people injured in an accident involving two trains. i will tell you the latest involving the investigation. and a big announcement at oakland city hall. it involves the police chief's announcement a few days ago. and early-morning gunfire. and a big fire in oakland with smoke rising into the sky. find out what operation firefighters are doing now. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning, everyone. welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. it's thursday, october 13th. tori and dave have today off. let's go straight to sal for breaking news on that fire that just broke out about 15 minutes ago. >> reporter: this is a fire near the 580/24 interchange. you can see from our camera that we have here on the emeryville area that we're pushing in to see this fire. you can see the smoke rising

all over oakland here. it's a building on the 3700 block of west street. it does look like some sort of commercial building or it could be a mixed use space. firefighters arrived about a half-hour ago. first firefighters on the scene noticed heavy black smoke and flames and we saw that, too. now there is reportedly a rescue going on of someone inside. our crew is just arriving on the scene. we'll have a live report from the scene coming up in minutes. it's 7:00, let's go back to the desk. more than a dozen people were hurt after a crash between two amtrak trains at 10:00 last night. ktvu's paul chambers has more on how this ahappenned. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. we're nine hours out. there are crews working to repair the tracks. that may take some time because

they moved lifts to move one of the locomotive the out of the way -- loy mow coatives out of the -- locomotives out of the way. at the point of impact there's a look at video here where the two train collided. amtrak officials say around 10:00, the coast starlight train was stopped at the jack london station when it was stopped by -- struck by the san joaquin train. >> the train that was moving ran a red signal, according to amtrak representative. >> reporter: in all, 154 passengers were on board both trains of which 17 were injured

and taken to area hospitals. we talked to a passenger and he said there was a big jolt before the collision. >> standing up near the front. it knocked her back clear back to me. i picked her up. i got her on her feet and her hip's hurt. >> reporter: i put a call in to find out when train service will resume here. there's a train that was allowed here. but i'm not sure and clear about that. i did put a call in. we're waiting for the call to be returned. the search is on for a man who kidnapped a baby. she's been since reunited with

her mother. a tan car pulled up, the woman took the baby out. neighbors say at 7:30 last night, neighbors reported a domestic disturbance and gunshots. they say the man who fired the shots and took the baby has ties to this house. there will soon be another person in charge of the oakland police department. mayor quan has scheduled a press conference at 1:00 this afternoon to announce a temporary chief. many believe that job will go to assistant chief howard jordan. pam cook will have more on this story coming up at 7:45. new this morning a young woman shot in oakland but now police have having a difficult time investigating the attack. kraig debro is live outside police headquarters in oakland

to explain. kraig? >> reporter: i put in a call to robbery homicide. no word on this case. it all started around 4:15. police say the woman was on 69th avenue. this is about two blocks east of international. she was shot at that time, around 4:15 in the morning. of course, the woman did not cooperate with police. they don't know who shot her. what she did next was kind of strange. police say she got in a vehicle east of oakland at 101st and macarthur. police say it was her brother who called 911. the ambulance showed up and put her on the gurney. she was shot once in the shoulder and once in the ankle. police, again, were trying to talk to the woman, but she's not cooperating. they are having a lot of difficulty investigating this case. they say when they completed

their -- completed their crime scene, a sergeant on the scene went back to the hospital and tried to speak to the woman. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thanks, kraig. well, solyndra's ceo has stepped down. brian harrison joined the freemont-based company a little over a year ago -- ago. solyndra was already struggling and withdraw plans for an ip. harrison has refused to answer questions about the company's bankruptcy. this morning, president obama is welcoming the president of south korea to the white house. the two will sign the trade agreement signed by congress last night. coming up, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with how the white house says this will help american companies but not everyone agrees. even though summer is over, we still could have spare the

air days. particulate matter, tiny pieces of pollution that float in the air, are the problem during cooler weather. that's why we're asked not to use our fireplaces on some of those days. in july of last year, the city started charging for street parking on memorial day, 4th of july, labor day and veterans day. this lend to 72% more parking citations than normal and brought in $184,000 on just those four days. right now the only days you can park for free in san francisco are thanksgiving, christmas and new year's day. 7:07. it has been a busy morning for sal. the fire -- >> you can it from the freeway.

