alaska. the extended outlook shows another system moving in later in the week. a little fog, cloud and sun and breezy. it's a chilly warmer. temperatures 60s, 70s to some low 80s. >> for most of the east bay traffic we're doing pretty well. highway 4 you can see things are doing well here. however, we have a big problem on interstate 880. there's a full freeway closure northbound interstate 880. because of police activity. at the very bottom of your screen you can see the traffic is not getting by. looks like it's not getting by in either direction. let's go live to our reporter on the scene who is near this incident and it can tell us more. >> reporter: thank you. as a matter of fact, i was just talking to the chp on the phone to ask whether or not this was over. we've seen a lot of activity over the past few minutes. officers walking up to the van, they don't -- their stances

don't appear to be very defensive. this is right across the street from the coliseum complex. you see there's a canine out there right now. we shot this video tape about a half hour ago. we were actually parallel to this van about 4:00 this morning. we didn't see anybody inside the van, but several times during our station there we did hear loud pops. it was as if -- it didn't sound like gun fire though. it might have been something less lethal than gun fire. perhaps police were shooting out the windows. when i talked to chp earlier they said this is a possible stolen vehicle. we have not seen anybody get out of the van. we've seen police around the van since we got here around 4:00. we first heard about it around 3:45. we're going to stay here until we find out what the result is of what's happening out here on 880 but if you're going northbound, just don't do that on 880 right now.

the highway is blocked at the coliseum. overnight we learned one american is dead and another injured after a shooting inside a u.s. government building in afghanistan. it happened last night at the cia office in kabul. now, tus embassy is not saying much, only that an afghan employee of the u.s. government opened fire and hit the two americans. the afghan employee died but it's not clear yet how. president obama is making up in the bay area this morning. air force one arrived in mount view just after 5:30 yesterday evening. now, the president's motorcade then departed for two fund raisers. today he'll attend a town hall meeting hosted by link. well, those two fund raisers president obama attended brought in millions of dollars to his

re-election campaign. our camera got a glifrpgs of mr. obama's motorcade as it rolled into the $12 million estate of john thompson. now, no press was allowed inside, but guests paid $2500 to attend the reception. the president also spoke about his new jobs plan now up for debate in congress. >> i thought it was fabulous. i thought the president was excellent tonight in clearly making his case of why we need four more years of obama. now we have learned that pop star lady ga ga was at that second fund raiser. she was among the estimated 75 guests who paid more than $35,000 to attend. lady ga ga said last week that she wanted to meet with the president to discuss her concerns about bullying. it's not known if the two had that discussion last night. now, we do have complete coverage of the president's bay

area visit right here on ktvu morning news and our website. just click on the bay area news tab. multiple investigations are now underway at alta bates medical center in oakland after a patient died after an apparent medical error. a 66-year-old woman died early saturday morning after a nurse gave a nonprescribed dosage of medication. now, the hospital admits a replacement nurse made that fatal error. they hired 500 temporary nurses on five-day contracts during last thursday's one-day strike. >> i was there that day ready to work, and they wouldn't let me in. i felt like i could have prevented this from occurring. >> we're open to look at every aspect of this but we're very confident that our processes for hiring replacement workers is a rigorous process. >> the hospital says the nurse

who made the mistake is no longer working at alta bates. the lockout is set to end tomorrow. the family of a santa rosa man who was found dead in a hospital parking lot wants access to his medical records and surveillance video. now, last monday an ambulance took 49-year-old michael torres to santa rosa memorial hospital. he was seen by doctors and released. but a few hours later he was found dead on hospital property. an investigation continues but family members tell the press democrat that early autopsy results show he could have died from pneumonia or swell fromming the arteries and heart. we're now learning what life was like for two berkeley graduate who is spent more than 2 years in an iranian prison. they flew to the united states yesterday, four days after their release. now, the men were jailed for 781 days on spying allegations. much of that time they say was spent in isolation with limited

phone calls and one short visit from their mothers. >> we had to go on hunger strike repeatedly just to receive leathers from our loved ones. many times, too many times, we heard the screams of other prisoners being beaten and there was nothing we could do to help . >> the men say the only reason they were held is because they are americans and not because they might have strayed across the iran iraq border. a shooting involving an oakland police officer is under investigation this morning. police say an officer shot and killed an armed man after a struggle yesterday. just after 5:00 last night officers stopped two men in a car near 99th avenue and cherry street. police say the passenger in the car ran away and officers chased after him on foot. they say there was a struggle and the man was shot after he threatened officers with a gun. now, police say the man's gun was found at the scene but they are still looking for the driver

of the car. oakland police have identified a man killed during a shooting in broad daylight. police say 20-year-old roberto guzman was working on his car saturday morning when a man shot him point blank. police tell the oakland tribune that they do have a motive in the case, but they are not releasing details. no arrests have been made. president of the san jose hells angels chapter is dead after a fight between two motorcycle gangs in nevada. we'll have more including why the incident prompted a state of emergency in an entire city. well cub cakes and cookies are continuing to cause a political controversy on the berkeley campus. they held an emergency meeting last night to discuss actions by the two groups. the group wants to sell baked

