16. >> good morning. let's get our first check of your sunday morning forecast. good morning. >> it's going to be another nice day. we're going to be slightly cooler than yesterday, but first waking up with a few scattered showers. they are already tapering off. take a look at the radar. i'm going to stop it. you can see just a few cells still lingering right in between, it looks like hayward, maybe working its way towards livermore in the next 15 minutes or so, or it could dissipate and dry out. we are looking at a nice afternoon. your sunday, even a sneak peek into your work week ahead coming up. overnight note, when police launched a homicide investigation after a shooting near a liquor store. live from oakland we have details on a shooting that comes really just hours after a safety summit meant to make the streets a little safer.

>> reporter: police are investigating their 85th homicide of the year. this happened just before midnight last night in front of a liquor store on the 1300 block of mcarthur avenue in oakland. police aren't sure what the circumstances were, whether it was a robbery or some other type of motive, but we know one person was killed. a second person transported to the hospital. the shooting comes just a few hours after oakland's new police chief howard jordan and the mayor presented their plan to combat violent crime in the city. they hosted a safety summit yesterday morning that went throughout the afternoon. more than 500 people showed up. the mayor's plan is to focus police and community resources in 100 blocks of the city that are the most problematic. the mayor says 90% of the shootings and violent crime happened within that 100 block area. they provided a map of it. however the borders are not clearly defined. they said only that the 100 block area is made up of areas

mostly in east and west oakland. the police chief says extra officers will be patrolling those 100 blocks. >> it's not just the police. they're going to see other city workers, city leadership, the school district, all the other efforts we mentioned are going to be in that area. >> the mayor says as part of that plan, city workers will also be focusing on things like illegal dumping, neighborhood cleanup. but here at police headquarters, investigators are looking into the 85th homicide of the year here in oakland. last year there were 95 homicides the entire year. in overnight news out of san francisco, investigators are searching for a person who shot at chp officers during a chase that ended with a crash. it happened not far from the transamerica building. police got a call around 11:30 that someone had fired a shot at a chp car during a chase.

the driver crashed into a building and managed to run off. it's not clear what led up to the chase. also in san francisco, a pedestrian is in critical condition this morning after being hit in a crosswalk overnight. it happened around 10:00 last night on fulton street and 20th avenue. police say the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. officers don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved. a san jose cemetery remains a crime scene this morning. multiple sources say steve thompson was shot and killed while attending the funeral of the president of the san jose chapter of the hells angels. a witness says a fight preceded yesterday's shooting. thompson spoke just last month about his fallen friend. he was one of about 4,000 people attending the funeral. >> it's ridiculous, especially in a memorial park. what were they thinking? auto officers who initially arrived at the scene moments

after this incident occurred report now that they believe they suspect that the scene had been tampered with. >> police will not say specifically how that scene was tampered with. the mercury news reports thompson argued with and punched a fellow hells angels member who retaliated by shooting and killing him. here are more details. he was arrested back in 1997 for the beating death of another man at a san jose strip club. a jury acquitted him and the club's owner. he was a very close friend of jeffrey pettigrew who was gunned down last month at a nevada casino. occupy protesters across the bay area say they will not back down. a group of demonstrators marched through downtown oakland yesterday. they pushed for jobs, not cuts, to social programs.

their rally ended at the plaza where they got support from actor danny glover. >> i don't bring anything other than what everybody else brings to it. myself. and i believe in the possibility of human transformation. i bring everything that i bring as a citizen. >> the oakland mayor spoke at the jobs rally. the rally is to promote a series of social and political issues. and this was the scene in san francisco yesterday from news chopper 2. hundreds of people took to the streets as part of the occupy san francisco protests. the march was peaceful. police say no one was arrested. the group plans a candlelight vigil this evening to promote peace and to pay respects to what it calls the death of the american dream. autopsy wall street protesters last night flooded new york's times square.

