area. it's 4:30. back to the desk. topping the news this morning, it is black friday for apple fans. the iphone 4s goes on sale in 3.5 hours. long lines already forming around the world. a familiar figure sits at the front of the line. >> reporter: well, we're talking about steve, one of the co-founders of apple. he left the company nearly two decades ago, but he is still a big fan. we talked to him and he said he wanted to be here to be part of the fanfare of the launch of this new product. and he was the first person in line, but the line goes way back. it goes half way down the block there. is the front of the am store. and you can see there are all kinds of people with chairs and sleeping bags, a lot of people are still sleeping and some people are using their ipads and iphones to pass the time out here.

now the iphone 4s is going to be, people will be able to purchase it starting at 8:00 this morning. if you look inside, you can see there are about a dozen apple employees. they have been here since 3:00 this morning at the at least. possibly overnight, shot sure about that. but there's a lot of people getting ready for a lot of sales to happen later this morning. now an estimated 4 million people around the world have preordered an iphone 4s. at&t said it had taken more than 300,000 pre-orders in just the first 12 hours that it was available. this is a big fan for apple -- this is a big deal for apple fans. you were here around what time? >> around 1:00. >> and you're from dubai, and you timed your visit -- >> exactly. part of it was to come down and be part of this. because i haven't been part of apple for five, six years since

i went back to dubai. so it's exciting for me. >> reporter: what was the mood overnight? people friendly? >> oh, very, very friendly. so much fun. we shared so many stories. so many tech stuff. we had such a great time. and they're all friendly. >> reporter: were a lot of people talking about steve jobs passing away? >> yeah, sometimes we do bring it up, but most of the time, fun stories with steve. that was the best part. >> reporter: and what was your favorite story, you had a chance to talk with him? >> yeah, we spent like hours and hours talking. it was amazing. he told us so many stories of back in the days with steve jobs and how he started or specific stuff. interesting. yeah. >> reporter: thank you so much. well, that of course is part of the draw of coming here, camping out here overnight, just having the experience. and as you heard, with other people who enjoy apple and love the apple iphone as well. in about half an hour, we're going to talk with the apple

co. founder about 30 minutes from now. ktvu channel 2 news. union workers will picket outside the san francisco apple store today. the protest is part of a nationwide campaign against verizon. the wireless company and its 45,000 employees are at odds over health care coverage and benefits. if you are insured through blue shield of california, you may see extra money coming your way. coming up, why the company is issuing millions of dollars worth of refunds. also this morn, there's an important warning for students on the san jose state university campus. police are telling women to travel in pairs after a sexual battery wednesday night. a young woman says she was walking on campus when two young men rode up on bikes and groped her. the men are described as latino males in their late teens or early 20s. one was wearing a black shirt with a white circumstance and will the other wore a purple

shirt and black pants. concord firefighters rescued two elderly people from their burning home overnight. and crews are still on the scene. so is ktvu with more on the story. >> reporter: well, this is really a great rescue for firefighters. when we arrived, they were excited that this was a fire basically that went off without a hitch. they were able to rescue the two women from inside. one they helped walk out and the other they carried out. on the house, on the top portion, there's a hole you can see around the chimney. that's where they were poking holes through to let the smoke out. and then on the front lawn, you can see the debris there. we are here and firefighters say that the flames broke out around 1:30 this morning in the attic. and the smoke was heavy when they arrived. they were able however to knock out the fire within ten to 15 minutes. >> when our first arriving crew showed up, concord pd was

onscene and they could not make entry into the structure due to the high volume of smoke. the first arriving crew then entered the building and they were able to locate two victims. >> reporter: again, those were two women inside. they were many the back bedroom of the house. and firefighters brought them out through the front door where they were then take on the the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. no word yet on what exactly caused this fire. we're going to try to show you video that firefighters themselves shot while fighting the fire. well, three people were displaced in another fire overnight. that started at about 11:30 at an apartment complex on visitation valley. the fire may have been sparked by a pot that was left on the stove. that home did not have a smoke detecter. a neighbor who noticed the smoke was the one to call the fire department. no one was injured. pg and e is planning to

