good morning. welcome to ktvu mornings on 2. it's saturday, october 22nd. it is time to check in with meteorologist rosemary across co for a look at our very nice weekend forecast. >> good morning to you! we do have a nice pattern shaping up for your weekend. temperatures warmed yesterday, they'll warm over yesterday. take a look at what we're expecting for today. some areas, widespread 70s, low mid-80s for inland areas. even along the coastline, mostly sunny skies, and temperatures will be warming there. this morning we're waking up cooler, also with a little bit of patchy fog. we'll look outside your door this morning and we'll run you through your afternoon coming up. >> topping our news in overnight news, did you feel them? more aftershocks rattled the east bay. three earthquakes hit near berkeley after midnight. a magnitude 2.8 quake, a 1.3, and a magnitude 2.5 aftershock

at 12:45. the quakes happened near the cal campus in the same general area as thursday's 4.0 and 3.8 earthquakes and resulting aftershocks. seismologists say it's fairly common nor the hayward fault to experience back-to-back quakes. >> we've seen this happen before. particularly in 2006, 2007, there was a series of magnitude 3 1/2 to 4 earthquakes on the hayward fault, within a matter of days as well. >> seismologists say the hayward fault is one of the most active in the bay area. the usgs predicts a 62% chance of a 6.7 or larger earthquake in our region in the next 30 years. protestors remain at oakland this morning despite an order from officials to get out. ali? >> reporter: one of things the protestors are preparing for later today is a rally and march they've organized. they have signs posted up

advertising an 11 a.m. rally, a 12 noon march that leads from the plaza to lake merritt. meantime, 2 to 300 people with the occupy oakland demonstration that set up camp here 11 days ago remain here despite city orders to leave the plaza and eviction notice served last night. >> we feel we can no longer assure public safety. we've had incidents of threats, violence, protestors themselves have blocked the police from coming in and providing response, and blocked our public safety personnel from providing an adequate response to injured people. >> one of people in charge of security here at this campsite says the group has no plans to remove their tents or to leave the plaza. and despite the eviction notice, the city says it has no deadline to enforce that eviction notice, no deadline for the protestors to leave. when asked what steps the city

will take next, to enforce that eviction notice, the city administrator spoke and said she would not comment on the city's next steps. in the meantime, we've been told we're not allowed to go inside the encampment area. we have to stay outside the perimeter here. so we've asked that security representative out here if we could talk to their designated media spokesperson. he said he will be working on that for us so we're trying talk to someone with the encampment, occupy oakland demonstration, to ask them their response to the city's eviction notice served last night. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. more people were arrested this morning at the occupy protests in san jose. the movement tweeted that two deem elevators were taken into custody and one was released soon afterwards. this is the second round of arrests outside city hall. late thursday night and friday morning, 8 people were arrested. demonstrators say they will not be deterred. >> we got it pretty hard, about three-quarters of our stuff was

taken. and i'm still out here, not going anywhere. >> so demonstrateddors paid a $500 bail and return to the camp a few hours after getting arrested on misdemeanor charges. city officials are concerned about vandalism and public health and don't want protestors to camp overnight. occupy san francisco protestors plan a rally this afternoon at the federal reserve bang on market street. demonstrateddors companying there for the past two weeks and this solidarity march coincides with the national anti-police brutality day. this is video shot by a protestor who says it shows police using excessive force. but officers say they have followed department guidelines while maintaining order. more than 200 occupy protestors took parted in a demonstration last night in cleveland. at least a dozen people were arrested. authorities say they broke curfew laws, and the city is preparing to hold holiday

when she was hit by another car. that accident created a chain reaction that soon involved at least six cars. >> we have a lot of different vehicles here and debris and things like that, so the first things first, investigate the collision, find out exactly what happened. >> investigators say eight other people were injured, six were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. lanes were closed in both directions near the highway 92 interchange and reopened just before 5 a.m. police are looking for a gunman in a double shooting in san francisco last night in the tenderloin district. when officers arrived they found a woman suffering from a single gunshot wound. a male victim was shot several times. investigators believe he was the intended target while the woman was hit by a stray bullet. both victims are in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police have made who arrests but are looking to see if the shootings were caught on