discuss business. samsung and apple are locked in a bitter court dispute over patents. today's private service is expected to take place on the stanford university campus. several top tech leaders are expected to attend. governor jerry brown is reportedly on the guest list. the "wall street journal" reports the nonprofit organization set up by jobs wife is helping organize the event. another service for apple employees is set to take place this wednesday. today's service cops as customers continue to line up to buy apple's newest iphone version. wireless carriers are reportedly seeing record sales. at&t said it set records for new iphone sales and activations of the sprint says this last friday is now the best retail day recorded in the history of the company. analysts predict a record four million iphones may be sold this weekend alone. smart phones are not the only expensive items that

people are buying in this economy. the government says retail sales were up 1.1% in september. the biggest gain in seven months. retail experts say many people are purchasing little luxuries instead of investing in big items like a house. some of those items include cars, premium cable services, wines, purses, jewelry and high end cosmetics. >> you got a lot of people that have been sit -- sitting on the sidelines for such a long time, quite frankly i think they just want to spoil themselves or something like that. >> experts predict that luxury car sales fueled by low interest rates and easier financing will grow by 70% in the next eight years. overseas in greece, trash collectors are still on strike this morning. the trash collectors walked away from their jobs to protest tax hikes, wage cuts and other measures. more greek workers are expected to walk away from their jobs

this wednesday and thursday for a two-day long general strike. later today in france, we could find out who embattled president sarkozy might face in a presidential election next year. the country's socialist party is holding a runoff race today to choose its nominee. sarkozy is in the conservative party. although he's not officially announced his re-election campaign for 2012, he's widely expected to run again. french voters elected sarkozy president in 2007. what started as a peaceful protest against wall street has grown into an international crew said. however violence marred demonstration yesterday. in rome, masked protesters set fire to cars and vandalized banks and supermarkets. the demonstrators called themselves the black walk. police fired tear gas hoping to squash the uprising. >> tensions boiled over in

in our economy watch, the finance chiefs of the world's richest countries have gathered in paris for the g-20 meeting. the group is hinting it may give the international monetary fund additional resources to prevent escalating debt throughout europe. u.s. treasure secretary timothy geithner says washington is in the midst of economic reforms. >> although most of the attention in the world is now focused on europe, we are working hard in the united states to repair the damage caused by our crisis to reform our financial system and to strengthen the fundamentals for future economic growth. >> funding for the imf is already on the docket for the next g-20 member that's scheduled for early november in france. the world is expected to reach a population milestone at the end of this month. according to the u.n., the global population will hit 7 billion. the u.n. estimates that the

the waters are starting to recede in thailand. the government says elaborate barriers are holding steady at the capital city. runoff water is now flowing southward to the gulf of thailand. the floods have already killed nearly 300 people and more than 200 major highways and roads have been shut down. damage is estimated at $3 billion. a group of american marines is on the ground in bangkok. they will survey the damage and then decide how the united states can best assist in those relief efforts. on the way to work this morning, a stray shower, but it looks like that is moving out

a very mild autumn afternoon is what we're looking at for today, monday we warm just a little bit. temperatures fall once again on tuesday, wednesday, thursday. fair skies and temperatures rebounding just a little while. if you've been with us the last few days, we've been watching this cut-off low finally going to scoot over california. that's what cools us down tuesday, wednesday. but we're not looking at rain with that. maybe just a little drizzle. the time is now 7:26. hundreds of adrenaline junkies spent the weekend taking a dangerous leap off a span in west virginia. about 400 people jumped more than 800 feet off the bridge as part of the new river gorge bridge festival. the only time it's legal to base jump off the bridge is during this annual event. the jump only lasts a few seconds but participants say it's worth it. >> i think it's different for a lot of people. for me it's that moment that you leave the bridge, it's pure

