temperatures will rebound under mostly sunny skies. be ready for it. here is sal. >> good morning, traffic off to a nice start. a little bit of slow traffic already. this morning's commute is going to be slow already in some parts of the west bay, but here in san francisco, it looks good approaching downtown. 61, let's go back to -- 6:01, let's go back to dave and pam. police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted an 18-year-old girl on the san francisco state university campus. it happened one week ago at the towers residence hall where we will find ktvu's claudia wong with how the attacker lured the victim -- claudine wong, with how the attacker lured the victim. >> reporter: this is the crime alert that is now posted when you come in and out of the building.

take a look on the door, you'll see the white poster sign there, letting people know what happened to this 18-year-old victim. here is what we know, it's between 8 to 10 on friday night. the victim who is not a student, came with friends to the towers to go to a dorm party, but the group was not sure exactly where the party was inside. so they are talking about it and the victim believes that the suspect overheard them. the man called out to her saying, "i know where you are going and you can come with me." she said she thought he was friendly enough going into the elevator with the suspect. as doors were closing, they asked her where she was going. she tried to leave that elevator, but the suspect grabbed her from behind. when the elevator stopped, she followed him out to a room because she thought that was where the party was. instead that's where the assault happened. she was able to get away, left the area, and found her friends. >> that kind of really scares me because i normally felt really safe here, whenever i wonder around, i feel like it's

a college campus and i should feel safe. i never really worry about these type of things. hearing this is just like really freaky. >> reporter: the suspect is described as 18 to 22 years old, five feet eight, 180 pounds, short hair, mixed race. anyone with information is asked to call police. claudine wong, channel 2 news. our time now, 6:03, residents in a sunnyvale neighborhood is relieved. we have more on what may have been behind the workplace shooting rampage in cupertino. >> reporter: of course, we can never know exactly what shareef alman was thinking -- allman was thinking, but he was having trouble at work and being scrutinized for safety violation. we're standing in front of the driveway where deputies shot and killed him about 24 hours ago. this is the driveway where news chopper 2 caught pictures of

deputies laying a tarp over his body. we arrived within minutes of the shooting. the santa clara county sheriff said three deputies, two male, one female shot at allman when he displayed his firearm in athreatening manner. the suspect showed him a gun a week and a half ago and joked about using it at work. >> he's like wow, you know, what's going on. and the whole time, he would like, you know, people at my job. and you know, he was messing with me. and then escaped to sunnyvale where he shot a woman as he

tried to steal her car. where was allman during that 24 hours during the man hunt. was he here in the sunnyvale neighborhood the whole time, again, perhaps we will never know. later on this morning, quarry workers will be talking about the shooting and also discuss when they will perhaps return to work. we will of course be there and let you know what happens. we are live in sunnyvale, ktvu, channel 2 news. lehigh plant is paying their employees while the plant is closed and they will pay for the funerals of the three people shot dead. a long-time truck driver is talking about the shooting rampage. he was shot in the arm pretending to be dead. he told shareef allman he would

no longer be there. and they are a part of the occupied sf movement. we'll show you a live picture right now of market street. just last night, police moved in, breaking up the encampment outside the federal reserve bank. officers said it was becoming a public nuance and a hazard. san jose may give the boot to protesters there. they could start arresting demonstrators as soon as tonight. about 15 were near the corner of east santa clara and fourth street. demonstrators are free to exercise their first amendment rights, however, it is illegal to camp out at city hall overnight. the nationwide movement against economic equality has caught the attention of president obama. the sit-ins and rallies first started with occupy wall street in new york on september 17. similar protests have since popped up as we know from the east coast to the bay area. the president says demonstrators are expressing

