, you may have thunderstorms for your afternoon. the rest of us will be clearing out. but this is the system we're watching for the weekend. this will cool us down and again bring us a slight chance for a little bit of rain even on sunday. so we have the fog this morning, partly cloudy skies for the afternoon. a big, big drop in temperatures, from 15 to 17 degrees in areas like livermore. triple digit heat in some spots. livermore hit 101 yesterday, quite a difference for today. and you may be singing hallelujah about that one. coolest day sunday, temperatures dropping more for tomorrow of the north bay likely to see showers but the chance all the way through monterey. the storm continues its same path, we will be moving about 8:00 tomorrow morning, santa rosa possibility of a few sprinkles, just north of i-80. by 10:00, south of the golden gate by 11:00, about noontime the inner east bay and by 3 or

4:00, we're drying out some it's not going to be a lot of but it is a little strong for at least this time of year it. is the first weekend of fall, after all. afternoon highs for today, sliding back into the 70s and 80s for inland areas. low 70s right around the bay. san jose expected 77. along the peninsula here we're looking at 71 for san mateo, 64 for the city. low 60s along the coast with partly to mostly cloudy skies. extended forecast, there's your weekend. low 60s for the coast. temperatures continuing to fall inland. that slight chance of rain tomorrow, monday into tuesday we do dry out and temperatures back into the low 90s by your mid-week wednesday. we have your lunchtime numbers coming up. time is 7:10. let's give you another live look outside, and that is the golden gate bridge. you can see the southbound traffic or -- headed into san francisco. northbound traffic also moving smoothly across the bridge. if you are traveling through the north bay this morning, you may run into some traffic. caltrans has one lane of southbound 101 shut down because of a tree trimming

project. the work is taking place between petaluma and novato. that project should wrap up by 89 a.m., and another round of closures is expected tomorrow. muni is testing a new system that could reduce delays on its light rail lines. the bay citizen reports the agency is now hitching train cars together from separate lines, before they enter the underground tunnel that runs through downtown. for example, train cars from the k line and m ocean view line could be combined to make the trip to and from downtown. the cars would then are disconnected once they come out of that tunnel. time is:11. a scare during the pope's visit in germany. what police are saying about gunfire that erupted near where he was holding mass. >> dumb luck. >> and the accidental phone call that led to the arrest of two alleged drug dealers right here in northern california. ithicken patties, topped with bacon, and melting cheese plus seasoned curly fries and a drink for only $3.99!

good morning to you! a live look from bay point, partly cloudy skies. low 60s at this hour. pope benedict xvi held mass in his native germany this morning, despite a nearby shooting. this morning's mass took place in the city but an hour before it started someone shot a security guard with an air rifle rifle near the security zone. the alleged shooter has been arrested. today's mass comes just one day after the pope met with men and women who were abused as children by church clergy and other employees. in his weekly online video address, president obama once again urged congress to pass his jobs bill. he also explained his decision to allow states to opted out of parts of the no child left behind law. >> the goals behind no child left behind were admirable, experience taught us the law

and serious flaws that are hurting our children instead of helping them. teachers are boeing forced to teach to the test. while subjects like history and science are being squeezed out. >> bay area educators we caught up with yesterday in richmond applaud the move and say the law does not take into account the disparity between rich and poor districts. republicans also issued their own weekly online video address today. main senator susan collins says the u.s. economy needs a timeout from excessive regulation. >> in sports a timeout gives athletes a chance to catch their breath and make better decisions. american workers and businesses are the athletes in a global competition that we must win. >> many republicans in congress have called for a one-year moratorium on certain new federal regulations. fema could run out of money in days and congress is again locked in a partisan battle.

senate democrats have locked the bill passed by republicans that would continue to fund fema. democrats don't like that bill because it pays for funding with cuts to the federal energy loan programs. a new vote is scheduled for monday, without the cuts to the loan programs. but it's not clear if there are enough votes to pass the stripped down version. palestine has requested statehood from the united nations. you're looking at thousands of palestinians gathered in ramallah last night to celebrate the application. palestinian president abbas submitted a paperwork earlier in the day to secretary general. the u.n. secretary council is going it take up the issue on monday, but it's not likely to go far since the u.s. is opposed. president obama and others are pressing palestine to resume peace talks with israel. a jury found 10 students guilty of disrupting a speech. the verdict came down yesterday

