we'll find out more and the closure was there for a long time. we do have some reaction for people who are stuck in that. that's coming up. let's move along and take a look at the southbound 680 freeway that traffic looks good. 6:01, let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. >> we're still following the developing news in oakland. we have been telling about a police stand off in oakland. it is over now and the police have not found the man they were looking for. we also just found out as you're looking at these live pictures, they have just reopened a portion of the sowndbound side of interstate 880. it has reopened. the chp tells us they pulled over a van earlier this morning. the driver refused to get out. they're now trying to figure out if the driver may still be in the van and who he mite be. that part of the investigation is still going on. ktvu is there on the scene and he'll have more details later. now, ktvu has talked to some of

the driver whose have been stuck in all of that traffic. so what are they saying, alley? >> about 3:45, we got stuck in the traffic jam as well. we're on our way to a completely different story, but we ended up getting stuck with even else. in the last five minutes, the chp has reopened the southbound lanes of 880 and you can see these drivers are definitely in a hurry to get going after that two-hour traffic jam. as we show you the other side of the freeway, though, it appears the northbound section of 880, and that is still shut down. i have been told by my colleague that this situation that led to this shut down to begin with has been ended, but we don't know yet exactly why the northbound lanes of 880 are still closed down. earlier this morning during the traffic jam, we had a chance to talk to some of the drivers about what they thought about this whole mess.

they said even though they knew this was a public safety issue, this shut down was still a big inconvenience. >> and that is a good thing they stopped us from going through there because if somebody is armed, you don't want to be in their way trying to shoot you. and i decided to wait. >> and for public safety, you have to do something. but it just -- it is annoying. and those two drivers are now well on their way. they were stuck on the southbound side of 880. as you can see, traffic is moving just as normal on that side of the freeway. northbound traffic still appears to be shut down. we don't know why. we don't know how much longer traffic is going to be shut down on the northbound side. at least if you're heading south on 80, and we're on the exit in oakland, if you're going south from here, you shouldn't have any problems. ktvu channel 2 news. president obama is waking

up in the bay area this monday morning, and ktvu is in mountain view with how this visit is part policy, part politics. that's right. several block aids have been put up and there are already police patrols. they have also cordoned off the section of this parking lot. this is where a coffee shop is. no telling if the president will be receiving his morning coffee here. he will need his emergency for his hour-long speech which will be held across the street here at the computer history museum. he landed last night and then attended two fundraisers back- to-back. the first, a $2,5-a-plate afire at the estate of john thompson and then a bash at the home of facebook executive cheryl sandberg. despite is supporting his own job, he is here to push his jobs plan. we spoke the a man who attended one of the fundraisers stoo. his tone was upbet and positive and he knows he has to fight for what he believes in and for what i think a lot of people

believe in. >> reporter: but obama does have his critics. >> and more and more people that are unemployed, and he just doesn't seem to get it. >> reporter: putting america back to work will be the running theme here at the event hosted by linkedin. oh billiona will be speaking at 11:00 this morning. we're told he will with pushing on to southern california for more fundraising. if you would like to witness the event taking place here at the computer science museum, you can actually log on. they're going to be streaming it live through the web through the white house as well as linkedin and we'll have a link on our web site. ktvu, channel 2 news. we learned that pop star lady ga ga was a guest at the second fundraiser yesterday. she was among the estimated 75 guests who paid more than 35,000 to attend. lady ga ga said last week that she wanted to meet with the president to discuss her concerns about bullying. now, we don't know for sure if

the two had that discussion last night. and we do have complete coverage, though, of the president's bay area visit here on ktvu morning news and on our web site anytime of day. just go to ktvu.com and click on the bay area news tab. another possible government shut down is looming. this time victims of storms and other natural disasters will be caught in the middle if the government runs out of money. coming up at 6:15, we're going to go live to our washington, d.c. bureau to tell you what is behind the budget deadlock. and several investigations are happening now at the medical center in oakland after a patient died from an apparent medical error committed by a replacement nurse. the police say a 66-year-old woman died early saturday morning after the replacement nurse gave the patient a non- prescribed dosage of medication. the hospital confirmed that. and they hired 500 temporary nurses on five-day contracts during last thursday's one-day