many people on the platform deck probably see and smell the smoke. now we have these live pictures of newschopper2. firefighters have pulled someone out of the building and apparently are working on this person here on the street -- right there on the street. we saw them pull this person out of the building and earlier we had some pretty thick smoke and visible flames, and now it does look like whatever building this is, it looks like a commercial building, they've knocked the fire down. it's incredible. we have a little bit of smoke going. if you look on the right side of your screen, these are pictures we showed a little while ago of the fire when it was roaring through the roof and then we had thick, black smoke. this is a good area to avoid, west street. it's on west street and 580 and let's go out and take a look at some of the traffic pictures.

northbound traffic looks pretty good driving past the coliseum and then getting up to downtown. also the morning commute looks pretty good on the peninsula. if you are driving to san jose, northbound 280 already getting a little bit of slow traffic. driving up to cupertino, 85 is slow approaching 17. the last few days we've had pretty thick commutes in san jose. 7:08. let's go to steve. thank you much, sal. we do have partly cloudy skies a band of high clouds coming through. it still won't stop us from warming up today. temperatures in the low 70s. we'll bump them up about 4 degrees today. a lot of mid-80s. the higher clouds should lift and then by late morning/early afternoon we'll have sunny to mostly sunny skies. temperatures, still the coast looking good. so is the city, we'll go 60, 72 at noon, 82 for a high today with a lot of sunshine. any breeze tends to favor an easterly direction or northerly

direction. lows are anywhere from the 50, 60s and 70s. you get up around 2,000 feet or so. so the warmer pattern that started yesterday continues today. we'll top it out. it looks like we'll peak on friday and back off a little bit on the temperatures. maybe the fog will try to come back. another 49 now popping up towards napa. i know we had low 50s west of fairfield. upper 50s or 60s for many. there's the cool versus the mild conditions with those 50s and 60s. the system that's driving all of that moisture towards seattle and portland, right here, this low dropping down, that's the key. again, it drives down. that fires this up, also the ridge of high pressure that's the system that we'll have to keep an eye on for next week. until then, i think at worst a loss of high clouds. fair, warmer, a few high clouds, mainly towards the

helicopter in afghanistan in august was caused by a rocket- propelled grenade. 38 people died in that crash, including navy s.e.a.l.s. libya, supporters of the new government are celebrating the reported capture of one of moammar gadhafi's sons. they say gadhafi's son was captured in his home town of sit. sirt. firefighters are on the scene of a large building fire that was just brought under control. tara moriarty has just arrived and joins us live with more on the rescue. tara? >> reporter: we're here live on west street. this is between mlk and market street in oakland. they've just whisked a man off in an ambulance. it appears he was suffering

from some smoke inhalation. this is the building over here in question, behind this red vehicle you can see where they have the fire hoses hooked up to the hydrant. if they take some pictures from chopper 2, maybe you will get a better perspective of what's going on. i believe firefighters have cut a hole in the roof there trying to get some of this smoke out there. heavy smoke reported around 6:38 this morning. this appears to be a renovated garage with an entrance to the house, according to the battalion chief i just spoke to. he said it's a maze in there. they have pulled out tons of stuff, tons of clothes. but they are having to grope their way through to search for more victims. neighbors believe there may be more people trapped insighed -- trapped inside. they did an initial sweep. they are doing another one to make sure this build something clear. we still don't know what was velding -- building. the battalion chief is the guy

with the white helmet over here and he was giving us an update just a couple of minutes ago and he says they are obviously investigating and as far as they know, they just have one victim. he was suffering from smoke inhalation. there are a lot of neighbors out here, sort of standing around waiting to see what happens. this smoke's intense. we were up in the oakland hills. we could see the black smoke billowing up the sky. we were a couple of blocks away and we could really tell this horrible stench. i'm not sure what was burning in there. definitely some noxious fumes. it looks like the firefighters are beginning to leave the scene here. it looks like they have the fire under control. they will be interviewing people and making sure there are no more victims here. we're live in oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. right now, president obama is holding talks with the president of south korea at the white house.

