collision. ktvu's channel 2 report erratum was in oakland with -- reporter tara moriarty is in oakland with pictures. >> reporter: good morning. we just got off the phone with the ac transit company and they said the bus driver took off. he fled the scene. i guess he changed his mind and a few minutes later, decided to return to speak with authorities. we're here where an investigation is underway. the crash happened last night around 9:20 on the corn r of 86th and international boulevard -- corner of 86th and international boulevard. the driver said the driver of the suv ran a stop sign and smacked in the middle of the ac transit bus. the frightening part is the mother. you can see where the glass is busted. she was knocked off her feet. she did suffer injuries, although we're told minor.

she was taken to the hospital. firefighters say that other bus passengers were injured but did not have to be transported and police did question the driver at the scene. we're trying to get ahold of police to let us know where they stand in the investigation. the alameda county sheriff's department as well as the bus low pressure are -- as well as the bus company are vealing the incident. -- are investigating the incident. allie rasmus is live outside one local campus that may possibly be closed. allie? >> reporter: well, the school here behind us is lakeview elementary off grand avenue near 5 -- 580. the average classroom there's one teacher for every few students and that's a good

ratio. there are five schools the oakland school district is thinking of closing along with lakeview, they are also talking about shutting down -- >> reporter: altogether, there are more than 900 students that attend those schools. the school district says closing these schools could save them more than $2 million and that the oakland student population has declined. oakland has about 101 schools for every -- excuse me, 101 schools for a total of 38,000 students. town's board meeting is at 6 -- tonight's board meeting is at 6:00 at the lakeview school. they are not expected to make a final decision about closing these schools until later this month. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, allie. the berkeley college republicans are going ahead with a controversial bake sale. the sale starts in a few hours at 10:00 this morning on

sprowell plaza. originally, they wanted the goods to be baked on the buyer's sex and minorities would pay less than whites. however, we're told the goods will not be sold at different prices. and it appears the government has avoided shutting down, but it was not due to some bipartisan compromise. last night the senate passed a spending measure that the house will likely pass when it returns from recess next week. it droops a provision for $1 billion worth of disaster aid that caused disagreement among the parties about where that money would come from. this was made possible after federal emergency officials announced they have enough money to make it through friday, which is the last day of the budget year. earlier, fema had said it needed an extra infusion of cash just to make it through the end of the week. 7:04.

facebook getting into politics now. it filed paperwork to launch a political action committee. coming up for you at 7:15, we'll take you live to our washington, d.c. bureau. we're gonna find out more about why facebook is looking to make more friends in washington. >> not a bad thing to make friends in washington. >> yes. let's check in with sal who is watching things, including a fire. >> that's right. the fire is out. the county department there, on the scene of this strip mall fire. it went to three alarms. it's on el camino real near the lawrence expressway. there's a fire truck blocking one of the lanes there. it's not causing a huge traffic jam. it looks like two lanes of the el camino are shut down. if it stays that way for much longer, we'll have a little bit of a traffic jam. right now, so far, not too bad. let's take a look at the commute at the toll plaza.

that's really filled in. it's backed up for at least a 20-minute delay. in the south bay, northbound 17 looks good but there is a crash, southbound 17 at 85. also we have a look at the peninsula, 101 and 280 looking pretty good with slowing on 92 near 280. across the bay, we already have slow and go and stop-and-go traffic between hayward, union city and fremont. not too bad. it will probably get worse, unfortunately. and antioch, stop and go. pittsburg, stop and go. big point looks okay. let's go to steve. okay. cover your eyes. here we go. sunshine. sunshine. it will be all right. no fog. we can't find any fog. that's a good sign for the coast as temperatures warm up. a little bit of a north wind. it will kick into high gear and then i think level off as we head into wednesday. enjoy the sunshine. it looks like the changes take us into the weekend and next week. the city will warm up as well.

"the chronicle" reports the district volunteered to test this out. the goal is to get more students interested in math by

welcome back. just this morning, the rockin' roll hall of fame announced the nominees for the class of 2012. they include -- joan jett and the blackhearts. gunsin' roses, the cure and heart. some of the previous nominees up for induction include, the beastie boys, the red hot chili peppers and donna summer. to qualify, they must have received their single or album 25 years ago. 500 critics, musicians and industry professionals will now cast their ballot and the inductees will be announced in late november. opening statements are due to begin today in the trial of michael jackson's doctor. there's dr. conrad murray. he's charged with involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of michael jackson. coming up for you at 7:36.