strike. staff murse nurses who went back to won friday were locked out. >> i was there that day ready to work, and they wouldn't let me in. i felt like i could have prevented this from occurring. >> we're open to look at every aspent of this, but we're very confident that our processes for hiring replacement workers is a rigorous process. >> the nurse who made the mistake is no longer working there and the lock-out is due to end tomorrow. the family of the murdered nursing student michelle lei is inviting the public to pay respects tomorrow night. a vigil will be held tonight in oakland, and the vile incoincides with the four-month mark of her disappearance from kaiser hospital in hayward. the family says the vigil is its way of thanking the community for support. michelle's body was found more than a week ago. a new record is set for the number of california kinder gardeners entering schools

without being vaccinated. more than 11,000 missed at least one vaccine in 2010. that is according to the california department of public health that is 2.5s are of the state's kinder gardeners. the state said many used a personal belief exemption to avoid immunation. it is california's hayest rate of declined vaccines since 1978. the police are looking for the driver that is responsible for a fatal crash on highway 101. the chp says the 37-year-old jaclyn thompson was killed when her honda civic was rear-ended by a pick-up truck. it happened early yesterday morning just south of marsh road. authorities say that truck drove off and the honda was hit again by a taxi cab. witnesses say the truck was a 1960s or 1970s pick-up truck that hit the civic. anyone with information is asked to call the highway control. >> -- patrol. we had a major mess on 880. is it any bet summer.

>> it is a little better because they have opened up one direction of 880. and southbound near the coliseum has reopened. it looks like they have reopened northbound as well. there is still some police activity right near the coliseum. you'll see flashing lights in the area a tow truck -- tow truck for the van benschoten that was in question here and now it looks like both directions of the freeway oh open, but not r northbound is going the take a little time to unwind. give yourself a little extra time if this is your commute. let's go out to the bay bridge. the toll plaza is beginning to get more filled in. it is backed up to the middle of the parking lot for just some of the lanes. if you're driving in antioch or pittsburgh, highway 4, already slow traffic here coming up to highway 4 from brentwood to antioch, but it gets better. if you're driving on 80, and that traffic is still looking good. and here is steve. sal, thank you very much. a very happy monday morning. some patchy fog. the bigger news seem to be the

cool lows, and we'll focus on san francisco's forecast. they're one of the warmest locations. 58 for a current temperature. there are many that are much cooler. we'll go sunny and 64. a high of 68 degrees. speaking of some of those cool temperatures, 45. and downtown 45, and they saw three readings, all 45. and the park and woodside, 47. and that makes sense. and fairfax and mill valley also checking in at 48. los gatos, 49 and lafayette at 49 degrees. 48 now at the napa airport. they were down to 45, so the temperatures coming up a little bit. low 50s for many, including san raphael. redwood city is 52. liver moore is checking in at 52. fairfield, a little cooler. still a westerly breeze, but there is really not much. we expect it to turn more northerly. and high pressure is building in, and you can actually hear it. a lot going on.

but it is not going to play special our weather until later in the week. in the meantime, the high pressure builds in after that morning fog and we'll have lots of sunshine. it will be breezy, but warmer weather will take us into today and tuesday, wednesday, an it looses like thursday will be the transition day. and just saying. just to let you know a little warmer a chilly morning. fog, patchy fog. and most of it is just kind of dancing around a little bit. it is not solid or anything. but overcast over san jose right now. once that burns off, 77 right there. we'll go 80 to con cord. santa rosa will go 82. and downtown might run a little cooler. 70s, and then 60s along the coast. the temperatures, though, will warm up rapidly, including the coast on tuesday into wednesday. it looks good thursday, friday and with your weekend in view, mostly cloudy saturday. it does look like a possibility of a round of rain again on sunday. >> all right. thank you, steve.

