police respond to the oakland hills where a bicyclist was killed. why the terrain may have played a role in this fatal crash. >> the list is out. which oakland schools are one step closer to being shut down. >> returning to american soil. when the uc graduates released from prison in iran will be arriving back in the u.s. your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. a bicyclist was struck and killed today in the east bay hills along a very foggy grizzly peak boulevard. lorraine blanco is in berkeley with details. >> reporter: you can just how steep and windy this road is out here and, of course, the fog does not help either. the man who was killed was riding downhill with the group of other bikers when he fell off his bike and a family driving uphill couldn't avoid him. oakland police closed down

grizzly peak road all afternoon while investigators interviewed witnesses and cleared the scene. police say the driver of a ford focus was heading westbound with his family to the petting zoo when a biker lost control. ear cyclists in the air -- other cyclists in the area say it's easy to take a tumble in these challenging hills. >> i have been back here for 40 years so i don't think it's dangerous. a lot of people are inexperienced don't really know the road that well or they, you know, go beyond their limit and think people make mistakes. >> i have hit the pavement up here myself. but, you know, it's road conditions, you know, bike e.r. >> reporter: there's many hazards. -- biker error. there's many has orders. >> reporter: drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash. the driver was not cited. grizzly peak is open now and moving very freely. reporting live in berkeley, lorraine blanco, ktvu, channel 2news. oakland police are trying to find witnesses in a deadly shooting that happened in broad daylight. investigators say a 19-year-old man was shot to death just

before noon today outside a home on hanna street near the emeryville city line. they say the victim was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. his name hasn't been released. nobody else was injured. at this hour, crews are mopping up from a fire at the newpark mall in newark. flames broke out this afternoon in empty retail space and the former mervyns and circuit city stores there on mowry avenue. the fire punched holes in the roofs sending smoke into the sky. firefighters put it out in 45 minutes. crews searched for a homeless person thought to be inside but did not find anyone. sunnyvale authorities have arrested a woman accused of killing a young boy and new information tonight says the boy was her son. the toddler was found dead inside an apartment on san aliso avenue yesterday afternoon. tonight the "mercury news" reports his mother, 27-year-old latisha certain in a was taken into custody. deputies found her on a mathilda avenue overpass above highway 101 yesterday shortly

after the boy's body was found. richmond police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a disabled man in his wheelchair. debora villavon spoke with the man's family ainge wind about how someone could drive away. >> reporter: you can see a sad shrine marks the spot. 52-year-old dave cox was well known and liked in this neighborhood. he had been in a wheelchair all his life, born with spina bifida. and he made a point of making friends everywhere. late yesterday he was returning to his home after coffee with a friend when a driver didn't see him and struck him from behind. cox was thrown from his wheelchair and dragged under the car several feet. that driver took off. cox grew up in the neighborhood the youngest of six siblings with many relatives in the east bay and they are heartbroken at losing the man they called the

anchor of their family. >> he is just the kind of guy that, if nobody else would listen to your silly problems or complaints, could you call him and dave was there and he would give you advice and be happy to do this. >> for the person who did this, they have to live with it. it was an accident whether they face up to it or not. >> reporter: cox's backpack from the back of his mangled wheelchair was recovered. he was an avid raiders and as fan who enjoyed going to games with his family. the car that hit him is described as an older model lexus, black or dark in color, two-door, with a spoiler and tinted windows and likely some front end damage. now, the family hopes that whoever hit dave cox comes forward as they grieve. it would give them some peace. live in richmond, debora villalon, ktvu, channel 2news. the last hour, oakland school official released the list of five elementary schools

they are now considering closing. that's actually down from a preliminary list of eight. the schools on the chopping block are lakeview, lazear, marshall, maxwell and santa fe. the school board will review this list on tuesday but a final decision on the school closures isn't expected until june 26. the closures will go into effect next school year. the two uc-berkeley graduates released from an iranian prison will be rushing to the -- returning to the u.s. tomorrow. josh fattal and shane bauer are scheduled to return tomorrow afternoon. the details of their arrival have not been released but the two men did talk about reuniting with their loved ones. >> just hours after we left prison, we were able to [ indiscernible ] we stayed up all night with our loved ones... and we watched the most beautiful sunset we have ever seen. >> before boarding their flights this evening in oman, the men said they were, quote, eager to go home. the pair was freed from prison this week after serving more

