and we are expecting a few sprinkles late morning and through the first half of the afternoon. can see clearing, partly cloudy skies. a split between now and then, we're going to be dry out and warming up for the week ahead and we'll detail your send in a few moments. it started with a nurse's strike and lockout and an investigating now after hospital officials say replacement nurse brought in from out of state made a medical error that took the life of an east bay patient. allie is live in oak lawith the story. >> reporter: of course, this is something the nurse's union is upset about. i got off of the phone with a representative about 15 machines ago and he tells me some of the union nurses plan to have a vig will here in front of the hospital -- vigil here at 7:00 in the evening in response to the patient's death. that is the medical center in oakland where police were called early side morning to investigate the -- saturday morning to investigate the death of a 66-year-old win. she was a cancer patient

receiving treatment here since july. one of the nurses who treated her made a medical error with that part's medication. according to a statement by police, they were told, quote, a patient had died after being administered a non-prescribed dosage of a medication that is known to be lethal in the manner in which it's to be administered. that is all police would say. an investigation is still ongoing and they would not say what kind of medication or how much was given. the nurse who gave that medication was replacement nurse. the regular nursing staff here and at more than 30 other california hospitals went on strike on thursday and in response it that strike, alpha -- alta base and other hospitals locked the nurses out for five days after the strike. the hospital has been use -- using temporary nurses since then. back out here live, there are -- right now, it's hard to see them but earlier this mother, we saw a half dozen security guards in front of the hospital as the lockout continues. you can see a seen there that valetes iss are closed -- valet

services are closed and they're keeping an eye as to who comes in and out. the police are conducting an investigation into this death. the district attorney's office will review the case tomorrow and there their is supposed to be an autopsy tomorrow. the nurse involved was questioned by detectives yesterday and, while we haven't been able to get a hold of any spokespersons from the hospital, they did tell the oakland tribune they're also the, the hospital's also conducting its own investigation into what went wrong. live in oakland,. president obama is headed to the west coast this morning. i want to show you a well picture from andrews air force base and i believe that is the president set to arrive. he will land down from that chopper and on to air force 1 to head to the west coast this morning. he is a busy -- has a busy schedule in front of him and is going to go to seattle first for two fund raisers and is going to make his way to the bay area for an 18-hour visit, including two fund razzers tonight, tomorrow the president

opposite. >> once bauer and fattal land in new york city, they will be take tone a hotel and that is where they will hold a news conference with the families this afternoon. and in sparks, nevada, they remain under a state of emergency this morning after a weekend shooting at a casino involving the rival motorcycle gags. it happened friday night at the nugget hotel casino. someone shot and killed the head of the san jose hells angels chapter. two other angels were wounded. the city declared that state of emergency following the violence saying more attacks could happen. >> when jeff you have people that enter our city with badpy thes, bad things will happen and that is what happened here. >> the shooting happened during the street vibrations motorcycle festival. as a result, the rest of the festival is cancelled. three people are now in cold frontde for the violence. >> a public memorial service will take place in repo for the victims of the deadly air raid crash. ref people were killed more than a week ago when the p-51

mustang crashed into the crowd. dozens more were injured. the service is going to take place at 6:00 tote. and -- tonight. on tuesday, the oakland school board will consider which schools to shut down at the end of the academic year. schools sleighted to close are lakeview, revere, marshal, maxwell park, and santa fe. the list was cut down from a preliminary list of eight possible closures. the superintendent is also recommending the expansion of keiser and buckholter elementary schools. the possible closures are expected to effect 960 students. the district said the move will save $2 million. tuesday's board meeting starts at 5:00 p.m. at the oakland high school feed or macarthur boulevard. a final decision on the closures is not expected until october 26th. the uc berkeley student government is holding a public meeting tonight in response to the controversy over a planned bake sale on campus. the increased diversity bake

sale is being held on tuesday by cal's college republicans group. according to the events facebook people, the group plans to charge $2 for caucasian students, $1.50 for asian students, $1 for latino students and 75 cents for african-americans. the college republican said the back sale is a symbolec protest against a bill that would allow the uc system to consider race and ethnicity in the admission's process. tonight's meeting is at 6:00 in escheelman hall. right now, we want to go back to andrews air force base. there is president obama. he got off of marine one and headed to air force one and getting ready for the trip here to the west coast this morning. there he is boarding the plane and he's going to first stop in seattle for two fund raisers there and then he's going to make his way here to the bay area. his visit here will be 18 hourslong. there he goes, given the last wave before getting on bord and he will have two fund raisers

