afterward. >> i felt it. the signs started shaking back and forth. it was terrifying. it sound like a truck crashed into the building. >> they dived under the desk and they started screaming. it was so scary. >> reporter: the manager showed us a few of the items that fell off their shelves. it looks like that was the worst of the damage. the jolt was the largest the manager tells me she's personally felt in the last 17 years since she's moved to the bay area. we touched base with several other businesses. i spoke with an employee of pegasus books right after the quake. employees were worried for a minute if they would hold up. >> what did you feel? >> we were in the check out line at berkley bowl and heard

a great big thump and a shake. i knew everybody was looking up to i see if anything was coming down. >> i thought it was a car accident. it wasn't much. i'm like, who's shaking this car? wait a minute, i'm in the bay area. >> reporter: surprisingly enough, we did speak to one man who did not feel a thing. his friends tell he was on his cell phone. reporting live in berkley. workers at memorial stadium felt the earthquake, but it doesn't appear there was any damage. i'll show you a live picture of the stadium i.'s undergoing a project. just about 40 minutes ago we talked with palm mead. right now they're about 200-300 workers a t the site and the project is about 50% complete and still on schedule to be

done before the start of the next cal football season. >> in the first few minute after the earthquake, we got 40 calls from people who felt it. we're live in the weather center to show us who felt what where. >> this quake produced wide- spread shaking. first we'll identify the fault. you can see the san andres, and this happened on the hayward fault. it had a depth of 6 miles. as we look at the shake map, people log on to the website to report what they felt. this was produced by over 12,000 responses. the areas in greenerying up with moderate shaking. probably felt a little bit strong in a few places. we have a link to the website where you can report what you

we continue our coverage on our website. go to ktvu.com and click on the tab. you'll find video, slide shows, and updated information. a security guard who police say was unhappy with his job is behind bars for going on a shooting spree in the east bay. we're live to tell you how investigators tracked him down. >> reporter: we just spoke with those investigators and they tell us the 50-year-old suspect has just been transferred to the custody of the jail. the suspect is now in police custody, accused of first shooting at his neighbor's house and then shooting at his co-workers at a security guard job in richmond. this all started about 9:30 last night. >> i was actually on the phone

with 911. we heard a is educational background round of shots, probably about another 10-15. and then as i'm on the phone with the dispatcher, i saw this red toyota truck drive straight past our house, headlights off, going real fast. >> reporter: the bullets narrowly missed a 9-year-old child who was in the house at the time. police say when he arrived, long argued with and ultimately shot his supervisor. police say long took off, they got a tip he was headed to el dorado county. >> they located the vehicle, a short pursuit ensued, and he was taken into custody without incident. >> yeah, they need to do better screening. even though we live in low- income housing, we still need

to be protected. >> reporter: long would right notes to them if he felt they weren't keeping up with their yards. police tell us long had to be treated for a dog bite wound at the scene of the arrest. he had to be transferred back to the county. he's being charged with attempted murder. live in richmond for ktvu 2 news. earlier this month, he killed three people including a teenage girl. he is accused of opening fire as people were leaving a tattoo party back on october 2nd. a 23-year-old man was killed as was a 19-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl. >> it looks like we have justice at this point. at this point it looks like we've found my daughter's

killer. i just have to say thank you to the police department and all the people that provided tips because honestly i didn't think this case would be solved so quickly. >> police have not released the suspects identity or the motive for the shootings. police turned up at the new site of the occupy oakland protest. a secondary camp was set up at snow park because of overcrowding and tension at the primary site right in front of city hall. officers say they received a call before 5:00 a.m. of a possible medical emergency but they didn't find one when they walked through the park. that demonstration has been going on for 10 days now. it's one of several occupy protests all over the country

and the world. bay area nurses have set up a first aid station for all those occupy sf. it plans similar stations in destroy, new york city, and washington, d.c. nurses have a common interest with these occupy protesters. >> it's important for the nurses to come out and support this movement. we all have to stand united for the greater good of america. >> national nurses united has called for universal health care and other public social services funded by a tax on wall street transactions. unemployment went down slightly last year. 403,000 people signed up for new unemployment benefits. that's 600 0 fewer than the week before. the labor department is teaming up with facebook to help people find jobs.

we have just learned from the highway patrol that one lane is still closed in the northbound direction of highway 101. haz-mat are still cleaning up the highway. that leaked fuel on to the roadway. the chp expects the northbound lane will be closed for at least another 5 hours. and because that area is only a two-lane highway, you can expect traffic delays in the area. newly revealed documents show that pge might have installed junk transmission pipes. their data between 1948 and 1956. it's unclear whether the pipes are still in use. if there is an issue, it will be addressed. pge crews shut off a gas line this afternoon that had been leaking for about an hour

and a half. a construction crew ruptures the 4-inch main about 11:30 this morning. they had the pipe pinched off by 10 after 1:00. it appears the line was going to a business still under construction. no customers were without gas during the time of the leak. a new division providing a safe space for victims. we're live in the city to take us inside the department's new special victims unit. >> reporter: the phrase svu may be familiar to fans of the series. but it's new to the san francisco police department. it opened a new division here on the 5th floor of the hall of justice. unveiled the department's special victims unit. >> where we consolidate the domestic violence, juvenile,

human trafficking, elder abuse and neglect, financial abuse and sex crimes into one unit. >> reporter: the units are being united in one office at san francisco's hall of justice. other major cities have had such units for several years. the goal is to expedite justice. >> we're cross training them. it may start out as domestic violence and turn out to be a sex crime. there might be child abuse involved in it as well. >> reporter: for victims -- particularly women, children, and the elderly, it's a place to get help. >> a lot of people don't report because of fear. this is definitely a safe space for them to come and talk to someone that can let them know what really happens. >> reporter: the office

livermore starting out in the lower 50s. weather pattern didn't change too much for today. the patchy fog will resurface for together tonight. a little warmer for your friday. high pressure rebuilds, that will set up a weak northerly flow. temperatures will continue to warm up as we head into saturday. the warmest locations will be approaching the low 80s and the same deal as we head into monday. with those offshore winds, they'll be strengthening next week and fire danger will be on the increase especially for monday night, tuesday, and wednesday. we could have a fire weather watch kick this for that time frame. the fog out there right around 7:00 for san francisco, oakland, into the afternoon

a commercial fisherman is criticizing the coast guard for leaving his capsized boat along the shore. this boat got stuck in the sand last thursday. the boat's owner doesn't have insurance and says the coast guard could have easily pulled his 48-foot boat to safety. he says the boat is damaged and so is his business. the coast guard says it's responsible for rescue operations but not commercial salvaging. the first real test, the this could be a good one. >> of course we've been talking about the 49ers and raiders, but not to forget the cardinal football program. matter of fact, they have the longestest win streak in the country right now and they are