7:29. san mateo police say they had no choice but to open fire on two dogs after they threatened a small child. ktvu's kraig debro is live at lori meadows park with details on what happened and reaction from neighbors. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the sun is starting to come up here. as the sun starts to come up, you get more and more people at this park. it's remarkably a large number of people here at the park this morning. i spoke to a woman. she said she came right after all of this happened. see that structure to the right? she said this shooting happened, the shootings happened beyond the structure on the grass. police shot two dogs but one of the biggest surprises for one person is, he says is knowing the dogs that were shot. >> very nice, very nice dogs. >> reporter: mark burston says

he knows the dogs that police shot. they were both boxers. up until yesterday, neither dog proved to be a problem. both dogs were threatening people at the park. police say they first tried to taser the dogs but they were forced to shoot two dogs. >> i think it's shocking. being a park there will be incidents here, kids playing and dogs. but i have never heard of anything like this. >> reporter: taking a live look, you can see people with their dogs. you can tell just by looking at that, there is a bit of a community here. everybody is talking about this. neither of the dogs that were involved in what happened yesterday were on a leash at the time. there is a sign posted here, calling forual dogs, take a quick look at it. all dogs must be on a leash.

high caliber assault rifle and breaking into a vacation dabben. law enforcement have placed 40 surveillance cameras around to helping -- to try to help catch this fugitive. authorities are investigating several cabin burglaries and break-ins where a shot gun and a rifle were stolen. bassler is accused of killing two people including fort bragg city councilman jerry melo last month. new details are emerging about a medical error that caused a patient's dog at alta bates. judith ming, 66, died on saturday. according to newspaper reports, a nutritional supplement that should have been put in her feeding tube was mistakenly given intravenously by a replacement nurse, who is from new orleans. she's among the 500 replacement nurses sutter health hired when

they went on strike last work. nurses were allowed to return this morning after a five-day lockout. it could be difficult to find a place to smoke in downtown concord. tonight, the city council is scheduled to vote on expanding concord's ban on smoking at a downtown park. if approved -- if approved, it could become illegal to smoke a certain amount of feet near the park. >> we cater to babies, children, families. nobody wants to bring their strollers through a cloud of smoke to have their portraits taken. >> the mayor says the plan was introduced after many complaints from downtown business owners. and teen spoking -- smoking is at an all-time low in

california. on friday, the department of health released their 2011 youth tobacco survey. it shows that teens were able to buy tobacco from retailers, 5.7% of the time. this is down from 7.7% last year. the health department credits a combination of enforcement, education and public opinion toward teen smoking. 7:34. a vigil will be held in oakland tonight for michelle le, the nursing student, who disappeared four months ago today. her body was not found until about two weeks ago in the niles canyon area of alameda county. a former friend of hers has been charged with her murder. tonight's vigil is at 6:00 at samuel merit university, where mush shell le was a nursing student. in just about an hour, opening statements begin in the trial of michael jackson's doctor. our reporter, bob decastro, is live in los angeles with more on the charges against conrad

murray and what's expected today. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah. we'll give you a live look and show you what's happening outside the criminal courthouse in downtown l.a. as you can see, a lot of members of the media have gathered here. the judge running a very tight ship, so we expect this to happen on time. we're told some 80 media outlets around the globe have come here to cover the trial of dr. conrad murray. also, as you might expect, michael jackson fans are here. they are holding signs saying "justice for michael." there are also people here in support of dr. conrad murray as well. we expect members of the jackson family will be here. some of them could be testifying during this trial. there's questions whether or not the children will be testifying during this trial. we're hearing at last word, they will not be testifying. and, of course, the attorneys will be here as well.

pinole to richmond. 280 san jose, not to be left out, northbound 280 very slow coming around the corner there to highway 17. we're now getting word of caltrain delays. let's go to steve. >> all right, sal. thank you. a lot of sunshine for us. although a lot of patchy fog has come back to the san mateo coast. more on that in a minute. if you haven't heard, it's typhoon and hurricane season and a whopper after typhoon hit the philippines. typhoon nast hit this morning. thousands evacuated, 12 fatalities so far. manila was south of the epicenter but it's taking a lot of rain. there's reports of flooding at the u.s. embassy and also the hospital there, reports of flooding. this is a powerful typhoon.

it moid along -- it moved along mainly in the northern part. this is causing a lot of heavy rain. manila sea walls have had a lot of waves. they average about 20 typhoons a year on average. this was one of the strongest to hit in a while. so typhoon nest. our forecast is very quiet, thankfully. but it could get interesting. again, patchy fog, right on the san mateo khost. there's not much there. you can always tweet me. he was fog free until about 20 minutes ago. there it was a little bit of patchy fog. tomorrow looks good, more of the same, changes happening for the weekend. cooler, clouds, it looks like some rain. i'm not really sold on the sunday rain yet. if anything, it would be light. next tuesday looks impressive. today what looks impressive is the sunshine and weather for almost everybody. 78 in the city. almost every location saying calm on the wind in the city.
