fort bragg live. onto other news and three people are dead tonight after a particularly violent car crash that happened near the nimitz freeway in oakland. kiro-7's eric savidge is live in san leandro to explain why police were chasing this car when this accident happened. >> well, investigators say that the people in that car stole falcon this food max store, but when an officer tried to stop the car in apartment, the driver took off and head towards the freeway that is just a block or so away from here. headed north on 880 towards oakland. police were in pursuit and minutes later there was a deadly crash. the violent crash currentled this 1990 buick sedan, the car slammed into a concrete divider and burst into flames. three people inside were killed on impact, one woman survived. >> we found some of the parties ejected or partially ejected, which tells us as collision investigators that they were improperly restrained inside the car. >> reporter: this early morning

accident happened on the 98th avenue off-ramp from 880 in oakland. investigators say this car was traveling fast when it lost control on the curve and if it you look closely, you can see it was split into two pieces. san leandro police say they were chasing this car when the crash happened. they say an officer saw the car driving erratically through the parking lot of this food max store and tried to pull the driver over, but the car took off and police pursued. after the crash, investigators searched the car. >> we did find some beverage containers for alcoholic beverages, however we do not know if impairment is an issue. >> reporter: investigators say the three people killed were a 27-year-old man, a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. the woman who survived the crash was taken to highland hospital in oakland with life- threatening injuries. and san leandro police tell me they will do an administrative investigation into the chase and crash from early on this morning. but a lieutenant did tell me this afternoon he believes that

the officers involved followed the department's pursuit policy. live in san leandro, eric savidge, kutv chaps. we have updated information tonight on an amtrack train accident that injured 39 people in contra costa county last night. it's a story we first brought you live on the 10 news last night we know 37 patterns and two amtrak crewmembers have all been released from hospitals. police say a big rig was crossing the train tracks east of brentwood near discover bay when the train hit it at about 7:30 last night. that crossing there has no gates or warning lights. d-ray and parker of the big rig were not injured. amtrak tells ktvu news that the ntsb will not be investigating this crash. a wandering sea lion is recovering after making its way across the bay shore freeway. rescuers say the sea lion apparently crossed all lanes of highway 101 in burlingame

before ending up in a dix flare the broadway off-ramp. highway patrol closed that afterramp for two hours so the mammal center could corral the animal. they are try treating the animal for injuries including trauma to its jaw. a wet forecast is predicted in the bay area. calfire begins to pull back on its wildfire staffing. >> reporter: we're seeing sun for the first time today. go figure of the calfire keeps its air tankers in two locations in the bay area, one in morgan hill and the others here at the santa rosa airport. it's looking like there will be an early end to fire season. >> this is the only area that is full of dry -- . >> reporter: there are a few perks to having a home near the edge of civilization. >> back here you are out in

the country. >> reporter: there aballgame drawback too, fire danger. >> that would probably go up quick, because it looks try. >> reporter: she is probably in the clear for another year, because change is in the air. those gray clouds are bringing in an early rainy season. >> it does mean that the possibility of heavy fire activity in the wildland circumstances goes down. >> reporter: calfire is starting to hang up the helmet. little by little staff is being phrased out and there will be fewer tra trucks after next week's predicted rainstorm. the pullback is a few weeks earlier than normal. as fire seasons go, this year is mild. lightning strikes parked some small fires, but a wet and cold spring and summer kept the fire danger low. the numbers put it into perspective. an average fire season has 4872 wild land fires statewide with more than a 150,000 acres burned. in 2010, there were just over

paramedic anthony valerio along with 28 others are added to the memorial in sacramento. their names were unveiled in a memorial wall in san francisco. >> turning now to election 2012 a republican presidential candidate rick perry focused on health care and social security. in a string of campaign appearances in new hampshire today -- . >> if you are a mid-career young american, or if you are a young person just starting in the workforce, you know that that program is not going to be there. so republicans are about fixing things and we have a broken system of retirement with our social security. >> perry says americans need to have an honest conversation how to transform and fix social security and promises if elected he would try to wipe out the healthcare reform law. the texas governor says that he is open to sending u.s. troops to mexico to help fight drug

cartels. perry compared the situation in mexico to that of colombia. several hundred us military personnel are in colombia in an effort to fight drug trafficking and terrorism. in this weekly address president obama urged congress to pass the jobs bill. >> economists have said that this jobs bill would boost the economy and spur hiring. how would you be against that? especially at i time when so many americans are struggling and out of work? >>. the president said that some republicans have said that they support parts of his jobs plan. he asked them to explain their objections or come up with their own proposals. dog lovers in san francisco are considering their options for the city's next mayor with the help of a forum. several candidates, including jeff daichi and leland yee took part in the forum. candidates discussed issues including dog play areas at- risk of closing. dog advocates say the issues are important because one in three city households in the city has a denying.