the frustrations shared by the american public. he adds the financial regulation bill that he proposes will increase oversight of the financial industry. our time now, 6:06, today is the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the war in afghanistan. coming up for you at 6:15, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom on how one republican presidential candidate is criticizing the way president obama is handling that war. also a new report out saying the military needs to do a better job of providing rabies vaccines for american troops bitten by animals. the study follows a death in august with a soldier from livermore, the first to die from rabies since the vietnam war. 643 soldiers in iraq and afghanistan, they reported being bitten by animals between 2001 and 2010. of the bitten soldiers, 117 were treated with the rabies vaccine. more apparent fallout from the bankruptcy of the fremont-

based solyndra. the program that gave the solar company up to $535 million loan is stepping down. jonathan silver announced yesterday he's leaving the department of energy because the loan program is ending. silver's resignation came the same day president obama defended the program. mr. obama said that there are going to be some companies that just don't work. tributes continue to pour in for apple co-founder, steve jobs. he clearly has fans around the world and they have set up memorials at apple stores. and iphone life magazine is declaring today, dress like steve jobs day. he was known for wearing jeans, black turtle necks, white tennis shoes, no matter the occasion. we checked the facebook page this morning about 3,000 people say that they plan to dress like steve jobs today. time now 6:08, let's check in with sal and get you out the door to where you need to go. how is it looking, sal?

>> it looks pretty good. traffic is moving along nicely around the bay area. so far so good anyway. let's look outside and take a look at some of these pictures. highway 4, you will see some slow traffic here coming up to the willow pass side. but it is mostly slowing down here and not in pittsburgh or bay point. 680 traffic looks pretty good, driving out to walnut creek. your morning commute looks pretty good in oakland so far on 880 and on 580. no complaints for you so far. trust me, people, they do complain when things are not going well. and so so far we are doing very well. and in the south bay or i would say this is more of the southeast bay, well, westbound 92 traffic looks pretty good getting out to the high-rise of the san mateo bridge. northbound 880 out here, there is a troubled spot on the right shoulder. a solo vehicle accident, a bumper in the left lane is a minor thing. if you are driving in the area, beware of it. >> all right, thank you, a very

happy friday. it's cold out there after yesterday's crazy system. and it left some rain, the record rainfall, the record rain all the way out to sacramento valley for us and the record cool temperatures for us all the way down to southern california. the clouds, most of the clouds, the rain is gone, but the cool air mass is in place. and it will be sunny today, we'll get into the low 70s. and then just move on up to the mid-70s on saturday and sunday and it does look warmer. the rainfall has been really good so far as you could probably imagine. 302% normal already for santa rosa with 1.78 san francisco. 1.33. they should only have .37. that's 359% normal. very heavy rain yesterday in the city with some minor street flooding. a third of an inch in san jose, .67, which is 203% normal. so far so good. 41 now up at the napa airport. a lot of 40s around. if you have any breeze, a little hint of a windchill,

packed with ethanol. witnesses say that the explosions sounded like bombs going off. and we want to show you video taken just about an hour ago. now, the entire town of illinois has been evacuated. it's located just about 115 miles west of chicago. but the glow of the fire could be seen from miles away. firefighters say that they will probably let this fire burn itself out because it is too dangerous to get close to the chemicals. all right, our time now is 6:15. it was ten years ago today that the u.s. invaded afghanistan. and the democrats and the republicans, they came -- they caming together in washington. and some of those lawmakers are coming to the to oppose the war, allison? >> reporter: that's right, dave. in the days leading up here to the 10-year anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan, we have been covering democrats and republicans this week as they speak out on the house floor against it. even though that president

obama's plan means 30,000 of the 100,000 troops there now will leave them this summer, there's criticism that the drawdowns are not fast enough. the mission is murky, and a cost at more than $1 billion this year alone, it's too expensive. >> this is a war that long ago became much more about money for the pentagon and defense contractors than about any real threat. where is our money going? afghanistan is widely considered to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. >> the republican presidential candidate, mitt romney, will deliver what they are call e.g. a major policy -- calling a major policy this morning. he says that he will be launching a full review of the afghanistan strategy during his first 100 days in office if elected. reporting live from washington, d.c., allison burns, ktvu, channel 2 news. over the past two years,

