it's monday, october 3rd. our top story -- the rain. we have team coverage on what will be the first significant rainfall of the season. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in the north bay where the pending rain is being met with great anxiety by grape growers. let's go to steve paulson first. >> all right. thank you. we had one rain. that did not do much. today's rain will. measurable amounts already into mendocino, getting closer to santa rosa. right now about bodega bay. for the rest of the bay area, it's not that bad. in fact there's mostly sunny skies to the south. the system -- for everyone else. amounts will be really light for some and there will be okay for others. i mean, to the senator aya, i

doubt more than a couple of 100ths fall -- i mean to the san jose area, i doubt more than a couple of 1/100ths fall. let's go to tara about the grape growers. >> reporter: you can see over here, these are the grapes that haven't been picked yet. but the rush is on to get them off the vine. we're here at the ranch that supplies chardonney wines. they've been getting about a few hours of sleep a night and then they come back out. according to official, at least one-fifth of the grape harvest is in. here at this ranch, the crop is

anywhere from 30% to 50% more than normal. the good news is that the weather has allowed for better flavor. the grapes with the thicker skin should be okay. it's the grapes for zinfendal that are thinner. here at this ranch, they say they are gonna to keep these grapes. even if it drizzles, they will work through it. we're live in napa, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. three people are dead after a weekend shooting at a party that happened in san leandro. kraig debro is at the police headquarters with an update on what happened and more questions about who approved this party. kraig? >> reporter: good morning, dave. police are saying the organizers of the party

organized it over the internet, not the first time they've seen that. but they say they do need the public's help to find out who shot these people. this all started sunday night, early sunday night. 19-year-old shanese keel is one of the victims and her two friends and one other woman, all were shot and killed. this happened around 1:30 sunday morning. these homicide victims and about 150 other people just left a warehouse and a green suv pulled up. >> unfortunately, san leandro has had some tragic events occur as a result of these parties occurring here. i believe these are very popular things right now. they are occurring all over the bay area. >> reporter: the gunman ran off

in an unknown direction. three other people were also shot and wounded. their i.d.s and conditions are not known. we're gonna talk to police this morning. we're expecting bun of the detectives to be in, try to talk to him about overnight details. one of the things we're working on is if the people who organized the party had a permit. that's one of the many details that police are looking in to. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. the fate of jailed american exchange student amanda knox is in the hands of an italian jury right now. this after knox gave a tearful plea for freedom overnight. knocks asked the italian court to set her free and overturn her 2009 murder conviction in the death of her british roommate. knox said, "i was not there. i did not kill. i did not rape.

i did not steal." an observer in the courtroom said several jurors and even some jurors were crying at the end of her statement. a jury decision is expected sometime after 11:00 a.m. this morning our time. closer to home, supporters of amanda knox are nervously waiting for that jury decision. our reporter rick price, telling us live from seattle, that those reporters stayed up all night and watched the italian proceeding. good morning, rick. >> reporter: good morning dave. good morning, everybody. the mood was emotional up there in the hotel as the friend of amanda watched rivetted that feed from the italian croom. there was barely a sound in the courtroom as amanda knox took the stand there. the emotion was evident, hands clasped, jaws tight, eyes shiny with tears. after amanda knox professed her

closer. for some it's not bad. just wait. our system is getting there. we start out under mostly clear, partly sunny skies. that's not the case for the -- for the north bay you can see already beginning to move in. reports of rain up towards ukiah, willits, haven't heard anything from the west. i imagine it's close. our system continues to work its way -- to work its way in. it will produce drops to the north and south -- south, far less to the south. i think everybody will get some rain out of this. but for areas to the south, it will take a while. it clouds increasing throughout the day, even though we do have some mostly cloudy skies for a few. it will turn cloudy. the heaviest rain will be in