in kabul. the u.s. embassy hasn't told us much yet, only that an afghan employee of the u.s. government opened fire and wounded and shot the two americans. an afghan employee died, but it is not clear yet how. this attack comes less than two weeks after mill tans attacked the american embassy in afghanistan. the two u.c. berkeley graduates who spent more than two years in an eye rainian prison, they're back in the u.s., an they're talking about what happened. shane bower and josh fatall flew to new york yesterday four days after being released. they were jailed for 781 days accused of spying. ms of that time, they say, was spent in isolation with limited phone calls and one short visit from their mothers. >> we had to go on hunger strikes repeatedly just to receive letters from our loved ones. many times, too many times we heard the screams of other prisoners being beaten, and there was nothing we could do

to help them. >> reporter: both say the only reason they were held, according to them, is because they are americans and not because they might have strayed across the iran-iraq border. and the third time in five months congress is taking the government to a brink of a shut down. ktvu's alison burns joins us now with the political wrangling and the vote scheduled for later today. this time the hang-up is about billions of dollars in disaster relief money. the federal emergency management agency says its disaster relief fund could run dry as early as today or tomorrow if congress doesn't act that means the cities an states affected by recent hurricanes and tornadoes won't get the money they're waiting for. some aid has already been held back. today the senate votes on a bill to provide the money and keep the government running through november, but it does not include spending cuts for a house bill that passed last

week. the democrats and republicans are calling the whole mess embarrassing. >> i don't like this business of sitting around blaming each other over such small potatoes. what we really ought to be doing is espning time to see if we can get $4 trillion in debt reduction. >> reporter: the house and senate negotiators are working behind closed doors on a compromise, but the word is no deal yet. reporting live from wanders, alison burns, ktvu, channel 2 news. mexican authorities are searching the gulf of mexico for a passenger who disappeared from a carnival cruise ship. 39-year-old clint markham was on a seven-day cruise to mexico with his wife. he was last seen on friday, shortly after the ship departed for its return to texas. and carnival says markham was seen jumping overboard. some witnesses say he slipped and fell over. now, so far there have been no signs of him. the ship returned to texas yesterday. time now, 6:17. now we're hering that stronger

safety measures are in place in san felipe mexico after that tragic boating accident involving the bay area fishermen. on july 3, their vote capsized in the sea of cortez during a storm. three dozen people survived, however, seven fishermen were never found. the harbor master now requires boats to carry a battery- operated emergency beacon and they also say their boats are being thoroughly checked before they depart. and the german tourist who was visiting who was shot, and the suspects are in court today. they were visiting when they got caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting. the police say the six suspects are from gangs based in san francisco. today's court hearing was originally scheduled for august 16. it has been postponed twice. and time now is 6:18. let's get you to where you need to go now. sal, a lot going on this morning. >> it has been a pretty tough

commute and thins are beginning to get a little better, which is good news. for example, 580 commute is getting up to the livermore valley. we're getting a little more slow traffic, but still looking pretty good over to castro valley, the commute on highway 4 is looking good. the pittsburgh bay point. 680 is clear, but there is slow traffic. an, again, we have been looking at the commute. let me move this over to the right a little bit and up on the freeway. the nimitz freeway has reopened and things are getting better there on 880 and not that many slowdowns as you come up towards the area. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. there is word of a minor crash in one of the fast track lanes here at the bay bridge toll plaza. so watch for a little slow traffic there. once you make it on oh to the bridge, it looks pretty good. this morning if you're driving, again, we want to show you 880 at the coliseum. just to remind you that you can still see residual slowdowns, but for the most part things

grand jury right now. traffic is moving along pretty well if you're driving on interstate 880, even on the side roads here, so we have finally put a resolve to this situation for drivers on 880 near the coliseum. more on what happened coming up. and all right, sal. a 5-year-old boy boy is back safe with his family after a mix-up at his school near modesto. the 5-year-old conner campbell, his parents always pick him up from school, but last thursday his substitute teacher mistakenly put him on a school bus. he was being reunited with his parents after a good samaritan spotted him and they called the authorities. >> he has been having nightmares, two nights in a row, screaming, not able to sleep. it is horrible. >> and conner's parents say the little boy was dropped two miles from home in a rural area, and he wandered around for two hours. the school is now reexamining