over 10,000 afghan civilians have died in the bombings. it's estimated at more than 10,000 for the militants. a government task force sparking controversy over mammograms could be getting ready to do it again this time involving men. the u.s. preventive services task force is expected to recommend that middle-aged men skip routine screenings for prostate cancer. several studies have raised questions over benefits of the test. now in 2009, the task force recommended that women don't start routine mammograms until the age of 50 instead of 40. our time now is 6:17, the taped police interview from michael jackson's doctor will be played for the first time publicly in court today. he talks about the final hours of michael jackson's life. yesterday, the defense questioned the coroner investigator collecting evidence at michael jackson's home on how the evidence was collected. now, she denied claims that she

made several mistakes. this morning, the nobel peace prize for 2011 were awarded to three women. they are the first democratic ellen johnson from the left there. liberian peace activist, she's in the middle, and the woman from yemen on the right there. they have been leading figures in organizing protests against yemen's president as part of the arab spring uprising. there have been some rumors that this year's peace prize might have gone to faceboo founder mark zuckerburg. but even he said to claim any meaningful role in the uprising would be extremely arrogant. 6:18, it's the time, back over to sal. i hear it's getting crowded at

the toll plaza. >> yeah, rather unfortunately, i kind of wanted to stay light all day, but it looks like we are not having that. at least not for now. it is a little bit crowded here. the fast track lanes are still moving through pretty well, but you know, it is a nice drive here once you get on to the bridge. you know, one of the oakland raiders, he actually watches us because he sent me a tweet, bragging about his commute and it's like 10 minutes. is he going to like practice? practice, man, practice. westbound 92 as you head out to the high-rise. it looks pretty good as you head out to the high-rise. so some people, they are on here already, bragging about their short commutes on a friday. and let's move along and take a look at this south bay where, you know, you will have a short commute too, although we're getting a little slowing here on 280 at 17, which is usual, but 85 and 17 are looking pretty good. as we move out here to the peninsula, no major problems on 101 or on 280.

6:19, hello steve. >> practice. >> it's practice, man. act like it. >> clear skies are out there, except for some patchy fog. and the valley area in napa is 36 degrees. burn. kenwood is at 39. our observer, kent said he just went to get gas, i had shorts on, but i had to wear a jacket because it's 43. i even saw 40 at fairfax. there is some patchy fog, down towards santa clara valley. 41 at the napa airport. a lot of 40s here. fairfield was at 43, now at 45. maybe there's a hint of a breeze. that one system, just a little tenuous rope that will be coming by to take the edge off a little bit. it'll be mostly sunny, a little warmer, but i expect the breeze to pick up. and the shade it will be cool. now, 60s, or upper 60s, and a few very low 70s with your weekend coming out into view right there.

good morning, west traffic on the bay bridge is getting up to a slow start here, getting down to a slower speed. metering lights have been switched on and all the lanes are slowing down. >> the state's banned on the train operators using cell phones is now permanent. a temporary ban was put in place after investigators found two separate accidents in 2008. the injured passengers, the state you will see will also require the transit agencies to be installing cameras to enforce the bands. >> the south bay religious leader is urging people to take over the vacant buildings as one way to give the homeless a

place to stay. the pastor has lead this group of people here it in san jose. he conducted prayers in front of the houses. he says that the banks, they now own it after foreclosures. saying these prompts, they could give refuge to people like dawn brown and her two sons. >> there are so many of them in this city that it is just amazing and there are families like that who are struggling, you know, out of work. it is really hard. well recently, the san francisco homeless advocates spent the night before the police forced them to leave. and it is estimated that there are more than 7,000 homeless people in santa clara county alone. well, cal, they will look to snap a losing streak after the big loss to the ninth ranked oregon ducks. here comes la michael james, heading out here.

