crime surge in san jose. there have been 34 homicides compared to 18 in all of last year. 17 of the killings this year have been gang related. last year it was only five. as for officer involved shootings, there have been six this year, three of which were fatal. that's compared to only four last year with one of them fatal. it may have taken 24 hours but oakland police today did go by a pawn store to pick up evidence of a brazen daytime crime. as we first reported here, surveillance camera caught this man stealing a $2,000 gold chain from a store. the manager made repeated calls to police but officers did not come by to investigate until ktvu news aired this video. police say they were responding to more serious crimes at the time yesterday. sources tell us the man has been identified tonight and they are working to track him down. in san francisco, tensions are high on what to do with

13 months early. senate mcconnell says lay off decisions should remain with the states. the president's advanced team may be a little red faced tonight. someone stole a pentagon truck carrying equipment for the president's bus tour. the truck was filled with presidential seals and podiums which the president was supposed to use on the next leg of his trip in virginia. that vehicle disappeared from outside a hotel in richmond virginia. it turned out today at another hotel. social security recipients is getting a raise this january, their first increase in about three years. 65billion beneficiaries will find out tomorrow just how big that increase is going to be. the cost of living adjustment is based on a measure of explosion. experts are projecting that the increase will be about 3.5% which works out to roughly $41

more per month. after several record quarters, apple today reported fourth quarter earnings. this is the cupertino's company first report. sunny vale tech giant yahoo managed to meet earnings. $293million or 23-cents per share from the july to september period. that's actually down from 29- cents per share last year but the decline wasn't unexpected. analysts say the report sheds light on why yahoo fired carol light last september. the it was an up day in washington with the dow making up what it lost yesterday. stocks surged into the close

a train collision in southern california today shut down part of a busy freeway and two schools. it started just after 2:00 this morning in the san san bernardino city of colton. a train derailment carrying a toxic chemical. it took some time to determine that none of the chemical leaked from the cars. part of interstate 10 was shut for 2.5 hours. one high profile high flying company is on a hiring bing. it expects the last three years to come. consumer editor tom vacar joins us now from the company's headquarters in buehrleing game

the economy. reporting live from buehrleing game, consumer editor tom vacar. drivers on highway 50 could soon be allowed to speed up in some areas. a caltrans spokeswoman says the city is planning to increase the speed limit in south lake tahoe and myers. caltrans says construction has added to traffic delays in recent months and the speed increase could ease some of that congestion. a block buster trade today including the oakland raiders and cincinnati bengals. the raiders are getting carson palmer from the bengals in exchange for a first round pick next year and a conditional pick in 2013. palmer is a former number one pick who also won the heisman trophy when he played in usc. coming up at 6:00 we'll have

customs enforcement agency or i.c.e. deported a record number of people this last fiscal year. the agency says nearly 480,000 people were removed from the u.s. of those deported 55% had been convicted of felonies or misdemeanors. that's an 89% increased in the number of criminals being deported from three years ago. the formal president of mexico made a startling statement in mexico today. vicente fox said one way to stop all the bloodshed is to legalize drugs in mexico. >> 50,000 lives, 50,000 kids from 15 to 25 year olds are getting killed in the last five years. >> fox spoke at the cato institute. he said mexico must respond to the brutal violence of the mexico drug cartels with bold new ideas. and he argued that legalized the sale of drugs would curve

area's economy afloat. more federal funding was announced just today on a project to keep the port of oakland competitive. rob roth is live now to tell us the additional money also means job security for some. >> reporter: the shipping channels here at the oakland port must be at least 50 feet deep so those big container ships can come through. but keeping those waters need constant work and a boat load of money. two years ago the port of oakland dug deep, deep in the harbor from 42 feet to 50 feet by dredging. today congresswoman barbara lee announced she secured $550 million in funds for the dredging project and to maintain the 50-foot depth. >> with the deeper harbor we can now accommodate newer and larger container ships carrying crucial ships between the united states and other countries. >> reporter: maintaining the depth is a constant battle, sometime like being at the

