bus. this is ktvu channel 2 news... well,good morning to you welcome to wednesday, it is october 19th, i am dave clark. we begin with breaking news in san francisco, a huge crash involving a burning truck and several cars causing big delays on highway 101, even the bay bridge, sal has details on what is happening right now. this is breaking news in san francisco, as we are getting more daylight, we are seeing 101 is shut down and it is still shut down this crash occurred just before 5:00 a.m. where a truck overturned and collided with several other vehicles and burst into flames. i want to show you a picture from one of our crews on the freeway, this is southbound 101 completely shut down, and that's the command post there, fire crews are attended people

who are injured and it looks like one of the persons who are involved. a lot of police officers involved, fire crews, there is one person with a bandage on his head and this crash is not going anywhere any time soon and it will cause a huge delay. here comes -- yes, here comes some pictures we took earlier of what happened and these are pictures -- this is new video of the fires that was going on. you can see the fire just completely shut down 101 and it was completely dangerous for a while. it was taken before fire crews arrived on the scene and that's why they had to come to a standstill. it looks like the vehicles are completely damaged and it will be awhile before they get them out of the way. at 6:02 let's go to steve. inland areas, yesterday they were still in the 80s 50s and 60s coast and bay, there is

a strong west wind and temperatures drop off and it looks like they will level off and we will have our five-day forecast shortly. occupied protesters may be wearing out their welcome outside and they have turned this area into attend city and we will talk about concerns about conditions and what the protesters are saying, here is more. >> reporter: one of the injured we found this morning here in the plaza, a lot of different opinions, a lot of different voices and you will not find anyone person who will be a spokesperson here and you will not find anybody who will say this is a message of occupied oakland. we have talked to a lot of people who say we have found a lot of stuff inside and homeless are being fed, homeless are being sheltered and the city has sent out a few

you are working for that i don't like... >> reporter: all right back here live occupied oakland that was one situation we dealt with within the last hour or so, several people have been up to talk with us, a lot of people are saying it is early and again not one spokesperson, another crew felt threatened enough to call oakland police and police came out however with no situation develop being and no tense situation they took off and left. it is quiet and as far as the conditions they have met the city's concerns and some people are saying the city may be ramping up to kick them out and that's the very latest here from occupied oakland. ktvu channel 2 news. oakland firefighters battling a tough fire at a home that had a legal growing marijuana operation. they rushed to the oakland

hills around 4:30 last night four people including two children got out unharmed. the fire started in the basement but they had a tough time getting into the rooms. >> the fire was under control once the family stated there was a fire we were able to get to the fire but the only problem was the basement was outside. >> the home's electrical system was overloaded and they are telling anyone who has a legal marijuana business go through the proper channels and make sure your house can accommodate the extra electricity demand. as we have reported a burning truck is causing huge delays on the bay bridge and highway 101, tara moriarty just arrived on the scene, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we are actually underneath the 101 overpass and firefighters have rigged up the ladders and they are assisting

victims. there is possibly one person in critical condition, two have minor injuries and from what we are gathering, there was a tanker truck, we don't know if it turned on its side or what happened but apparently it leaked some fuel onto the roadway and if you look over here, if you can actually come back live, i want to show you what they are doing and fire crews are laying down something to soak up. it looks like churnings of couldn't -- chunks of concrete and they are unloading huge bags and we believe they are absorbing them and trying to soak up all of that fuel. now from what we gathered it looks like this is actually northbound where all of the emergency personnel are. southbound seems to be running perfectly fine, we are seeing

cars going back and forth but on 101 is where the problem seems to be, you definitely want to avoid this area because traffic is at a standstill and we are coming across the bay bridge. we were backed up from the moment we got off to this location so we will stay here, keep you posted and see what sort of information we can gather. the chief is supposed to be coming down here in a minute and we will check in with sal sal castaneda to see how we can get around this mess, sal? i want to show you chopper 2 and it shows southbound 101 heading out of san francisco and this is the westbound bay bridge and what we are looking at is the bridge coming off, just as i suspected it's not okay because all these cars have to go somewhere. this is going to back up

traffic onto the bridge and there will be a big back up on to the toll plaza. southbound 101 and our news chopper 2 is doing the quick pan over there to show you what is going on there and as we pan to the left, you can see that there is the freeway southbound 101 at the 80 split here just to the left is where the crash is. so if you are trying to get out, go to 280 interchange. as you pass the 80 split, that is where the crash is. northbound 101, that is northbound coming in from candle stick area or the other part of san francisco, northbound looks okay getting to the downtown area but southbound 101 is completely closed. get out of the city that way if that is what you need to do. let's look at the toll plaza, we don't have a big backup yet but there will be someone soon.

