was a face that oakland police still had not yet seen. for that, the interim chief apologizes. in seconds, easy money pawn and jewelry on international boulevard took a $2,000 hit. when a bold thief took a chain. fearing for his safety, the store owner asked us not to show his face. >> he hopped into an infinity and they took off. >> reporter: but not before security cameras took a crystal clear picture of his face. a valuable lead for police or so the manager thought. >> and i still have not seen any police officers. >> reporter: hours after the brazen calls and three calls to police. >> were they going to come today or tomorrow? >> reporter: not one offer had stopped by to see the crucial clues. >> i have the suspect pretty much in your hands right now. i think you should come here and at least take a look.

>> reporter: i spoke tonight with oakland's interim police. officers were responding to higher priority, more serious crimes in the area including a shooting and a robbery. but the chief said he finds it hard to believe that throughout the day, not one officer was able to stop by the store and that he plans to look into the matter. >> they just unfortunately don't have time for something i guess you can call it minor. to me, it's not minor. so it's a big loss for us. >> reporter: after we aired the video on ktvu news at 5:00 and 6:00 an officer and another city then went to our website and was able to identify the thief and so tonight, oakland police are working to finally track him down. reporting live tonight, here at police headquarters, i'm heather holmes ktvu news. the three uc berkeley graduates offered their support to the occupy oakland

demonstrations this afternoon. shane boward said that the occupy oakland was quite a homecoming. >> this feels like coming back to oakland, coming back to this. thank you so much guys. >> reporter: boward and pattal returned home last month. we posted the edited speeches of the three. just search for the occupy oakland tab. hundreds of protesters remain camped out and following a confrontation with police, they're worried officers can force them to leave. janine de la vega is in the city and tells us a deadline for them to break down their tents is right now, janine. >> reporter: this about 200 people occupying the plaza. they started making noise because they found out police might be coming soon. they don't have tents but they

have tarps they are sleeping under. earlier they were told by police they needed to leave by 10:00 tonight. so far that doesn't seem to be enforced and no one is moving yet. hundreds of from testers took over market street during rush hour traffic. at first police stayed ahead of them keeping cars out of the way. but that quickly ended when demonstrators starting pushing down mission in between vehicles. you can see an aerial view of the marshals and police district. they spent about half an hour on the streets then went back to their base. >> they took our laptops, the money jar. >> reporter: police were enforcing a city code that prohibits camping on the plaza. five people were arrested for battery on an officer and

than wall street for the nation's economic problems. the polls were taken as the occupy wall street movement hits the one month mark. in a usa today poll 64% said the federal government was more at fault while 30% are blaming big financial institutions. the numbers are similar by a paper called the hill. talk about the sign of times. a new app helps protesters alert family and friends when they're getting arrested. it's called i'm getting arrested and it will quickly send a text to a number of people when you hit the bulls eye. there's no charge and no word on if it will be developed for the iphone. and we will bring you the latest developments as they happen. an east bay mother is racked with grief tonight and police are now investigating

how her baby died at day care. jessica smith spoke through tears as she held a photo of her 5 -month-old son kaere. she says she brought her baby to this health care center on 85th avenue on friday. but around 2:00 in the afternoon received a frantic call saying the child had stopped breathing and was taken to highland hospital. >> my son did not make it. i don't know how to pass this day because i had just seen him that morning. i'm like it's not real, i just held him in my arms. >> reporter: the coroner is investigateing the death but smith says she was told her son may have died from sids. smith says the health care provider put the baby to sleep in a bed because there was no crib and the child was sleeping on his back. the american academy of pediatrics recommends babies sleep on their stomachs. the health care provider did not return our calls today. there is new information tonight about the latest fatal

officer involved shooting in san jose. today police identified the three officers involved. the department said sergeant sergio carabian shot the fatal shot yesterday at the park side apartments. officer kimber and juan fired shots. officers had responded to a report of a man acting suspiciously. oakland's population is half of san jose, but it has seen eight officer involved shootings so far this year. new concern about european debt took a toll on wall street today. the dow fell 247 points. nasdaq dropped 52 points. both indexes slipped into the red for the year: germany's

finance chief weakened expectations. research in motion slid 6% leaving text stocks lower. the company make it is blackberry. starting wednesday it will give free premium acts to users who experienced outages last week. there's a warning out tonight about west nile virus in santa rosa. officials say a mosquito found in western santa rosa has now tested positive for that disease. so they plan to set additional mosquito traps to check near by areas. they are asking residents to get rid of standing water which provides a breeding ground for phos mosquitoes and to be sure to guard against mosquito bites at dusk and dawn. the 6.9 magnitude quake, loma prieta killed hundreds throughout the area. officials reminded everyone

new at 10:00, robbers strike again in contra costa county. a 7/11 store in golf club road was the latest target. lloyd lacuesta spoke with the store's owner and residents who are know questioning their safety. >> reporter: this 7/11 store as you said on golf club road is the latest in a series of armed take over robberies causing fear in contra costa county. police say four masked men entered a store, two pointed guns at the clerk then cleared the register of cash and fled. we spoke to the store owner over the phone tonight. >> it's happening again and again. and this is scary for the community at large because nobody feeling safe. >> reporter: there's been about

