we're just finding out about a crash on the bay bridge if the fellas in the control room can bring it up on one of our routers. this is freeway 85. the bridge, westbound incline section, we have a three-car accident. one vehicle is blocking the two right lanes. there are two or three more on the shoulder. drivers are out walking around according to people who have called us with a cell phone. you see now the police cars are beginning to arrive. this is a live picture of a new crash on the bay bridge. i'm afraid to say that's going to mean terrible traffic on the toll plaza. once you have any lanes blocked, it becomes a big backup. we'll follow this developing news. we're not sure if anyone is injured but it is there. emergency vehicles are arriving on the scene. again accident bay bridge. plan accordingly. 6:01. let's go back to the desk. >> obviously going to abmajor story. time 6:01.

overnight there was a shooting in the garage of the east bay dragons motorcycle club and one person is dead. tara moriarty is getting the details and will be back with the very latest what the people are saying about the victim and also what they're doing. we'll hear from her in just a couple of minutes. in the meantime police are saying that oakland shooting is not related to the fatal shooting of a san jose hells angel in nevada. a man was arrested and charges include assault with a deadly weapon. witnesses say he was seen firing shots into a crowd. a homeless woman is in police custody this morning after allegedly vandalizing san

francisco police cars. noel walker has more on this unusual early morning incident. >> reporter: all these police cars damaged in the shadow of the hall of justice about a block away. a homeless man helped stop a vandal who was smashing the windows of the police cars you see there parked across the street. take a look at the damage close- up. shattered close on three san francisco police patrol cars. a homeless man who was in the area says he saw a woman vandalizing those cars. he told police he pepper sprayed her and then ran to the police station about a block away to report the crime. >> as he was going to drop off some recyclables, she came out of an area nearby and accused him of tampering with her tent, something like that. i'm not a hundred percent sure. she allegedly brandished a knife at him. he fled. and then she then went over to the police cars and struck the

three police cars. >> reporter: police say they found that knife in the suspect's backpack. it was allegedly used to brandish at person who turned her in a little bit earlier in the evening. investigators don't know whether or not the suspect used that knife to smash out the windows, but she is under arrest this morning for felony vandalism. reporting live in san francisco, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. more information has come out about the bart shooting in san francisco. they say the officers who gunned down charles hill at the civic center last july did not receive crisis intervention training. that's a 40-hour course that teaches officers how to deal with mentally ill people. lawmakers are looking into how bart handled the shooting and

the subsequent protests. as we mentioned earlier overnight in oakland there was a shooting in the garage ever the east bay grag dragons motor -- dragons motorcycle club and one person was killed. tara moriarty is back with us now to tell us what the friends are saying. >> reporter: they're starting to pile up some candles in front of the club. this is where the shooting happened. we want to go around the corner at 88th and international to show you where the shooting happened. you can see the garage down there. that's where witnesses say the victim was targeted and then police say that the suspect took off in this direction right here. the violence erupted around 9:45 last night. the victim was rushed to highland hospital but we're told he died about an hour or so later. police say the victim was shot several times. some witnesses say the bullet struck his chest and arm areas. club members showed ktvu a photo on the wall inside of the club. they say the victim was the man on the right hand side known as stuttering mike.

police have not confirmed if he was a member of the east bay dragons but they did tell us about the club's reputation. >> they do do some good things for the community and the neighborhood here. i've had some other run-ins with them that haven't been as pleasant. >> reporter: twitter has been abuzz since the shooting. one person wrote, i hope that ike is good. those dragons need a secret location away from the youngsters. he didn't make it. another wrote, rest in peace to my partner ike. i swear all the people at the dragons watch me in my circle grow up. the east bay dragons are steeped in history. on the group's website they have several photos dating back to the 1950's. they tout themselves as being the only african-american motorcycle club. coming up we'll see if any of them show up this morning to let us know why anyone would want stuttering ike dead. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. president obama will give a pep talk to students today

telling them to discover new passions and try out new interests. this is during his annual back- to-school speech today. coming up for you at 6:15, we'll give you a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom and tell you how a bay area high school student will get a special shout out from the president in his speech today. disabled commuters complained they're going to be hurt the most if metropolitan transit commission relocates from oakland to san francisco. in just a couple hours, the mtc will vote on whether to move its office from oakland to san francisco and if it's approved, the agency would be sharing building space with the air quality management district and the toll authority. however, critics say the move costs too much money. it would also make it harder for disabled people to go there. 6:07 is the time right now. back over to sal. if you're heading for the bay bridge, you might want to find another way. there is a crash on the bay bridge westbound incline

