allman. he is the contributor for a tv station called create tv. the man hunt is still on but police have found 4 fire arms, including a rifle. that one right there. all of this is happening as fear is creating turmoil as one school after another went into lock down mode. we have leave team coverage tonight. let's begin with ktvu's robert handa, who is inside the search zone. robert? >> reporter: it is still a tense situation. this is a typical scene out here. heavily armed officers that front and back of almost every street. at this hour the sheriff's department says search teams are going door to door. the sweep begin around homestead road, because officers surrounded a house this morning where they believe

the suspect might have ducted into. search teams say they believe he is on foot and considered armed and dangerous. a car he fled in was found abandon on wolf road and a rifle was found by the vehicle. about 7:00 a.m. witnesses saw him at the hewlett-packard building where he attacked a woman to try to take her car. >> the guy started running towards her and then -- punched her. so after punching her she fell on the ground, i saw two shots fired. >> reporter: now, back live here where the search continues. street by street. residents are staying inside or left the area and we have been told the woman who was shot

during the attempted carjacking here is still recovering and being treated at a hospital. more on her attack at 5:30. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. again the initial shooting happened this morning at a plant where the gunman worked. ktvu's maureen naylor tells us how it started and how workers say there was something different about the suspect. >> one man told me he noticed a change in shareff allman. saying monday he was talkative and tuesday wouldn't look anyone in the eye. we are at foot hill and stevens creek, the quarry is a half mile from here. we learned the coroner has not yet removed the bodies. >> reporter: it started at 74:15 this morning -- 4:15 this morning at the plant.

>> he briefly left the meeting, came back, now armed with a rifle and hand gun and that's when he opened fire. >> gunfire. lot of noise. >> reporter: we spoke with an employee who was inside. >> happened fast. very fast. everybody was running. hit the ground. i ran. >> for several hours family and co-workers waited for news. >> i did get reports one of my members is okay. he jumped out the window when the shooting happened. he is okay. i don't know if he is hurt but he is alive. >> he is okay. this father left with his wife and daughter, covered in dirt. >> reporter: another employee left with loved one whose said it was a happy reunion.

co-workers painted the suspect as disgruntled. h he had an attitude problem like we owe him. that's about it. didn't say too much. just like a chip on his shoulder. >> reporter: the sheriff's offense says any updates will come from this location. reporting live, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. today's man hunt forced schools to close while others went on lock down keeping students inside. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live after speaking with parents and neighbors. >> we are here at peterson middle school, on the edge of where the search was going on. students were supposed to get out at 1:30 but that did not happ. just in the last 15 minutes they wrapped up the process of

letting students out one by one and lof it had parents on edge. >> reporter: as police swarmed the neighborhood parents scrambled to track down their kids. >> this is very scary. >> reporter: she was able to pick up her son but police told other parents they have to sit and wait. >> i said can you go to the bath room, he said no. >> she sat in her car and showed us text messages from her son on lock down. >> he is saying do helicopters run out of gas. >> reporter: at least 3 school districts sent alerts to parents to keep their kids home. around 4:00 police and school officials let students at pertson out and required parents to sign for them.

victims. >> the pastors pleaded with shareff allman to surrender or call the church for help. people are in fear because of the shootings. police steaked -- staked out his home where his daughter was waiting for word. we will talk with neighbors and friends in 15 minutes. we are on storm watch tonight. what a difference the last 24 hours made. ktvu's ken pritchett, it looks different from how it looked yesterday, ken? >> reporter: yesterday the ground was soaking wet, there wasn't a bit of snow. now look at it a foot of snow on the ground all from one night from one early october storm. >> reporter: despite a closure of 80, caltrans kept the roads clear from snow, snow that was

coming down heavy. but even where the snow had not fallen, there was problems. >> a lot of oil on the roadway. makes it slippery. the driver of this truck and passenger suffered minor injuries after hitting a icy patch. >> for whatever reason he panicked, applied the breaks and lost it. >> reporter: in addition to snow, they caution drivers of 10 miles of road construction. once passed the construction and near the summit drivers can cake in quite a site, mountains covered in snow. >> i mean, it's great to get the ground cold. >> reporter: it received close to a foot of snow overnight. a good omen for a ski area that opens first in late october. soon it will add to what nature brought last night.

investigators have been searching for apartment here where shareff allman, a single parent lived with his dotter for a dozen years. they continue to come out carrying bags of evidence but are not telling us what they found. authorities drove away his daughter and other family members, including his ex-wife, he has a son with who have been sequestered inside since 8:00 a.m. >> reporter: did the police say anything? >> she said that's my dad. >> reporter: he said she had to run to the apartment because she knew shareff allman worked at the quarry and feared he was a victim. >> she looked frantic and scared. scared. terrified. >> reporter: from that point on deputies kept the daughter

to the death of a employee in january of last year. at 5:30, ktvu's robert handa will have the latest. authorities are looking for two boys who escaped from a youth detention center. a spokesperson said they jumpled the fence at the youth rehabilitation facility, which is known as the byron boy's ranch. it is a low risk facility. authorities say escapes there are not uncommon. all night long i kept hearing the rain come down. >> yeah. it was a nice looking storm. we have seen bigger storms but not early october. nice size storm. plenty of rein, inch in the heavier spots. showers still outside. danville, shower activity. looks like this is getting

community hall were counselors are on hand. >> reporter: two families in mourning tonight. those who lived with the victims and those who work side by side the victims and everyone of them given the opportunity to meet with grief counselors inside the community hall. >> we are all just kind of numb. >> reporter: they walked out as one group, one family. the emotion could also be heard and seen outside the limestone quarry. they held each other tight as they waited for word. >> i heard he was one of them. >> her brother in law, was killed in the shooting. he was a husband, father, grandfather who worked that limestone quarry for more than 20 years. >> good person. very good. very family oriented.