its safety procedures. and cupcakes and cookies are continuing to cause a political controversy on the u.c. berkeley campus. the cal students' senate held an emergency meeting last night to discuss respectful conduct of student groups. the meeting is in response to a bake sale planned for tomorrow by the cal college republicans. the group wants to sell baked goods for different prices based on sex and race. the members call it commentary on affirmative action. >> we don't feel that anyone should be treated differently because of the of their skin and the purpose of the event is to highlight why it is so outrageous. the reaction to our event was expected. and the student senate passed a resolution clarifying its stance against disrespectful speech and the cal college of republicans say they won't actually charge prices based on sex and race, but they will have signs with the different prices. more super markets getting rid of the self check-out lanes

in stores. it apparently improves customer service. albertson's has already cut back and big wise foods in new england, they're the latest to join this. only 16% of supermarket transactions last year were done at self-check-out lanes. that's down from a high of 22% in 2007. and president obama is in the middle of a west coast campaign swing. the big event he is taking part in right here in the bay area this morning. in oakland, a welcome sight for commuters at 880 as traffic is slowing once again. we'll tell you what shut it down for more than two hours. and also the opening bell is just about to ring on wall street. pam will have all of the early numbers.

news. there it is live in new york this morning ringing the opening bell where there are definitely micked reactions overnight and early this morning. most of the acian markets, all of the acian markets closed down actually worrying about a global recession, but early this morning, the european markets showing some optimism over new measures being taken to help with debt in that region. so we'll see what happens. it looks like a higher opening for us, but, again, things change during the day. >> very interesting. >> we'll smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it is monday, september 26. >> and good morning. i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. >> and big news. interstate 880 in oakland is back open again this morning after being shut down for hours during a police stand-off this morning. ktvu has been out there all morning and he is back now with the details on what caused this big mess, craig? >> reporter: dave, it was a stolen vehicle take caused the

mess. a good news-bad news at this point, behind me at the coliseum, you can see 880 flowing in both directions freely, the bad news is the person they suspected of stealing a vehicle is out here somewhere. the chp says if you see somebody suspicious, somebody who might have been involved in this stolen vehicle theft, the freeway shut down, please call them. this all started around 3:45 this morning. at least that's when we got to this point in the freeway. chp said some of its officers spotted this van on highway 880 at around 3:30. they determined it was stolen. they attempted to pull the driver over. the driver didn't stop. a chase began and ended here when the van got to -- hit the center divide here. now, after trying to talk to the person in the van, the oakland police s.w.a.t. team was called out here because they thought that -- the chp thought they might have a conflict on their hands. when they finally did get to look inside the van, no one was inside. >> our officers attempted to

arrest and determine who was driving that vehicle. at some point unbeknownst to the officer, the person actually got out of the vehicle, but because the vehicle was reported stolen, we followed standard protocol which is very slow approach to find out who is inside the vehicle. >> again, nobody was inside the vehicle, so you had a lot of people out here on the freeway just parked, and it was little real a parking lot for a while even though nobody was inside. the chp officers actually used some non-lethal weapons on the van to see if they could talk to the person inside. that wasn't necessary as the person inside was gone. reporting live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. both sides of interstate 80 were backed up for hours during that stand off. many drivers who were stuck in the mess with no way of getting off the freeway. >> and they have to do what they have to do, but i wish they blocked it back further so i could have turned off. >> again, both sides of the

interstate have reopened. we want to check in with sal now to see how the traffic is moving along. better news, sal? >> better news for sure. we're looking at interstate 880 from our map situation and things have roared nicely. you see the maps are turning back to the normal clover again. i left the indicator just to show you what it was. it is always slow there, as you remember. let's take a look at the -- i think we have a live picture from the control room. i will show you the traffic here is moving well in both directions. you can see it is a little crowded, but i wouldn't be afraid to use it now. remember, they had temporarily lifted the restriction on big rigs on 580. that restriction is now back in place. so the big rigs are now required to use 880 in oakland. 6:33. let's go back to the desk. >> preparations are underway in mountain view this morning for a town hall meeting with president obama. ktvu has the preview of what we

