>> if i could do it differently i would. but there it is. >> reporter: he added the point was black empowerment but it has now been canceled. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. new information tonight about the death of a young girl hit by a car right in front of her mother. ktvu's robert handa joins us live at the scene in east palo alto where he learned more information about the driver. robert? >> reporter: well, there is new information about the driver that may increase the belief by some people that this could have been avoided. here that intersection there has been a stream of people coming to the memorial to share grief and anger. >> reporter: pings of the six- year-old are triggering a range of emotions. police say after 8:00 a.m. the young girl was walking to school when she was commit killed by a driver at bay road at gloria way.

>> so fast. hit and all -- i got closer. shaking. i was like oh, my god. i said larry, larry, i think the child was hit hard. >> i didn't want to see no more. shoes laying in the street. i started praying that she make it. but she didn't. >> reporter: police questioned and released the driver, alisha whiteparker a teacher. police called the collision an accident pending a investigation. there are reports she has convictions for speeding, driving while texting. >> common sense. >> reporter: police don't believe the accident nearby on university avenue earlier was a factor. the motorcycle rider was killed by a driver in the suv chased by police. that driver was arrested.

friends of the girl, the investigationric secondary. >> i am in shock. i see that litter girl every day at my daughter's school. feel sad. >> we have not been able to reach alisha whiteparker and tonight the superintendent had no comment except to say there will be counselors that school. live, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. in the wake of two rapes at st. mary's college, students and teachers rallied today to raise awareness about sexual assault. >> her being drunk, being your girlfriend is not an excuse. >> police tell us the two rapes occurred in two different dorms with the most recent last sunday and the victims knew their attackers. the two suspects are students. today the san francisco sheriff's office sought a court

order to feed a murder suspect who is on a hunger strike. he is accused of killing two in january. he was hospitalized two weeks into a month long fast. >> he is attempting to commit suicide. >> he says san francisco general haven't intervened because they say he has no mental health issues. we have breaking news now happening in san francisco. we have learned about a shooting that happened a half hour ago. here are live pictures from the scene. you are looking at a crime scene area and police are talking to witnesses right now. two people were shot in a car. one was a juvenile. this is taking place at geary and baker. again, breaking news in san

fund. that missing part is 40%. that is what is guaranteed to schools under proposition 98. but administrators say lawmakers moved money around, changed the side of the general fund. made the pizza smaller so schools are still getting 40% from a smaller pie. >> reporter: $10,000 per classroom. that's what they are fighting for in their lawsuit against the state. >> standing up for children and providing a greater education. >> reporter: san francisco school superintendent joined other administrators to announce the lawsuit this morning. the fight is over the budget when revenue was diverted to too fund governor jerry brown alignment plan. >> we believe once the court reviews the facts they will come to the conclusion they

vehicle license fee money to use for public safety grants. planning a one day strike over canceled pay increases negative 17 at cal state east bay and dominguez hills. the union for professors say the university weather hild pay increases in 2008 and 2009 and they say they are not satisfied with current contract negotiations. the salaries of executives was the topic of a hearing today. it sparked criticism when it appeared a salary for san diego state's new president. four more presidents are set to retire within the next year. >> we have seen the outstanding candidates. we couldn't bring to the pool for consideration, during a surge, given they were making

too much elsewhere today. >> the chair wants to see the states' performance standards. google is on a spending spree over seas. it is building three data centers in hong kong, taiwan and singapore at $200 million. it will be the first google owned facilities in asia. unemployments fell last month. though job growth overall remains at a stand still. 237 cities saw the rates fall in august. in california yuba fell from 18.6% to 17%. modesto dropped to 16%. stocks ended a winning streak with a sell off today fueled by concern over european debt. dow dropped 180 points to close

at 11,010. a group of six masked armed robbers opened fire at a gas station this morning. happened at valero around 330. they got away with cash and items from the store. one robber shot at a customer but missed. it's similar to a robbery tuesday morning at a 7-eleven. >> four police departments are about to get a boost in their ranks. >> a huge statagy to ensure peace. >> barbara lee and leaders announced police services. the grants pay for the salaries and benefits of officers for three years. oakland says it plans to hire 25 new officers with $10.7 million they are receiving.

work for us as a whole. >> reporter: the port of oakland is excited for more growth since only 1% of american businesses actually export their products. live tonight, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> they expect to approve a plan to keep the redevelopment agency going. it may have to pay the state $6.2 million to keep the agency open. concord is considering a tax or fee on downtown businesses to help pay for redevelop programs. a high school students received a huge honor today from the president of the united states. >> there are students like will who launched a non-profit that gives loans to students who want to start their own business. >> president obama was using will as an example of teens making a difference in their

communities. he student says they were stunned by the shout out. >> my mom was speechless, almost fell down. my dad was happier than normal.