beach, when you fill a hole it digs back up. so you have to keep digging or dredging to maintain the proper depth. nearly 200,000 container ships come through oakland every year. it supplies 70,000 jobs in the bay area. jim riley has one of those jobs he's an engineer who often works on the dredging project. he is glad the federal money came through. >> it means the collective group that people that do what i do get to stay in the area. they don't have to start looking for jobs in other state, in other countries. >> we're not just talking about jobs for folks that are out of work. we're also looking at new jobs created that people who haven't had a job will have access to. >> reporter: congresswoman lee also said she is sponsoring federal legislation that will ensure that a special pot of money be set aside each year for dredging at the port of oakland. rob roth, ktvu news. a task force is now

searching for a group of violent robbers accused for a series of take over robberies. the most recent robbery took place over the weekend at this 7/11 in pleasanthill. just before 4:30 a.m. sunday, the robbers entered the store wearing masks, pointed guns at the clerk and stole money from the register before taking off. over the past few weeks, there have been about a dozen similar robberies in walnut creek, concord, and antioch. >> i hope they catch you guys, one of the things i can't hardly stand. i cannot stand a thief. >> all four robbers had masks and hooded sweatshirts which made them hard to identify. police are looking into a gang fight that broke out. seven men were involved in the fistfight last friday afternoon. they are all enrolled in the offices operation peacemaker fellowship. they happened to show up at the

office at the same time unexpectedly and the fight apparently started after an exchange of looks and then some heated words. police found blood covering the walls and floor but so far have been unable to locate any of the men involved. putting a leash on dog walkers in san francisco. san francisco's sal castaneda tonight talks with a supervisor now pushing permits for those who care for man's best friend. in a city where an estimated 1/3 of households have dogs. dog walking is a vital industry. now one city supervisor thinks it's time to tightening the leash. >> if the dog walker doesn't know how to control the dog he or she is walking that can result in a lot of problems. and you know it's important to emphasize that there are many very responsible well trained dog walkers. >> so what's the problem, the supervisor wants to make sure the dog walkers are not putting dogs or people at risk. the idea is to make sure that

the number of homes in california that have gone into fore closure is up nearly 26%. that's according to a new report looking at the third quarter of the fiscal year. default notices had hit a three year low in the previous quarter. analysts say the new numbers may just reflect a backlog. lenders began delaying foreclosures. california drug criminals are now turning to new tactics to avoid getting caught. maureen naylor is live in the santa cruz mountains with the new trend in illegal marijuana growths. >> reporter: illegal growths are usually tucked into steep

areas. but officials say they are having a harder time finding them because the pot grows are moving to private areas. this assistant manager says equestrians are running into marijuana growths. >> he was really glad to see that cleaned up. >> reporter: the campaign against marijuana production which conducted this pot bust just wrapped up its season and announced it seized 6.2 million plants this year. half of last year's totals. the cooler weather meant smaller plants and that criminals are moving off public land. >> we're seeing a shift into public land and also backyard what are called backyard growths. >> reporter: this san jose professor says a substantial challenge for law enforcement. >> you have issues in terms of privacy, your rights to be able to go on to that property. it just creates more barriers

disney park mostly on brass fittings. in a statement today a disneyland spokeswoman called the claims baseless and said disneyland fully complies with state regulations to provide a safe environment for all of its guests. authorities say a man got drunk then made his 9-year-old daughter his designated driver. >> 9 years old. >> right. listen, we're leaving and she's driving. i'm drunk. >> reporter: police say this video taken over the weekend at a michigan gas station tells the story. the man pulls up to the pump, a little girl climbs out of the drivers seat. the 9-year-old was sitting on a booster seat behind the wheel. her father went into the gas station, bought cigarettes for herself, a caramel apple for his daughter. they then got back into the van. with his little girl getting
