oakland residents worried about crime in the city can take their concerns to the mayor and the new police chief. we'll tell you about the event they're hosting an hour from now. >> from wall street to the suburbs, the city is getting ready for protestors to hit the streets again this weekend. >> and the music festival taking place this weekend that almost didn't happen, and more, now on ktvu mornings on 2. and good morning. welcome to ktvu mornings on 2. it's saturday, october 15th.

meteorologist rosemary joins us now. >> we have another nice day in store. not at warm as the last couple days, and we're going to have high clouds once again some if it felt a little muggy yesterday afternoon, may get that way into the afternoon once we move through the second half of your saturday. we're cloud youy this morning with fog on the coastline. we're going to be mild as you get outside this morning. and then for the afternoon, anywhere from five to 10 degrees of cooling. we'll look at what you can expect for your area coming up. in one hour, oakland's mayor and the city's top law enforcement officials will be meeting to talk about how to make the city safer. and as ali rasmus reports live, new police chief howard jordan will be in attendance today. what can we expect? >> reporter: according to the mayor's office, a lot of discussion among all kinds of different people in the community, including community leaders, and you can see it some of these fliers that they've handed out earlier in the last couple weeks, getting

the word out about this neighborhood safety summit. the planning board started weeks ago and as you can see from the lists here, back then chief the police was anthony batts. but he resigned earlier this week and now it's interim police chief howard jordan who will be stepping in in this new role and being at this neighborhood safety summit that starts just about an hour from now. now, jordan was sworn in as interim chief a couple days ago. this will be his first community meeting in the new role. the mayor and other oakland school district and county leaders will be at the neighborhood safety summit. organizers say the goal of this meet something to get people in the community together to talk about how to deal with crime in oakland. the mayor's offers says there will be strategy sessions, dialogues and workshops on at least 15 different topics, including gang awareness, truancy, police relationships, volunteering and youth mentoring, with talks and discussions about gun violence in the city. on the heels of the shake-up this week with oakland police leadership and the resignation

of anthony batts and with shootings and homicides on the rise, some city councilmembers say it's time for action and not just talk. >> all this talk about policy, policies will be just pieces of paper if we don't have the police in the streets to enforce them. >> the neighborhood safety summit happens here at laney college in the gymnasium. it starts an hour from now at 8:00 and it's open to the public. according to the flier, they will be giving people free breakfast and lunch. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the search for a new oakland police chief has raised other concerns about the top of city government the the mayor wasted little time to name the immaterial rim chief to the same position. some on the city council are unhappy with how kwon and batts work together. >> we need to get a unified vision and support our police chief. that's something that was not happening. >> some councilmembers say they

want kwon for more active in lower the crime rate. the mayor's office says kwon has done more for public safety than any other mayor. anti-wall street protestors will be out today in downtown san rafael and santa rosa. people with occupy san rafael plan to picket outside the bank of america a at 4th street starting at noon. wednesday nearly 200 pro testers went there. occupy oakland is getting star power today. the group says actor danny glover will lead a rally. the march begins at laney college at 1:00 and ends at city hall. yesterday occupy oakland protestors staged a peaceful march through downtown. they're from all walks of life and each is demanding change. >> i think we want health care for all, against the war, and i want to bring an end to u.s.

involvement overseas. put that money back into the people. >> i'd like to have a constitutional amendment to bancorp pratt money and political -- >> police were on hand to direct traffic and block some streets. the protests starting it all still going on this weekend. stay with us. ahead at 7:15, the clash demonstrators in new york had with police. in washington, d.c. the final preparations are underway for tomorrow's dedication of the martin luther king, jr. memorial. the 31st sculpture is the first monument on the mall honoring a black leader. president obama will speak at tomorrow's dedication. last night with no cameras rolling he made a surprise visit to the memorial with the first lady and their two daughters. visitors have been flocking there since it opened in august. >> it made my heart beat really strong. i have a lot of love for that. the structure is absolutely beautiful. and it does look like him. >> i just hope the young people

here realize what a great sacrifice this was. this was -- this is hallow ground here today. >> the dedication was originally scheduled for late august. but it was postponed because of hurricane irene. a bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in oakland. witnesses say the driver went through the intersection at west macarthur and webster, hit the cyclist and drove away after 9:00 last night. the victim suffered serious injuries. witnesses told the driver a woman to 30th and west streets. police arrived and arrested her. pg&e says the power is back on this morning throughout monterey county. an overhead equipment failure knocked out that power to 9700 customers last night. affected areas included cannery row and pacific grove. pg&e says the crews took about three hours to fix the problem. good morning! giving you a live look there. we've got the marine layer back

