good morning. thank you for waking up with us on this friday october 21st. i'm pam cook. >> and i'm kraig debro. it will be sunny and warmer out there today. temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80s, 60s by the coast. here's sal. traffic is moving well. it continues to look good all the way to downtown oakland. the morning commute looks good if you're driving in downtown san francisco. 6:01, let's go back to the desk. parents should expect extra police patrols around schools today. tara moriarty tells us from concord high school, it's all in response to a new campus

threat. >> reporter: we got off the phone with concord police a while ago and they tell us that the school district will be handling all calls on this matter. classes will not be starting until 8:00 this morning and police have pumped up their presence this morning. we notice patrols in and around the school on the street. there was a warning message issued by phone to parents. >> rest assured your child's safety is our top priority. we will have extra administrators for extra support. now, the school district jumped into action after somebody received a fax, actually, claiming that somebody would be opening fire at 10:00 this morning at campus, a concord police, again, having extra officers on hand this morning as well as at eldorado middle school and the elementary school located close by. now, classes are not canceled. classes are in session.

police are asking you to report anything out of the ordinary. this comes a week after a teacher found an empty gun case. other departments have been notified of the threat, including pleasant hill and walnut creek police, as well as the sheriff's office. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu news. protesters in oakland may have spent their last night camped outside city hall. we're joined claudia. >> reporter: we're keeping an eye on the situation out here at the occupy oakland protest. let's give you a look at the camp as it stands right now. tents up, signs up. the question is will it stay this way? the city of oakland did send out a notice last night, letting them know that the tents would have to come down and the signs would are to come

down. however, there's been no move by police to enforce that. the notice says that they can stay here during the day between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. so daytime assembly, that's allowed. let's show you some pictures we took earlier this morning. certainly once this notice came n the protesters were put on notice. they were around standing on lookout on all the corners, making sure that if anything happened, they were able to alert people on the camp site. >> we're going to stay. if we don't stay here and protect each other, who will protect us? the people we hire to do it are not doing their job, baby. >> it seems organized around here. radios, everybody is watching. >> just like the government has, we have our own. we have our own general assembly, government, security. there's no reason for the government to intervene here. >> back live out here at the

earthquake. >> no major damage was reported and the quakes hit on the same day millions of people took part in that annual great california shakeout, which is a statewide earthquake safety drill. now, we have more information and coverage on yesterday's earthquakes along with our survival guide on ktvu.com. today japan's cabinet approved a billion dollars budget to help reconstruction following the earthquake and tsunami there. budget bills still need to be approved by the japanese parliament. the earthquake and tsunami devastated the coast. it's said to be the most expensive natural disaster in history. new this morning, plans to bury moammar gadhafi have been delayed until the circumstances of his death can be examined.

while libyans continue to celebrate the death, the human rights office has called for an investigation in how he was killed. why some people are questioning the libyan government's explanation. a paired down version of president obama's jobs bill failed in the senate late last night. the measure was to boost hiring of firefighters and teachers. it failed, short of the 60 votes needed to bring the proposal up for debate. it's the second time in two weeks the senate has killed the president's jobs bill plan. authorities are looking for the five men that are responsible for a hate crime outside a taco restaurant on mission and 19th. the group attacked three men and one used a homophobic expression. the victim suffered a broken jaw and must now undergo surgery. the other two victims suffered

my your injuries. time now is 6:07. >> speed it along. you just panicked a few people watching. >> sal is here with more traffic. good morning, kraig and pam. traffic is moving along well. it's getting more crowded. i don't think your window of opportunity is going to last that much longer to be completely free of stop and go traffic. will have we have some in antioch. it's not surprising to those who commute there every day. let's take a look at interstate 880, southbound in front of the coliseum. that traffic is moving well in both directions there. the drive at the toll plaza, already in some of those lanes we're getting a backup. the lanes are clear. a very happy friday, everybody. yes, we made it. get you pointed in the right direction. what looks to be a sunny weekend, we do have cool lows and also some fog.

more fog than low clouds compared to yesterday. the morning fog gives way to warmer weather. it's going right down the coast. cool lows around sunny warmer afternoon highs. the questions, will we get an offshore event? looks like a slight one. i'm not surprised this one has backed off because there's not a consensus on it. the consensus is it's cool in the bay. there's a lot of fog also coming down on the deck. yesterday it was up a little higher. mill valley at 47. lafayette at 99. system yesterday enhanced the fog. that's gone now. so now we get the north wind behind that. high pressure is building. you see the fog going right down the coast. it will get warmer sooner today. 49 napa and san rafael.