surveillance video. the man wanted in connection with last weekend's deadly shooting at a hell's angels funeral is on the run. san jose police confirm 38-year- old steve are you says alive. police thought he was killed by other members of the hell's angels he is accused of killing a man last saturday in a fight. as people remember the 1991 east bay hill firestorm, residents there are warned to prepare for the next major disaster. thursday was the 20th anniversary of the fire which killed 25 people and destroyed more than 3800 homes. oakland's fire chief says there's a critical to do list for people to get ready for the next big fire or earthquake. it includes an emergency supply of food and water, access to a radio and emergency escape plan. a memorial is held at gateway emergency center at tunnel road and caldecott lane in oakland, starting at 10:30.

for security. more than 4400 americans have been killed since the war began in march of 2003. some military families tell us the almost nine years of war comes at a very heavy price. this is iraq war veteran matthew carheart, shocked to hear americans were leaving iraq. he says the timing has to be right or we would have lost so many soldiers for nothing. her mother disagrees. for her the end can't come soon enough. >> i'm angry of how it's affected my sons now, he's got permanent problems that's going to affect his whole life. >> moms say the president's announce and is bittersweet for families who paid the ultimate price. others say withdrawing troops does not mean they're out of harm's way. they will still need to deal with the emotional impact of war. in our economy watch this morning, despite dropping last month, california's unprompt rate remains the second highest in the nation behind only

nevada. in september, california's employment development department put the jobless rate at 11.9%. that's down from 12.1% in august. in part because almost 12,000 new jobs were created last month. right now the nation's unemployment rate is 9.1%. here in the bay area, unemployment is highest in solano, alameda and contra costa counties, all above 10%. officials at employment agencies says it depends on whether jobs are available. >> a lot of it because of the industries. so the east bay market is construction, home building, those markets. and those markets are still really heavily hit. >> there's some good news for job seekers. companies are starting to hire more workers for the holidays that. could provide at least temporary relief. the unemployed now have a reason to cheer in missouri. a big announcement by ford. yesterday the company said it plans to invest $1.1 billion in the city's assembly plant. that it also plans to hire 1600 workers over the next four years.

the plant will be used to build parts for the full size commercial van. >> there was a real risk that it could be left in the dust of american manufacturing. instead it will be buffed up, made new, it's a wonderful example of how if we stay focused and work together, we can move this economy forward. >> ford is invested is $700 million more than it had originally planned. the company says the money is coming from a new labor agreement and tax incentives from the state of missouri. groupon is set to go public in two weeks. the company is scaling back but hopes to raise $620 million. shares are to be priced at 16 that $18 when the offering takes place on november 4th. chicago company already rejected a takeover bid by mountain view based google. groupon had 21 million subscribers just about one year ago but as of today that number has skyrocketed to 1 free

the second woman of a shark attack off australia in less than two weeks. the man was underwater earlier today when someone on the dive boat saw a large amount of bubbles. the diver surfaced with fatal injuries. police say he was a 32-year-old american man living in australia on a work visa. his identity not yet released. this makes two fatal shark attacks in the last 12 days. rescue workers in auburn called yesterday after this -- became tangled in a rope swing. they tranquilized the deer to free him. workers also cut off his antlers to protect him from hundreders after his release. he was a bit wobbly but rescue workers say he will be just fine. surveillance video just released of an unusual accident at a wisconsin liquor store. almost 7,000 bottles came crashing down to the ground as shelving ripping away from a wall. for insurance reasons the store couldn't release the video until now. the shelves had been intact for

31 years and they're not sure why they suddenly collapsed. took 25 people the entire day to clean up all that glass and wine. on monday, 13-year-old tyler adams is going to head to new york to compete in a speed texting competition. the teenager from michigan is the youngest of 13 people headed to the big apple to compete. adams says he's can text about 50 to 60 words per minute. the winner of the competition will take away $50,000. >> of course i want to win the $50,000. but at this point, i got a trip to, new york a new phone and i'm going to meet new people. >> all the 13 were given new phones. adams says there will be a variety of challenges, including being blindfolded and unusual symbols. he says he'll focus on accuracy and not speed with the hopes of winning that big cash prize. expect guns on display in the bay area today. the protest planned after the