" >> the president recorded that message yesterday in the detroit area. he toured a general motors plant with the south korean president. this morning me criticized republicans for killing his $450 billion jobs bill, but he is vowing to push congress to pass various parts of that legislation. new campaign finance records show that a former energy department advisor had pushed for the solyndra federal loan is a big fund-raiser for the president. steve spinner now serves as an energy expert for american progress. he raised more than half a million dollars for president obama's re-election campaign. recently released e-mails indicate he was involved in the half billion dollar solyndra loan, despite pledging to recuse himself because his wife's law firm represented the fremont company. the loan is coming under intense scrutiny from congress. two officials told lawmakers yesterday they had never before

seen a restructuring plan in which private investors would be paid back ahead of taxpayers if solyndra went bankrupt. there's now three congressional hearings since the company foiled for bankruptcy last month. pg&e is working fast to replace old gas pipelines before there's another failure or explosion. crews hope to replace more than 1,000 miles of plastic pipelines in the next three years. these lines have been linked to problems including explosion earlier this year in cupertino. pg&e is still conducting high pressure testing on its main transition lines. >> it's part of ouro verde improvements to management program, we're testing and inspecting our lines much more frequently. >> the cupertino blast area is one of the first places that will receive the new pipelines. pg&e is also rerouting a line in south san francisco to prevent it from failing during an earthquake. in new york city, anti-wall street protestors continue to occupy a park.

as you can see, demonstrators clashed with police during a march to wall street's landmark bowl yesterday. more than a dozen people were arrested for blocking traffic, throwing bottles and overturning trash cans. earlier protestors claimed victory after the park owners scrapped plans to power wash the park. >> my understanding is that brookfield got lots of calls from many elected officials threatening them and saying if you don't stop this, we'll make your life more difficult. >> the fact that i wish they would have done it, because i -- the smell and everything is terrible. >> protestors fear the scheduled cleaning was actually an attempt to shut down that movement. >> we're not fighting! we're not resisting! >> a lot of pushing, yelling and pepper spray at an occupy protest in san diego yesterday. police used pepper spray to

break up an encampment protestors took over a week ago. police arrested several people after they refused to leave. >> they were holding me up by my neck. >> in the end all but one tent was removed. the rest of the protestors have moved tie park near the san diego zoo. the occupy wall street movement is spreading around the world, inspiring protests in australia. >> like solidarity and support for wall street and also i think it's also like we're anti- anything, it's more of an idea that we're going to be pro- things. >> this is melbourne this morning. hundreds of people are camped out in the heart of that city. the cost of living there is high and others say politicians need to be held more accountable. similar protests are taking place in new see distuned, tokyo and japan. ford appears to be close to averting a strike as employees continue to vote on a new

contract. as more votes are coming in, it appears a majority of ford workers are voting in favor of the new contract. that's a change from yesterday when it looked like the contract could be voted down. both ford and united auto workers expect the contract to be improved. some say it makes too many concessions but ford organizations the new contract will allow it to hire more workers and make factory upgrades. in our economy watch in morning, new numbers show california home prices are now down for the 12th consecutive month. tracking says the medium home price in the state is now $249,000 that's down from $265 and,000 a year ago. and it's just over half of what it was in 2007. more than 480,000 dollars. short sales and foreclosures now make up half of all transactions. online video streaming website could be getting ready for an ipo. they announced thursday it was no longer for sale and would map out a future for its online

people in virginia are cleaning up after a series of tornadoes touched down there. the national weather service confirms not one but seven tornadoes hit yesterday. the twisters spread across several counties, including fairfax and prince william. there are no reports of injuries, but one of tornadoes ripped the roof from a historic home that dates back to the 18th century. i went to the cal soccer game last night and just couldn't believe how nice it was! >> yes. we've had an and enjoyed some nice, warm, summer-like evenings. those will if away. look at that beautiful sunrise, though. it lifted about 10 minutes ago and will set right around 6:30. so the nights are growing longer and the days shortening. your forecast for today, getting outside early this morning, have someplace to be? it's a mild one, calm one. fartherly for mostly cloudy and mix of low clouds along the coastline and the bay. and we're get high clouds still streaming in.

inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. if you have any information about his whereabouts, contact the san francisco police department. there's now a $100,000 reward offered for the safe return of a missing missouri baby. lisa irwin has been missing 12 days. the now 11-month-old girl was lasts seen asleep in manager crib on october 3rd. in the early morning hours the next day her father called police to say he came home from work and discovered his daughter was missing. for the lasts two days, police have been vowing a wooded area near the home. police say they have no suspects or solid leads in the disappearance. fans of the silver and black are seeing red. some fans already tailgating for tomorrow's game but they're angry "sports illustrated" chose to put nascar driver jimmie johnson on the latest cover rather than late owner al davis. the magazine did dedicate several pages but fans say

all those districts taken off the street. >> authorities say their effort broke up drug rings and gun running. prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for the man police say went on a deadly shooting at a southern california salon. scott dekraai made his first court appearance yesterday. prosecutors say he entered the salon where his ex-wife worked on wednesday, wearing body armor and began shooting. his ex-wife was killed along with seven other people. >> he was willing to ends any life in his path, and he did. clearly this two-minute murder spree could not have been about loving his son. >> he is hold butt bail. his a win arement postponed until november 29th. a judge ordered a a medical review. a former u-haul employee in san francisco saying he was firing for complaining about asbestos at the workplace. he worked at the baby facility

for 8 months and in that time earned a promotion to assistant manager. he said a janitor found asbestos and urged management to do something. the janitor was let go. when he tried to push the issue, he got the following response from his boss. >> it was here and had been for years and years, and they had no intention of doing anything. >> he was fired soon after and says he worries about his former coworkers and customers being exposed. we were told no managers were on-site to respond. an oregon woman is demanding an apology after getting kicked off the bus because her infant was crying. surveillance video shows the bus driver walking to the back of the vehicle and her two-year- old daughter. the driver said she couldn't go with all that crying, so had to take the child and get off the bus. >> i did not have a choice because i don't know what to do.

and at 9 the presentations begin. the set-up here also providing food and coffee for some of the people. the registration area spans the bidding the the courtyard because they're expecting as many as 800 to a thousand people. residents and people in the community of oakland to attend this neighborhood safety summit. what will happen at the summit? well, at this meeting the plan is to have the 800 people here directly from mayor jean quan, then break up to groups on topics. here's some of the things they'll be talking about. oakland's new police chief howard jobber jordan will be here. this will be the community's first chance to hear from him since being sworn in a couple days ago. the registration starts at 8:00

this morning. again, organizers expecting 800 to a thousand people to attend but said there's still room for more people who want state park and open to the public and anyone is invited to attend. two men arrested on charges of stealing $60,000 worth of almonds. authorities found 38-year-old manuel guitterez with two bins full of almonds. even though they took the nuts, they let him go because they didn't know where the bins came from. but authorities tracking him caught him in the act. >> takes him out into almond orchard and places those into a plastic bag, and for sales to the l.a. produce markets. >> investigators say guitterez worked with the night supervisor at the houston nut company to steal 24,000 pounds

suing burger king saying he bit no a needle in his hamburger. he says the needle pierced his tongue and made him bleed. he was then hospitalized and put on bed rest after another needle was found lodged in his small intestine. he suffered severe physical injuries and lost wages because of negligence. two men have been arrested on charges of stealing $60,000 worth of almonds. kern county detectives received a tip this last month and found a man with two bins full of almonds. they let him go because they didn't toe where the almond came from. but this week authorities caught him in the act. >> take him out into almond orchard it placed those into a plastic bag and for sale to the l.a. produce markets. >> investigators say guitterez worked with the night supervisor at the houston nut company to steal those almonds.