replace 1200 miles of pipes that deliver gas into homes and businesses. these particular pipes are blamed for explosions at this house in 2008 and the fire at a condo a few weeks ago. the vice president tells the mercury news that the company will ask the consumer product safety commission for a rate increase to cover the cost which could run into the billions. the two-inch pipes were made in 1973. they do have a history of cracking. >> it has taken an explosion to motivate utilities and regulators to take action on something they already knew was a problem and should have been working to prevent and improve. >> bay area assembly menagerie hill announced plans to -- assembly man jerry hill

announced plans to propose a new bill. according to the highway patrol, a truck carrying four workers lost control on highway 70. now after the truck hit the water, the two workers in the backseat were able to get out, but the driver in the front seat passenger were trapped inside and died at the scene. the accident is being investigated. a san jose man faces charges of selling guns out of a hot dog stand. the 58-year-old operates the stand. the mercury news reports an undercover police officer started buying weapons from there in april. a federal indictment claims he then led authorities to his partner, a 23-year-old. he allegedly sold them rifle, ammunition and meth from a street corner. police have arrested a man accused of assaulting a denny's waitress and manager.

part of the assault was caught on surveillance video. it happened in august at the restaurant not far from the expressway. police say a group of intoxicated people were making noise at the restaurant so the waitress asked them to quiet down. police say that's when a 33- year-old threw silverware at the waitress, cutting her face. police say he then punched her, knocking her unconscious. officers say he left the restaurant, and then left and punched the manager in the mouth. he was arrested last week. he is set to be arraigned on tuesday. a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a 5-year- old girl in san francisco's bay view district last month. police say the girl was walking home with her father when she was hit by a stray bull fret a shootout. investigators were able to identify one of the suspects through tips and video. he was arrested on wednesday. police are still looking for the second suspect involved in

that shootout. time now 4:39. news has uncovered new information about this week's amtrak train accident in oakland. 17 people were hurt when one train crashed into another wednesday night. now early reports indicated that one of the trains ran a red light signal, but one source tells us it's also possible that there was a switching error that could have caused the trouble on the tracks. everyone agrees, it's early in the investigation. >> we look for root causes whenever there's accidents like that. it's easy to blame the engineer or conductor or whoever is involved, but there's usually more to the story than most folks might think. >> investigators plan to examine the train equipment and interview the crews and check the emergency communication tied to the crash. most passengers suffered bumps and bruises. well the pilot of a small plane walked away uninjured after he was forced to make a

crash landing. the plane landed in a make infested marsh yesterday afternoon. rescuers say it appears the engine malfunctioned shortly after taking off from the airport nearby. the pilot, a man from nevada was the only person onboard. a new report by a government watchdog says errors made by air traffic controllers have increased dramatically. the government accountability office shows mistakes involving flights near airports more than doubled over the last three years. many of these errors occur when had controllers directed planes to fly too close to teach other. a federal aviation statement says it's due to better error reporting. this morning in new york, a scheduled clean-up that would have forced wall street protesters to leave a private park has been postponed. we're going to take you there

live this morning. take a look at the amount of people there right now. overnight, they did bring out their own mops and brooms. they claim that the planned work was just an effort to shut down the movement and they vow to stay put. but the owner says conditions have worsened since the protesters took over the park nearly a month ago. >> it's time to take what is ours back. >> the occupy movement spread to richmond. people staged a rally yesterday afternoon. the group says it plans to camp outside of city hall for several days. in san francisco this morn, the occupy movement will rally again outside an education conference where the media mogul will give a keynote speech. the national summit on education reform is being held there. teachers say they were excluded and strongly disagree with reforms that leaders are proposing. drivers in san francisco

