an east bay neighborhood this afternoon. crews replacing a pipe dover interest had it purge some of the gas before installing the new pipe. you can see the gas escaping that. that caused some residents to worry about a possible gas leak. to be cautious, fire crews evacuated some fleish residents. nobody was in danger and a pg&e spokesperson says the residents were notified of what type of work was planned. police have beefeddum patrols in sparks, nevada. they say that the president of the hell's angels, pettigrew was shot to death in john asquag casino were shot. they were in town for the biker phoenix. that motorcycle rally was canceled and the mayor declared a state of emergency.

tonight an investigation is underway after a patient's death of an oakland hospital. kutv's allie rasmus with more on the medical error that officials say caused the death and how a labor strike and lockout may have played role. >> reporter: these nurses work in the oncology unit at alta bates center in oakland. >> we get to know our patients and they billion pour family. >> reporter: it was in that unit that police say a 66-year- old woman died early saturday morning because of a medical mistake. >> these nurses weren't there when it happened. they haven't been on the job since thursday. they went on strike and were locked out by the hospital. alta bates spokesperson says when the nurses went on strike they had no choice, but to hire 500 replacement nurses for a minimum of five days. the hospital admits it was one of those temporary nurses that made the fatal error. >> as soon as this incident occurred we notified the corner's county coroner's office and the state of california. >> reporter: they won't explain

exactly what happened, but "a non-prescribed dosage of a medication was administered." this was gross incompetence. >> just across the street from where the nurses spoke, security guards stood in front of the hospital ebtrance. this lockout is supposed to last until tuesday. the california nurses association says it's asked the state department of health to investigate conditions at the hospital during the lockout. >> we were concerned that this were using nurses who were not appropriately certified, to protect the patients that they were caring for. >> all of the safety issues, all of the qualifications, all of the training that is necessary for a nurse to provide care in a medical center were met by all of our registry nurses when came here. >> reporter: hospital's vice president of medical affairs says that the nurse who made the mistake is no longer work here and along with the police investigation, alta bates is doing its own internal investigation of what went wrong. in equality, allie rasmus. highway patrol is asking for help in trying to find eye pickup truck involved in a

deadly hit-and-run crash today menlo park. it happened about 5 didn't 40 on southbound highway 101 south of mash road. a red honda civic was rear-end bit pick-up truck that. truck fled and the honda was hit again by a taxi cab. the driver of the honda was killed. the highway patrol only describes the pickup as a 1960s or 1970's model. police say a 67-year-old man was dragged 300 feet and unconscious with they arrived at scene. it happened about 5:00 a.m. at east homestead road and quince avenue. police believe as we crossing homestead. police say they don't have a vehicle description, but believe the vehicle has damage to its front-end and possibly a broken windshield. meanwhile authorities in richmond are trying to find the driver in a hit-and-run that also killed a man in a

wheelchair. 52-year-old dave cox was struck and killed around 6:00 friday night near 34th and esmond avenue. the car is described as something like this, an older model, dash-colored lexus, sedan and tinted windows and spoiler. the light rains with a factor in the rollover crash in the north bay. the highway patrol says the driver lost control on the southbound highway 101 kentor to highway 12. nobody was injured. >> it's the first rain of the season, so the roads are very slick, from the oil comes up to the surface. so if everybody would slow down today, definitelies at least 10- 15 miles under the speed limit. >> that chp overview says that they rosponded to several accidents in the area today. this is what it looked like on the san francisco side of the golden gate bridge around

a series of fundraising events. ken, what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: i can see air force one coming to a stop at moffett field now a federal airfield, which is an appropriate place for the president to arrive. he is going to two fundraising events tonight and then tomorrow, he will have a town hall meeting tomorrow. he is running late. ken pritchett is there and tell us what is happening at moffett? >> reporter: as you can see air force one just touched down. the air force one was supposed to arrive at 4:55 and obviously he is running late. this is part of the president's three-day, three-state tour of western states. his tenth stop here in california.