can expect. tara? >> reporter: well, the secret service had police block off an entire section of this parking lot. it is across the street from where the event is being held. we saw a truck load of potties being brought in and just a few weeks ago we spoke to police who said that they were for for the extra officer whose have been assigned here this morning. the president obama will be arriving just before 11:00. he landed at me fete field last night. the first at the woodside estate of stomp anthony and then a bash at the facebook exec of cheryl sandberg. and the president is here to push his jobs plan, and that is his focus at the computer history museum this morning hosted by linkedin. >> it is great that he is coming to silicon valley because we have companies that are growing, creating jobsment we're adding jobs here in the valley and that is a good thing. there is a lot to be learned for the rest of the country. >> reporter: jobs are a major concern in california where unemployment stands at 12%, the

ran after him. there was struggle, and the man was shot after police say he threatened them with a gun. the police say that man's gun was found at the scene. and a police search continues now for the driver of the car. >> and oakland police have now identified a man killed during a shooting in broad daylight on saturday. the police say the 20-year-old roberto guzman was working on his car when a man shot him point blank. the police are telling the oakland tribune they do have a motive in this case, but they haven't released the details yet. no arrests have been made. and three small earthquakes shook napa county. all three were centered and the biggest quake was just after 2:00 a.m., a mooing tuesday 3.0. two minutes later a magnitude 2.0 quake hit and a magnitude 2.1 followed at 2:21:00 a.m. no injuries or damage being reported at this point. and now two minor earthquakes also shook the bay area over the weekend. the first hit last night, and

the u.s. g.s. measured that at 3.5. callers as far away as south san francisco told ktvu that they felt the shaking but did not experience any damage. the second quake hit three minutes later off of ocean beach and the u. s. g.s. recorded that one at 2.3. time now is 6:37. let's go to sal. you know i think you can do anything. can you help the people at the toll plaza? >> we're trying to right now. the westbound bay bridge, there was a crash at the fast track lanes, and they have turned those metering lights on. so now the traffic is a little bit slower coming up to the bay bridge toll plaza. just a few moments ago. and it had been okay, but what happens is they turn those meeterring lights on. still not all that bad. i don't want to scare you too much, but there certainly is a back-up where there wasn't one. 880 north and southbound. the traffic is moving well after an earlier police stand

our very, very low 80s. there could be a few upper 50s, and 82. sonoma, 80. petaluma, 78. 79 in walnut creek. 70 in alameda. berkeley at 71. 80 in los gatos. 77 in san jose. and on the peninsula, woodside, 77. palo alto in there and 70 at san bruno. daley city, patchy fog, breezy, warmer tuesday, wednesday, probably into thursday, but i think things start to turn around. it will increase the clouds saturday, and you might see more rain. >> and the wine country, and they will be busy picking grapes after a minor setback over the weekend a couple of days of cooler temperatures and light rain slowed down the harvest for some of the growers, but didn't damage the crops. last week's heat wave helped kick the harvest into high gear and a lot of wine growers expect thissier's harvest to

gork good morning to you. welcome back. here is a look at some of the top stories we're looking into for you. the police stand off at interstate 880 is over. 880 is flowing along right now. the chp says the driver who had refused to get out of a van that was reported stolen, has fled the scene. you can see in these live pictures, both sides of interstate 880 were shut down, but they're reopened now. the police are still looking for that driver. and also, president obama is here in the bay area this morning. he's another live picture. this is a live look at the fairmont hotel in san jose. the president spent the night there. today the president will attend a town hall meeting hosted by linkedin. that's at 11:00 a.m. and then the president will depart for more fundraisers in

southern california. and the federal government is on the brink of yet another government shut down. the issue this time, billions of dollars in disaster relief money. the house and the senate are trying to come to some agreement before fema runs out of money. and nevada i don't have brian sandoval says reno is starting to heal after the deadly plane crash at the reno air races. hundreds of people gathered to sign a banner of support for the 70 people who are still recovering from their injuries. they also dedicated an oak tree in a city park as a way to remember the 11 people who died. the cues of the crash remains under investigation. the police in sparks november, nevada remin on alert following the fatal shooting of a hell's angel leader. and he was killed "inside howard county" the nugget casino on friday night. the police say the deadly gun fire came between a fight between the hell's angels an a rival motorcycle club. two members of the rival club were wounded. the police made one arrest and expect to make more.

