a scare on campus. school children are locked down after someone spots a mountain lion. tonight animal control workers are trying to track down the animal. good evening ken wayne. frank somerville is off tonight. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. that big cat scare disrupted the school day and led to an extensive search in an area most people don't associate with mountain lions.

the sighting happened in vacaville. it's a popular rest stop for folks headed from the sierra. >> reporter: this is the area that the mountain lion was seen. one thing about vacaville is there's a lot of rest areas like these that are populated ones. there were tense moments when vacaville officers and game wardens searched this area. a man reported seeing a mountain lion next to the wild wings. after an extensive search. fish and game warden say they did not find any evidence of a mountain lions in the area and they say they don't know if the sighting was of the same mountain lion seen earlier at

an elementary school about a mile away. >> our main concern was being close to the school in case that someone was confronted or even saw a mountain lion. next thing you know we were called that it was a mile away. >> reporter: the mountain lion was seen resting by the school. they asked school officials to lock down the school and keep children inside. after searching for hours, authorities determined the areas near the restaurant and the school were safe. that allowed school officials to dismiss students at their normal time, but vacaville police maintained a heavy presence. some people said they were worried. >> we didn't know if it was legit or not. obviously better safe than sorry and keep people safe. >> especially because all our bathrooms are next to the field. the restaurants face the field. so that's what i guess made me the most nervous so that's why we had to escort all the kids

to the restroom today. >> reporter: game wardens were looking in the trees because when mountain lions get scared that's where they go, so they say. if you do see a mountain lion, call 911. mountain lions are native to california and the bay area and are becoming more visible as humans continue to encroach on their habitat. according to the department of fish and game, between 1,000 to 1,600 mountain lions live in the area. if you encounter a mountain lion don't run or crouch. try to appear larger and back away slowly. federal investigators are at the scene of a train collision that injured 17 people. it's a story we first brought you just minutes afterit happened minutes after it happened on the 10:00 news. one passenger was stopped and unloading passengers when

another train ran into it. our ken pritchett is live with what may have caused the accident. >> reporter: railroad experts i talked to say that at this stage this early on that may, may be too simple of an explanation. the trains hit nose to nose. but for the passengers on board. >> everybody got an awful joke. >> reporter: amtrak says 125 passengers were on board the train that was stopped at the station. the moving train had 14 people on board. >> one of the amtrak trains ran a red signal. >> reporter: trains can slowly pass red signals if given permission by dispatch. >> we look for route cause.

it's easy for the conductor or whoever is on, there's usually more to the story than most folks might think. >> reporter: many possible explanations exist such as a switching error that put the trains on the same track. the explanation is what was the error and who made it. amtrak and the federal railroad administration is investigating. >> something went wrong here, unfortunately. >> reporter: this was a low speed impact. the railroad experts i talked to said it was fortunate that those trains hit nose to nose. one locomotive into another. had the trains been going at a higher speed, the damage could have been extensive. the ceo of solyndra has stepped down. bryan harrison also stepped down as chairman of the board. the court will announce a chief

officer to replace him. a bay area assemblyman today outlined new legislation aimed at another pipeline explosion like last year's san bruno explosion. hill says the new law which he introduced will require pg & e and the public utilities commission to do more to protect the public. >> it is taking an explosion to motivation utilities to take action on something they already knew was a problem and should have been working to prevent and improve. >> reporter: the new law will require utilitys to pressure test all pipelines. it will maintain accurate records. within the past hour, occupy wall street protesters started a new bay area demonstration. ktvu's maureen naylor is in richmond where this time

protesters are targeting something besides big banks. maureen-- >> reporter: ken, this is the occupy richmond movement. it started about 4:00 right now and it's still growing. we watched it to go to over 50 people. people are currently rallying and holding signs. we heard about richmond's unemployment rate that's an especial concern. many protesters have a message specific to this city. they plan to target chevron saying it gets some unfair advantages. organizers preparing to leave this group in a march on what is expected to be the largest occupy wall street in the bay area. >> people are fed up with our government. >> reporter: the mayor's office says there are no plans to move the group which this man which lives in the area was surprised to see still here. >> after the first day there was a little bit of foul odor.