in santa. in february of 2010 the students interrupted a speech by the israeli ambassador. orange county ended up charging the students. the students and their attorney argue they were singled out because they are muslims. >> any disturbance, anything that resulted was a result of the content of their speech, and you cannot lock people up -- excuse me, you cannot convict people based on the content of their speech. that's one of the basic principles of our society. >> the orange county district attorney defended the verdict, calling the disruption by the students organized thuggery. a family of the uc berkeley grads freed from iran have a new reason to celebrate this morning. shane bower and schara shourd are now engaged. this is a photo taken from amman putting a ring on her finger. the two were reunited wednesday after iran released the two men. bower asked shourd to marry him last year while in prison. she said he fashioned a ring

out of threads from his heart. actor sean penn may have played a role in the release of the two american hikers. venezuela government officials are reporting penn flew to venezuela to ask president chavez to intervene with iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad. venezuela's media reports that meeting led to the release of the two berkeley grads. penn spokeswoman reportedly confirmed the story but would give no further details. the fbi says it paid out a $2 million reward for tips that led to the arrest a fugitive mob boss. james bug better and his girlfriend were captured in june. he was wanted in connection with 19 murders. the fbi said at least two people received the reward money but they were not identified. authorities said one of the tips came from a woman who recognized bulger in a tv report. a suspected drug dealer now wishes he never answered the phone. a probation officer in nevada county, california was trying

to call a sheriff's deputy. she dialed the deputy's old number and reached the drug suspect instead, who thought she wanted to score some pot. the officer set. a meeting to buy an ounce of marijuana. >> he apparently thought he knew me, asked if i still wanted it, had been in a conversation with somebody recently about purchasing some marijuana. >> authorities arrested two men on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and conspiracy. those two men just had the bad luck of obtaining a phone number that once belonged to the deputy. a northern california man says he is no stranger to things falling from the sky. the out of this world object that came crashing on his home. >> a cooler pattern for your saturday, and for sunday perhaps an occasional shower. we'll explain after the break. okay, people, let's get started.

told us there's a major delay in the pittsburg bay point and dublin pleasanton line. this is all due to some trash maintenance. we're making calls to find out how long the delay is and how long it's expected to last. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. more rain is expected to fall on parts of pennsylvania today. but it won't as bad as yesterday. heavy downpours flooded the gettysburg region, and crews performed several water rescues as rising waters caught drivers off guard. some businesses like a pet store had their basement flooded and two feet of water inside. >> and i the time the firemen said we're going to get you out, it was up to our knees. we said okay, we have five dogs, what do we do? we had to get them out some we carried a few and few others swam. we had to take them out through the backdoor. >> some apartment complexes were evacuated due to rising waters. new jersey is still cleaning up from flooding caused by hurricane irene and tropical storm lee, and now they're dealing with even more

rain. the state is under a floodwatch through this afternoon. this is what it looked like in hoboken yesterday, where some businesses closed in preparation for the rising water. up to five inches of rain could fall there today. if look at that. new york also dealing with rain. this is video from inside a new york subway station that was inundated with water yesterday. transit officials say there's a huge city sewer line that runs the entire length of that platform. just about 20 minutes ago, we mentioned the nasa satellite tumbling down to earth. apparently it's no big deal to a sacramento family who says it has already encountered falling space matter. they say a meteorite slammed into their home on august 13th. it left a 4 1/2 to 6-foot hole on the roof. >> lifted it up, so you can see

a rock from -- not a rock from earth. >> we took it over to city college, to her astronomy professor, and he tested it, and it has magnetism. that's a meteorite. >> a meteorite is a small rocky fragment of other planetary bodies that fall to earth. cal tech reports that about 25 meteorites weighing more than a fifth of a pound fall on california each year. it's been a pretty hot week, but if you wanted a cool down, you'll get it. >> quite a contrast from the final days of summer to the weekend of fall. we are going to see temperatures really tumble. take a look. so yesterday, while getting a look outside our doors, it's gray sky. we'll see partly cloudy for the afternoon but onshore breeze is strengthening and we'll be cooling it down. some of the warmer temperatures from yesterday. do you see livermore, 101? for today we're looking at 84 degrees in livermore. that's 17 degrees of cooling expected for today. so you will notice no matter where you're at a few degrees