the north. so for a couple of areas, say san jose south, you might get a couple of/100ths and then the upon -- couple of hundreds. here's our system by ginning to move through. you can see right there in that last frame, if you are south of that, you are like where are the clouds? well, they were getting there. i think the rain will start to move east and south. one system moves out. that's the one for wednesday. that's tapping in a lot of moisture and has a lot colder air in it. our system today, won't be bad. it will be okay. it will be the first rain for everybody. sun gives way for increasing clouds. rain moves in, 60s, 70s. santa clara valley but for others it will be in the 60s on

disenfranchisement of the american people. >> similar protests were held in boston, chicago and seattle. this is video of one in burlington development -- burlington, development. he is known as the geezer bandit. it's possible he may have stuck again. witnesses say the man in these surveillance images from a san diego bank pointed a resolver at a teller and ran off with cash on friday. he fits the description of the geezer bandit, who officials say is responsibility for 14 robberies across southern california. there's one more difference, the geezer bandit has worn a hat. the investigation into the shooting after 21-year-old in san francisco continues. the medical examiner's office says he was shoot six times

saturday night. he died later at the hospital. now, police responded to the scene after an alert from the shot spotter gunfire detection system. so far no one has been arrested. deputies were called to the home on azores circle saturday afternoon and found 23-year-old lance kusimonio dead. a woman told deputies she shot and killed him because he was an intruder who threaten her and her pregnant daughter. investigators say the two knew each otherby did not give us details about the nature of the relationship. do you order burgers and fries or fruit and a salad? we're on opposite ends here. the restaurants have been cutting calories. the question is are people buying it. and what caused this

7:23. a new study says unhealthy foods are still the top sellers at restaurants. despite a push for healthier options on the menu. the study finds while 47% of americans say they like restaurants to offer healthier items, like salads and fruit, only 23% tend to order them. the restaurants are saying people are buying the foods but the high fat, high sugary food, well, they are still the top sellers. a san francisco street is open this morning after being closed for 12 hours by a sinkhole. it was a two-foot wide ole found yesterday on 15th avenue between geary and clement. city officials say the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of a

the area. slow traffic in bay point, slow traffic in antioch. and then 680 to pleasant hill is getting busy. 7:25. let's go to steve. well, already some sun there. the system is on its way. there's a fine line between clouds and no clouds at all. it's starting to work its way into the city. also the north bay there's been rain reports coming in from sonoma county, there's the system aligning itself parallel to the coast of the once it gets there we'll go from mostly sunny to mostly cloudy. this system will weaken considerably. that's pretty good. when you start to see it lit up like that, and then a line stretching back into sonoma county. 50s on the temperatures, low to mid. 51 napa, 52 livermore. we do have mostly sunny skies.

pedestrians at school. allie rasmus is out there to tell us specifically what police will be looking for. >> reporter: we're outside addison elementary school in palo alto and while classes don't get started for another 45 minutes or so, neighbors say once it does, you will see a lot of people out here. a lot of pedestrians and cars. there are signs out here warning pedestrians this is a high-traffic area and they should use caution. "operation safe passage" starts this week. the goal is maximum enforcement for traffic violations especially in school zones. drivers who are speeding and drivers who are failing to yield to pedestrians, police will be looking for them. police will be looking for -- police will be looking for drivers who are texting and driving because and -- and because these traffic

violations also apply to pedestrians. police will be looking out for anyone jaywalking. we talked to some people say all of this is a good idea. >> not paying attention. as my daughter said, people need to be responded -- constantly reminded of the necessarity to watch out -- necessity. >> reporter: san jose police are also conducting their own "operation safe passage" stepping up enforcements in school zones in their city. police say this has been going on for several years. it's not a new thing but this week's enforcement period comes six days after a 6-year-old girl was killed. it happened at bay road and gloria way in least palo alto.

this woman's daughter was struck while going through the crosswalk. tomorrow, the city council will have a meeting about safety. and in palo alto and san jose, police will be doing -- will be doing maximum enforcements at this intersection. back to you. >> thank you. a woman and child escaped a house wire in vallejo. this happened on hands avenue and amador street. investigators think it started in the basement. but we still don't know the exact cause. that's under investigation. look at these pictures. firefighters say there's about $200,000 damage to that home. b.a.r.t. is back to normal at this hour, but there were major service delays last night. someone died on the tracks. someone stotted this at the colma station around 11:20 p.m.