but they came and cleaned it up. put out the porta-potties and it cleared up. i'm not sure about the message. >> reporter: this photographer came out to capture the moment. a much smaller group maintains occupy san jose which started a week and a half ago. >> you can already see the interest that the politicians of 2012 have taken on us. we will not go to their table, they will come to our table. >> reporter: back here live, speakers continue, you see the orange cones, this group is planning to then occupy city hall. the group richmond progressive alliance is here, they're one of the organizers efforts. we talked about politicians i contacted the mayor of richmond to see what she feels about this. if they'll be in front of city hall camping, she says she strongly supports this and this

effort against what she calls corporate demonstration. maureen naylor. the protests on banks in america is not only happening on wall street. a group is rallying in front of a bank that is trying to foreclose on a home of one of their members. president obama is said to visit the bay area again later this month. the bay area officials says the president is expected to hit several cities on a western tour including las vegas and los angeles on october 24th. he will then fie to san francisco then to denver. a white house official who spoke on the condition of aninimity refused to give further details. now the dow ended down 40

points, the nasdaq ended up by 15. the uc berkeley grads met with hillary clinton. josh fattal, sean bauer and sarah shourd met with secretary of state hillary clinton today. continue to mobilize the international community, to make sure that iran is further and further isolated and faced a price for this behavior. >> reporter: the president says there's no doubt that iran planned to assassinate the

take control. that's former interim chief -- sworn in again. >> reporter: this move came two days after former chief anthony batts surprised everyone by saying he was out after just two years. >> this action which is effective immediately works toward stabilizing the department. >> reporter: batts said the reason he was leaving was because of too much responsibility and not enough control. >> he comes with an array of skills which are different than mine. >> reporter: this comes a few days before the settlement agreement. >> he is currently leading the team to get us into compliance with the federal lawsuit on civil rights. >> reporter: city council president larry reed says the city must be compliant by january 26. >> the issue that judge

henderson wants to see regarding a complete change of culture within the oakland police department i think that's going to be a very challenging one. >> reporter: although batts is no longer chief he is staying on on an advisory role until november 6. i'm john sasaki, ktvu news. breaking news to tell you about right now. a small plane has crashed this afternoon in marin county near the private san rafael airport. here's a live picture from news chopper 2. it is a single engine plane that crashed near the mcginnes park center. that is just south of china camp state park in marin county. it is near the bay and you can see authorities are at the scene going over the wreckage of that aircraft. the pilot we understand is the only person aboard the plane and we understand he has not suffered any serious injuries if any injuries at all.

he is still being assessed. that is the latest word we got from paramedics. no word on what happened with the crash but we have nice weather so that would not be a factor. and it's near the san rafael airport. not too far away from the airport. we don't know if he was taking off or landing. we will continue to cover the story. a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders says that a cocktail of drugs led to michael jackson's death. he is one of several doctors that told the judge they believe murray lacked the experience to give michael jackson propofol. >> we do not use propofol for insomnia, even in the hospital. we're learning more about

yesterday's shooting rampage at an orange county hair salon that left eight people dead and one woman seriously injured. police say 84-year-old scott decray was looking for his ex- wife when he stormed into the salon. the two were locked in a dispute over their 7-year-old son. authorities confirmed that his ex-wife was among those killed. court records show that decray was partially disabled during a thug boat accident and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result. turning to weather. rosemary orosco has what we should expect. >> we're looking at wall to wall sunshine. we soared into the 80s and the winds are light. north to northeasterly breeze really helping to heat things

up and keep any marin layer off the coast. it's hard to find any marin layer no matter how far you look out right now. san francisco still checking in right around 78. 86 for livermore, north bay. 87 in santa rosa and we do have just a light breeze for most of us. ridgeover high pressure in place and that will be the case over the next 24 hours or so. weakens a little bit as we head into the weekend. take a look at satellite radar over the next 24 hours. you can see how the ridge moves north and we continue to benefit in the way of nice warm weather. we will have tropical moisture that will pull into the area later tomorrow. notice high clouds up above. that's what that will be. outside of that we're looking at some pretty nice weather all the way into the week. although temperatures are expected to dip into the weekend as we roll through saturday and sunday. you will notice any where from five to 6 degrees cooler than