as alison burns reports, the two leaders are celebrating a long-awaited trade deal they say will boost the economies of -- economies of both questions. >> reporter: south korea's president arrived at the white house an hour ago. it was pouring rain. but that didn't stop the welcoming of him. members of the military held umbrellas for him. president obama called the bond of the two countries unbreakable. >> today i'm proud to say the alliance between the united states and the republic of korea is stronger than it ever has been. >> reporter: last night the approval was given for trade deals with south korea, klum we yay and president obama says this will -- columbia and president obama says this will

disease. it's most dangerous for the very young seniors and people with weakened immune systems. a scandalous sky diving stunt in southern california is now the target of a federal safety investigation. it's all because of a video that was posting on the internet by a part-time sky diving inspector in kern county. the video shows the employee having wex is the employee -- sex with the employee. his victims include victims like scarlett johansson, and christina aguilera. but now officials say they have the hacker in custody.

residents of a small southern california shooting are reeling from a shooting that left eight people dead. it started yesterday afternoon when a gunman entered a salon in seal beach. we'll go live to seal beach where police are still cleaning up the -- cleaning up the scene. yesterday, the fbi arrested christopher cheney of florida. he's accused of hacking into the e-mails of more than 50 people, including scarlett johansson and christina aguilera. cheney said it all started out with curiosity but he became addicted. >> i'm not trying to escape what i did. i know what i did -- it was wrong and i have to face that and deal with it, come forward. >> the fbi says cheney did research on. celebrities and then essentially guessed the passwords to their e-mail accounts. once he gained access police say he set them to automatically forward all e- mails to his account.

up above. temperatures either kind of cool or mild. we have a lot of 50s or upper 40s or 60s and some of the higher elevations are sitting upper 60s, 70 degrees. it's a beautiful sunrise over the city. they will thin out. high pressure continues to build in from the south. that will push those out of the area later on. 49 to 60? even fairfield. 60. mild for some, cooler for others. storm track jet stream is way to the north. there is a lot out there. that little low may play into your weather until next week. until then it's a dry pattern. 70s and 80s today for almost everybody here, low to mid-80s a few pushing the up ir80s. very warm on friday -- upper 80s. we'll take that into friday.

breaking news in oakland. firefighters are mopping up hot spots from a fire. one person was taken to the hospital. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: firefighters pulled that man out of the burning building just when we were arriving on the scene 15, 20 minutes ago. joining me is the battalion chief to let me know what's going on. i know you guys came out a little after6:30. what happened? >> when we arrived, there was

dogs in the way, barking at the firefighters, and once they got inside, they used their hose and they found a male victim and he was transported to hospital. the neighbor suggested there may be more victims trapped inside. i know in your initial sweep you didn't find anyone. what's the status now? >> the status now, what they reported to me is everything is all clear. we're continuing with checking for extension right now, the fire investigators are scene are gonna check for the origin and cause. we still -- >> reporter: the stench was pretty bad. i don't know what was burning. do you have any idea?

and bruises but one passenger as a broken arm. the crash is still having a major impact on amtrak service this morning. paul chambers is gonna have a live update for us at 8:00. a vigil will be held in san jose tonight for a 59-year-old, mark munoz. he was one of three people killed in last week's quarry shooting. about 500 people packed a south bay chapel yesterday for the funeral of another victim. family and friends said he had two loves -- his family and the 49ers. his children are struggling to cope with his death. my father was a great man. he helped not only his children but anyone he could. >> his wife is battling cancer.