this morning? welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2. time is 7:29. tensions are high in oakland's plaza. our crews have repeatedly been met with hostility from some protestors in the plaza as we head into day 12. and. big question something, will the city force them out? ktvu's ali rasmus is there monitoring the situation. what can you tell us, ali? >> reporter: the city has plans to force the protestors out. they aren't giving us any details about how they plan to do it or when they plan to do it. the administrator says there's no deadline to enforce the notice to vacate that the city gave the two to 300 people you see here on thursday evening. 36 hours later, they're still here. they have not enforced that notice to vacate. occupy oakland demonstrations are still going on. in that notice to vacate, the city says this encampment posed a public health risk and fire hazard with open kitchens here. after nearly a week and a half,

carry ban. at least 50 people were rifles and shotguns are expected to -- a at bayfair mall this afternoon. earlier this morning the governor signed a law that goes into effect january 1. california prison workers will soon start receiving the first of 26,000 layoff notices. the state's prison agency says prison guards, parole agents and other state workers could lose their jobs by february. as part of the governor's realignment program. serve out sentences in local jails instead of state prisons. the program could mean layoffs to prison workers with at least 10 years of service. the defense has taken over in the case of dr. conrad murray. and it gun by cross-examining the prosecution's star witness. dr. steven schaeffer is said to be the country's leading expert in the drug propofol. it was a lethal dose of that drug that the coroner says killed michael jackson. dr. schaeffer testified that

dr. murray is entirely responsible for jackson's death. yesterday the lead defense attorney tried to show that testimony was based on opinion and not fact. >> how would you characterize your testimony, opinion or isn't it? >> it is -- it is my opinion that that's what happened, that's correct. >> the defense is trying to prove that jackson took the lethal dose of propofol himself, when dr. murray was out of the room. next to take the stand is d. paul white, who is expected to challenge the testimony of dr. schaeffer. new information this morning in the case of a missing 11-month-old baby in missouri. court documents released yesterday show cadaver dogs indicated a positive hit in the girl's home. it was found during a search earlier in the week. lisa irwin was reported missing in the early morning hours of october 4th. her father came home from work and said he found the door unlocked and the lights on. lisa's parents say they had nothing to do where their daughter's disappearance and

police said they have no suspects in the case. pacifica police are working to identify the body of a woman found by two fishermen. police say the woman's partially clothed body was pulled from the surf at manor beach yesterday morning. an autopsy will be perform to determine the cause of death. police say they will release the victim's name as soon as they've notified her next of kin. san francisco prosecutors charging a man with hated crimes after he allegedly attacked a family and their three-year-old child. police say the attack happened wednesday afternoon near the um plaza farmers market. 48-year-old joesa matavao shouted racial slurs at the couple. he is an ex-con convicted of assault, robbery and drug possession. >> he used derogatory terms and assaulted the woman and the men, and actually assaulted the baby as well. >> he allegedly kicked a three-

year-old in the head. he was arraigned yesterday. four counts come with with hate crime allegations. he is held on $50,000 bail. a car wash is held today to benefit 17-year-old ryan buchanan in. july he was digging a sand tunnel at a santa cruz beach when it collapsed, trapping him for at least 15 minutes. lifeguards fran particularly dug him out and administered first aid. he was unconscious when they pulled him out and today he remains in participated coma. the car wash to benefit ryan starts at 10 a.m. and will gallon 2. a public health alert is now issued in berkeley after the discovery of a rabid bat. gary saw the bat on thursday in his backyard. he says it was flying erratically then dove into a bucket. it tested positive for rabies. >> people should avoid any wild animals touching wild animals, educate the children about

occupy protestors across the nation say they remain committed as ever to the movement. demonstrators in los angeles gathered outside 20th century fox studios yesterday. officials are holding their annual share holers there. protestors demanded the resignation of the company founder rupert murdoch. he recently shut down the british tabloid the news of the world after it was caught hacking into the phones of numerous celebrities. and a new york city where the protests gun, demonstrators marched through manhattan yesterday. they teamed with versus employees to picket outside one of the communications company's stores. versus and its workers have been battling over health care costs. residents around the park say they're growing tired of the noise and police barricades controlling the large crowds. representatives of occupy wall street say they have set limits on when and how loud they can chant. show you a live picture from new york, where a

