his two kids and just before 10:00 p.m., dozens of rounds from an automatic weapon poured into his son's room. >> he was upset with the neighbor for some reason and decided to shoot well over 30 rounds into this house narrowly missing the nine-year-old child. police say that 50-year-old doran long, jr. is not only responsible for shooting up the concord home but also responsible for shooting up the building. long worked here as a security guard. police say that long was sent home from the job around 6:30 last night after allegedly shooting up his neighbors' house and his car as on the streerkts he returned to work. long started firing into the building. it turned into a gun battle as fellow guards returned fire. a supervisor was hit with a bullet but will survive his injury. long fled to el dorado county but was arrested before 6:00

p.m. by deputies. >> he was taken into custody without incident. >> we heard that long was bit on by a police dog during the arrest. he was briefly taken to the hospital and then was taken to the county jail. detectives, right now, on the way up to el dorado county to retrieve long and bring him back down here to richmond. you can see the damage done by this fire late last night. the man who owns this house tells me that one of the bullets actually hit his little boy's bed, narrowly missing him and another child in the house. report can live in concord, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. oakland police showed up in large number this is morning at the secondary site of the occupy oakland protest. a group of pro terses set up a camp at snow park at 20th and harrison street because of overcrowding and tension at the primary site in front of city hall. officers say they received a call just before 5:00 a.m. of a possible medical emergency. but they didn't find any

emergency when they walked in pairs through the park. protesters came out of their tent and stood by quietly. >> we are trying to start a good relationship with people around us. and talk to people around us to explain to them what we are doing. >> there is no plan to kick them out of the park then? >> not that i know of. >> the police sergeant in charge said that a large number of officers came because of confrontations they had with protesters at the other site in oakland, but there were no problems this morning. a union-backed lobbying group for nurses set up a first aid station for occupy protesters in san francisco's justin herman plaza. national nurses union planned the same for other protest sites. the organization is a combined effort of the california nurses association and other nurses union around the country. >> it's important for the nurses to come out and support this movement. we all have to stay united for

the greater good of america. >> national nurses united has called for universal public health care and other social services funded by a tax on wall street transactions. californians got a reminder this morning that we live in earthquake country b.a.r.t. was one of the organizations taking part in the annual statewide earthquake drill. the great california shakeout. it stopped all of its trains for one minute at 10:21 a.m. and nearly 8 million people took part in last year's shakeout. organizers expected about 8.2 million among business, schools and city officers were instructed to drop to the ground, take cove under a sturdy table and hold on for 60 seconds. at this hour, a stretch of highway 101 in the north bay is shut down after a big rig and a

tanker truck collided. the highway patrol has closed all northbound lanes of the freeway between railroad avenue and erona park expressway. the tanker was carrying 4200 gallons of fuel and some of that fuel is now leaking on to the roadway. hazardous material team is working to contain the spill. there is no estimate as to when that highway will reopen. no one was hurt in the crash. >> a big accidents turned into a big mess in vacaville. the driver of a truck carrying thousands of live chicken swerved and slammed into a parked big rig along interstate 80 in vacaville at 2:00 this morning. the chp suspects the driver of the chicken truck was asleep at the wheel. the driver of the parked big rig was standing next to his vehicle at the time of the crash. >> so i heard the impact.

that's all. i didn't didn't saw him. the on thing that i saw him was a lot of chicken flying all over the interstate, you know. so that was crazy. >> the only people hurt were an elderly couple who drove their suv into a ditch. they were trying to avoid the mess on the road. they suffered minor injuries. it took chp five and a half hours to cleert chicken and the debris. the coast guard is catching heat for clearing a boat stuck in the sand. the owner is a commercial fisherman who does not have insurance. he says that the coast guard could have easily pulled his 48- foot boat to safety but he claims that the boat is now heavily damaged and so is his system. the coast guard says it is responsible for rescue operation but not commercial salvaging. a gang of masked men rob a liquor store. it's all caught on tape.