than two years behind bars. fattal and bauer along with sarah shourd were arrested while hiking in july 2009. for the latest on their journey back to the u.s., you can visit ktvu.com and click on the uc hikers tab. about a dozen people staged a nude-in this afternoon in san francisco. the nude-in at castro and 17th street was planned as a kickoff to tomorrow's folsom street fair. those taking part wanted to send a message though that being naked is legal and fun. >> everybody needs to feel free and experience life the way they feel that, you know, the good lord has put them here and we were born in our birthday suits and it feels pretty natural to be in your birthday suits. >> san francisco is considering one restriction, though, on public nudity. a proposed ordinance would require naked people to use a towel when they sit down. that protest in san francisco isn't the only one

raising eyebrows. coming up in 7 minutes, how a bake sale at uc-berkeley has also stirred up controversy. san francisco's soup kitchens are used to feeding a lot of people at once. but 10,000? we have a report on a free barbecue. >> reporter: this is the tenderloin district which saint anthony's has served since 1950. the clean-up is on now after a huge party celebrating the charity's 60-plus years of service. a rhythm and blues band had everybody including men of the cloth dancing at this celebration for saint anthony's. san francisco police chief greg suhr who worked the tenderloin for years joined the party. >> we love saint anthony's and all they do. >> reporter: they have helped the needy since 1950 so this was a birthday party in which it, what else, helped the needy. >> where would all these people eat if it wasn't for saint

anthony's? >> probably rolling over dead. >> reporter: some 250 volunteers many from bay area high schools handed out 10,000 barbecued chicken meals in just four hours. >> it is overwhelming but it's like, you know, people don't know where the next meal is coming from. we don't turn people away. >> reporter: mark ate with his 3-year-old grandson. hubbard says saint anthony's was here to help when he was homeless. >> a lot of critical issues down here but won't this, a lot of people would be in worse shape. >> reporter: the charity's executive director says just 10 years ago, they served around 2,000 meals a day. now that number is up to 3,000. >> here people really do share and so i think there's also still a lot of hope and promise. >> reporter: of course, they are always in need of volunteers and donation. the good news for saint anthony's is a new home is in its future with groundbreaking

next summer. live in san francisco, i'm john sasaki. a bay area youth summit today in san francisco focused on internet safety including cyberbullying. teens said it's hard for victims to go to parents or teachers as that may trigger even more bullying. also the kids caught "sexting" may become victims when their texts or pictures wind up on the internet. experts recommend that parents talk to their children about the risks and learn about tools such as facebook privacy settings and tags to protect information online. herman cain has scored a major upset winning the florida straw poll. mitt romney took 37% coming in third. rick perry came in second. meantime, michele bachmann who had won the iowa straw poll came in last. rick perry campaigned hard

to win the pole though including a speech this morning in orlando before flying to a michigan leadership conference. his moderate views may have heard him in florida. mitt romney did not actively court florida voters for the straw poll. he campaigned in michigan today and expects to win an informal poll there. romney has strong roots in michigan where his father was a popular governor during the 1960s. in his weekly address, president obama today stressed the urgency of reforming the country's education system. >> it's time to put our teachers back on the job. it's time to rebuild and modernize our schools and it's time to raise our standards, up our game and do everything it takes to prepare our children to succeed in the global economy. >> yesterday, the president announced reforms to the bush- era "no child left behind" act. that will give states more flexibility to meet high standards for teaching and learning. the president is set to

treats are the draw at jack london square in oakland this weekend. this is day 2 of the three-day eat real festival. promoters of the events say it's an opportunity for people who love food to get to meet the people who love to make food. the festival includes demonstration on backyard animal farming and flying knives bumpry butchery class. >> reporter: the price list at a bake sale is cooking up controversy. the college republicans plan to charge $2 for caucasian students, $1.50 per pastry for asian students, $1 for latino students and 75 cents for african-american students. native americans would pay 25 cents. officers with the college republicans say the bake sale is supposed to be a protest