the suspect killed himself during a confrontation with law enforcement. protesters in san francisco are gearing up for yet another round of demonstrations today. [ chanting ] >> yesterday, police arrested nearly a dozen anti-wall street protesters outside of wells far goes headquarters. today they -- wells fargo headquarters. today they plan to rally downtown. that's where a two-day education summit will kick off. on friday rupert murdoch will speak at that summit. people rallied outside the bank of america in san rafael against what they call corporate greed. demonstrators rallied outside of bank of america branches in walnut creek and palo alto. "occupy richmond" plans to hold a rally and march at 4:00 today. the number of bay area

homeowners receiving foreclosure notices is on the decline. those notices fell 7% last month. contra costa saw the biggest drop in default notices. they fell 28% but the number of notices jumped 99% in san mateo county. 7:33. a new financial disclosure by nancy pelosi has put focus on a loophole. now, in 2010 and 2011, pelosi voluntary reported a real estate investment by her husband. but she had not reported this during the previous years. she was not required to because of how that was set up. she decided to disclose that this year because the land has become more valuable. for $50 a company is offering to sell you a square

foot of 700 acres of land in scotland. in turn, you get a certificate with the title deed for the property and that property gives the owner the right to use the title lord or lady. the company says it's just a ceremonial title but it's for a good cause. california prison officials are heading to oklahoma to help investigate a prison riot involving inmates from california. three were injured critically when the riot broke out. prison guards had to use tear gas to drive out those rioters. those prisoners were transferred there because of overcrowding and prisons in our state. let's head out to sal castanedo. how are things heading?

then we start a cool down. i think you will notice that more on sunday and we'll take that into monday. eight people are dead, one critically injured at a shooting in seal beach at a hair salon. our reporter rick low zahn know has more -- rick lozano. >> reporter: the on-scene investigation has wrapped up. now is the unsavory task of cleaning up. this is the first murder in this town in four years and now this. at the center of it all is the suspect, 42-year-old scott evans dekraai, he walked in, began spraying the place with bullets. police describe a horrific scene with bodies scattered.

six victims, die in the salon. two others died on the way to the hospital. several others had enough time to run for cover when police arrived, they saw dekraai driving down the street and they pulled him over. he surrendered peacefully. as the story unfolded, we learned about a nasty custody battle and his wife also worked at the salon. friends say michelle was a nice woman but they knew of this nasty battle and ongoing custody battle between dek. raai and -- dekraai and his wife. the investigation is continuing. it's just an unspeakable violence -- unenspeakable act of vie -- unspeakable act of violence here.

the labor department said applications were down by 1,000. that number needs to drop below 375,000 and stay there if they want to indicate a healthy economy. the number of layoffs has declined in recent weeks but there's no signs that hiring has picked up. apple users were ground to the halt yesterday. the rush for the new product led to errors. the maker of blackberry smartphones says it's working around the clock to fix the outage. many in the u.s. and canada are not receiving e-mail, messages and internet service. the problem started four years ago as after -- years -- four

santa rosa and sebastopol reported feeling the jolt. a new california law will allow same-sex couples -- couples to divorce. some judges say granting a same- sex divorce would constitute a forum recognizing same-sex marriage but in california, effective in january, couples who legally married here in 2008 but live in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage will be granted a divorce. there is a new front runner

firefighters were called to west street around 6:30 and smoke could be seen for miles. after knocking down the flames, firefighters found a man suffering from injuries. also this morning, arson investigators are looking into an early-morning fire in oakland. it started just after 3:30 at a home on 73rd avenue and spencer. that home was vacant. firefighters say that -- say that home is up for sale. the fire was quickly put out and damage to the home is minor. >> this month marks the 20th anniversary of the oakland hills firestorm. 25 people died and close to 38 homes were destroyed during the three-day fire. fire crews are using the anniversary to remind homeowners to help prevent wildfires. they want homeowners to clear dry bush around their -- dry

developing news in oakland. an investigation is underway following a large building fire that sent one man to the hospital just hours ago. tara moriarty has an update. a look at the video. some very dramatic moments this morning when the man was pulled from the burning building. we've learned from his friends that he's 26-year-old shawn megley. we want to give you a look at cell phone video shot by a neighbor just minutes after the fire broke out. you can see a firefighter trying to put -- trying to cut through a metal door. crews conducted a search to make sure no one else was in the building off west street between mlk and market. billowing, smack smoke could be seen for miles.