section. two lanes blocked and now the police and the fire department are on the scene here. looks like we have at least a little bit of a backup approaching but we also do have backup at the toll plaza because what happens is, they turn the metering lights on extra slow. you're waiting there. naturally it leads to a backup at the toll plaza so again this morning you need to get on the road early if you take the bay bridge. get on the road early because there is going to be waiting involved. also we have a problem in east palo alto at the corner of bay and university right near the mcdonald's there. it's about half a block from the police station in east palo alto. it's a fatal accident at that corner and university avenue is shut down right now. you can't get off the -- you can get off the dunbarton bridge and get over to university 101. you can but you won't be able to get through here for a few blocks anyway so plan accordingly. if you are driving on the

freeway, hayward traffic is moving along nicely in both directions. 6:08. let's go to steve. have to go down to marsh and cut over. clear, mild, 60s for lows. yeah, 60s for lows for many. not everybody but there are a lot, especially close to the coast. 70s, 80s and also mid-90s. san francisco looking for a sunny and warm day. already 64 officially. 74 at noon. i'm this close to bumping up the city high but we'll stay with it for now. the reason being, look at it. these are current temps. ocean beach, marina 62. inner richmond 63. financial district 65. south of marketson and china basin says you can't touch me. 66 degrees. that is warm. 50s and 60s for many. already low 60s for some. mid-50s in the north bay. they're running about 4 to 5 degrees warmer on the low. they'll be in the warm category

intersection. the fire is out but the crews are still out there on the scene. they'll be out there through the morning. some of the nearby businesses were evacuated but we're happy to tell you no one was hurt. still not clear what caused the gas leak and what led to this fire. the red cross is busy helping providing shelter to several families left homeless after a big fire in san francisco. the fire started late yesterday afternoon in hayden philmore. you're looking at home video here. this is the fire at its peak. those flames caused a lot of damage to a three-story victorian but everyone inside got out safely. one man took some action even before firefighters got there. >> he ran inside and went up to the top floor and started banging on doors and got the fire extinguishers and just tried to get everybody out of there. >> investigators will be back at the scene this morning checking for the cause of the fire. several witnesses said they heard several popping sounds just before the fire began.

president obama delivers his third annual back-to-school speech in a few hours, and as ktvu's allison burns reports, the president will single out a fremont high school student for a special mention. >> reporter: that's right. this speech is going to be broadcast in schools across the country today that choose to show it. president obama who also spoke at a school in denver yesterday will say that in these tough economic times, the country needs the students' ideas and their passion. he'll try to empathize with some of the stresses facing kids these days. he'll say i know you've got a lot to deal with outside of could school, too. your circle of friends might be changing. issues that usually were confined to hallways now find their way to twitter feeds and

facebook accounts. happy day microfunds gives loans to low income students to start their own businesses. allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. iran may send military ships close to the u.s. east coast. iranian admiral said, quote, like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to american marine borders. the admiral did not say when such a deployment would happen or the number of ships that would be sent. in a strange twist al qaeda is actually joining the u.s. in criticizing iran's president for his theories that the u.s., not al qaeda was behind the september 11 terrorist attacks. the iranian president repeated the address last week at the united nations that triggered a walkout by the u.s. and several other delegations. an al qaeda magazine article says iran sees itself as a

rival to al qaeda when it comes to anti-americanism and iran invented the conspiracy theory because it is jealous of the 9/11 attacks. the israeli government gave the okay to build 1100 new housing units in east jerusalem. the new housing will be added to an existing jewish settlement. all of this comes despite the pleas from the u.s. and european diplomats for israel to stop expanding settlements and resume the peace negotiations. secretary of state hillary clinton called the action counterproductive. palestinians say it proves israel is not serious about the peace process. back here at home a sausalito city council woman promising -- councilman is promising better behavior and apologized to slapping the hand of a council colleague. michael kelly apologized to carolyn ford. she accepted but they won't be sitting next to each other. two weeks ago ford held up her hand and she said, shoosh right