college republicans. in order to receive student government funding clubs must follow rules. >> one of them says that we do not sponsor student groups that discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender. >> reporter: the bake sale scheduled to happen tuesday afternoon. she says other student organization have already planned counter demonstrations to the event. oakland high school showed off a new health clinic today part of other improvements to the campus at park and mcarthur boulevards. students can get all services including mental health and can get treated for sudden illness without having to go home. other district health centers will open soon at skyline high school and frick, elmhurst and west oakland middle schools. the chief executive of one of europe's largest banks resigned today in the wake of a scandal that cost the beige more than $2 billion. he stepped down as ceo of swiss- based ubs after a trader conducted improper trades and

lost $2.3 billion. that trader was arrested and charged with fraud and false accounting. he hopes his resignation would help the bank restore its reputation. authorities in say a shootdown in reno left one person dead. the violence broke out last night at the nugget in sparks, nevada during a biker festive. it started when one club and the hells angels came into the casino around the same time. two other people were hurt. nasa says a defunct satellite fell to earth. they don't know where it hit and may never know. someone in california reportedly captured the fractured satellite on video last night. nasa says pieces entered the atmosphere at 9:16 pacific time. the agency's best guess is that it fell into the northern pacific ocean. when functional, that satellite weighed 6 tons. the largest piece to survive

entry was estimated at 300- pound. a lot cooler weather out there. the fall leaves are bouncing around out there. let's check in with mark tamayo and see what's happening. >> the first weekend of fall features a significant drop-off in temperatures. we could soon be tracking a few rain showers. that's right. i said rain showers. right now low clouds and fog banked up at the shoreline. also extending into the bay from san francisco across the bay bridge, closer to oakland and berkeley, even a few high clouds heading well inland, as well. a look outside right now i can show you this it is dark and gloomy out there towards san francisco out in the distance. currently in the upper 50s. a few days ago san francisco was in the 80s. a big drop-off in temperatures over the past 24 hours. these were the highs from yesterday. remember santa rosa was 97, livermore 101 degrees. double-digit cooldown for today. livermore cooler by 25 degrees back down to the 70s this

afternoon. tonight, areas of fog, increasing cloud. tomorrow will increase the cloud cover once again an there's a chance of showers. the extended forecast, raindrops go away and more sunshine temperatures will be warming back up. you will see that coming up in the five-day forecast in a bit. overnight lows tomorrow morning most areas starting out sunday morning in the 50s. santa rosa 52. livermore 5. morgan hill in the upper 50s around 57. satellite-radar we had a few sprinkles through the bay area this morning. here's the weather system we have been tracking over the past few days. and it is approaching our coastline. this cold front will be fairly weak but still strong enough to generate clouds. showers likely up in the north bay especially up in sonoma county. a chance elsewhere and basically south of the golden gate bridge we are not expecting much and maybe just a few sprinkles by the time this system weakens and hits to the south bay. here's the updated cloud and rainfall forecast model. first thing tomorrow morning 8:00 highest chance in sonoma county also into the marin county shoreline, as well. and then by 11:00, late tomorrow morning, the few

to curb greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. >> hey hey, ho ho, fossil fuels have got to go! >> organizers of the rally and march said addressing climate change needs to be done now as the effects are being seen now. they point to the record number of billion-dollar natural disasters in the u.s. this year as evidence of the effects of a warming climate. the rally as justin herman plaza and market street was one of hundreds held around the world. some bay area veterans enjoyed a day on the water today on the 15th annual wheelchair regatta. members of the coast guard and bay area firefighters helped carry the veterans in their wheelchairs aboard the boats in oakland this morning. the organizers says it's one of the fewer events for bay area veterans. >> i started this because i felt that not enough people were paying attention to our veterans. there are a lot of public

cal loses its first game of the season 31-28. 5th-ranked stanford was idle today. they play ucla next said. san jose state owned the longest active losing streak in division one football. 13 games. they hosted new mexico state and how about the spartans first play from scrimmage? that's brandon rutley a 66-yard touchdown. he rushed for 209 yards and had two touchdown. 7-3 san jose state. spartans quarterback matt faulkner and ryan otten teamed up for two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. this is a big 64-yarder. san jose state beats the new mexico state aggies 34-21. they match last year's win total. two high-profile afc teams alabama and arkansas met in tuscaloosa. the tide takes a 3rd quarter