time now is 7:30. >> that shooting happened around midnight. just hours after a safety summit that brought together oakland leaders, police and the community. live outside headquarters with what we know about this latest violence and what city leaders are promising. >> reporter: we know at least one person was killed in the shooting. there are reports that a second person who was shot and taken to the hospital has also died. however police have not been able to confirm that for us yet. but in latest violence happened just before midnight on the 1300 block of mcarthur next to a liquor store and an apartment complex. police aren't sure what the circumstances were that led up to the shooting, what the motive was, whether it was a robbery or something else. police have not arrested anyone at the scene. they're still looking for a suspect. >> we received information regarding where the suspects may be located. that turned out with negative

other things like that, foreclosed homes, could be a different way to deal with active foreclosed homes in those areas is also a problem for us. also relates to crime. >> reporter: and this homicide that happened last night is the 85th homicide of the year here in oakland. there were 95 homicides in all of last year. live in oakland. santa rosa police are searching for the driver of a car that hit a pedestrian and took off. it happened around 10:30 last night. police say they got a call of an intoxicated man in the area. when officers arrived they found a man lying in the road. a witness told police they saw the car hit the man and drive off. the man's name has not been released. occupy sacramento tweeted overnight that 19 people were arrested in a demonstration at state capitol, including cindy sheehan, the 54-year-old anti- war protesters was one of the headline speakers at yesterday's event.

she said she was willing to get arrested if authorities would not allow occupy protesters to continue staying overnight near the capitol grounds. sheehan camped outside the bush family ranch in crawford, texas, after her son died in iraq in 2004. in denver, cameras caught a police officer using a baton to push back an occupy protester. authorities here arrested 24 people at the event. demonstrators say they were angry after the city ordered police to clear out an encampment. colorado's governor said he was monitoring the situation. speaker after speaker talked about the many achievements of martin luther king, jr. i want to show you now a live picture from washington. tens of thousands of people are taking part in a dedication ceremony for the new king memorial. this morning's program includes aretha franklin. and in the next hour, president obama is set to speak.

coming up at 7:45, we will go to d.c. for a live report on the new 120 million-dollar memorial for the late civil rights leader. a weekend outing on the waters in southern california ended in disaster. three women riding on a personal water craft died when they crashed into a motor boat. happened on a reservoir east of downtown los angeles. four people aboard the boat had serious to minor injuries. homicide detectives and los angeles county lifeguards are investigating the crash to determine just what could have caused it. a vigil continues to grow for the victims of a mass shooting at a is a lob in orange county. mourners paid their respects last night to the eight people who died in seal beach when a gunman opened fire inside a salon on wednesday. a 9th victim was injured if in a shooting rampage. it was one of the worst mass killings in orange county history. prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for the man they say they believe is

responsible for the shooting. he made his first court appearance on friday. prosecutors say his ex-wife worked at the salon and was one of the eight people killed. the twoful involved in a custody battle over their son. he is being held without bail. missouri's governor is send inning the national guard to help search for a missing baby. 25 members of a guard police company will be looking for lisa irwin. the 11-month-old was reported missing from kansas city almost two weeks ago. her parents say she disappeared from her crib sometime overnight. yesterday police searched an abandoned home after getting a call about diapers and a backpack inside. but investigators say the items appear to have been in the house far longer than lisa has been missing. >> there's not anything we won't try, and we're certainly going to check this out. unfortunately the initial occupation isn't anything we're getting jazzed about. >> also yesterday a homeless man seen in the neighborhood was arrested on an outstanding

warrant. police say he's not a suspect in the baby's disappearance but they do want to question him. a 100,000-dollar reward is being offered for the safe return of lisa or for information leading to the conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance. the fbi is investigating the death after newborn found aboard a carnival crews ship. the crews line says the baby was found dead inside a guest's cabin on wednesday. the ship was docked in the virgin islands at that time. it returned to florida yesterday morning. the baby's mother, a 20-year- old passenger, was detained for questioning. no charges have been filed. philadelphia police say it is one of the more shocking crimes they have ever seen. they found four mentally disabled adults locked in a basement yesterday. the victims, three men and a woman, were all suffering from malnutrition. they were trapped in a basement behind a steel door that was chained up. they have the mental capacity after 10-year-old.