street and mariposa. the firefighters managed to quickly get control of the situation. the cause is under investigation. this morning, one woman was taken to the hospital after a house fire in san bruno. firefighters responded to a home on the 100 block of linden street after midnight. when they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the seg story. residents were evacuated and the fire was knocked down in 30 minutes. the fire officials say yet appears to be an electrical fire that started in the attic. the damage is estimated at $100,000. goring to you. we have an early season storm on the way -- good morning to you. we have an early season storm on the way. a few sprinkles over the bay area a possibility, especially the north bay and looking at the winds, generally light out there and looking at a southwesterly breeze with this system approaching. you can see the widespread gray and not seeing the rain just yet and that is on the way. 61 degrees right now in san francisco; 66 in oakland. widespread 60s outside of our door. a few degrees warmer than yesterday in most cases, livermore and areas in concord, actually, a tad cooler than

in annual meetings for the international monetary fund and the world bank. this is video that shows attendees taking the photo yesterday. the treasury secretary timny geithner is attending and he is calling on finance officials to take bold action to deal with the european debt crisis saying it could grow more severe and spread around the world. the usda is recalling 40,000 pounds of beef because it might be contaminated with e. coli. it was produced by palo duro meet in amarillo, texas, and shifted to -- shipped to warehouses in georgia. it was then to be sent to schools in georgia but most of the beef never left the warehouses. the contaminated beef may have gotten mixed in with commercial productions du -- products due to a sample tracking error. there are no reports of illnesses related to the beef. farmers in the midwest are on alert after a string of biggest -- peg thefts. hundreds of pigs were stolen from flee 3 farms in iowa and minnesota. the stolen pigs weigh in at 200

mostly gray skies around the region and heading to the last day for the eat real fest there at jack london square, maybe a sprinkle around 91:00. the satellite radar is showing you that most of the moisture remains over northern california but the front is beginning to sweep through our area of the north bay. by 8, 9:00, a few sprinkles expected over parts of the north bay, sliding south as we progress through the morning hours and afternoon. through about 9:00, the temperatures in the 50s and low 60s, sleet i warmer than yesterday. if you need to be outdoors early, you may notice it's not bad. the temperatures in the upper 50s along the coast line and the lunch hour, widespread, low and mid-60s for the bay area and the inland locations and the afternoon. take a look at the highs, upper 50s for the coast and mid-70s inland. wow, what a change. a couple of days there. we're expecting late clearing. once the system passes through, partly cloudy skies and that should feel good. we warm back up pretty fast, as early as tomorrow into the low

80s and the valley locations, look at 92 by mid-week on wednesday and along the coast line, upper 60s, low 70s and a good looking forecast as we move through the first half of the workweek. back to you. 7:26. several fires near denver are blamed on a 13-year-old girl and police say she set them in an attempt to kill her entire family. the fires broke out in april in jefferson county. no one was hurt but the family home with the 13-year-old did burn to the ground and firefighters suspected arson and didn't have enough evidence until police say the girl set a new fire this past week outside of her family's new home. >> she needs help, really does. especially at 13 setting a fire and thinking of homicide and in general. >> reporter: the 13-year-old is now facing attempted murder, arson and other charges. 92. a local bail bondsman, the teacher at the center of it all and why he claims. >> why he's being sensorred. 92. and a patient dies at a bay area hospital after given the

i'm mike nieback. >> i'm claudia wong. a number of investigations are underway this morning. allie rasmus has more on the investigation. >> reporter: behind us is the alta based summit until medical center. this is where police were called to investigate the death of a 66-year-old woman. she was a cancer patient and oakland police say one of the nurses here made a medical error with that patient's medication. according to a statement by policings they were told, quote, a patient had died after being administered a non- restrictioned dose am of a medication known to be lethal and the manner in which it was administered. police wouldn't say what that medication was. the nurse who gave that medication was a replacement nurse. the regular nursing staff here and at more than 30 other california hospitals went on strike on thursday and in response, alta base and other hospitals looked the nurses out for five days and have been

using temporary nurses since then. a spokesman said that they're concerned about the qualifications of the temporary nurses and have askd the california department of public health to step in. >> we asked them on in -- to come in to the hospitals and conduct an investigation as to whether the hospitals, whether the replacement r.n.'s they were using have demonstrated competency in the areas where they're working and also the appropriate cert education in the areas they're working. >> reporter: the lockout continues and this morning, we could's say -- see a half dozen community guards. police are conducting an investigation into the part's death and the nurse was questioned by detectives. we have not yet reached a spokesperson from the hospital. and mean while, the nurse's union said they're planning to have a vigil here in front of the alta base medical center at 7:00 this evening in response to the part's death over the