money when profits exceeded 2%. this month, blue shield is returning $167 million in the form of discounts on insurance bills. in december, blue shield says it will refund $283 million, or as much as $700 for a family of four. the three-week hunger strike involving thousands of inmates at california prisons is now over. strike leaders agreed to resume eating after negotiates yesterday. the prisoners say they went on the strike to protest conditions in solitary confinement. they agreed to end the hunger strike after prison officials said they would review the cases of all prisoners currently in solitary confinement. a city audit shows the homeless population in san francisco remains high despite programs and resources. according to the audit, the homeless population has stayed relatively steady since 2000. now the city has expanded

services and increased spending to nearly $40 million a year to help the homeless. city officials and homeless advocates say programs work, but high unemployment and cuts to federal aid are keeping the rates high. well, this is the first full day on the job for oakland's new interim police chief. but he won't need any on-the- job training. yesterday the assistant chief took the oath of office as expected to formally take charge. he is a 23-year department veteran. he is replacing the chief who announced his decision to step down three days ago. he says he's leaving the department in good hands. >> he has been my right hand. he does an outstanding job. we have planned everything together. and he's going to do a great job. >> he previously led the department in 2009. city leaders say he could eventually become chief on a

permanent basis, but that decision won't be made for several months. one person is in the hospital this morning following an apartment fire in oakland. firefighters responded to a two- story apartment building shortly before 9:30 last night. witnesses say crews rescued a young man who is being treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation. no one else was hurt. the fire apparently started in the kitchen of an upstairs unit and a second unit is also damaged. a small orange county town is beginning the healing process after eight people were killed in a shooting rampage at a beauty salon. more than 1500 people held a candle light vigil last night. it was inside the salon where police say a 41-year-old opened fire wednesday afternoon, killing eight people.

among the victims was his ex- wife. now police say two were in a bitter custody battle over their 8-year-old son. >> we are a close-knit community that have never experienced such a devastating event. this is literally touched every person in our town. >> he was arrested about a half mile from the salon. police say he was armed and wearing a bullet-proof vest. he was taken into custody without incident. san francisco bay's gap plans to close 200 stores in the u.s. over the next two years. it will allow the company to focus on international expansion after years of weak sales. the retailer operates almost 900 stores in the united states under the gap, banana republic and old navy chains and it's not saying yet which stores it will close. well, the cal bears may have lost last nigh, but it was a big win for san francisco.

tens of thousands of people packed the park for the game. the bears are playing home games in san francisco while memorial stadium undergoes renovations. businesses nearby say they enjoy the boost in traffic, especially since the giants aren't in the play-offs this year. fans say, they like the location too. >> it was just, what a two minute cab ride to the game here. they should do this every year. every year up here. >> unfortunately for cal and their fans, the bears lost 30- 9. they have fallen to 3-3 overall. and 0-3 in the pac 12. raider fans are hosting the nfl's longest tailgate beginning tonight in memory of al davis. davis died last saturday at the age of 82. the tailgate for charity starts at 7:00 tonight. that's at the corner of 66th avenue and coliseum way. fans will stay from tonight until the game on sunday

police are warning people to watch out for mountain lions including one near a school. the school was locked down yesterday after police were given a cellphone photo of a mountain lion near the school. crews did not find the lion. later in the afternoon, another sighting was reported near the buffalo wild wings restaurant. >> our initial plan was to be nearby the school in the event

that somebody getting out of school was confronted or even saw a mountain lion. and next thing, we get a call that's a mile away. >> after searching for hours, thoracics determined the areas nearby the school and restaurant are safe. students were dismissed at their normal time. this morning, homeland security tactical response teams are scheduled to arrival in dublin. the county sheriff's department says 32 separate drills are planned to cover things like hostage rescues. teams from jordan and israel will work along side bay area agencies. if you have holder unpaid traffic tickets, you could be eligible for a big discount. the state is offering a 50% reduction in fines if you pay up during the first six months of next year. now the deal applies to fines due before the start of 20009.