there to kelly. kelly then slapped her hand. she filed charges accusing him of assault. the marin district attorney is examining that case. this morning state senator leland ye will appear at a press conference in san francisco to push for legislation that would allow people to register to vote online. several other states already offer online registration. in california online registration has been delayed till at least 2010. senator ye is introducing a bill he says would have greater safeguards to fraud than the current paper registration process. our time now 6:18. two of san francisco's best known concert venues will stop selling tickets through ticket master this weekend. the warfield theater and the regency ballroom will start using a new ticket service on sunday. they say the new ticketing service will be accessible on the website so the two -- website to the to concert halls. there won't be fees to print tickets at home. the first tickets available on

so coming off the done burton -- dunbarton bridge, a loot of people use university avenue. here is the closure. i would say as steve mentioned earlier, use mar are, -- use marsh, use something else. don't get off the dunbarton bridge and use university because you'll be detoured through a neighborhood. if you don't know your way around, you could get lost. not a good thing. you want to use other roads instead. let's take a look at the dunbarton and san mateo bridge is an alternative perhaps. 6:20. let's go to steve. clear skies, very mild on the lows already. temperatures 50s and mid-60s. we are going to be experiencing a very warm day. even the coast will have sunshine and warm conditions. 70s and 80s. and even some 90s. high pressure has just kicked in in a big way and there's no breeze at all. 64 in the city. 64 hayward. cooler towards napa but they were 48 yesterday. so they're 54. that's at the airport today. plenty going on in the pacific just not today. it will be starting to make its

no one was injured in that incident. pge crews will start venting natural gas in san carlos. it's happening near 280 and edgewood road. the natural gas is being purged so crews can conduct pressure tests on the pipelines in the area. residents in the area have been warned and they are being warned they're going to smell some gas. but pge says don't be aharmed. that work is -- alarmed. that work is expected to go on through midnight. the woman suspected of killing nursing soon student michelle le is expected to appear in court. gisele esteban killed le because of a lover's triangle. le's body was found on september 17 in the canyon. last night family and friends gathered to remember michelle le four months to the day she disappeared. the memorial was held at samuel

merritt university. le was just six months shy of graduating and becoming a nurse. her brother says he will now help other families search for missing loved ones. they also announced a special scholarship for nursing students that will be named after michelle le. union nurses are now back on the job at bay area hospitals n. comes after a patient died when a nurse put a supplement inside of a tube. parents debate add plan to close several schools. -- debated a plan to close several schools. students marched last night holding signs. inside more than 400 people packed the auditorium. superintendent tony smith says the district's resources are just stretched too thin and he's recommending closing five

elementary schools. almost 100 people asked for a chance to speak. >> this is a tremendous loss to our community. we have a large school with a lot of heart. it will be a detriment to our community to close this. >> where was transportation ever considered? some of these schools are going to have people who have a real life issue with getting their children from point a to point b. >> superintendent smith is also proposing eliminating seven other schools and then americaning them into existing schools in an effort to save $2 million. the school board is expected to vote on the plan at the end of next month. and despite $850,000 in recent improvements, oakland's santa fe elementary school is on that closure list. a sign outside the school thanks voters for supporting bond measure b which paid for new fencing there and a new playground. we asked oakland school spokesman about those upgrades which were finished just last

month. he told ktvu the process was put into motion a long time ago before those closure recommendations. oakland plans to stop its controversial practice of placing liens on properties they consider an eyesore. this comes after the city was criticized by a civil grand jury. it says the city was placing liens on properties for tens of thousands of dollars before owners had a chance to respond or appeal. oakland's fees will now be evaluated and compared to other cities. today is the spare the air day. this means unhealthy levels of pollution are expected to cross the area. you are encouraged to limit your car trips, maybe take public transportation if you can. the hot wester and light winds are -- weather and light winds are causing poor air quality. sal is not smiling. we have major traffic commute problems, including the toll plaza. >> that's right. and also on the peninsula, dave. so we have a couple of different things going on. itself first one is -- the first one is this fatal crash we v. news chopper -- we have.