the 20th anniversary of the deadly oakland fire storm is a week away. today fire crews showed us what's changed and what's

remained the same. on october 20th 1991 high temperatures and dry brush fueled flames and high winds whipped the fire across two freeways. when it was over 25 people had died. thousands of homes were destroyed and 1,500 acres of land were charred. since then firefighters have done more training but there is still steep terrain and winding roads. >> sometimes through the best effort of man we cannot stop mother nature and what she is attempting to do to us. >> reporter: the city of oakland is planning several memorial events to mark the anniversary including a remembrance at the fire storm tile wall at the b.a.r.t. station. relief and joy flooded a small town of the sierra foothills today. this is a remarkable story. a little boy who was lost in the woods all night was sound safe and alive. >> i got a little dirty. >> a little dirty.

he says he followed the family dog shadow who was chasing a squirrel. 200 people joined in a massive search with dogs, kayaks and a highway patrol helicopter. but it was a local logger who found the boy this morning. >> he was standing right by a fir tree. >> standing by the tree. >> standing by the tree. he was crying, i started crying too. >> reporter: they bought the boy to the command center where he was reunited with his parents and three brothers. >> you fear the waters, you fear random strangers. you fear everything. >> it's great that these many people care, and they're willing to do whatever it takes. so awesome. >> after all the hours of fear, turns out daven was asleep under a tree just a mile from his house. sesame street the law firming an anti bullying cam -- sesame street is launching an

been a target of the many protests going on around the bay area and around the country. but there are other protests going on aimed at achieving a more long term impact. >> we'll get to that story shortly. but first, back to breaking news happening on the north bay. ktvu is live at the scene over a plane crash. the san rafael fire chief tells us there's only one person on board this plane, the pilot. when we last checked in on this breaking news we saw a number of emergency crews around the plane. we don't see those crews anymore but the plane is still there. it landed near a landing area, that's not too far from the san rafael airplane. it's a small private airport if you haven't heard from it before. we are waiting to hear the condition of the pilot. he was the only person on board. we know that the plane did not hit any structures on the way down but we don't know what caused the crash. our pilot is giving us a very close look at the plane but the area we're talking about is east of 101 at the lucas valley

jeopardy. >> i did put down $100,000 for a down payment. so i thought i would get a good loan. you know, it is only 900 square feet i'm living in. and now i'm in foreclosure. >> reporter: martinez working for the community group pack and attends holy trinity church. both organizations say many people are in the same situation, the group has decided to pull out their money in protest. and the holy trinity church has pulled out a large sum of money from b of a. >> what the church decided to do was to take an action. >> reporter: p.a.c.k. is pulling $1 million from wells fargo banks. >> our regulators may not be able too. our banks may not be willing about it, but we can do something. we can affect their bottom line. >> reporter: martinez is optimistic. >> i'm hoping i can reapply but

will stay up for weeks. alameda county today took steps to help low income familys to find the help they need. 200,000 people in alameda county have no health insurance. that is up 20% from 2008 due to the recession in the high number of lay offs. now the county is unveiling a new website to help people find free and low cost health care. shan says her office gets calls every day from people seeking help. >> a mother's child has a tooth ache and he or she doesn't have a regular dentist and they need to know where to go. they don't know where to start looking. do they look in the phone book? where do they look? >> they will combine all of the services into one service called allpack. go to our website and scroll down to web links. meanwhile a town in contra

staff members for california attorney general camela harris have come up with a plan that will do away with units that help law enforcement fight gangs and drugs. expect the units would focus on white collar crime. a spokeswoman for harris says the attorney general has not approved the plan, and hopes the legislature will restore the $71 million in budget cuts that led to it. cyber security experts today held a town hall meeting in the south bay to help people better protect themselves from online theft. >> we all do things every day and we've gotten so used to it and complacent that we don't think about the threats that are there. >> a san jose councilman led the first ever cyber security