59 in livermore and the city at 53. chill in the air for san francisco. we will go a little warmer today. 53, 64, and a high of 68 degrees. the wind is tailing off. east, southeast. the temperatures will come up today, but, again, little brisk out there this morning. layer activity today. by noon we should be mostly sunny, i think, and the day will be warmer, especially as we go into the weekend, chilly morning, but more sunshine today. the fog will not hold on as long as it did yesterday. for some, the north bay, it was a long process to burn it off. 60s to upper 70s. the weekend does look warmer and next week, sunny, warm, even a little warmer. very different weather in chicago. it's living up to its windy city fame. take a look at that.

if you didn't see pictures from yesterday, high winds churned up huge waves on lake michigan. winds reaching 50 miles per hour on the leak. some waves reaching 25 feet. at least seven boats in a harbor on the lake were destroyed, 20 others damaged, the high winds also snapped light poles, and i saw pictures of some of the windows in the downtown area busted out. it's amazing. >> wow. >> well, rain and wind, mild and dry, the new prediction for the bay area's winter forecast. dozens of west muslims who took time off to pray are being fired. we're going to remind you we have a facebook page. you can send us messages and story ideas. search ktvu channel 2 morning news team.

welcome back to the morning news. it's now 6:13 and hertz is firing 25 muslims out of its seattle airport facility. the rental car agency says it's not a case of religious discrimination. hertz says all of those workers and nine others were suspended last month after it was discovered they were not clocking out for a break when they prayed. the agency says some workers were taking longer than the allowed ten minutes, so it required all workers to punch out and back in when on break. the others refused to sign an

agreement saying they would clock out. this morning we're finding out about the burial of moammar gadhafi. it's being delayed until the death can be investigated by the criminal court. as reported by the washington, dc newsroom, questions are being raised about how gadhafi died. carol? >> reporter: it's that video of gadhafi's last moments which i we're not showing you because it's so gruesome that it's raised questions about what happened. was he shot in a firing fight after his convoy was hit by nato air strikes or as shaky cell phone video knows, was he taken alive and executed by his captors. it's something that must be investigated. in the meantime, nato's governing body meets today to determine how to end the air strike in libya.

and warm coat handy this winter. a new forecast, the bay area can expect cold wet weather. it's due to la nina, which affects water temperatures in the ocean. while northern california is expected to get more rain and snow, the opposite is true for southern california. two men accused of stealing from a stranded fishing boat are due in court today. the 48-foot boat ran aground last week. will owner cannot afford to have it towed, and he's upset that the ghost -- coast guard refused to help. then men were removing items from the both and they claimed to be friends of the owner, but the guard got suspicious and called authorities. bob peterson can be seen walking and waving his american flag. it's been seven years since he

was last out there. following 9/11 you could see him but he stopped after moving away. now that he's back, he plans to be out there every day for the next year. all right. welcome back. 6:17 is the time. sal, welcome back. how's traffic? >> traffic is doing well, pam. kraig, we're getting more of a crowd as it's the middle part of the commute. the bay bridge, it's not a huge crowd, but there will a slowing to the toll plaza. we're looking at interstate 880. the traffic looks good in both directions. traffic looks good all the way to downtown oakland. we're getting slow traffic on highway 4 through the antioch region. it looks good. by the time you reach bay point, it's clear. at 6:18, let's go to steve. a very happy friday.

we have some fog. it's really cool. upper 40s on the peninsula and east bay. and then mid-40s, you can see what, that fog zipping down the coast. low 50s now. livermore is in there. redwood city at 52. 54 at fairfield and there's not much of a freeze. that system that came by yesterday, that enhanced it. that's gone by, so the high builds in behind that and sends everything to the north. we get a little north breeze. warm after a cool chilly morning. upper 70s to nearly 80 degrees inland. you're saying warm that up. the fog deck is low. i don't think there will be too much and it won't last long. another warmup is expected tuesday and wednesday. a new report says most americans are not finding ways to reduce their driving costs.