news chopper 2 being overhead university avenue at bay road. this crash involved several vehicles. one of them -- in fact, most of these vehicles are still there in the intersection and they're doing a police investigation. now, what you have to know is if you use the dumbarton bridge, you get off at university avenue. that's your first left usually. don't do that. go up to willow or go all the way up to marsh. people are driving through neighborhoods and you're being detoured so just avoid the whole thing and when you get off the dumbarton bridge, just stay on the bridge causeway there a little bit longer and go up to willow road instead. you can get through that way to 101. let's go to contra costa county. i'm sorry, we skipped the bay bridge. how could we do that when it's so messy because of an earlier crash. the bay bridge is backed up for at least a 25-minute wait getting into san francisco this morning. there was an earlier crash at the incline section. that's been removed but traffic is slow and it has been since

and president obama will encourage students to test out new ideas during his annual back-to-school speech today. the president will also mention a fremont high school student during that speech, a student who launched his own nonprofit organization giving microloans to other students who want to start their own business. students at st. mary's college are planning a somber rally later today in response to two campus sexual assaults in the past two weeks. craig debro tells us both crimes took place inside a dorm. >> reporter: that's right. both crimes took place inside a dorm and police have identified students as being suspects in both of those crimes. i just spoke to a couple of representatives of st. mary's college over the phone. one says she'll be here in about 15 minutes so stay tune for mornings on 2. we'll have more. i also got a call into police because they are actually handling this investigation. two sexual assaults on campus.

one reported september 11. itself other the 25th. the victims in both cases are students. at least one suspect in each case is a student. when i spoke with the campus rep this morning, she told me if she -- she told me she didn't know if alcohol was involved. a student was arrested in connection with the september 11 assault later that day. police have identified a student and qain assistance of suspects -- acquaintance of suspects in the september 25th case but have not made an arrest yesterday. they won't be increasing security because the people involved knew each other. instead the college is increasing education and awareness. smith says residential staff have -- members have held meetings with residents about what happened. they're talking about personal responsibility and personal conduct. and the rally set for today she says was the students' idea and not the school's necessarily. reporting live in st. mary's at the college, craig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. it was a dramatic first day

avenue to get through. people are being turned away and using city streets or using side streets. but i don't think that's a good idea really. i think you should stay on the dumbarton bridge and make a left on willow road and just go -- use willow as your alternate and not university. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza because of an earlier crash that's gone. the traffic has been backed up all the way out to the may so it's heavily than it normally is. you need more time. give yourself extra time if you're trying to make that meeting or whatever on time. you need an extra 15 or 20 minutes this morning to add to your commute. and in contra costa county that motorcycle accident has cleared on highway 4. the traffic is also not that bad after the crash. it's always slow in antioch. 680 is okay from concord to walnut creek. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. very good morning to those of you stuck in the fog for the last three months, yesterday was good. today will be even better on the coast because the coast is

clear. temperatures are really mild. i mean not only inland but also along the coast and in the city. temperatures are already running in the 60s for many. so it's going to be sunny and warm day. however, this will be the warmest day of the week. by this time next week, i'll be talking about rain. so enjoy that weather while you can. if you like cooler weather, hang on. the weekend will be much cooler. clear skies, warm to hot. tomorrow patchy fog. i think enough will come back to the coast. it will be much cooler there tomorrow than today. it will still be warm hot to inland but not as much. big drops in the temps. probably 20 degrees. not sold on the weekend rain but i am on early next week. more of that in a minute. these are current temps in the city. ocean beach is 62. china basin 66. everybody in between is in the 60s. you know it's going to be a warm day in downtown san francisco and for much of the city. so again head out to ocean beach or anywhere you go will be nice today. high pressure is here. there's not a breeze at all. 50s and 60s. if there's any breeze it's in the higher elevations and probably out of the east or

here comes the cooling trend with the weekend always in view. more cooling on saturday. increasing clouds sunday. could be light rain but i think mainly just a big drop in the temps. retailers make it a bigger than expected treat for halloween. the average american plans to spend a little more than $72 on halloween candy, decorations and costumes this year. that is $6 more than last year. and that's apparently because 70% of americans say they plan to celebrate halloween this year which is up more than 6% from last year. let's check in on the numbers. pretty good gains there. a live look at the big board. dow jones up 107 points to 11,298 following a lead of many ever the european markets and the asian markets overnight. still optimism on some european hubs for the debt crisis there. that is what seems to be carrying stocks this morning and this week. and we discuss the details. the world's largest online retailer just unveiled the

welcome back to the morning news. dow jones up more than a hundred points and amazon stock up about $8 a share after giving out the details of its new tablet. time 6:56. new this morning details about two suspicious fires in antioch overnight. the first reported on loan tree way at 4:45 this morning. the second on madrid lane 15 minutes later. both fires were outside of homes. investigators say they've responded to several suspicious dumpster fires in the area in the past couple of weeks. now they want to know whether those fires are connected to the two that occurred overnight. it's coming up on 7:00. we want to go back over to sal