>> something like -- to know that something like that is going on within five feet away from you is shocking. >> police found the victims after investigating a report of squatters in that building. the four people are in the hospital in stable condition. it is not clear how long they had been locked up or who was taking care of them. petaluma police searching for a man who they say attacked a woman and tried to rape her. the woman was walking alone on western avenue when she noticed a man following her. police say the man caught up to the woman and pushed her into a nearby doorway. when the woman fought back and she began screaming, the man ran off. police searched the area, however they did not find him. vacaville police say four dogs that were poisoned during a robbery are now doing well. police say thieves stole nine medical marijuana plants from a backyard on friday. the thieves also apparently drugged the dogs to get to the plants. the dog's owner saw pieces of hot dogs, some of which had

been stuffed with pills, scattered across his yard. the dogs have since been treated. oakland police officers are turning to the public to get help protecting their four- legged partners. officers say the department's k- 9s need bulletproof vests. today members will be at the pet food express on broadway for a second day to ask for donations. the dog vests can cost as much as $3,000 each. >> with the budget issues that we have, it's hard enough just to get human vests replaced. >> not only does it help for potential stab wounds, gunshot wounds, it's just basic all around trauma, protects their torso. >> officers say the vests protect an important investment because police dogs are expensive costing as much as $50,000 each by the time they hit the street. and it's going to be a nice sunday out there. rosemary was telling us about the little bit of rain that moved through, but now it looks like it's going to be moving out. let's get over to rosemary for

apartment complex and a liquor store. police have not said what the motive would be. police are still looking for suspects and have not made any arrests. these shootings happened hours after the oakland mayor held a neighborhood safety summit to discuss ways to combat violent crime in the city. at that meeting, about 500 people showed up, the mayor and the interim police outlined their plan. that plan is to focus on 100 blocks in the city where the mayor says 90% of the shootings happened and violent crime happened. the mayor provided a map of the area but did not specify which 100 plox are included. saying that they are mostly in east and west oakland. the interim police chief says more police and city resources will go to that area. >> it's not just the police, no, they're going to see other city workers, city leadership, the school district, all the other efforts we mentioned today are going to be in that area. >> the reality is if we take care of these hundred blocks, crime goes down throughout the

city. these are the blocks where the young people that are committing the crimes come from. >> the mayor says the other city programs like graffiti abatement, better lighting, will also go to that 100 block area. oakland police are investigating the 85th and 86th homicides of the year. there were 95 homicides in the city all of last year. also, overnight in san francisco, investigators are searching for the person who shot at chp officers during a chase that ended with a crash. it happened on samson street not far from the transamerica building. police got a call around 11:30 last night that someone shot at a chp car during a chase. a driver crashed into a building and managed to run off. it's not clear what led up to the chase. also in san francisco, a pedestrian is in critical condition this morning after being hit in the crosswalk overnight. it happened around 10:00 last night on fulton street and 20th avenue. police say the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with

investigators. officers don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved. a san jose cemetery remains a crime scene this morning. multiple sources say 52-year- old steve was shot and killed while attending a funeral of jeffrey pettigrew, the president of the san jose chapter of the hells angels. a witness says a fight preceded yesterday's shooting. he was one of about 4,000 people attending the funeral at oak hills cemetery last month. >> it's ridiculous, especially in a memorial park. what were they thinking. >> the officers who initially arrived at the scene moments after this incident occurred report now that they believe, they suspect that the scene had been tampered with. >> police will not say how the scene was tampered w the mercury news reports that the man argued with and punched a fellow hells angels member who retaliated by shooting and

