amtrak is back on track as federal investigators are looking into the reason why two passenger trains collided. good evening. >> we broke the train crash story right here last night. now, federal railroad investigators are on the case. they are looking into why one amtrak train crashed into the other that was stopped at a station. 17 people were injured in the collision. investigators say they plan to examine the train equipment, interview the crews on both

trains and check all radio and cell phone exchanges with dispatchers. they are not ready to say what caused the crash but we found clues. we are live in oakland along the stretch of the tracks where the investigation is now focused, eric? >> reporter: ken, i have been in contact with union pacific tonight. they are in charge of the rails and switches and part of the investigation. our contact there told me a cause has not yet been established. that is bit early reports that a train rammed through those read signals back there. -- those red signals back there. trains are rolling again, 24 hours after passengers aboard two amtrak trains experienced a rare head on collision. >> i was terrified. i think i yelled louder than anyone on the train. >> reporter: katie and her two children were on the coast star light stopped at the station when they felt the impact. >> it was just a big bump like like the first jolt of a

earthquake. i thought it was an earthquake. >> reporter: soon after the crash a first responder told us what happened. >> one of the trains according to a amtrak rep ran a red signal and they were probably traveling about 15 to 25 miles an hour. >> reporter: but, today, an amtrak spokesperson would not confirm that when we asked about. a transportation source says there t is possible there was a switching error aligning the tracks incorrectly. they say a lot of things could of gone wrong. >> we look for root causes when there are accidents like that. it is ease tow blame the engineer or contkoubgtor but the bottom line is -- conductor but the bottom line is there is more to the story than most folks might stphaopbg trains are sometimes allowed to pass through red signals at slow speeds. the same things that happened when our camera was rolling here. we have been told that train last night could have been

going as slow as 12 miles perhour. we are live here in oakland. ktvu channel 2 news. the pilot of a small plane, that made a forced landing, walked away from the wreckage. it it happened at 4:00 this afternoon. the plane came down in a marsh. the plane's engine malfunctioned shortly after take off from the privately owned san rafael airport. the plane was a single engine air camper. the pilot was the only person aboard. the family of the man who died in the waters off of alameda a crime beach as police and firefighters stood by, filed legal claims against the city and county. according to the claim the emergency workers failed in their duty to help raymond zach that day. quote they breached the duty through numerous actions and inactions that violated their procedures and protocalls. negligence were the proximate

cause of the death. the 52-year-old waded in chest high waters off of crown beach back on memorial day. witnesses said he stood there until he drowned. the complaints filed today seek unspecified damages. san francisco police say they arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection to the shooting last month that wounded a 5- year-old girl. the shooting happened on september 20th at the intersection of 3rd and paradio in the bay view district. the girl was walking home with her sifter and father when she was struck by a stray bullet. the teenager was arrested yesterday. his name is not being released because he is a juvenile. new at 10:00. lines are forming tonight outside of apple stores as people await friday's release of the new iphone 4s. we are in front of one of the apple stores. >> reporter: ken, the apple allure. 10 hours before the iphone goes on sale, lines of people waiting to camp out overnight to get the first in line to buy

it is day two of apple's new operating system, ios5 and things are not going smoothly. customers went to apple stores seeking help in downloading the new operating system. apple said yesterday's problem with overloaded servers seemed to have been resolved. one analyst told us he is having problems with the i- message, the i-cloud and the apple id. blackberry smart phones are back in action around the world after a 3-day outage. blackberry's maker says a link in a network failed on monday and a back up also failed cutting off service to most users. the problem spread to the u.s. yesterday. repairs were completed today and the company says they are looking for a way to soothe dissatisfied customers. >> a day over jp morgan reports a decline. the dow ends the winning streak falling 40 points. the nasdaq stayed in the black, rising 15 points. the zinga plans to list the

lion after 1:00 in a field next to the buffalo wild wings restaurant on monte vista avenue. after an extensive search, fish and game wardens say they did not find evidence of a mountain lion in the area and do not know if the sighting was the same mountain lion seen earlier near an elementary school about a mile away. >> our initial plan was to be nearby the school in the event somebody getting out of school was confronted or saw even a mountain lion and next thing you know we get a call that is a mile away. >> reporter: this photo was taken by a resident from a cell phone. after the photo was turned over to the police they asked the school officials to lockdown the school and keep the children inside. after searching for hours the authorities determined the areas near the restaurant and the school were safe. that allowed school officials to dismiss students at their normal time. vacaville police remained with a heavy presence. some parents say they were