santiago then dumping his body yesterday. santiago was shot at a marijuana growing site tended by the suspect. one of those arrested is the victim's brother-in-law. two gunmen who opened fire last night at a 3-year-old's birthday party were aiming at a rival gang member. a 9-year-old and 17-year-old girl were shot. none of the injuries appear to be life threatening. police say the person they believe may have been the intended victim was not shot. president obama is on a three day road trip pushing his jobs bill since the $450 billion package was defeated by senate republicans the president is now offering it in pieces. >> the fact is, let me say this. let me say this, i have bent over backwards, i have shown myself to be willing again and again to try to cooperate. >> reporter: the president added that democrats are getting mad at him for trying

to work with the gop. the white house insists this week's bus tour through north carolina and virginia is not a series of campaign events. a new poll shows the republican presidential nomination is wide open with mitt romney and herman cain in a virtual tie. 26% of gop voters favor mitt romney, 25% favor cain who's numbers are up 15% in a matter of a month. more telling may be that 67% of voters say they might still change their mind. john huntsman had only 1% of the poll but is not giving up yet. recently he moved his campaign head headquarters which seems to indication that he is

angel and fantastic friend. >> reporter: unknown then, townsend would be killed at that funeral. townsend thought he had disrepresented pettigrew after his death. townsend talked that day with pride about being a marine, a boxer, a soccer dad to him children and about being found not guilty after a fight at a strip bar. i returned the next day for a comment about the overnight arrest of pettigrew's killer. he told me right after an interview with me ran, he said he started getting calls from rival gangs that said, now we know what you look like and you're a dead man. i didn't use his picture again

new information tonight on exactly what killed two time indianapolis 500 winner dan wheldon at yesterday's race in las vegas. wheldon's car went airborne and smashed into a car following a huge crash. wheldon had accepted a $5 million challenge as he won the race starting dead last. and every year indy comes to infinon. and dan wheldon has raced in that event. >> reporter: there is some excitement as the ferrari take as spin around the racetrack.

there's also sadness here. it's been called one of the worse crashes in memory. after a 15 car crash killed wheldon. the impact is being felt at infinon race way. >> just really a bright, energetic, engaging guy, it's just a real human tragedy to have lost him from our sport. >> reporter: wheldon was involved with infinon. the driving school's blog featuring him on the front page. dennis star is a fire officer. he took us down on a track check. something that he does before every race to help prevent accidents. darnell is on the same drill in las vegas. he watched the accident on a play back. >> am i glad i wasn't in that one? now, yes. >> reporter: the possibility of

soon. the altercation between the two coaches may have been sparked in the first quarter when harbaugh challenged a touchdown and received a 15- yard penalty as a result. according to numerous blogs, detroit head coach seemed to take pleasure when that challenge resulted in a penalty and strutted up and down the sideline yelling toward the 49ers bench. schwartz appears to say learn the rules harbaugh. the speculation is that thought fueled harbaugh's exuberance following the game. on our facebook page today, we asked if harbaugh's reaction. tell us what you think on facebook. parents, teachers and administrators say they are

upset following more vandalism on campus. they say it's the sixth time vandals have struck this month. a maintenance worker says it takes a lot of money and a couple of months to make the repairs. one father told us his son and other students like to play there before classes start. >> we came in it was all roped off as you can see over there. he was highly disappointed because they can't play on the play structure in the morning. >> reporter: a few miles away, vandals tagged mount diablo vista elementary school. recycle bins outside the kitchen were set on fire. after years of budget cuts, california ranks close to the bottom when it comes to spending on education. the independent california budget project says california is 46th in the country. compared to the rest of the u.s., california spent almost $3,000 less per student. to bring it in line with the rest of the country, california

would have to spend another $17 billion on education which works out to an increase of 32% from current spending levels. the state has frozen the sales tax breaks for green emergency companies following the bankruptcy of solyndra. the authority has approved tax exemptions to 33 companies so far this year. fremont based solyndra received $25 million. a hearing is scheduled in sacramento on wednesday to see if the program is actually helping to create jobs. mountain view police are asking for the public's help in finding two men accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year- old girl. the attack happened at 6:00 in the evening but the girl says she's not sure which day. she says two men pulled her into the bathroom, groped her and ran off when they heard voices outside. she described one man as white and the other latino and both appeared to be in their early

20s. a deputy who killed two bicyclists with his patrol car wants to end his probation early and get back to work. lloyd lacuesta spoke with the lawyer and the victim's parents who are not happy with that request. it's a story you will see only on two. >> reporter: a former santa clara county sheriff's deputy is asking a judge to shorten his sentence for accidentally killing two cyclists on steven canyon road almost four years ago. council acknowledged he fell asleep at the wheel on patrol. council pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicle manslaughter, served four months of house arrest. fulfilled 400 hours of community service and now wants his three year probation terminated eight months early. >> we've done so that tommy could go out and apply for a law enforcement position and move on with his life. >> reporter: the parents of galt and peterson are

police in the orange community released the frantic 911 phone calls. eight people ended up dying in the gunfire.

one of the 911 calls is from a woman who was in a back room with others pleading for police to come now. >> he's still shooting right now. he's still shooting right now. >> okay, and how many shots have you heard, ma'am. >> ten. >> do we know who the shooter is? >> we think we do. it's one of the hair stylists husbands. >> reporter: scott decrie was arrested and is now charged with eight counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for the woman who survived the shooting. he is currently being held without bail. los angeles police say it is embarrassing. thieves made out with thousands of weapons from an l.a.p.d. s.w.a.t. training center. all of the weapons have been altered so they could not fire live rounds. the theft happened last thursday. police say thieves made their way through a series of metal doors and then made off with 15mp5 sub machine guns and 15 colt .45 caliber handguns. in news of the world