he started this tour this morning in seattle, washington for a pair of fundraisers there. those events took a little longer than expected, which is why air force one is arriving at moffett field a little late. he will be greeted once he pulled up by the director of ames research and mayors. from moffett field the press will get into a motorcade and he is on eye tight schedule that startses with two major fundraisers in the bay area. a fundraiser started at:00, which the president will be late for that. fundraiser will take place a reception at the home of jon thompson, champion of the largest software security maker. a second fundraiser a dinner is set at the home of facebook executive is anberg tickets set for $35,800.

tomorrow at 11:00 the president has a town hall meeting focused on jobs. after that town hall, the president will leave the bay area from moffett field at around 12:25. now that lincolnton town hall meeting is about jobs. his jobs proposal has received luck warm recession from congressional democrats. after the town hall the president will leave moffett field and fly to san diego and then to l.a. for more fundraising before he leaves california for a final stop on this tour in colorado. and obviously it's getting a little noisier here as air force one comes up before the podium. there is say small gather, invitees of the secret service

and normally the president would get off the plane and meet-and-greet with the dignitaries and run over and shake a few hands with the crowd that is here to see him. he is running late and it will be interesting to see what he does. i this it's asafe bet once they bring the stairs to the plane, since he is running late, he will be off the plane in a matter of minutes, down the tarmac and into the motorcade and off to woodside for that fundraiser. >> ken, always amazing seeing that boeing 747 coming into the bay area. we have seen the president come to the bay area for several trips and for the solyndra announcement after that company announced layoff. we're awaiting the president to come out shortly from moffett field. we have seen him visit, but we haven't seen him come into moffett field. >> well, well it's a very convenient place for the

president to arrive, because it is an airfield that is not open to the public. so by landing at moffett instead of say san josi international or san francisco international, it's not going to affect any commercial air traffic, or cause any potential delays there. so people who are taking their normal flights are probably grateful that the president is landing at moffett instead of their local airport. as you can see, the ladder is making its way over to the plane, where the president will be coming out. this is important and ken pritchett, jump in here any time, for the president, because we don't know who the republican nominee is. that will be some time later, but there is a very aggressive campaign that is already well underway and the president has been speaking out more aggressively in recent days about republicans in congress and the house in particular as he struggles to come up with ways to get the economy on

foot. he has been trying to put forth proposals that have been shot down by republicans, especially tea party members in the house. what the president is doing here is trying to energize his democratic base as well as raise a lot of money, which for what is sure to be a very bruising political 2012 campaign. >> reporter: you talked about aggressive, ken, his campaign manager said his campaign for re-election, they hope to raise $1 billion for his re-election coffers. that is obviously a significant chunk of money and he will find a lot of that money in california. ways talking to the state representative for the state republican party chairman, at the convention just last week and he said for their candidates, for their candidates for the republican candidates, 20% of the money raised nationally for their candidates is raised in california. so you can only imagine how much of the money this they will be seek on a national

scale will come from california. of course, the president is also coming it a state where virtually all the democrats and even the republicans will see that he will win california. that is their feeling now. of course, things could change between now and a year from november. that is their feeling now, but the question is how strong will he win? if it doesn't pull in a lot of support, perhaps just enough to win california? what will that mean for some of the other democratic candidates on the ticket? will there be enough democrats to support the propositions that may be on the ballot during the general election? there are a lot of open questions on the upcoming election and what we'll see a year from now in november. in fact, if you look at recent polling, field poll conducted in california, he still has a majority of support in terms of the president's job approval rating among california democrats, but if you take california voters as a whole, his support, the president's support, even here in

california has declined significantly as we have seen near double-digit unemployment on a nationwide basis. 9% range now. so the president, while is he coming here to fundraise and we'll likely see him do that several more times between now and election day, well he is coming here to fundraise, as you said. he does have some work to do, even here in california. >> and ken, you are right. any political analyst will say the bay area, the key spot, california for fundraising. he wanted to comment that we're waiting for the president to come out of air force one that justlanted at moffett field. some of the dignitaries. san josi mayor reed there. the president corp. that always travels with the president on air force one.
