juvenile ages 17 to 22 years old today were arraigned on several charges. including street terrorism and murder. >> we hope the conditions are right for the trial to take place soon. the district attorney's office wants all of the suspects to be tried together. prosecutors say some of the 60 to 70 witnesses that gave grand jury testimony were teenagers, many were the scared to testify. >> even one mother refused to bring her son because of the psychological toll it's taken on him. >> i hope they change their mind as this case progresses. >> this is a hodgepodge of separate prosecutions that have been thrown together in a matter which simply doesn't fit. >> reporter: district attorney george gascon told us the case

is not an appropriate one for his office to seek the death penalty. prosecutors say a seventh suspect is wanted on murder charges but is still at large. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu. two teenagers were hurt and a driver is in serious condition after an accident late this afternoon near san leandro high school. police say a woman was driving on bancroft avenue when she hit the two teens. her car then jumped the curve and hit a tree. the woman may have had some type of seizure or another medical problem. the teens injuries are not believed to be life threatening. today crossing guards were helping students cross the street. guards will be present from 2:00 to 4:30 every school day in the afternoon. the district along with police and the public works department

will offer their safety recommendations at tuesday's city council meeting. a disabled man who was badly hurt in a fire in vallejo has now died. it's a story we first brought you live at 6:00. the man was just 39 years old. his name has not been released. officials say he called 911 saying he was trapped in bed when his mobile home caught fire. one firefighters suffered burns to his head and face during the rescue. investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire. dozens of officers in camouflage are still searching the mendecino forest for a suspect who's been able to avoid them now for a week. eric rasmussen with the increasing cost of this man hunt. >> reporter: the sheriff says it's already cost thousands of dollars. the sheriff, other agencies working with top guns from the u.s. marshals office, he says there's no turning back now now

that the this suspect tried to shoot three deputies. it looked more like a military operation in fort bragg on day 35 of the man hunt for eric vasler. the largest team yet loaded up and headed into these woods knowing vasler opened fire on a team of three less than 24 hours earlier. >> he and his friends have been on this terrain with bicycles and quads and motorcycle all their lives. >> reporter: this man who didn't want to show his face says vascell knows the woods well but so do the especially trained officers. >> this is not working in oakland and san francisco, this is more urban. this is definitely in the wood. when you go in there you won't see or hear a thing. >> it's all going to depend on mr. vascler. based on what he did yesterday

we're very apprehensive if we can do a safe surrender. >> reporter: neighbors took these pictures of the vehicles. >> i don't think we've ever been closer to where we are right now. >> reporter: the sheriff today told me they issued another one of those reverse 911 calls to warn residents in the area, officers will be going door to door. they do think that vascler is still in the area. our coverage continues online on ktvu.com. we posted more information on the search for eric vascler including raw video of the military style preparations. a ucsf police officer is taking a man into custody accused of shooting the president of the hell's angel motorcycle club. the arrest happened yesterday after authorities noticed a

suspicious car. the man identified the man inside as ernesto manuel gonzalez. he is now being held in jail. a man who allegedly attacked a female jogger is now in custody. the woman told police she was able to break free and then called 911. officers arrested the alleged attacker a short time later. park police say if you have any information about this case please give them a call. the court has granted a request by accused serial killer naso to be unshackled during court. naso is representing himself in court. the judge now says he will allow naso to have his hands free so he can write and take notes. naso is accused of killing four women in northern california in

the 1970s and 1990s. the pentagon says military chaplains may now perform same- sex marriage ceremonies following the end of the the don't ask don't tell policy. chaplains may participate in any private ceremony on and off a military base. it adds that a military chaplain is not required to perform same-sex marriages and that participation does not mean the pentagon endorses such ceremonies. a drop in patients is forcing eden medical center to cut its staff. eden medical center is located at castro valley. the hospital will lay off some of its 1,200 employees. the hospital says less than 5% of the work force will be let go. employee hours may also be cut. the move is expected to take place sometime next month. eden medical center is owned by sutter health. another hospital system is booming. catholic health care west posted $917 million in profits

for the 2011 fiscal year which ended june 20th. that is up from 495 million the previous physical year. the health care system has 10 health care offices. an investment income played a big role in the boost. a private school in el cerrito is running out of time from turning their classrooms over to a bank. parents and teachers are scrambling for ways to keep their schools open, rob roth has the story. >> reporter: the schools are now closed for the weekend, but the worry is that this private school is in such dire straits straits may close for good. >> the idea of closing wind