groups different prices based on race. >> we don't feel anybody should be treated differently because of the color of our skin and the purpose of our event is to highlight why that is so outray yous. the student senate pas resolution against disrespectful speech and they say they won't actually charge prices based on sex and race but will still have signs with the different pricing. police in two bay area cities are investigating two hit and run crashes where wheelchair bound moan were killed. the latest one happened in santa clara. a 67-year-old man in a wheelchair was crossing east homestead road near quince avenue around 1:00 yesterday morn whenning a car hit him. the man was dragged 300 feet and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. police do not have a description of the vehicle but say it should have significant front end

damage and possibly a broken windshield. in richmond police are looking for the driver of a veeng similar to the one we're showing you here. it is an older model dark colored lexus, 2-door sedan with tinted windows and a rear spoiler. now, police say on friday the driver hit and killed 52-year-old david cox who was also in a wheelchair. cox's family tell us here that on saturday night that they want the driver -- that happened saturday night that they want the driver to turn themselves in. a scheduled natural gas purge by pg and e prompted an evacuation of an east bay neighborhood. fire crews evacuated about 50 homes before they learned the release was a scheduled project. crews were replacing a pipe on dover street in pittsburgh and had to purge some of the gas before installing the new pipe. but some people worried it might be a gas leak and the noise from the purge was heard for more than a mile away. >> one of the pittsburgh police

officer said he could hear the noise when he stepped out of the pittsburgh pd office so it was quite a loud noise. >> pg and e spokesman says neighbors were notified of the planned work. the two minor earthquakes shook the bay area this weekend. the first hit at 8:08 last night just about 8 miles northeast of san leandro. it measured the magnitude 3.5. callers as far away as dublin said they felt the shaking but did not experience any damage. the second quake hit three minutes later about 3 miles off san francisco ocean beach. they recorded that one at 2.3. all right. right now it is 4:40. i want to go back over to sal to check in on traffic this morning. >> we're still talking about interstate 880 this morning. i want to show you several pictures that we have of the scene. these are live pictures from one of our crews that's stuck in

traffic just a little bit away from the police standoff near the o dot coliseum. you can see people are just at a stand still here. big rigs, the whole thing and just people in their cars. some people may even get out although it is early in the morning, but you can see that this is a huge problem for interstate 880. it is absolutely shut down. this is another view closer to the actual scene where police have stopped a van. a van was allegedly stolen and now up to the center divide. apparently this situation is still ongoing. we have several reporters -- we have two reporters on the scene and here it is on the map so what you need to do is you need to use interstate 580 instead. by the way, big rigs are temporarily allowed on 580. that's not usually the case, but they will be allowed on 580 until this is resolved. let's go to steve. >> all right. thank you. well, morning fog but once it

gets wiped out and it will, very chilly road. sunshine breezy warmer conditions after yesterday's first rain of the season. it wasn't much but high pressure is going to build in and we'll see a little jump. tomorrow i think yiel notice it. lots of sunshine, warm weather and i think with a northerly breeze we'll see some upper 80s to 90s by tuesday. there goes our system sliding right on by. held together and did what it was supposed to. 46 at the napa airport. fairfield, liver moore at 53. a few lo clouds around in san jose at 55. so there are some that's really cool. not much of a breeze, expect that to turn more northerly later on so a slight wet westerly con point to that. another system that's digging down into the gulf of alaska. that's going to ride up over the

ridge of high pressure but the end of the week things could be interesting again. more sunny side up and warmer today and tomorrow. after some morning fog it will be a little warmer. 60s, 70s and mid to upper 70s and a few very low 80s but if that wind kicks in soon enough we'll see a better warmup. lots of sunshine into thursday. the big nose is by the end of the week our forecast models are saying we had one rain, how about a second one? looks like it will come in on sunday if things continue to come in. i'm looking out 7 days. >> and you are always right. >> don't say that. it's a long way off but that's the way it's looking. police are looking for the driver responsible for a fatal crash on highway 101. the cph says 37-year-old jack lynn thompson was killed when her red honda civic was rear ended by a pickup truck. it happened early saturday morning just south of marsh road. authoritys say that truck drove

off and the honda was hit again by a taxi cab. witnesses say it was a 1960s or 70s model pickup truck that hit the civic. anyone with information is asked to call the highway patrol. hundreds of people gathered to honor the 11 people who died at the ree know air races. many signed a banner to let the 70 people injured know that they are also not being forgotten. the mayor helped dedicate an oak tree in a neighborhood park during a weekend memorial. police in sparks, nevada remain on alert following a fatal shooting of a bay area hells angels leader. he was killed inside the nugget casino on friday night. the deadly gun fire came during a brawl between the hells angels and their rival motorcycle club. two members of the rival club were wounded. police have made one arrest and expect to make more. now, a state of emergency was declared to make it easier for assistance in the case of any