summit. over the last few years hackers have gone from stealing money to stealing information. >> now their goal is to actually get in, stay quiet for as long as possible, steal or wreak havoc or whatever they're doing. and then get out without anyone knowing. >> the city is holding a shred- athon. where people can shred their documents. there's strong demand of gap clothing from online shoppers from china. the company is slashing u.s. stores by 34% to about 700 stores by the end of 2013. new sales tax figures indicate strong growth in bay area retail sales compared to last year with a slight down

tour in september. state officials say sales tax revenue dropped about 4% last month. but over the last three months it rose an average of 3%. santa clara county has the largest increase. new research suggests married couples with more money are more likely to be dissatisfied with their relationship. a study by bringham young found couples where one or more focused on getting and spending money were less likely to be satisfied in their relationship. the report also said materialism was linked to less effective communication and less marriage stability and less emotional maturity. birth control pills may have a major influence on the type of man women will choose. women on the pill when they meet their male partner were less sexually satisfied with

breaking news to tell you about from news chopper 2. members of the occupy wall street movement are now on the move in richmond. this started around 4:00 in a parking lot at the corner of 11th street and nevin avenue with a rally. and now the protesters are marching toward city hall and the richmond civic center. the mayor of richmond gail mclaughlin says she supporting the members of this rally and she hopes to speak to the attendees. one of the targets of the

protesters in this rally is chevron. there have been talks about the big banks and perceived greed by big corporations this is the first time chevron has been targeted in one of these protests. we will keep an eye on it and keep you posted. the number of default filings rose indicating a surge in foreclosures by the end of the year. new information about the cost of foreclosures to health. health and science editor john fowler reports on how the foreclosure crisis is making people sick. >> reporter: epitomized by this bank owned and vandalized house, antioch is in the cross hairs of what some call a bay

blast. what's not to love. california has beautiful weather. things are nice here in the bay area as well. >> a nice dip in the pool would have felt pretty good this afternoon everyone at this hour -- even at this hour. santa rosa widespread 80s. 80s reported at half-moon bay and upper 80s santa cruz. so we remain with the ridge of high pressure in place for your friday. that means we're going to warm back up once again. but we're watching a little bit of moisture that is expected to pull in from the south and for tomorrow afternoon, high clouds a possibility. take a look at what happens here. we have clear skies right now. by tomorrow morning 10:00, 11:00 or so already over monterey county. by 2:00 approaching i80 so it's over the pe in peninsula and it continues on through the afternoon hours. it could be hampered by translucent sunshine.

we will remain with a high pressure in place, the light winds. at the coast we're looking at 70s and around the region we're looking at mainly 80s for tomorrow. take a look at these highs expected. 86 for me novato. we're looking at 83 for san mateo, mid-80s mountain view. 89degrees in morgan hill. 89degrees for livermore. so still toasty for our inland spots but the cooling trend will begin into the weekend. take a look at these temperatures falling into the low 70s. everyone upper 60s along the coast by saturday and into sunday. then for our inland areas, if it's been a bit warm. just hold on. we're back into the upper 70s by sunday. no problems to report. farther out maybe a possibility of a sprinkle tuesday into wednesday. but really hard to say right now. >> okay, sounds good. thanks rosemary. it was a daring rescue. it looked like a high wire act

emergency crews made a daring predawn rescue in placer county. they saved the life of a man who made a dangerous and illegal parachute jump. >> it's like holding a string

over the top of the ground only your hand isn't fixed it's hovering above the ground. >> crews found themselvess in a difficult and precarious position early this morning. just after midnight a 34-year- old man attempted what's called a base jump. he launched himself from over the american river. but his parachute got caught on a tree. the jumper eventually pulled out his cell phone and he dialed 911. emergency crews had a tough time grasp him on the line. finally crews managed to lower the jumper to the ground. physically the man is fine but he may pay a price for his stunt. base jumping is only allowed with a permit for movies or other special events. so after the rescue, law enforcement arrested the jumper and took him to jail. coming up in just 90 seconds. san francisco's district attorney says he has identified