injuries. two san francisco police officers were slightly hurt overnight as they chased an armed man. police tell us two officers were at 25th and wisconsin streets just after midnight when they saw a man with a gun and ran away. both officers are ankle injuries and were take tone the whos for treatment. >> a weekend outing on the water in southern california ended in disaster. three women riding on a personal water craft died when they crashed into a motor boat. it happened on a reservoir east of downtown los angeles. four people on the boat had serious to minor injuries. homicide detectives and los angeles county lifeguards are investigating the crash to determine what could have caused it. petaluma police are searching for a man who they say attacked a woman and tried to rape her. the woman was walking alone on western avenue around 1:45 in the morning when she noticed a man following her. police say the man eventually caught up to the woman and pushed her into a nearby doorway. when the woman fought back and

began screaming, the man then ran off. police searched the area but did not find that individual. in the last 90 minutes, we received new video of occupy wall street protesters in new york city. police confronted them for blocking city treats early this morning. authorities have arrested more than 80 people in the past 24 hours. most for refusing to disperse. several protesters last night tried to take down police barriers. two officers were hurt in the scuffle. one had a head injury. to gain the most attention from tourists, demonstrators marched to citi bank, then to times square. thousands of demonstrators in los angeles joined yesterday's worldwide occupy protests. they made their way through downtown l.a. starting from the city's financial district. they targeted big banks. the march ended with a rally at city hall. and occupy sacramento tweeted

overnight in a 19 people were arrested at a demonstration, including cindy sheehan. she sass she was willing to get arrested if authorities wouldn't allow occupy protesters to continue staying overnight near the capitol grounds. sheehan camped outside the bush family ranch in texas after her son died in iraq in 2004. mourners tearfully paid respects last night to the eight people who died in seal beach when a gunman opened fire inside a salon on wednesday. a 9th victim was injured in that shooting rampage. it was one of the worst mass killings in orange county history. prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for the man they say is responsible for the shooting. he made his first court appearance on friday. prosecutors say his ex-wife worked at the salon and was one of the eight people killed. the two were involved in a

custody battle over their son. he is being held without bail. his arraignment has been postponed until november 29th. vacaville place say four dogs that were poisoned during a robbery are now doing well. police say thieves stole nine medical marijuana plants from a house on friday. the thieves apparently drugged the dogs to get to the plants. the dog's owner saw pieces of hot dogs, some of which had been stuffed with pills across the yard. the dogs were not seriously hurt. oakland police officers are turning to the public to get help for protecting their four- legged partners. officers say the department's k- 9's need bulletproof vests. the dog vests can cost as much as $3,000 each. >> with these budget issues we have, it's hard enough just to get human vests replace. >> not only does it help for

an early morning house fire. this is new video of the fire that started around 6:00 this morning at a farmhouse. firefighters had some trouble getting to the house because it is located at the top of the hill. they eventually did reach the home and knocked down the fire in just about an hour. no injuries have been reported. all morning we've been bringing you live pictures from washington d.c. where right now the martin luther king, jr. memorial is being dedicated. this comes after an almost two month delay and it's not without controversy. shannon travis is live this morning in the nation's capital where we're waiting for the president to address the crowd. >> reporter: good morning. you're absolutely right. the president has arrived here at the site just moments ago. he and the first family walked along the memorial wall that has a lot of inscriptions from martin luther king. he placed two things in the

time capsule. a signed copy of his inauguration address and a signed copy of his 2008 speech at the democratic national committee. we're waiting for the president at any moment now. we're not sure what message he'll convey, but i can tell you that the speech is part political, this gathering has been part political. far lot of people this memorial is long overdue. >> celebrating his life, his legacy, his dreams. after more than a decade of planning, many had gathered in washington for the martin luther king, jr. memorial dedication. among those attending, king's family, civil rights leaders, even president obama. the 16 hub ton granite mon -- the 1600-ton granite monument. >> i think that for future generations, they will know what dr. king stood for, righteousness, justice and peace. >> reporter: the executive architect says the project was

both professional and personal. >> this has been a labor of love for me for 15 years, yes. >> reporter: just as king's life was riddled with roadblocks, the memorial's construction did not escape controversy. at 30 feet high, it's taller than the nearby statues of jefferson and lincoln in their memorials. its sculptor, a chinese nannist, not an american -- a chinese nationalist, not an american. i've been waiting for the president to give his remarks here at this memorial. it's worth noting that the president is a direct beneficiary of a lot of the successes of the civil rights movement as the first african- american president of the united states. one other thing of note, this statue, this monument will be the first on the national mall dedicated to an african- american. >> really an historic day.

