8:00 am
good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's tuesday, october 25th. we have anian date on this still developing -- an update on this still verying story. the police raid shutting down the two "occupy oakland" encampments. we're waiting for the conference to start. this all started around frank ogawa plaza around 4:30 this morning, later moved on to snow park near lake merritt.
8:01 am
watch your screens. you are looking at video of officers in their riot gear removing protesters from snow park near lake merritt for those who refuse to go, they were led away by officers they were in plastic land cuffs. now our live team coverage begins this hour. we have ktvu's allie rasmus where something is -- where something is happening there in downtown oakland. what's happening allie? >> reporter: well, things have been pretty calm for the most part. that's all changed in the last ten minutes. we've seen a couple of hundred police officers return to 14th street and broadway, which is the intersection -- suspect -- intersection. the supporters tried to return to frank ogawa plaza plaza.
8:02 am
as that crowd grew, then police came out. we heard people chanting toward police. we're not sure -- we're hearing a lot of noise. we're not sure what's going on. but we're seeing some of the officers move in towards frank ogawa plaza. this all started at 4:30 this morning. our cameras were there as police moved in on this "occupy oakland" encampment. that was at 4:30 this morning. as many as 400 people were living here. now, around 5:30 this morning, after protesters were kicked out of frank ogawa plaza, they sent out an alert by text for the protesters to meet up at 14th street and jefferson and that's where we saw about 100 protesters there as well. then police closed down that street and started arresting some of the people that were blocking the street there.
8:03 am
earlier this morning, we watched police put up -- put up metal barricades around the plaza. they put those barricades up to keep the supporters and encampment from going back. tents, personal items are scattered around. >> it's still standing. it's not completely down. i mean, i feel like either way, the -- it is -- this isn't gonna kill the movement. >> taking a live look out here, this is 14th and broadway. frank ogawa plaza. you can see the metal barricades that police have put around the perimeter of frank ogawa plaza. they've now moved out closer out onto the sidewalk. there are a group of protesters who weren't arrested and some of their supporters who have gathered on the other side of the barricade out here. but we don't know exactly how many people have been arrested. police are supposed to give us some preliminary arrests
8:04 am
numbers. we do know from messages and text messages and information we've gotten from the occupy oakland people. they are saying as many as 90 people, 90 protesters were arrested this morning. there is a press conference -- press conference, a briefing that's supposed to hoop. let's go to tara moriarty with more on that. >> i would believe that number about 90 protesters because we were at the scene, where a lot of these people were being booked. there were quite a few people, dozens and dozens. we're at 19th and harrison. police are sort of standing guard until city workers are unable to come in and clear out. there's still tents here, sleeping bags. there's tarp, personal i teams strewn all over the place -- items strewn all over the place, bicycles. this is a much different scene from a couple of hours.
8:05 am
>> we demand all of those in snow park to immediately leave. >> reporter: officers stormed snow park at 6:15, clearing out automatic of -- all of the protesters who splintered off the main group. those folks were kicked out at about 4:45 this morning. some left peacefully. others did not. some were arrested and now officers have been sifting through the remnants of the camp here. one officer even found a box of knives and tempers are still flaring. >> 500 homeless people. they are on the lakes on the street. knock it off! >> i'm sad. >> reporter: why? s. >> because i think we were able to create a world where we don't have police and are making things better and it's just sad to see the city come through and destroy it. >> reporter: earlier this morning around 5:30, 6:00, as i mentioned, dozens of protesters were lined up at 14th and clay
8:06 am
to get booked. officers filled out their paperwork. 400 protesters that are here in oakland were part of a worldwide movement. there are more than 1500 being staged across the globe. as you can see, people are headed back to work. officers again standing by here and just waiting for city workers to come in and clear out all of these items. a couple of protesters have come up and said, you know, hey, look, when am guy that get my bike back? when am guy that get this back -- when am i gonna get my back bike? when am i gonna get this back? everything is loaded up. we don't know where they are taking the stuff. back to you. >> thank you, tara. stay here for continuing coverage of the "okay protest." we just found out within the last five minute, the oakland police pushed back their briefing that they will give us. it will be at 9:00 a.m. at 8:30 beale wring you the --

8:09 am
temperatures tomorrow will not be that warm. we'll get the wind, it will be out of the north. it's only gonna be in the 70s. we're not looking for high temperatures. low and high clouds. sunny and breezy but that's a west wind today. tomorrow does look sunny as we get that northerly wind. probably more so in the east bay, the weekend looks nice. cooler but there's no sign of any rain. there really isn't. just a quiet pattern here. everything continues to be -- maybe the first week in november. right now, not much is showing up. there's our system. the low clouds are definitely in place. it's not strong enough to sweep away the low clouds. a lot of 40s. now we're seeing 50s but these are low 50s for many. some of the cloud cover came in and the temperatures went up gonna trap that cool air. there's nothing upstream for us. as that builds in the north, that system will deepen.
8:10 am
that will produce gusts. today, though, after the low clouds, it will be mostly sunny but not very warm. a love -- a lot of 60s, upper 60s. maybe on the high side if some of that low cloud deck doesn't get out of here. friday looks like maybe some patchy fog returns with your weekend all in view. it will be all right. it will be quiet. it won't be raining. it will just be a little cooler. 60s by the coast. 70s around the bay and inland. ten minutes after 8:00. overnight, word came out of libya that the body of moammar gadhafi has been buried. gadhafi's body had been on display for several days along with the bodies of one of his sons and his top aide. now libyan officials say all three were buried in a secret location with a modest islamic ceremony, including prayers over the body. libya's new leaders have promised an investigation into the circumstances of gadhafi