grizzly peak boulevard. the cycle of the was riding downhill with the group on the steep and winding road when he lost control and fell off into the path of an oncoming car and the driver is cooperating. the victim is a 53-year-old man and his name has not been released of the. >> a large fire in newark at a vacant strain mall was likely started by squatters. the flames started yesterday across from the new park mall. the fire burned holesbo the -- into the roof. they were able to put it out in 35 minutes. the fire probably started by squatters and did not find anyone inside that building. back in march, there was another fire at that same complex. that, too, was started by homeless people liveing in that empty building. the complex is scheduled to be torn up to. and -- torn down. the saint anthony -- is sell bratting a milestone this

weekend. the organization celebrated the 60th anniversary yesterday and september anthony's has helped the city's needy since 1950s andy ising over 37 meals to the hungry and homeless. yesterday, 250 volunteers had out 10,000 barbeque chicken meals in four hours. >> there are a lot of critical issues and a lot of people would be -- [ indiscernible ] >> and 10 years ago, they served around 10,000 meals a day and that is up to 3,000 saint anthony's will have a new facility. the groundbreaking is set for next summer. in 2013, a new span of the bridge should open. one controversy doesn't seem to be dieing down. here's a live look outside at the bay bridge. it opened in 1936, putting many americans to work during the great depression. the same can't be said for the

hospital. ktvu's allie rasmus has more on the medical error officials say caused the death. >> reporter: according to oakland police and alpha baits, the error was made by a temporary nurse who was brought in to fill in during a strike and lockout here in oakland. it happened early saturday morning, when police were called to the hospital to investigate the deaths. the woman was a 66-year-old cancer patient who was receiving treatment here since july. according to the statement by police, police were told the woman had died after being administered a nonstory prescribed dose am of a med cage known to be lethal. and that is all police would say about what happened at this point. they're still investigating the death. they wouldn't say what type of medication was involved or how much. again, the nurse who administered the medication was replacement nurse. the regular nursing staff here at alta baits and more than 30 other california hospitals went on stroke on thursday.

in response to the strike, alta- based and other hospitals locked the nurses out for five days. the hospital has been using temporary nurses since then. a spokesman said the union asked the state department of public health to investigate conditions at this hospital and at alta baits in berkley j. we were concerned that many of the nurses they brought in did not have demonstrated competency to work in the areas where they worked, to use the equipmentthy used. we were concerned that they were using nurses not appropriately certified to protect the patients that they were caring for. >> reporter: and as early as this morning issue week see several security guards out in front of the medical center as the lockout continues through monday. now, police are conducting an investigation. the nurse was questioned by detectives. we have not yet been able to get a hold of a spokesperson from alpha baits summit medical center. i went in a short time ago to ask the security guard if the spokesperson was around, if i could get in touch with them.

asked the california department of health to step in and investigate conditions here in oakland and at alta bias in berkeley. the patient who was given the failed dose of medication was getting treat here at the alta base medical center. she was a 66-year-old cancer patient who was here since july. according to a statement by police, they were told, quote, the woman died after being administered a non-prescribed dose am of a medication known to be -- dosage of a medication known to be lethal. that is all police would say at this point. they would not say what type of medication was used or how much. the nurse who administered the medication was temporary nurse and that is because the regular nursing staff here went on strike on thursday. at that strike, after the strike, alta-based -- alta based locked the nurses out for five days and that is ongoing now. the hospital has been using replacement nurses since thursday. the nurse's union is upset about this and say the replacement nurses are not qualified and that is why they have asked the california

about the fatal crash in menlo park we told you about earlier on mornings on 2. the chp tells us it was caused by a hit-and- run driver. it happened on southbound 101, south of marsh road after 530time this morning. the chp said the victim's car was rear ended by the older model pickup truck. the victim stopped in the center lane and was struck by a taxi cab. the pickup truck took off and investigators are looking for the driver. we should motion the chp had hoped to have that roadway back open by 8 and we did just check in with them and all southbound lanes many shut do you. >> in nepal, two americans are among the dead after a plane contrarying tourists in mount everest crashed while trying to land. all 19 people on board were killed. a witness said the plane hit the roof of the house in the village and broke into several pieces. no one on the ground was killed. it was foggy and visibility was very low in that area. the plane was returning from a mountain flight that took passengers to view mount everest and other peaks.

a driver travelling up the hill then hit the man. that driver was not soothed. oakland -- not cited. oakland police are looking for witnesses to a deadly shooting. 's man was found before noon yesterday with multiple gun shot wounds and died at the scene. no arrests were made. five schools in oceanland are at risk of being closed. lakeview, revere, marshal, maxwell park and santa fe are the schools that will go into effect to close at the end of the school year. the list of five was cut down from a preliminary list of -- preliminary list of eight possible school closures. a final decision on the school closures is expected late next month. and it's believed in a large fire in a vacant strip mall in newark was started by squatters. it started yesterday at the former mennens and circuit city. the fire burned holes in the roof and sinning plumes into the sky. the firefighters put that out about 45 minutes.