more violence. people in one county in ken cubing ki are on alert after a series of pipe bombs were discovered in mailboxs. six explosive devices have been found since friday. police say one of the bombs which was found yesterday exploded inside the mailbox. another bomb was found by a family who hadn't checked their mail in a few days. investigators believe the incidents are random acts of vand. >> they're just copper piping which is about maybe 12 inches long with a wick. you know, we don't know what's in them. we don't know if it's just gunpowder or what. >> police believe the pipe bombs are homemade. luckily no one has been hurt. in mesa republican state prison are urging inmates to

stop the hunger strike. it's in protest of the current conditions of the maximum security prison. a plan to open a village to have hundreds of sex offenders in florida is drawing criticism this morning. a company called sex offender solutions has leased a facility in central florida and say they're ready to start moving in nearly 300 offenders been the next 2 to 3 months. the organization says they will provide monitoring, counseling and transportation and will be able to keep the phoneders away from children, but parents have started an online petition to try to stop the village. >> there's kids everywhere and they just don't need to be around any sex offenders, much less a large quantity of them. >> they have an atmosphere to where they're not looking out the window at kids in a park. they over not a mile away from your school. they're not next door -- you don't have to worry about if your kid's out on a bicycle. >> sex offender solutions hopes to create similar sex offender

villages in florida and eventually here in california. in news of the world this morning 6 men are set to appear in a london court on terrorism charges. three of them are charged with plotting suicide bombings in britain. investigators say two of the men traveled to pakistan for terrorism training. the 7th man who was also arrested last week is still being quest. saudi arabia's king is giving women the right to vote and run for elections for the first time. the announcement is a big step forward for women who live in the conservative kingdom. they're still not allowed to drive or leave the country without permission from a male guardian. a 5-year-old boy is back safe with his family after a mixup at his school. 5-year-old conner campbell's parents always pick him up from school but last thursday his

substitute teacher mistakenly put him on a school bus. the boy was reunited with his parents after some good samaritans spotted him and called authoritys. >> he's been having nightmares two nights in a row, screaming, not able to sleep. it's horrible. >> conner's parents say he was dropped off about two miles away from home in a rural area and that he wandered around for two hours. the school is now reviewing its safety procedures. convict sentenced to prison terms on alka traz schemed of ways to get off the island. now the golden gate national recreation area are thinking about hosting people who might want to spend the night there. other ideas include adding concession stands and opening up new parts of the island. >> if it's accessible, i say why not? >> i'm a purist. you know, being in the navy i like the tradition and once it

obviously causing big traffic problems. i'll tell you the best way to get around. a church in nishg is helping to stimulate the economy by giving away $30,000 to its members. people were asked to take from the collection basket this sunday instead of donating to it. the buckets filled with envelopes of 10, 20 or $50 bills were passed around. the hope is that the $30,000 will make its way out into the community. we usually give to church. church doesn't tend to give to us back. >> it's not throw away. it's not a waste. we really believe that their creative talents are going to use it to benefit the entire neighborhood. >> the church plans to donate an additional $60,000 to various projects including helping communities with flood

recovery. an unemployed woman in north carolina is taking an unusual approach to get her resume into people's hands. >> whatever it takes i'm going to do it to get a job. >> she is putting resumes inside helium filled balloons and releasing them. now, she says she's been looking for work for nearly a year and she sends out 100 resumes a week the regular way but she says for all of her efforts she hasn't gotten a single interview. so she hopes that's about to change. she has already received e-mails from potential employers who have found the balloons. 4:53 is the time. sal, i think employers probably appreciate a unique approach. she's a go-getter. >> think outside of the box there. good morning, everybody. i like that double box. all right. let's go out and talk about what the problem is here on interstate 880 north and southbound. there's a police standoff on the freeway in front of the

coliseum. we've seen some activity or nonactivity if you will. police pulled over a van they believed was stolen and they have a person inside. that person has not been responsive to officers. they have stopped interstate 880 in both directions. i want to show you a look at it from the coliseum camera. you can see this big empty spot in the freeway between high street and the coliseum. that's just not getting through. use 580 as the alternate. put it up on the maps here, you can see that the -- we'll just do this here right on the air. why don't we go to telestraight here. 5080 is much better than 880. it's just not worth getting stuck in traffic here. 580 is in great shape and we'll let you know as soon as this reopens. let's go to steve. >> hold on, sal. the person is still in the van? did you say that? >> that's right. >> okay, pam. that's confirmed. we do have a little bit of patchy fog but in the last half

hour it's decreasing so mainly clear and chilly here in the morning. very cool for some. 40s and i'm taking a look, see if i can find something colder than 46. i should have that in about 10 or 15 minutes. there's some cool lows around. fairfield 53. not much of a breeze. just a little hint of an on shore wind but i think that will turn a little more northerly later on today. one system went through. i tell you, i look for things like this. did it come in and then stay together and then fall apart or what? it stayed together. gave us our first light rain. might be a stronger one coming down the pipeline later in the week. warm earl weather starting a little bit today, more so tomorrow. morning fog, patchy. then sunshine and breezy and warmer as our system slides off. but warmer weather kicks in and i think by tuesday we'll have some upper 80s to low 90s to get that north wind. even the coast looks good. not kidding. fog, sun, but a lot of sun