say that they helped the victim by placing a tourniquet on her leg. what the woman told her about the shooting shocked her. >> he asked me for my purse, no, he snatched my purse, i pulled back, when i did, he told me to let go, he wouldn't shoot me. so i let go and he shot me twice. >> reporter: the suspect fled in a lexus after the shooting. police cautiously approached the car at the 35th avenue onramp to westbound 580, but they did not find the suspect inside. because the crash happened so close to the freeway that oakland police asked them to shut down the freeway while the search of the suspect in the area was conducted. it took about two hours to do that. >> we would rather inconvenience a few people, search this area and render it safe than leave someone out here who may pose a threat to the public or the residents in the area. >> reporter: and we're at the

crime scene, it was about 2:00 p.m. when this all happened. witnesses telling the employee that she saw the suspect chasing the woman across the street. so apparently it started across the street in the lucky parking lot. the woman is now being treated by paramedics, transsporting her to a -- transporting her to a hospital. she has non-life-threatening injuries from this crash and the shooting. reporting live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. we're learning more about the deadly confrontation between deputies and the gunman in the cupertino quarry shooting. our crew was the first on the scene after hearing shots ring out in the sunnyvale neighborhood. ktvu joins us live from outside the home where it all ended, tara? >> reporter: this is the driveway where sheriff deputies shot and killed shareef allman. we have counted more than two dozen bullet holes here in the garage and the minivan now parked in the streets. we have not heard how many

times allman was shot, but we're keeping on top of that and we want to let you know when we were here yesterday morning, it was literally over the fence, through these yards, less than half a football field away when the gunfire erupted. it's pretty chilling, showing a gun-toting allman walking in front of the gas station half a mile from where we are. perhaps we will never know exactly what set him off, but he was having trouble at work and being scrutinized for safety violations. the sheriff said that three deputies on patrol, they shot and killed allman at 7:30 yesterday morning off the way here after spotting him crouched behind that minivan. >> the suspect was armed and the deputies, all three did fire the shots. >> did they see the suspect do anything with the gun, pointed at them or anything? >> we believe that, you know, this is still pending the investigation, that we believe that he displayed the firearm

in a threatening manner. >> reporter: deputies say allman killed three co-workers, shooting six others at the quarry and then escaped to sunnyvale as he shot a woman trying to steal her car. later this work, quarry workers will be meeting and talking about the shooting and also when they will be returning to work. live in sunnyvale, ktvu channel 2 news. the lehigh cement plant will be paying their employees while they are closed and pay for the funerals of the three people killed. now, a long-time truck driver who was wounded is talking about the shooting rampage. mike tells the mercury news that he was shot in the arm and pretended to be dead. a union worker said a week ago he told him he would moronner represent him because of the alleged safe -- he would no longer represent him because of the alleged safety violations. apple is not planning a public memorial service for steve jobs. however, before his death, apple increased security at the

home of steve jobs, right here. apple security met with police earlier this week. that advance notice gave police officers time to plan protection for the home. it sits on a public street for anyone to walk up or drive up to the front yard. police have signed extra patrols to that neighborhood. now, more coming out this morning about thing management style of steve jobs. tech analyst talked to ktvu amber lee, saying that he was a micromanager who ruled by fear. he would fire them, then rehire them. >> and it was done to create a certain amount of fear so people were always off balance. whenever he would say jump, people jumped. and i mean they jumped about 10 feet. >> but that strategy worked. striving for excellence extended to his employees, business partners, and even the venders. just the past decade, apple

grew from one store to a worldwide empire. and now to find out more about steve jobs, including a timeline of his life, go to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com and click on the steve jobs tab. across california and the bay area here is the focus of the new crackdown. ahead at 6:45, who's behind the crackdown and the way that the bay area pot club owner plans to protest that plan. san francisco giant's pitcher, tim lincecum, is being sued by a former landlord. the lawsuit claims that lincecum trashed the three- bedroom mission district townhouse he was renting. lincecum has also been accused of staying past the expiration of the lease. the lawsuit seeks $350,000 in damages. lincecum is not commenting, but his agent calls the lawsuit frivolous. all right time now is 6:36, hey sal, did you tell all those cars to drive up to the toll plaza?

