a homicide in hayward late yesterday. why police say they need the public's help in trying to solve the killing. the long wait is nearly over for iphones with apple. the announcement is just hours away. a professor from uc berkeley wins the nobel prize. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, october 4th. the hayward police department is asking for the public's help this morning after a shooting left one man dead. kraig debro is live outside the apartment complex with the unanswered questions

surrounding this investigation. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this is on tennyson road. behind me is a squad car. a couple of different people did not want to did on camera but said they heard their cousin's uncle was killed. we found out about this very early this morning. when i talked to police in hayward this morning, this happened at 8:45. you are looking at this live picture dash we'll show you that later -- picture -- we will show you that later. this happened last night around 8:45. police say they got several cars from people in the area saying shots had been fired. there was a man lying in the driveway. when they got here, they cored a man in the driveway. they did cpr. the paramedics did cpr. they have not been able to

police in san francisco investigating a deadly accident that killed a pedestrian. this happened at mission and excelsior. that's where an unidentified man was hit by a car about 7:00 last night. he died later at the hospital. there's no word yesterday on whether the driver will be charged in the case. it is 78:03. this morning -- 7:03. this morning a uc berkeley scientist can call himself a nobel prize winner. tara moriarty spoke with him this morning and has more on how he's handling the big news. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. you know, it's been a whirlwind foil -- for mr. perlmutter. there have been a lot of phone calls. it's not every day that a uc berkeley wins the nobel prize in physics. now. we were inside his home.

we listened as his wife talked to his excited parents in philadelphia. he found out about his win and could not believe it. he and his team in the late '90s found evidence that the university was expanding the galaxy is getting further and further apart. >> what's amazing here, you might expect that that would slow down. it's not. it's getting faster and faster. >> reporter: that something, perlmutter, says is the big mystery known as dark energy. he's trying to figure it out with researchers. who knows. another prize do be -- could be in the future. now, will share the prize with the other winners. he will take home around $250,000. he and his wife don't know how they will spend it.

it's unlikely. panetta says he will be pressing egyptian leaders to hold elections and quickly establish a civilian government. a truck bomb in somalia killed at least 70 people this morning. the truck blew up at a security checkpoint at the capital. at least 42 people were wounded. many of the victims were students and parents. a militant group linked to al qaeda has claimed responsibility for this attack. 7:15, president obama has proposed higher fees on airline tickets and taxing take-offs. it's part of a plan to cut the budget deficit. alison burns live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with the very aggressive campaign being launched today to try to block this. allison? >> reporter: that's right, dave. we're gonna be catching up with some of the top lobbyists for the airline industry here on capitol hill in just about ten minutes as they try to make the case to members of congress that president obama 'plan will

cost jobs ands dis-- and discourage people from trying -- flying. >> the airport transport association is launching this website that says 10,000 jobs will be -- will be lost next year alone if president obama's plan goes into effect and it says regional carriers will be forced out of smaller cities. the president's plan would raise the fee on airline tickets from the current rate of $2.50 to $5. that would go up 50 cents each other topping off at 7.50. the president wants to collect a $100 fee from the airlines for almost every take-off. the president is looking to raise about $36 billion with these new fees and taxes to pay for security improvements at airports and help pay down the national debt. i will have more on why the airline industry says it simply cannot afford it during my next

we're just hours away from a big announcement from apple. allie rasmus is in cupertino to tell us what apple is expected to univol and -- unveil and how it's creating a lot of buzz. >> reporter: good morning. this announcement is supposed to happen at 10:00 this morning here in cupertino. but the preparations started hours before that. the lights have been on in apple headquarters since at least 3:00 this morning. you can see there is about a dozen employees walking out of the building right now. and to give you an idea of how

many people they are expecting to attend this event, we'll show you an entire section of the parking lot here at infineon loop has been set aside just for the media. there's about a dozen satellite trucks. apple even set up a riser for the media all lined up side by side talking about what apple is gonna announce today. that's the big question, we don't know exactly what apple is gonna say. all indications are they are gonna unveil some kind of iphone. but the question is what iphone? there are also thoughts they could review the cheaper version of the 4 about a pay-as- you-go option or an updated 4. you can sigh in the picture.

closed since september 26th for what's been described as a minor update. it's scheduled to reopen today. the chestnut is scheduled to be open. in morning, the cell phone companies will file a lawsuit challenging the law about putting a warning on the phones about the radiation causing cancer. as of right now, there's no laws requiring these warnings. this morning a fatal shooting in san francisco is under investigation. police responded to reports of fire on franconia avenue around 9:40 last night. after the shooting the suspect was scene running into a house on holiday avenue. that person has been arrested.