right along the coastline, maybe with 5 to 10 degrees around the bay area and inland areas 10 to 15 degrees cooler than just friday. this morning we're waking up in the 50s, low 60s. we do have mostly cloudy skies, even a little patchy drizzle on the coastline. lunchtime numbers, low 60s for the coast. partly cloudy conditions, 60s around the bay area. low 70s for some of our warmer inland areas, and then for the afternoon, temperatures again going to be nice in most cases. if you haven't been enjoying that heat, we do have some relief in sight. saturday going to be a good- looking afternoon. sunday we even take a bigger turn towards fall and we introduce the possibility of rain. we've got the north bay with a few sprinkles expected to start through the morning, and by the afternoon we'll spread south. so we have that for sunday. temperatures will be even cooler than today. but it's quick lived because monday, tuesday and wednesday temperatures rebound back into the upper 80s and 90s for inland areas by wednesday. back to you. you can visit all of

california's national parks for free today. the parks are celebrating national public lands day. entrance fees are waived for all visitors but you have to pay for camping, lodging and activities fees. national public lands day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance america's public lands. san francisco's ocean beach and other locations will get a little cleaner today. starting at 9:00 this morning, volunteers will be taking part in clean-up projects around the city's district 4 area. that includes ocean beach, irving street and areas around the high school. today's clean-up of the goes until noontime. >> a colorado cat missing future five years has turned up, 1600 miles away. willow, the cat, reunited with the squires family yesterday in new york city. someone found her recently out on the city streets, and a tracking chip on her neck led willow's rescuers to the squires. >> it made this moment

a controversial bake sale at uc berkeley that charges some people more based on the color of their skin. welcome back to mornings on 2. that bake sale has been drawing a lot of negative attention on the uc berkeley campus. ali rasmus is live this morning in berkeley with more on the point organizers are trying to make. ali. >> reporter: it's organized bit u-c berkeley college republicans. they put it up on facebook starting on thursday. and already, it's received a lot of response. you can see from the section

here that some people like it, will you and but there are a lot of comments and some people are critical of the move. here's the closeup look of the price list for the baked goods at this event. the price you'll notice is different depending on a person's race or ethnicity. it will cost $2 for white or caucasian students to buy the baked goods, 1.50 for asians, a dollar for had teenoes and 75 cents for utahans. it's also gender based. the group says it's satire, to protest a bill on the governor's deserves. listen to what students have to say. >> it just seemed a little out of place, understand people are -- it's a public university, people can do what they want. i guess i'm just more concerned about the sensitivity issue of it. could have been done in a better way to make a point.

looking closely at the video. >> based on what i see here, i think he made a reasonable attempt to detain the person. the person was combative, so he took him down to the ground. and even with the person on the ground he is still resisting. >> at one time, officers did use pepper spray to get control of the situation. police department says officers are taught to use restraint as much as possible. the redwood city school district says it's not sure what sent dozens of kindergartners home with a mysterious rash. up to 35 students got the rash last week at clifford elementary school. the school has since been cleaned and most of the students were back in the classroom this past week. today the oakland unified school district will release its final recommendations for which school should close as part of a reorganization plan. this is a preliminary list. it includes eight elementary schools and two middle schools. the board will consider the recommendations on tuesday. while many families are

bringing for the closures, one school is expanding. they're learning without limit school on 40th avenue has a new $20 million facility. the school's principal says he understands the emotional effects of the pending school closures can cause. >> parent and families in a space where -- the democratic made a decision to close the schools. >> the spokesman says each school closed would save the district between 2 and $400 thousand a year. richmond police are asking for the public's help in solving a hit-and-run that killed a man in a wheelchair. 52-year-old david cox was hit last night near 34th street and esmond avenue. police say he was struck from behind and ejected from his wheelchair. he was taken to the hospital and later died. witnesses describe the vehicle as a black two-door older model lexus with tainted windows, a rear spoiler and

likely has front-end damage. anyone with information is asked to call richmond police. thousands of people will turn out today for the salinas air show. and organizers have made a point to differentiate their air show with last week's reno air races. no spectator has died at a u.s. air show in 60 years. claims that air shows must always fly parallel to or away from the audience. the event is one of seven scheduled air shows this weekend. federal investigators looking into that reno air show crash are focusing in on the tail section of the p51 mustang. a preliminary ntsb report says photos and video evidence indicate a piece of airframe coming off during a high speed maneuver. the plane crashed into a position seat area next to the grandstands. 11 people, including the piloted, were killed. 74 were injured. the piece of the tail investigators are looking closely at is called an

pacific time. they say most of the satellite should have burned up in the atmosphere, but chunks of it were expected to survive the reentry. some weighing up to 300 pounds. detectives in sunnyvale with trying to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-year-old boy. police received a report of a dead child at an apartment on san aliso avenue. offers say the boy was not breathing and saw no signs of trauma. a short time later a woman associated with the apartment was spotted trying to jump from a nearby overpass above highway 101. crews pulled her to safety as she was climbing over the railing. a campbell woman killed last week will be laid to rest today. >> god is good ♪ ♪ >> a thousand people attend a memorial service last night for 60-year-old cindy nguyen. they praised her work in the community, where she hosted a