they will spend $490 billion on gas by the end of this year. that's up $100 billion from last year. also it says many people can't buy a more fuel efficient car, move closer to work, or find a job closer to home because of the economy, and then the economy is not likely to improve as consumers cut spending on other places to afford the gas. barnes & noble is expanding its marketplace. they plan to add more than 1 million new products across several categories, including electronics, toys, games, baby items. barnes & noble executives want to give them a one stop shopping executive. that can put them in competition with amazon and ebay. cirque du soleil is back in son. crews arrived a few days ago. they brought with them 65

good morning. there's a new crash. it sounds pretty serious. two big rigs and traffic is backing up into the livermore valley. if you drive on the 580 headed to pleasantton, this will affect you. let's go back to the desk. we want to show you some incredible video from australia a. mother was shopping with her baby when a speeding car came barreling through a wall in sid any. that's the stroller you saw. the car actually hit the stroller with the 17-month-old baby boy inside. miraculously, no one was hurt. police are now trying to

determine what led up to that crash. also in australia, riot police were brought in to break up an occupy wall street protest. about 100 people in melbourne defied an order to vacate a city square where they had camped out for a week. protesters were loaded into a police van, but it's not known if anyone was hurt. nba owners have a lot to talk about, but they're no longer talking to the players. the bargaining agreement discussion broke off yesterday. no new talk as scheduled. meanwhile, oracle arena officials are in a holding pattern on how to make use of the warriors home court and what to do about game day employees. >> we can't make your decisions until we know what the nba is going to do. so really we don't have an answer at that point. >> all games through november 14 november 14th have been canceled. many more are in jeopardy.

sides are far apart on players salary cap. a trade may have saved a profootball player's life. jerome harrison has a brain tumor and doctors discovered the thankcovered the tumor when he was traded to the eagles. now doctors say he has a good chance to recover because of that early test. >> overnight the european union launched the first two satellites of its galileo system. it's built as the rival to gps. they say galileo is more precise and more reliable. the russian rocket carrying the satellites was supposed to be launched yesterday but was postponed. the pentagon announced it's interested in recycling dead satellites. nasa says there are least 100 satellites that are no longer

seismically retrofitted. it's expected to be elevated by crews late -- elevated by used later today today. both quakes we are centered in berkeley. no reports of major damage, but people reported feeling feeling either a jolt or rumbling as far as gilroy. >> we were under the balcony. i immediately looked up and wondered if it was going to collapse on us. >> now, you right remember from school the stop, drop, and hold on drill. that was happening across the state. 8million people participated in an earthquake preparedness day.

brain. letters were sent home to parents parents saying it could cause brain damage. >> i wouldn't do it because it looks really stupid. you're out cold on the ground at school a teacher could see you. it just doesn't seem good to me. >> the game is not limited to the school. the cdc reports that from 1995 through 2007 at least 82 children have died from the activity. many have done it alone. >> pg&e crews will inspect more than 16,000 transformers statewide over concerns that prior inspections were not performed. the mercury news reports that pg&e fired workers when it was learned they did not carry outing ins as claimed. the areas that need to be rechecked are in santa clara county. the race to become the next -- mayor is heating up.

what parents were told they would do to improve the schools. secretary of state hillary clinton is in pakistan in morning. that's where she reaffirmed the u.s.'s commitment to fighting terrorism. >> i want very much for the people of pakistan to understand that we believe we're in this fight with you, and we want to do whatever we can to try to end the violence. >> clinton met with both the pakistan any president and foreign minister this morning. she's trying to get the country to crack down on militants belonging to al-qaeda. leo panetta leaves today. his first stop, discussions with defense ministers from south asia. they're expected to discuss relationships with china which is not a member of the group.

the low clouds. watch it go down the coast. see it there, that was not the case. it was going west to east yesterday. it was like, okay, it's still here, and by noon it was still there. if you had the sun, it wasn't bad. it warmed up a little bit. really cool lows. like you just saw. napa, 49, san rafael, 49. i did see 51 in livermore and now it says 52. city is at 53. so speaking of san francisco, we'll start off at 53, go to 64 and then a high of 68. it will be sunny today. the sea breeze has been cut in half. only southwest at 9. high pressure is building in, sending the jet stream to the north. there's no sign of any rain for the next seven to ten days. it will be warmer today, but it's a cool start. some of that may reduce visibility and a rather brisk start for some. after that, we'll see sunshine and warmer days as we head into the weekend. there will be a lot more sun

a 4.0 quake hit berkeley and then a 3.8 after shock. moammar gadhafi's burial has been delayed. the leaders will not be buried until an investigation has been completed into how he died. occupy oakland protesters put on notice. the city says no more tents or overnight camping. protesters are not budging just yet. >> they expect there to be some civil force to enforce these rules that there can be no tents, no signs up. as you can see right now, things stayed the same. things are at its status quo, even though that letter was delivered last night. however, protesters are clearly on alert. they've been out here all night and into the morning, a big change from yesterday morning. we saw people walking around very early this morning.