so far no word of a motive and the name of the victim has not yet been released. san leandro police released a sketch of one of the men wanted in a weekend shooting that left three people dead, three others wounded. look at this man. >> the deadly shooting happened sunday morning in an industrial area of san leandro. the victims attended a tattoo party. that's where the host hires a tattoo artist to perform their work on the family guests. it's still not clear what led up to the fire -- gunfire. the narcotics task force has destroyed more than 5,000 marijuana plants. this is a picture of the

helicopter hauling away some of the plants. law enforcement teams say they found the plants in five secluded areas of the peninsula water sed and -- watershed. they estimate the street value is $1.5 million. 7:35. the u.s. supreme court has given a san leandro church permission to sue the city in a

governor jerry brown has signed a bill that will require the governor's office to give at least ten days' notice before acting on a clemency request. the bill is in reaction to former governor schwarzenegger's controversial decision just before he left office. he commuted the voluntary manslaughter sentence of estebon nunez from 16 years to seven years without notifying the victim's family. a new book out today claims to know who is responsible for the murders of b.i.g.

diego for a gunman blamed for several shooting. a man was injured after a bullet when through his car while driving on the 805 -- look at that bullet there -- he was on the 805 freeway yesterday morning. shots were also fired in the direction of a highway patrol officer. about 40 minutes later, on interstate 5, a bullet hit am ambulance. luckily, nobody was hurt in the ambulance. police are looking for the 24- year-old owner of a white chevy malibu. the former owners of a marin county shopping center are being asked to clean up of a chemical that was found underneath the fair and plaza. now, p.e.r.k. is a colorless liquid. they use it in dry cleaners. it's believed it can cause cancer. a dry cleaning business is low

the lieutenant tells me right now they don't have very much to go on. they don't know the man's name and they don't think they have any witnesses right now. this happened last night in south hayward at tyrell street. police say they got several calls last night around 8:45 about shots in the area. when police arrived, they noticed a man in the driveway. they came out and tried to revive the man, they weren't able to do that. i just talked to police and now they are saying they are not even sure the guy was shot. they just know he died. it could have been the shot and the death were not connected so the coroner will have to set that out, they say. meanwhile crime scene technicians and -- and

there is a community meeting tonight in san francisco's richmond district following an officer everybody everybody -- officer involved shooting. police say a 44-year-old man came with them after they were called to a stabbing on funston avenue and balboa street yesterday moving. an officer used a beanbag weapon at first but when that didn't work -- didn't work, the other officer shot the suspect and he died at the hospital. police say he stabbed his parents earlier that morning. his mother died at the hospital. his father is expected to stab. the motive is not known. a 6-year-old girl was hit by a car last week on bay street and gloria way. now, new crossing signs are already up. there is a crossing guard in

the area. extra safety measures will be discussed tonight. tonight zamora, the little girl killed in the crosswalk, she will be buried. her family held a memorial service for her last night. it was attended by about 400 people. she will be laid to rest in menlo park. police have identified the car who hit her as a local schoolteacher but so far no charges have been filed. 8:03. stanford hospital says it will vigorously defend itself against a $20 million class action lawsuit. filed after a security breach of -- breach of medical records. the medical records were posted on a commercial website for nearly a year. the class action lawsuit seeks

arrived on the scene at the home where panhandle -- where michael jackson was living, to put his time of death at his home. they felt he was basically dead on arrival at the hospital. that would be michael jackson, of course. once we heard from those two doctors, they both testified that dr. murray never told them about propofol. then we heard from some cell phone technicians talking about cell phones that came in. a certain cell phone that was said to be dr. murray. we expect the women dr. murray was talking -- was talking to, will potentially testify. that's where the prosecution contends part of the reason they believe michael jackson was basically aban -- abandoned

by his doctor. they contend while he was supposed to be watching michael jackson, he was talking with girls, it's alleged. they could call 27 witnesses. so far they've called 18. we expect to hear from michael jackson's children as well as these girlfriends. once the prosecution is done, dave, we'll hear from the defense team. there have been some good back an forths as they try to get some strongholds and get some positive moments from these prosecution. the whole trial expected to two weeks. i'm waiting for the jackson family to arrive. they are normally here by now. yesterday, janet jackson was in the courtroom and mom and dad

morning for answers after a little boy was hit and killed right in front of a neighborhood market in stockton. pam cook has more on the investigation and what's happening right now. good morning, pam. >> good morning. i just spoke to stockton police and they are still looking for the suspect car. now, it sounds like detectives have a good description of the car and possibly an identification of a suspect. but we've not been able to confirm that with investigators on the case this morning. here's what we do know, stockton -- stockton place say two women were having an argument outside of a market yesterday afternoon in stockton, when one of them jumped into a car. now, witnesses say the car was deliberately trying to run down a group of people. most of them were able to get out of the way but a 3-year-old boy was hit and killed. >> it makes me mad that the baby died. it was just a little baby. she had nothing to do with it. one witness who was inside the store at the time said the car hit the little boy head-on as

it plowed into the store wall and she says the store shook with the impact. now, police say the little boy's parents were not involved in the fight that apparently led to their child's death. now, the officer i spoke to just moments ago also says it's not unusual to have a lot of people in that area at the time. this incident happened at about 3:45 yesterday afternoon. so detectives most likely have a lot of witnesses to talk to. he also says when an innocent child is killed more people want to come forward with information. let's go back to dave. >> all right. thank you, pam. well, drug violence in mexico is spreading to the capital city. yesterday, police in mexico city found two human heads on a street near a military base. a message from one of the drug cartels was attached to them. this type of tactic has been common in other parts of mexico. but mexico city had been pretty
