this is happening at schnitzer steel. we'll stay on top and bring you new details as we get them. a gas leak force the evacuation of a pleasant hill neighborhood this afternoon. pg&e tells us an excavator at roof and viking hit a three- inch gas line this afternoon. it happened very close to three schools. the valley view middle school and college park high school. about 30 minutes ago, pg&e crews were able to cap the gas leak but you can see there all of the people who were trying to evacuate the area. the evacuation order has now been lifted. ktvu's jade hernandez is live on the scene with details. first off, we are live at ruth and viking drive. we can show you, frank, just where this leak happened. it's down the road and across the bridge. we can also show you right now pg&e crews working at this hour. that line has been capped but, of course, pg&e still out here. now, police told us that we

arrived at the pipe leaking had been capped and a lieutenant says that residents were being allowed back in the neighborhood. i want you to take a look at news chopper 2 video. the leak affected three nearby schools. we spoke to one mother whose son plays football at the school. she received a call. her son tried to assure her everything was under control and that's just what pleasant hill police told husband we arrived as well. a pleasant hill police say that subcontractors working for pg&e pierced a gas pipe. that leak began around 2:25 just as school was letting out. some time after 3:00, pg&e capped the line. >> my son just called. he told me that the gas main is leaked and everybody is out and everything is under control. >> there was thought of doing

you. >> san francisco fire crews used car carbon dioxide gas to put out a manhole fire. the spokesman said that service to most of those affected was back on in about 40 minutes. >> we are getting a generator down here. we're going to get the last 282 customers on to a generator and while we spoke to investigate exactly what happened here. >> there is no word on what started the fire or how long that generator may be needed row main lettuce is being recalled here because it may be contaminated with listeria. ktvu has more on what is covered by the recall. >> reporter: the at the same timed produce was processed at the plant behind me.

the produce is going all over the nation. today, they recalled all the bags voluntarily after one bag was found contaminated with listeria. at san juan. >> the f.d.a. called us and asked us what we were going to do. we said we were going to recall this problem. >> the owner of this farm is recalling roughly 2300 cases of chopped lettuce. extended safety measures are in place. >> we are testing products, being audited all the time. we are testing it at our plant and, you know, we are sanitizing every day. >> reporter: the recall involves true leaf farms chopped row main lettuce with the used by date of september 29th and box code of b did 56.

more now on the breaking news, a fire burke in west oakland. you are looking live here from news chopper 2 at the schnitzer steel metal shredding facility. fire broke out in the neighborhood of an hour or so ago. we do have some new information. so far, no evacuations have been ordered. there is no shelter in place and judging from the pictures we have been monitoring now for some time it appears that firefighters here are making some progress. if you are not familiar with the schnitz he will steel shredding company, it is in west oakland right next to the port of oakland and right next to the oakland estuary. we're going to keep news chopper 2 over head. we have a reporter on the scene gathering information and we will hear from that reporter coming up at 5:30. there is a classroom controversy brewing over saying bless you after someone sneezes. a teacher was well within his rights to tell students to stop

daughter. >> reporter: emotions are growing. the girl's mother is talking to her about anger, sadness and how she plans to seek her own justice. family and friends of the samora family planned to gather this saturday to celebrate her birthday. she was walking to school with her family yesterday morning when she was hit in the crosswalk at bay street and gloria way. her mother, guadalupe with a friend translating said that she could not have made it without the emotional support. >> i'm very sad. i'm very happy with all the support. i'm thankful for everybody helping me in my hard time i really appreciate everybody coming out to me to reach me and may god bless everybody. >> reporter: but guadalupe is also angry about what happened. the drive, 49-year-old parker, a local teacher never slowed

announced the arrest of a 15- year-old boy in connection with the shooting death of a restaurant employee. 22-year-old gaspar bushtak was shot to death behind the hogs restaurant. investigators say it's likely that the shooter mistook him for a rival gang member. the suspect was already in juvenile custody on an unrelated case and has now been booked on charges including homicide. san francisco district attorney george gascon today led a summit on stalking. the event was a training for police officers, child advocates. the summit also focuses on developing threats to children. >> they have been victim of cyber stalking. that's a growing problem and that's a problem that we need to come together as a communities and figure out a better way to deal with. >> reporter: four million americans are the victim of stalking every year, he says.

this comes right before domestic violence month. the scandal of solyndra has drawn a lot of criticism to the obama administration. rob roth has visited another solar power industry. >> reporter: well, many members of congress says that's a symptom of the solar industry but some are saying not so. this is a solar panel installed for free and charges customers for the power. the scandal has not darkened the public's perception of solar. weaver done some polling results for consumers and consumers are still very much in favor of solar power. much of this discourse, i think, is working itself out in washington but we have not seen it >> reporter: people we spoke with say that solyndra has not put a dent on the concept of solar energy.