people say this is their own little city with its own government and kitchen. they say they expect police to make a move at some point, they're also promising to hold their ground. >> go back to the '60s when we saw young people of color coming out into the street to be shot down with fire hoses. every day they came back, and they came back, and they came back. it was an important message to america that we need to do something about civil rights. we're hoping we can do something about economic rights in this country. okay. taking a live look back here at the occupy oakland protest. take a look at that man in the blanket, there are several men walking around just like him. those are the lookouts, the people standing around the perimeter of this camp of this protest to make sure that if anything happens, everyone gets alerted. in the meantime, they're looking towards what they have

planned. there's a wedding planned today that they've all been invited to. there's a rally planned for tomorrow. you see the sign out front that says 11/5/11. that's the day people are asking them to take their money out of banks and put them into a credit union. that's one step of the a movement that's ongoing. ktvu channel 2 news. >> if you spent much time talking on your cell phone you, may have wondered if you're increasing your risk of cancer. there's no reason to worry. they found no link between cell phone use and developing cancer. the study followed 350,000 people for ten years and found that users have the same cancer rates as those who don't have -- at all. stores were going to be required to post signs about cell phone radiation, but that has been put on hold.

it was suppose -- supposed to go into effect next tuesday, but a ruling is expected later this month. the conrad murray trial, testimony of a key witness, dr. sheen schaefer is an expert on the powerful anesthetic propofol. yesterday he shot down the defense's theory that michael jackson swallowed a lethal dose of propofol. he said it's also unlikely that he injected himself with the drug. d. conrad murray has pled not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges. joseph nato will ask a judge to remove the shackles he's been ordered to wear during his court hearing. he will be asking to use his cell phone in jail while he prepares for his defense. he's representing himself in court. he's accused of killing four woman in crimes dating back to

the 9170s. schools took center stage last night in the race for the next mayor. it was hosted by the united educators of san francisco. parents in the crowd told our crew that they wanted to hear talk about what the mayor's office could do to improve schools. they drew upon their background in explaining how important schools are. >> other candidates discussed making the city more affordable to teachers, having businesses to support the schools and matching curriculum to the city's job climate. the election is on november 8 november 8th. bay area hikers and cyclists have a new area to explore. the new trail opens tomorrow. it's just east near the sierra

preserve. it brings the total to 337 miles. state park bonds and a parcel tax helped pay for that new section. 6:48, let's go over to sal. he's going to be talking 237 in the south bay, 880 in the east bay. have you been seeing my notes again. >> i may have seen some numbers there. >> we're all a team. we're going to start off in the south bay. it's a good indicator of what it's like to get into the valley. once 237 gets slow, you know all the other freeways freeways are slow. 880 is slow. the good thing is we don't have a lot of crashes. we don't have unusual occurrences which is really what people hate when you get on the road and you find a slowdown that you don't expect. this is typical. north and southbound 880 looks good. past the home of the oakland raiders. they play this weekend, by the

way, against the kansas city chiefs. let's look at the westbound bay bridge. that's looking good. and any niece is just beside herself with excitement. >> good. she's going to see carson palmer. >> i'm a big carson palmer fan. well, we've got patchy fog. yesterday was just thick, thick, thick. it burned off in parts of the bay area and other parts you were like, what's the deal. it stayed there. that's not the case today. it's cool in parts of the bay and other areas as well. that's not the case today. morning fog, cool and sunny and warm. cool lows over the weekend and a lot of sunshine. next week, no rain. it will be sunny. the next hint of any rain the first week of november, nothing next week. the question is will we get the offshore event. a little cooler monday and warmer tuesday and wednesday. i think we'll get a little bit

of an offshore wind. looks like, yes, it will be warm, it will be dry, but it will just be in the 80s or upper 80s. today we're seeing that fog go right down the coast. that did not happen yesterday. 40s for santa rosa, napa and san rafael. i know montgomery village was down to 43. so was kenwood and san helena. redwood city, 52, concord at 55. when that system went by yesterday, high pressure comes behind it and gives uh the north breeze and that takes care of the fog. there's a little chill to the morning air. temperatures will warm up. 60s, 70s, upper 70s and a few 80-degree temperatures. we'll just take that right into your weekend. cool lows give way to sunshine and warmer afternoon highs. a little cool down and then a warmup on tuesday. >> sounds good.