8:27 am
here at frank ogawa plaza. this raid happened at 4:30 this morning. the police went down through the encampment and took down the tents. after that, police made some arrests. some of the protesters went to different locations here in downtown oakland. police arrested them at those different locations as well. when we got here back, things were pretty calm up until about a half-hour ago. we saw some people trying to return back to frank ogawa plaza plaza. presumely people had some stuff in that encampment you can see traffic is still moving here on 14th and broadway. cars are still passing through. but again, just wanted to update you on that development that happened. there was a little bit of a squirmish between police and protesters it appears things have calmed down a little bit out here right now.

barricade, moving some of the protesters and their supporters farther away from frank ogawa plaza. now, in the meantime, traffic is still moving here on 14th and it's kind of a volatile situation. you can hear a lot of people cheering and chanting. you are looking at police. there's probably about a dozen police face to face with these protesters here on the sidewalk of broadway here at 14th street. now, this all started when police went in and broke up the occupy oakland demonstration our cameras were there as police started to take down the tents and arrest people. nearly 400 people were camped there. the past week, the city said the campsite posed a city and public health risk. so they were given notice thursday night that they would be evicted. that evick shin happened early
8:33 am
this morning about four hours ago. after protesters were kicked out of that plaza, they were sent a text to meet up at 14th and jefferson. there were some people sitting in the street. there was a crowd of about 100 people on that intersection before police started arresting them. now, about 15 minutes ago, we had a chance to speak to one of the protesters out here. he says the plan for the "occupy oakland" demonstrators is to meet at 14th and madison at 4:00 for what they are calling an emergency march in drakes -- march in demonstrations -- march and demonstrations. >> there was child care here, there was meals being given to everybody. there was a library. there was general assembly the here every night -- assemblies

7:30, it opened back up again. but then as the protesters returned to frank ogawa plaza, police had to get the metal barricades out. at that point -- so now they've -- it looks like they are preparing to shut off this intersection to traffic once again. off in the distance you are looking at telegraph, telegraph and broadway. i believe police will be closing off that street. if you can avoid the area, that would be a good idea. >> allie, this is sal castanedo. the b.a.r.t. station across the street, earlier they had reopened the b.a.r.t. station. could you know or maybe you can find out after you get off the air whether they are gonna close that b.a.r.t. station again and not people get off? because if you get off at 12th street city center, you are gonna be coming up right there in the middle of all of this.
8:37 am
i'm not sure b.a.r.t. is gonna do all of this. the b.a.r.t. station entrance that's on the south side of 14th and broadway. it appears the metal gates are down there. so no one going into this entrance, this particular entrance at downtown broadway oakland -- broadway, oakland and 14th street, the station for b.a.r.t. >> all right. it looks like you are right in the middle of things right there. we're gonna let you move and get to a good location and find out what exactly is going on. we'll check back with you very shortly. thank you, allie, for your reporting, right in the thick of things right there. it's 8:37.
8:38 am
we'll check back with allie very soon. in the meantime, the city of oakland is taking this swift action to keep the area safe, especially for people who really don't have anything to do with the protests. pam cooke has that part of the story and joins us live from the newsroom. >> good morning. yeah, we've heard from mayor quan on the events but first i want to tell you that i'm looking at the official site of the city of oakland and it does still say that the city of oakland this morning, advising businesses and city employees and downtown workers to stay away until further notice. at we've been reporting that area around frank ogawa plaza blocked off by hundreds of police officers. protest -- protesters. and jean quan says it's time to restore order and allow the public back into that plaza. that's why they initiated the

8:41 am
14th street is blocked. as we turn to the b.a.r.t. station, it doesn't appear that anyone is coming up or going down the tracks there. you can definitely see that 14th and broadway is an area to avoid with your car. we'll let you know, people still milling around. certainly a huge police presence as allie had told you. when protesters tried to retake frank ogawa plaza they were met with resistance from police and there was a little bit of a clash. if you work in this area, you may not -- i'm not sure you -- you might want to go to 19th. let's go to the traffic on 280 northbound. the traffic is pretty slow here getting up to highway 17. very slow commute. this morning at the toll plaza, we're seeing some improvement getting into san francisco, no major problems on the bridge.