>> i did. but you know what, dave, it's good for them to get out there early, you know, because you never know, right? you get out there early and you're not rushing around. let's go out and take a look now. it's still a relatively good commute. so yes, you will be waiting a little bit, but it could get worse later on. so the cautious driver leaves 15 to 20 minutes early, deals with this. then when you get on to the bridge, it's not all that bad. one of the things i've been watching is the volume, the number, i'm sorry, of accidents. and there have not been that many. not that many collisions anyway. let's move along and take a look at interstate 880. the traffic here looks pretty good. northbound 880, after the avenue area, there is a troubled spot there with a crash on the shoulder, but they are still clearing it out. it is not really causing a big traffic jam. now, as we take a look at the peninsula, highway 1 is a little slow to pacifica, but not bad on 280 or 101 on the peninsula. and let's go to steve.

[ laughter ] all right, some of the chilly lows out there. a couple upper 30s are showing up. and near santa rosa and also some out here, i do believe. we just saw a tweet out there quickly. but 36 degrees for them here. kenwood at 39. fairfax checked in at 40.

woodside on the peninsula at 43. pleasanton and livermore at 44 degrees. a little cool for this time of the year. 41 also up in napa, a lot of 40s, fairfield, it says 45. even 44 out here in the valley area. santa rosa, that's officially outside 43. there are some upper 30s close to forest hill, and probably just north of santa rosa. 49 even at san jose. they were down to 47. mostly clear today. that little system is falling apart, but you know, i mean, there are a few clouds over the hills and the big whopper we had yesterday and moving off, it's headed out of the picture, left behind the very chilly air mass and a slow warm up for you. this will be a very slow warm up. so it is cold out there. some patchy fog for you, especially down towards the santa clara valley. the highs today, 60s, upper 60s, a few low 70s. but with the extended outlook

and your weekend, it always is in view of the mornings to be cool. and today will be a little warmer. next week, some 80s for the afternoon high. next rain will be next weekend. >> all right, steve, time now is 6:39. within the next 30 years, some parts of california, when they will no longer be good for growing wine grapes. the reason? the climate has changed. they said that 50% of california's wine grape growing areas, they could become too hot to grow high quality grapes by the year of 2039. and now the experts say that grape growing in other areas is actually improving a little bit because of global warming. one example, the sound region near seattle where they only became possible here for you in the 1970s and that is due to climate change. well, it's a possible campaign controversy for you involving the san francisco mayor's race. and the man accused of making illegal donations to his campaign. and a crime alert this

residence hall. and with details on the attack and reactions from students on campus. good morning, yes, these are the crime alerts that are now posted on campus. and including here at the tower dorm, where this assault happened. and the students, they are getting some information as to what happened to this 18-year- old victim. here is what we know, between 8:00 and 10:00 last friday night. the victim came here with friends it go -- to go to the tower's dorm to go to a party. the victim believed that the suspect overheard them. and they will try to figure it out when they approached her, saying, "i know where you are going and you can come with me." she thought he was friendly enough, so she actually got in the elevator with him. as the doors were closing, her friends apparently came back, she tried to leave that elevator, but grabbed her from behind. he went up to a floor on the tower's building where the assault happened. >> it is probably so hard to

giving $500 to the campaign. and no other san francisco business reportedly had so many of its employees contributing. the manager, by the way, denies anying wrong doing. the federal government is getting ready for a crackdown on medical marijuana clubs here in california. the u.s. attorney's office in sacramento will announce the crackdown. and they are legal here in california, but the federal government, they do not recognize the state's medical marijuana law. they are ordering them to evict the clubs located next to schools and programs. and the advocates, they plan to protest the crackdowns today in sacramento. let's get you going. >> it's going pretty well in most areas, good morning to you. we'll go to the maps here and show you traffic in the south bay that's getting slower here. getting up to highway 17. now if you are driving on the peninsula, 101 and 280, they