the time. >> police are waiting for a surveillance video of that could show who is responsible for the scam but it's believed no customer information has been compromised because the boxes and phones were discovered before the thieves could come back and get them. there's another car wash today to help the family of a 13-year-old girl who died of a heart attack. friends and family of maria castro also held a car wash fund-raiser earlier this week. she suffered a heart attack and died last weekend. she recently had gotten out of the hospital after she was hit by a car on her way to school two weeks ago. today's fund-raising car wash is at the corner of 10th and west streets in pittsburg. proceeds are going to go towards funeral costs. contra costa county has seen its first human case of the west nile virus this year. a 49-year-old woman is recovering now. officials say infected mosquitoes have also been found in a neighborhood fogged just two weeks ago. and workers say two infected birds were discovered in other parts of the county. concerned residents and are going door to door, alerting

thousands of nurses from 34 northern california hospitals went on a one-day strike on thursday. but sutter health hospitals and children's hospital refused to let them come back yesterday. the administration says they had already hired temporary workers to fill the positions for five days. >> we do a five-day contract because it's easier to recruit them to come -- it's much worth their while, much more worth their while to come for five days than to come for one. >> 17,000 nurses went on strike at kaiser and their employer didn't lock them out and they had far more people to bring in. >> the procedures at some hospitals have been postponed and surgeries were rescheduled. a school district says it's still not sure what sent dozens of kindergartners home with a mysterious rash. 35 students developed the rash all over their bodies last week at clifford elementary school. officials say the school has since been cleaned and disinfected, and most of the students were back in the classroom this past week.

new jersey is still cleaning up from flooding and now they're dealing with even more rain. the state is under a floodwatch through this afternoon. look at what it looked like yesterday in hoboken. some businesses there did close down in preparation for that rising water. and up to 5 inches of rain could fall in some areas of new jersey today. new york is also dealing with rain. take a look at this video from inside a new york city subway station inundated with water yesterday. there's a huge city sewer line that does run the entire length of that platform. not that much rain, but it is the first full fall weekend here p rosemary talking about

we're taking a live look outside, yes, indeed. that is the golden gate bridge. it's the first full weekend of fall, and we are looking at a very big cooldown today. welcome back to mornings on 2. there's also some rain in the future. and we'll get that full forecast from rosemary in just about eight minutes. but first, controversy at cal over a student event scheduled for next week. ali rasmus is live at u clerk berkeley now with the bake sale that is bringing out strong reactions on campus. ali. >> reporter: that bake sale is organized by the uc berkeley college republicans. they created a facebook page on it and calling it the increased diversity bake sale. organizers say it's meant to be satirical and they've gotten a lot of response. here some people say they like the idea. but there are some comments on their wall here that are pretty critical of this bake sale.

and here's why. let's show you a look at the price list for the baked goods. the price you'll notice is different depending on a person's race or ethnicity. it will cost two dollars for white students to buy the baked goods. 1.50 for asians. a dollar for latinos. and 75 cents for african- americans. 25 cents for native americans. and then it's also gender based. the list says women get a 25- cent discount. the college republicans say they event is meant to be satirical and they're doing this to protest a bill on governor brown's desk. it would allow but not require the uc system to consider race and ethnicity in admissions. some students say they find this idea offensive. >> if i was a different race or me being white, i wouldn't wanted to go somewhere and be charged a different price. >> reducing the issue of racial issues down to cookies, ah, i

crews had to bring in planes to pick up water from a nearby reservoir and then dump it on that fire. fire burned 20 acres in a short amount of time. that area is notorious for fires that start up and move quickly. just in morning, the italian prosecutors asked an appeals court to increase her murder sentence. they want her to serve life in prison. she is sentenced to 26 years in prison. and her former boyfriend sentenced to 25. they were convicted in 2007 murder of knox's roommate and they both deny any wrongdoing. knox's attorney argued a review of dna evidence found that was unreliable and possibly contaminated p appeals verdict is expected within a man. a florida judge has doubled the amount of money casey anthony must repay to cover the cost of investigating the disappearance of her daughter. a jury acquitted her in july, but police and prosecutors say she lied repeatedly to authorities before the body was discovered. originally she was order today pay a little less than a