protest in august is due in court. he's accused of trying to start a fire and reis sissing arrest at an august demonstration in san francisco. he pleaded not guilty. the protest -- the protests were in response to the shooting of the transient charles hill in july. local circumcision bans are now banned. governor brown signed the bill that was written in the attempt to the attempt to put a -- written when the attempt to ban circumcision was introduced. governor brown has said he doesn't know if he will sign a bill about state licensing. all dogs and cats are supposed to be licensed but only 16% have one. this would require shelters and

look. did i have -- i have my maps on san jose 17 northbound. we have some slow traffic coming in from the summit from the santa cruz mountains to los gatos and then 85. it's approaching 87. that's gonna throw some people out. we have slow traffic getting up to the los gatos area and saratoga. as you get into cupertino, the traffic is moderately heavy. 217 is slow. so the south bay is filing -- is filling in quite a bit. 280 is a better bet for you in san mateo county. let's go to some live pictures right now. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up for with a -- for about a 15 to 20-minute wait. we have slow traffic. let's go to steve. okay. already mostly sunny for some.

construction spending increased in august. the manufacturing sector expanded at a faster pace in september but, again, remains

the bodyguard, the personal assistant, the time line and then recounting the final moments of michael jackson's life. on friday, we had the -- we heard from the paramedic that responded -- was the first to respond and also the e.r. doctors at ronald reagan ucla. their testimony was critical because they had said that conrad murray had not told them that they administered propofol. and the paramedic said, had we got there earlier, we could is -- we could have perhaps saved his life. and conrad murray was peppered with questions. they asked if there were any medical conditions that michael jackson had? conrad murray, according to the testimony, said nothing. we expect to hear from more doctors in the e.r. conrad murray's ex-girlfriend was on the phone with him at

wildfire. it started saturday afternoon east of julieen -- julian. residents have been told to be ready to evacuate. there's concern the wind may shift and push the fire towards homes. the fire cause is under investigation. several controlled burns will take place tomorrow near drake's. the fires are part of a research area, specifically the showy indian clover. san jose is home to the state's largest skateboard. it's hit a bump in the road. the park is three years old and cost $600 million to build. san jose had enough to keep the park running through next month. >> the city was able to come up with money to keep it open in

we continue to update you on this breaking news in san francisco. there's been an officer- involved shooting. fire spokeswoman told us fire units arrived at 7:00 this morning and found someone stabbed and elderly man outside the residence. so the police officers went inside the residence. inside, they found another person, an elderly woman stabbed and then there was some sort of a confrontation and there was an officer-involved shooting. those three people have been taken to general, san francisco general hospital, very busy with three very seriously injured people. here comes lieutenant danger field on the right -- dangerfield on the right.

he's most likely gonna address the media and tell us what happened. i'm not -- we're gonna -- here we go. if he's gonna talk we'll listen in. this is lieutenant troy dangerfield. >> good morning. i may have to look at some of these note here is. this morning about 7:30 this morning at the corner of funston. there was a stabbing that occurred. officers respond to the call. when officers arrived, they found an elderly man in the doorway of the 600 block of that residence. they noticed he was stabbed and bleeding profusely. he had stab wounds to his forearm and hands. the officers continued up the stairway, where they found another female elderly woman, who was bleeding producely and had stab wounds to her upper body. it looks like they were life- threatening injuries. while they attempted to pull the victim from -- to an area safety for medical, they were confronted with the suspect who

was holding a knife in each hand above his head advancing to the officers. the officers used the extended impact weapon to stop the advance. it was infective. the -- ineffective. the officers then continued to clear the house and they found another female in the back of the house hiding. that victim was uninjured. this all happened about 7:30 this morning. it's an active investigation. that's although we know at this time. they do's peer to be related to each other. it's clear this guy had serious indent to hurt the people in the house as well as the officers when they tried to save these victims. that's all we know at this point. >> how did you get the call initial? >> the initial call -- >> so we're going to wrap up