for five weeks now the manhunt continues for a gunman who killed two people, including a fort bragg city councilman. authorities believe he is hiding in the thick redwoods. and heavily armed local and federal law enforcement have been scouring the forest, and his father says his son is schizophrenic and probably believes he is running from alien spacecraft and that the county ignored his pleas to get his son medical treatment. >> and a scheduled natural gas purge by pg&e prompted the evacuation of a neighborhood. they evacuated about 50 houses before they learned about the release of this. it was a scheduled project. the crews were replaces a pipe on dover street. they had to purge system of the gas before installing that new pipe, but some worried it might be a gas leak and the noise from that purge, they heard it more than a mile away. >> one of the pittsburgh police

and 6:47 is the time. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. >> reporter: good morning to you. right now things are a little better than we started off, although it is certainly crowded as we get to the peak of the commute as you look at a live picture of interstate 80 heading west. you can see traffic is going to be very slow or busy, i should say. not really slow, but not at the speed limit anymore as you drive through berkeley and get out to oakland. and the bay bridge, there is going to be a crowd waiting for you there. there is about a 15 to 20- minute delay. the fast track lanes once you get closer to the bridge, moving a little faster. but it is a big wait. there are no major problems. there was an earlier crash at the fast track lanes. as we look at antioch, highway 4, the and go. pretty slow traffic. it does improve by the time you reach pittsburgh and it is by bay point. we do have some slow traffic on 80, especially in richmond and also in el ser reteo. and for the most part we have

had a nice, quiet morning on highway 17, highway 85, 280, through all of the cities here. we've had just a couple of slowdowns, but it has been a nice, quiet morning accidentwise. let's go to steve. >> thank you very much. very low clouds. cool this morning. lots of 40s. as you know, yesterday, our first rain of the season made it in here. not very much, but there were a few totals that came in that were okay. and .32. and fort bragg, .30. and something usual suspects here. mill valley picked up .08. santa rosa and con cocord, .02. so not much, not much, but it made it, and we had some light off-and-on showers. the cool lows this morning, and i think they're a little warmer now. system of these lows have been coming up, but this is where they bottomed out. woodside, 47. fairfax, mill valley, 48.

and los gatos, 49. and lafayette, also at 49 degrees. that may be where you are, too. 45. there you go. they went up to 48. now they have backed off to 45 again. san raphael at 50. so overcast skies. mostly cloudy, san jose and 54. that system moved out. the high pressure will build in, and we will get more of a northerly breeze, but morning fog, chilly lows, but sunshine, breezy and warmer today. the warmer weather is more like tomorrow. 80s and then low 90s. it looks like after wednesday it will start bringing those temperatures down. lots going on. not so much here, but across the pacific that bears watching for the upcoming weekend. it sure likes like rain coming back in. today, though, it will be a little warmer after the chill in the morning air. so some upper 70s. low 80s. rather uniform here. but alameda, 70. brentwood, 83.

prison, inmates prepare to continue their hunger strike. the strike leaders are urging them to pick up where they left off last july where hundreds of inmates refused food for three weeks. it is in protest to the current conditions there. the time is 6:56. alcatraz is getting an image makeover. they are thinking about letting you spend the night at the former prison. that's just one idea being considered by the park service. others include adding con kegs stands, opening up new parts of the island as well. nearly 1.5 million people visit alcatraz every year and the park service is trying to figure out how to maximize the experience. the golden gate national recreation area will hold two public comment sections on the alcatraz proposal. one takes place tomorrow at lacy middle school in pacifica and the second one is set for wednesday at the high school in mill valley. both the meetings begin at 4:00 p.m. just coming up on 7:00, we're going to check back in

with sal for a look at traffic. >> it has been busy for a monday. we're looking at some of these pictures. you can see that the traffic certainly has become slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see slow traffic for at least a 25-minute delay cis kind of severe. i wouldn't say it is severe, but it is slow. let's take a look at 880. that has recovered after earlier problem ins front of the coliseum. this morning in the south bay, we're getting some slow traffic on 85 and 101. now, let's go to steve. he i was wandering over to the keyboard when i didn't have to do that. patchy fog, clear and chilly. to be honest with you, i was looking at the 10-day outlook and it is very bullish for rain. sunshine, breezy and warmer today.