let you know more as we find out. turkish soldiers reportedly launched an attack after curtish rebels are blamed for multiple attacks in turkey today that killed 24 soldiers an injured 18 others. now turkey has launched a ground a salt and air assault into those attacks. president barack obama is wrapping up his three day bus tour trying to win support for his job's plan and live in our washington d.c. room, they are going to use firefighters as part of today's sales pitch, here is more. >> reporter: he will talk about his plan to be spent bay area firefighters, cities will get the money if they agree to hire

get to the spot, i want to let you know northbound 101 is still opened. we will have more coming in with a wider view of this area. the crash is shut down just passed the 80 split and you can use the central freeway from octavia to the freeway, and getting on the lower deck of the bay bridge, we should be able to do that and it is not affecting, you cannot use southbound 101. westbound bridge is going to be slow because this crash will follow that. >> let's go and take a look at that bay bridge toll area from the incline section, and you can see traffic is busy getting on to that span. >> other parts of the bay looking good, 101 and 280, some clouding and of course we are doing nicely. highway 4 is slow throughout the entire antioch city limits and it gets better in pittsburgh and in bay point,

let's go to steve. higher elevations they are down as much as 20 degrees compared to yesterday and they are dominating and there is plenty out there and they have listed well inland. 50s and 60s red wood city, city 59, napa is in there, 57 in livermore and the system that came by to the north, there is one more out there that will keep us from warming up and we will start to turn things around. low clouds and drizzle some sun, there will be a breezy windy pattern here today, it will be cooler for everybody. as i said even higher elevations for those living up in the hills. friday looks to be warmer and we have sunshine with afternoon temperatures on the weekend. back to you. starbucks have critics who claim its coffee is too dark

. good morning, breaking news, we have highway 101 in front of the ups building just after the 80 split, a tow truck is getting into position to try and remove the wreck, we will have more on how this is affect being the morning commute. he is now under arrest. scott larson got the nickname because of his bald head and thick glasses. he is suspected of robbing 12 banks one in south san francisco and one in novato. he turned himself in to the fbi monday and so far he has only been charged with one robbery and that was in san diego. the first of its kind for mill layer why, -- malaria, it shows experimental shots cut the risk of the disease in young children by half. it was developed by smith klein

this starts just after the jason bay bridge and the bay bridge is highway 80 and most people transition on to southbound 101 which is where the crash happened. northbound 101 is still opened and southbound 101 is closed and westbound bay bridge is taking a hit coming off the upper deck and there is a big back up at the toll plaza. some debris is actually falling down to some of the streets below. let's go to tara moriarty as they clean up some of this mess, tara? >> reporter: that's right, two actually hit the guardrails, i am told by the firefighter and you can see the overpass, this is 101 and that's chunks that actually fell. you can see firefighters with their huge ladders reaching up top there and we did receive information just a couple of minutes ago from firefighters on the scene here, he said one person is in critical condition

and two people are in minor condition. we do know the driver of the truck who went up in flames is on his way to the hospital if not there already. again this happened around 5:00 this morning and you can take some live pictures of news chopper 2 if we could. again southbound near her pose is a -- southbound truck with two on it, it had some sort of an accident where it jackknifed and it looked like a huge fireball. these trailers are about 20 feet long and they were behind the cab. the cab was actually on fire and the trailers were carrying nonhazardous cement material. as sal mentioned there is back up from the bay bridge all the way north of caesar chavez. if you look at this ladder we are told they had to snake a hose to have enough water

because all the engines have enough water but it is only 500 gallons so they wanted to hook up to a fire hydrant and that's why crews are here right now. on top there are ambulances and they are in stand by mode and we are told the people who were injured were taken to the hospital. days can be numbered and occupied protesters have been camped out for ten days now. we have someone out there talking with the protesters and talking about conditions... >> i am on the air right now. >> reporter: i'm sorry pam, we are talking to people as we speak out here in occupied oakland and it has been a conversation in the encampment, some people and the gentleman right here does not want us to show the encampment and they certainly do not want our cameras. the city has sent out a letter

federal building downtown which starts at 1:00. and the occupied movement in san francisco is putting a strain on city resources. mayor ed lee said they have spent more than $100,000 on city police and clean up. protesters are angry over yesterday's arrest and they want to stay at herman plaza and the mayor said while he supports the spirit of the movement camping is illegal at the plaza. bridges and overpasses are in bad shape. the new transportation study found 20% of the bridges and overpasses are in need of work or increased studies. we have to point out the group that conducted this study is campaigning for more federal spending for transportation