the firestorm on the east hill. officials held what they are calling a memorial of beauty and hope. mayor gene kwan along with officials gathered near the caldecott tunnel. the mayor note that had oakland has been resilient in the face of disaster. >> lot of people were not sure if this part oakland would recover. it has. this is a resilient city. we had fires, earthquakes. we keep coming back. >> 25 people died and more than 33,000 homes were destroyed when the fire raced through the oakland hills on this day in 1991. some frightening moments were caught in a convenience store. four masked men robbed the convenience storm you can see the robber taking liquor and cash from a register as an

employee watches on with his hands raised. police are offering a $1000 reward for the company tour of these robbers. san leandro police say they have made an arrest in a triple homicide earlier this month that left three people dead including a 16-year-old girl. >> we are getting specifics from san leandro police. but they are busy interviewing and processing the man who was arrested earlier on this morning in connection with a recent shooting at a tattoo party. >> investigators believe that he was one of the gunmen who opened fire outside a party in a warehouse more than two weeks ago. three young people were killed in that shooting including 19- year-old shanice keel.

her father found out about the arrest and he was overwhelmed by the news. at this point, it looks like we have justice. at this point, looks like we have found my daughter's killer. i have to say su to the san leandro police department and thank you to all the people that provided tips because, honestly, i didn't think that this case would be solved so quickly. >> along with those three people killed, three other people were injured by gunfire that night. police are not telling us how they tracked counsel the accused shooter who was taken into custody this among but we do know they are still trying find a second shooter. that person still on the loose. a short time ago a captain from the san leandro police came out here to tell us they will be offering more details in the case this afternoon. an oakland police sergeant was put in charge of the case

before a journalist was shot and killed. the report says that sargeant dirwin lang mire watched the investigation from the start and repeatedly over looked the evidence tying the killing to the your black muslim bakery. there are new concerns about the safety of pg&e's natural gas pipelines. acourting to the chronicle, state regulators found-- documents are dated between 194 and 1956. however, it's unclear whether the pipes are still in use. pg&e says that if there is an issue, it will be actressed. next month, state regulators plan to ask a judge to make the documents public. >> a new report shows san francisco might not be such a great place to live if you are a young adult. san francisco was ranked 25th on the daily beat list of the

the new front coming in but thats that backed off of that i'm not surprised. there is so much in the way of low clouds. i mean, that's a big fog bank for this time of the year. for october, i mean, there is not that much heat in the valley. yet, there it is. this morning, before the low clouds came in, these were some of the lows. the chilly morning. sonoma at 47. fairfax was 48. catalina, woot side checking in at 49 degrees. still a lot of very stubborn low clouds. cool tomorrow. mostly sunny afternoon. there is some warm air aloft and inland areas will come up a little bit. the warm air will arrive by the weekend. today a very similar day to yet. we can't find a 70 until i hit fairfield. only 56 in santa rosa and 5 in san francisco. not something that we see very often. 64 from redwood city to mountain view and also san jose and livermore.

and even oakland at 59. so very cool and there is why. you can see the overcast conditions are just -- they are just holding on. there is a weak front coming in to the north, giving some light drizzle, light rain. there is one more that has to go by there. then the high pressure system will build in. that will be just a an old positioned upper level. fog still holding on. some sun, little breeze will kick in once that fog burns off and the wind picks autopsy little bit. a little warmer if you have the sun, if not. that's going to stay cool. 60s and 70s low clouds don't want to burn off. still temperatures very close to yesterday's readings if not cooler. 70s in the peninsula, 60s or 51s. a little bit warmer friday, more so on the weekend sunday

new session highs. there has been a mix of news today including some relatively good news about unemployment benefits. we'll have more on that in a moment. but still some concern over european debt crisis. the dow is up 23. the max dark is down 7. technology still having a tough time. s&p is up 4. greek lawmakers officially pass add deeply resented austerity bill that led to violent protests on the streets of athens. and those protests came at a high price today when a protester was killed as thousands of greeks faced off against police. this began as a large rally in downtown athens but turned ugly when masked protesters with firefightbombs turned on peaceful communist party supporters. the new measure include pay and tax cuts on civil service as well as pension cuts and tax hikes for all greeks. back here in the u.s., the

number of people collecting unemployment benefits is down slightly in the last week. 403,000 people filed initial claims for jobless benefits. that's down 6000 from the week before and down almost 20,000 from a month ago but that number would have to be less than 375,000 to indicate a healthy job creation rate. the number of continuing claims also slip by 7500 to 3.72 million. the world's largest social network is teaming up with the labor department to help people find jobs. facebook has creating a job network on its site. facebook will also study how job seekers and recruiters use social media. the company plans to develop a way in which people can receive free job postings through facebook. the championship rein of the giants is coming to an end but the bay area is still playing a big part in the world series. >> that is into right.