>> california has pulled out of a 50 state settlement over foreclosure abuse by banks. california attorney general harris today said she will not agree to the settlement. the deal is being worked out between federal officials, state attorney's general. it is supposed to settle claims of poor mortgage and foreclosure charges but the impending deal is inadequate. leaders are celebrating the -- the rebuild hunters point is set to reopen in three months. officials say 1/3 of the people working on the $62 million project are residents. >> i can't wait until they actually finish all of the constructions and see the new apartments and the new homes and the people with smiles on their faces that are ready to move in. >> it is the first of eight dilapidated projects that are

in county prison. the state's political watchdog says it fears some people may never get any of their money back in allegations of fraud that have rocked sacramento. the fair political practices hear from people who said derky siphoned funds. >> all of the money is present in all of our accounts including ones that look like derky didn't touch. there might have been one or two accounts that she did not touch. but she seemed to have touched most of them. >> her attorney said her client alone lost more than $700,000. it sent a plume of smoke over oakland, and tonight there's new information on how bad that fire at a scrap planet was. >> reporter: all that smoke spewing from the recycle yard

was burning plastic from junk cars not yet stripped down to metal. for most of us burning plastic sets off health concerns. >> especially if it's plastic, there's bad things in plastics all of it. i think people have the right to know what's going on around them because the winds can blow that stuff any where. >> my next door neighbor came to ask if our building was on fire because it smelled so bad in their office. >> reporter: oakland fire says the big boom had two major components. >> steamed mixed in with the smoke. the water before it can get down to the seat of the fire was turning to steam and creating smoke creating what people thought was smoke. if we thought it was toxic to the general public we would have called an evacuation order.

>> the most serious types of health effects from exposure to those types of pollutants usually comes from much longer exposures than from a fire. >> reporter: welsnitzer will be fine. if it was an honest unavoidable mistake the answer is no. but if it could have been avoided then a fine is in the asking. the state alleges the shops owner of sneaking cars past smog tests by using an illegal process called clean plugging. it's when another car is used to generate a clean test. lieutenant governor gavin newsom says the federal government is sitting on more than $5 million meant for the nation's ports. >> we in california generate the lion share of that revenue.

but we get the minimal amount back because they've allowed again that surplus to grow without reinvesting those dollars. >> reporter: the federal harbor maintenance trust fund could help pay for dredging and maintaining the port of oakland. every year customers in california pay fees that go into that federal fund. the city of berkeley is handing out free helmets to cut down on bicycle injuries. the helmets can be picked at the city's health department. the bay area's healthiest workplace is one many of us are familiar with. two business publications named san francisco airport the bay area's healthier large employer. sfo officers it's workers yoga and zumba classes and a range of free medical screenings. the giant tree fell across the trail of 100 giants the

trail is closed until the debris is cleaned up. the u.s. forest service says people can visit other areas in the giant secoia national monument and see the famous trees, they can be seen from other locations in the park. that is kind of a sad story. because from the looks of that tree it's probably a couple of thousand years old and those redwoods live a long time. on that note we have a lot of clearing. the bluegrass festival going on out there. as it comes in tight you can see most of the activities at the bluegrass festival up in this area. our temperatures at the park in the mid-60s. over the weekend it's going to be a nice weekend a lot like today. these were the highs from today. the temperatures have been coming down each day for the last few days since that spare the air day a couple of days ago we've been cooling. the trend continues, slightly cooler tomorrow. lots of 60s on this map