issues. the 55 million americans who get social security benefits will get their first cost of living increase in three years. right now the average social security check is just over $1,080. now they will be getting another $0 more -- $40 more every month. the inflation was so bad, there was no cost of living this year or last year. east bay hills fire disaster killed 25 people, sal owned one of the 3700 homes that were destroyed on that day in 1991 and he remembers what happened clearly. he heard a warning which gave him just moments to escape the flames. >> suddenly we hear a voice over a handheld speaker phone and he said very loud and clear : you must evacuate your home

now! the fire is only 100 yards away. >> well his neighbor took a photo of the walls of flames as it came on to their street. it took him two years to get back into his home. now tonight, ktvu channel 2 news will present a special which starts at 9:00 p.m. on that fire followed by our 10:00 news. a lot happening some major messes in our commute and sal is back to bring us up to date on everything that is happening. just after the 80 split, a truck burst into flames and some people were injured and we are not clear on the extent of the injuries but northbound 101 is getting through but southbound is not and this is having an affect on the bridge coming into san francisco and most people are being forced on to streets at the civic center

coming on to the bridge and that's certainly not good for street traffic and for bridge traffic. another crash on 80 westbound involving a motorcycle west 80 at the mcarthur maze police are trying to make sure nobody gets hurt as they come up on this crash. traffic is going to be very slow coming out of the berkeley area so if you are driving on 80 west, give yourself plenty of time because this crash is causing a big delay. we have slow traffic on to highway 4, not only on to antioch but 680 still looks good from the van nearby why -- dinesh why bridge. -- dinesh -- van nearby why bridge. some are up around 2500 feet and they are cooler than they were this time yesterday,

low clouds a blanket all the way up the valley and when you get a low cloud deck around 2 5,000 feet it brings cooler air mass in place and breezy sunny to windy later on today and it will be the coolest day. 50s and 60s over by the coast, santa rosa will be 76 tomorrow, just one degree cooler for san francisco. concord from 73 to 74, a couple of days 60s and 70s and the fog is as big as i have seen for a while. all of that system went by to the north and it was 83 two days ago. there will be some parts of the city that do not get above 61 even though they are sitting at 59 right now. the system that came by, it has already moved into idaho but

of president barack obama's bus tour which is going through north carolina and virginia. the president is using that bus tour to push passage of his jobs' plan. walnut police are investigating a racially charged death threat delivered to a 5th grade girl's desk. police say they don't believe the girl is in danger but the 11-year-old has not returned to school since receiving that threat and the mother says the notice included a drawing of her daughter being shot. >> the incident was my daughter received a notice saying -- bleep, i am going to get my dad's gun and kill you. >> reporter: the school did not contact her and she demanded they call police. the school superintendent declined our request for an interview. the sheriff in charge for

the hundred for those escaped exotic animals says more than 30 are still on the loose. we want to show you the video near zaneville ohio. they are trying to locate lions tigers and wolfs before anybody gets hurt. they are ordered to shoot them. now local school districts have canceled classes and they are telling people to stay inside. the animals escaped yesterday evening and deputies are responding to large animals and found the farm's owner dead and all cages open. there is no word on how he died. they are expected to resume at 7:00 and those negotiations

ended late last night. there is david stern after a marathon negotiation in new york. both sides left without making any comments and today is the 111th day of the nba lock out. game one starts tonight and texas rangers will be playing against the st. louis cardinals. both teams will be working out of the stadium in st. louis and they are being told to get there as early as possible. first lady michelle obama and vice-president joseph biden will be there tonight. you can watch the world series right there on ktvu channel 2 news on fox and it begins at 4:30 this afternoon. we have a special edition of ktvu channel 2 news at 4:00. >> sal is back over there

covering traffic, sal? the crash on 101 in san francisco still has 101 closed just passed the 80 split but the bay bridge is taking a beating because it feeds on it southbound 101 to get through the city and that's not happening and a lot of people are getting off the civic city exit and they are filtering down and it's having an effect on city streets as well. a crash with a motorcycle, traffic will be slow in berkeley getting down to the mcarthur maze and if you are not going near the bay bridge, you have to deal with this if you are going on interstate 880. if you are driving in the south bay 101 is slow from near the capital expressway but 85 and 280 is still pretty good on the way into the valley.

of only 64 and i don't think there will be areas that are 60 and 59 for some because there is too much fog out there. up near the oregon border, that lifted the fog and ushered in a cool air mass. 50s and 60s on the temperatures and they are stuck. the breeze is out of the west or the southwest or the northwest but it's all a sea breeze and in fact all the way to santa clara valley everybody is dealing with a westerly breeze. there is still one more front that slides into the pacific northwest and that will inch its way back and warmup by the weekend. low clouds, fog breezy 70s inland, 50s and near the coast and bay, not much of a change, friday they are starting to turn it around and it carries into the weekend for sunshine