backpack inside. but investigators say the items appeared to have been in the house far longer than lisa has been reported missing. >> there's not anything we won't try, and we're certainly going to check this out. unfortunately the initial openings isn't anything we're getting jazzed about. >> also yesterday a homeless man seen in the neighborhood was arrested on an outstanding warrant. police say he is not a suspect in the baby's disappearance, but they do want to question him. a 100,000-dollar reward is being offered for the safe return of lisa. the fbi is investigating the death of a newborn found aboard a carnival cruise ship. the babe with a biwas found dead inside the cabin on wednesday. it returned to florida just yesterday morning. the baby's mother, a 20-year- old passenger was detained for questioning. no charges have been filed. philadelphia police say it's one of the more shocking crimes they've seen.

they found four mentally disabled adults locked in a basement yesterday. the victims, three men and a woman, were all suffering from malnutrition. police say they were trapped in in a basement behind a steel door that was chained up and that they all had the mental capacity of a 10-year-old. >> to know that something like that is going on within five feet away from you is shocking. >> police found the victims after investigating a report of squaders in the -- squatters in the building. the four people are now in the hospital in stable condition. in our election 2012 coverage. g.o.p. candidates for president will gather tuesday in las vegas for another debate, but one candidate will not be there. former utah governor huntsman is boycotting the debate. the boycott is in response to nevada's decision to hold its caucus on january 14. that earlier date is complicating the early primary

schedules and could force new hampshire to hold its primary in december. instead of taking part in the debate, huntsman will hold a town hall style meeting. businessman hermann cain is campaigning this weekend in tennessee. >> if they can build the great wall of china on the side of a mountain centuries ago, we can build a fence on the southern border if we want to. >> that was cain yesterday in tennessee pushing for the construction of a new fence on the u.s. mexico border. cain went on to say the fence he wants to build will be 20 feet high, have barbed wire on the top and be electrified. minnesota congresswoman bachmann is also pushing for a border fence. bachmann defended her stance saying being in favor of a fence does not mean she or others are prejudiced against hispanics. she added, border security is a national security issue and needs to be addressed.

nearly half a century has past since that historic march on washington. a day when thousands upon thousands gathered for jobs and for freedom. that is what our school children remember best when they think of doctor king. his booming voice across this mall calling on america to make freedom a reality for all of god's children. when the discord of our nation would be transformed into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. it is right that we honor that march, that we lift up dr. king's i have a dream speech, for without that shining moment, without dr. king's glorious words, we might not have had the courage to come as far as we have.

because of that hopeful vision, because of dr. king's moral imagination, barricades began to fall and bigotry began to fade. doors of opportunity swung open for an entire generation. yes, laws changed, but hearts and minds changed as well. look at the faces here around you. and you see an america that is more fair and more free and more just than the one dr. king addressed that day. we are right to save they're slow but certain progress. progress that's expressed itself in a million ways, large and small across this nation, every single day. as people of all colors and credes live together and work together and fight alongside

one another and learn together and build together and love one another. so it is right for us to celebrate today dr. king's dream and his vision of unity. and yet it is also important on this day to remind ourselves that such progress did not come easily. that dr. king's faith was hard won. that it sprung out of a harsh reality and some bitter disappointments. it is right for us to celebrate dr. king's marvelous orator but it is worth remembering that progress did not come from words alone. progress was hard. progress was purchased through enduring the smack of belly clubs and the blast of fire hoses.