protestor climbed a 70-foot sculpture. he has come down now. friends say he was trying to make a point and police brought a ladder in to negotiate with him. he was demand to go speak with new york mayor michael bloomberg first but he did finally come around or come down around 9 a.m. new york time, and was quickly arrested. and in philadelphia, the left it occupy protestors forced eric cantor to cancel his speech at the university of pennsylvania. his scheduled speech was entitled, a fair shot at the american dream and economic growth. the virginia republican was criticized after calling protestors growing mobs. protestors in chicago petitioning the mayor to let them occupy a city park past curfew. the park's 11 p.m. curfew violates their rights to assemble so they started a drive to get the mayor to lift the curfew so they can okapi the park around the clock.

involved at least six cars. police say eight other people were injured, six taken to the hospital with critical injuries. all lanes were cleared and opened just before 5 a.m. protestors with occupy oakland have a rally and march planned today. ali rasmus is live where the camp remained overnight despite an eviction notice from the city. >> reporter: john, that notice to vacate issued by the city was issued on thursday night, and 36 hours later this campsite of two to 300 people is still here. now that it's morning, you can see it people up and around, they've set up yoga mats here because apparently they have a regularly scheduled 8 a.m. yoga class for the two to 300 people who are living out here. city spokeswoman says there's no deadline for the protestors to leave. so we don't know when the city will actually enforce that notice to vacate they issued thursday night. the city sent health inspectors to the campsite on wednesday. but thursday evening city administrators say the campsite had grown over a week and a half to a level that the city

said present a public health and safety risk. the protestors deny those claims, saying despite that eviction notice, they are not leaving here. we've been told not to walk into this campsite with our cameras. last night when one of our news crews did, they were surrounded by several men and told to leave. we've been told there's a designated spokesman for the occupy oakland demonstration, and that that is the person we're supposed to talk to. however, that person has not come out to meet us for an interview yet this morning. we did talk to two people walking to the demonstration, walking by the demonstration here. and asked what they thought about the city's orders for protestors to leave. >> time to go. why. it's unhealthy. >> inclined to agree with the city? >> by all means. >> right to assemble, a lot the right, and petition the government. okay, that's what people are doing. and -- a movement saying what is going on doesn't mack sense. i mean, the system doesn't mauck sense to a lot of us.

hundreds of people taking parted in the occupy oakland movement stayed in the plaza overnight despite an eviction notice in the city. welcome back to mornings on 2. in about two and a half hours,

protestors are going to begin a rally and march from city hall to lake merritt. ali rasmus is live in the plaza this morning where the occupy camp has been going for 12 days now. what is the situation, ali? >> reporter: the notice for the protestors to vacate was issued by the city on thursday night. and you can see 36 hours later, they are still here. there's an estimated two to 300 people camped out in the plaza as part of the demonstrations. now that it's light out we can get a sense of how many people are up and walking around. we have been told not to walk into this campsite with our cameras. last night when one of our news crews d they were surrounded by several men and told to leave. we've been informed there's a designated spokesman for occupy oakland who is the only person who is supposed to talk to us and represent the group here. howeverring he has not come out to meet us for an interview yet. and again we're not allowed inside so we can't go find him. but on wednesday the city sent

health inspectors in. by thursday evening administrators decided the campsite had grown to a size the city he is presented a public health and safety risk. protestors deny the claims and say despite that notice, they have no plans to leave. we talked to two people walking by the demonstration this morning. we asked what they thought about the city's orders for the protestors to leave. >> time to go. yes, it's unhealthy. >> inclined to agree with the city on this one? >> by all means. >> right to assembling. i thought the right to assemble and petition the government. okay? that's what people are doing. >> that last man said not only is he simp threat to be the protests, he was on his way from san francisco here to join them. this group occupy oakland has a rally and march scheduled at 11:00 this morning here at the plaza. then the protestors say they will go from here and watch