the dog political action committee or dog-pac said it expects to endorse a candidate by next week. bicycle advocates are calling for the city of oakland to repair a popular road in the oakland hill where's a man was killed a week ago. 53-year-old allen lee was riding with others when one of his wheels got caught in a crack. lee was thrown into the path of an oncoming car and died. crews are assessing the road and public works officials are meet on it next week. thousands enjoyed music in golden gate park today and there were some big-names on the bill. this equipment and all of the firefighters here are the same ones who have served this peninsula city for years, but now they are working under a new fire department. we'll tell you what prompted the change, coming up. also more casualties from yesterday's drone attack in yemen, one of those killed is connectedded to an attempted terrorist attack on the u.s.

there is a new fire department on the peninsula tonight as ktvu's allie rasmus tells us that after 82 years the city of belmont has its own fire department again. >> i have worked for the belmont and san carlos. >> reporter: now gary jacobs and the 23 other firefighters in this group will continue working in the community as members of new belmont fire department. >> we see the citizens on a daily basis. we see them in good and bad and we have a loyalty to this community. >> reporter: belmont and the city of san carlos use have one shared fire department, but after 32 years the city split? >> it wasn't like a divorce exactly. >> reporter: san carlos' city council considered a plan to privatize its fire services, but decided join with redwood fire. the city of belmont struck out on its own. >> we came to an agreement how you divide the equipment and vehicle. >> reporter: the 24 firefighters who used to be

part of the belmont/san carlos fire department were arch in the belmont-only fire department. all of this equipment and the truck are the same ones that have been working on the peninsula for years. the biggest change the department had to make was changing the name on the outside of the trucks. >> they are going to be focusing on one community instead of two. >> reporter: the change came with a cost for firefighters. >> we said we would take 10% out our salaries to move forward. >> reporter: while it's funded with property taxes for now, the chief says in this economic climate, there will always be economic uncertain, and continues to adapt to survive. an oakland-based group is giving high marks to counties as they prepare for an influff of jail inmates. nonviolent will serve their time in jail and the group curb

aaron bassler. chronology of this case began august 11th, when matt koleman was shot in rockport by then an unknown gunman. dna evidence at the scene has confirmed that aaron bassler was at the scene. >> interviews with family members since the homicide confirmed that bassler was in rockport at the time of this initial homicide. on august 27th, fort bragg councilman jere melo was killed in a senseless and witnessed homicide. the witness identified bassler as the shooter. district attorney obtained a warrant for bassler for both homicides and bassler has been an armed, fleeing felon for the last 36 days. mendocino county sheriff's offices and fort bragg police department immediately assembled a team of officers to search forever bassler, but we

were greatly hampered by bassler's great knowledge of the area and our ability of not knowing where all the trails and roads and hiding spots were. as you know, we have been close to bassler several times. the last time being two days ago, september 29th with bassler engaged the alameda s.w.a.t. team 16 miles east of fort bragg. between 7:00 p.m. on thursday evening, and 4:30 yesterday, another burglary occurred. it was reported in an unoccupied shop, 13 miles west. a deputy and lt. for the mendocino county sheriff's office responded and met with the landowner who learned that ammunition and calibers were .308, .22 and .270, beer, miscellaneous food items, two compasses, matchs, and size 12 boots were stolen

from this burglary. the stolen item were very consistent with the pass burglaries that we have placed bassler as committing. several items were taken for fingerprinting to occur at the crime lab. a peoplena city police officer, who is here today, thank you very much, joe. and his partner, willow, followed a trail of the burglar due to the darkness, the dogs were called off and the information was relayeded to the command center. the command center analyzed this new information and the location of the burglary and used the information to plan today's operational plan. today's operation included embedding tactical teams, along trails and logging roads that the suspect was known to traverse and areas which we predicted he may be traveling. at approximately 12:23 this afternoon, a three-man sacramento s.w.a.t. team were surveilling heavily

wooded trail area approximately two miles from the most recently reported burglary. they observed the suspect walking towards their location on the logging road. this property is a large parcel of property owned and managed by campbell hawthorn timber company. he was carrying an assault rifle if his right-hand. the team engaged bassler and observed him fall to the ground. the suspect did not fire any rounds during this engagement. the s.w.a.t. members advanced on the subject and find no signs of life. medical units were not simoned to the area due to the very obs signs of death that were observed. the subject was carrying a large backpack and black pane pack as well as his black clothing. i am unaware of what was inside the black backpack,