over the lake merritt area here in oakland. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. early this morning, in new york city a protestor scaled a 40-toot art sculpture and threatened to occupy it until mayor bloomberg resigned from office. he spent three hours atop the structure before negotiate or talked him down. meanwhile, occupy protestors marched through lower manhattan yesterday. they teamed up with verizon employees to picket outside one of communications stores. verizon and its workers have battled for months over health care costs. and in philadelphia, the threat of occupy protestors forced leader eric cantor to cancel his speech at the university of pennsylvania. his scheduled speech was titled, a fair shot at the american dream and economic growth. up to a thousand demonstrators were expected to converge on the campus. the virginia republican was criticized this month after calling protestors growing mobs. overnight, one woman was killed after she stopped to help people involved in a minor

car accident. it happened just after 2 a.m. on northbound 880 in hayward. the highway patrol says the woman got out of her car to help people that had collided with another car. she was hit, starting a chain reaction that involved six other vehicles. >> general nature to help one another so we want people to help each other, but on the freeway this time of night, err on the side of caution. >> eight other people were injured, six in the hospital with critical injuries. lanes were closed in both directions while police cleaned. the scene. they reopened just before 5 a.m. police in east palo alto are investigating a double shooting. it happened just before midnight. the victims are said to be a 42- year-old and a 38-year-old both from modesto. they're now in the hospital. the motive for the shooting is unknown and no suspects are in custody. three earthquakes hit near berkeley just after midnight.

a magnitude 2.8 quake, a 1.3, and a magnitude 2.5 at 12:45 this morning. those are all aftershocks from thursday's 4.0 and 3.8 quakes on the hayward fault. and while these tremors may rattle nerves, some local businesses are seeing the benefits. pre-assemble earthquake kits are selling fast at stores like the safety place in dublin. people stocking up on non- perishable food, first aid supplies and water containers that will keep water safe for up to five years. >> you feel the quake, and it scares you. you suddenly decide it's a good time to get prepared. >> it's recommended that you should have enough food and water on hand for at least three days. san francisco prosecutors are charging a man with hate crimes after he attacked a couple and their three-year-old child. police say the attack happened wednesday afternoon near farmer market.

a man shouted racial slurs at the 3-year-old and 21-month-old sons of a mixed race couple. he is an ex-con with previous con sections for assault, robbery and drug possession. >> he was very -- derogatory terms, then assaulted the women, the men, when the men tried to protect the woman, assaulted the baby as well. >> police say he kicked the three-year-old in the head yesterday he was arraigned on three counts of assault and endangering a child and one count of battery. four of the counts come with hate crime allegations. he is held on $500,000 bail. police say city parks are safe after a teenage girl backed down on her claim she was sexually assaulted. on october 14th, the 16-year- old girl told police she was assaulted in the park. she says two men pulled her into a bathroom where the attack occurred. but now she says that assault never happened. police say they will not press charges against her. pacifica police are working to identify the body of a woman found by two fishermen.

police say the woman's body was pulled from the surf at manor beach yesterday morning. an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. police say they will release the vip's name as soon as they've notified her next of kin. a charter bus driver escaped with only minor injuries after crash nothing a tree. he said he los control of the bus at 6:00 last night. the tree was uprooted and split in half. the driver was the only person on the us and. armed gun advocates plan to gather in san leandro today to protest california's new open carry ban. at least 50 people were rifles and shotguns are expected at bayfair mall this afternoon. earlier this month, governor brown signed a law banning people from openly carrying unloaded handguns in public. that law goes into effect on january 1. gun advocates plan to file a lawsuit to get the ban overturned. the city of berkeley has issued a public health alert after the discovery of a rabid battle. gary saw the bat on thursday in

nevada republicans are meeting today to decide if they should once again move the date of their primary caucuses. the state g.o.p. previously announced it would hold the caucuses on january 14th. that angered national g.o.p. leaders and other early primary states like new hampshire. now nevada faces the possibility of boycotts from candidates and the removal of a delegate from next year's convention. if it does not move the caucuses back to february. a decision is expected about 1:00 this afternoon. there's a major shake-up for g.o.p. candidate michele bachmann. a new hampshire television station reports her entire staff in that state has quit. she only had five paid staff members, but they said her lack of commitment to campaigning in new hampshire led them to quit. she has been focused intensely on other early primary states, like iowa, hoping a win there could give her campaign some momentum. republican herman cain is campaigning in michigan this weekend.
