we've had extensive coverage of the situation for the last day and a half and to continue our coverage, lorraine blanco joins us live with more and what is planned for today. >> reporter: well, oakland police are still out here right now making sure no one goes past these barricades and into 5:00. as you can see, there -- and into frank ogawa plaza. as you can see, there are still a few protesters out here. tonight, there will be a whole lot more. a loud and sometimes bloody battle between police and protesters thursday night, today the sounds of cleanup as city crews washed walls and window and get rid of graffiti. there are hundreds of protesters. a few diehards. >> schools are being shut down, services are being cut. and we can spend hundreds of thousands for a police presence

here to crackdown. >> reporter: the cops have been out here all night and morning. you can also spot a lot of gobbers. this woman came all the way from seattle where she joined "occupy" there. she couldn't believe last night, she said, police in riot gear and tear gas. >> it was really something. it didn't need to be like that. i've been there where -- i don't understand why the authorities decided to clamp down quite the way they did. >> reporter: but another visitor from texas is disgusted by the movement. >> how far do you get them go before you make a decy to do that -- make a decision to do that? >> no, i watched them do that, deploy the tear gas. if they didn't do that, it would have gotten out of hand pretty quick. >> reporter: the protesters say they will be here at 6:00 in a

very large gathering. they say that they will be here every day tat 6:00 until they can -- at 6:00 until they can right take the plaza. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. occupy protesters in san jose are vowing to return after police raided their encampment. officers showed up at 12:30 this morning and issued warnings. police say demonstrators were cooperative and no arrests or citations were issued. protesters say they moved across the street to protect their belongings. we decided to be proactive. instead of taking our stuff and us getting it later, they are talking about confiscating it. >> the one man who has been perched on a wall on a building is still there. he demand a meeting with the mayor.

"occupy san francisco" fears there camps could be broken up. they were given a warning by greg sur. but the protesters vow to stay. the full board will consider the proposal next month. and the occupy movement in walnut creek will rally again. they've been rallying outside the bank of america every wednesday for the past two weeks. tonight they will move to the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. their demonstration is set to begin at the start of the evening commute. and this morning in atlanta police moved in and arrested more than 50 "occupy atlanta" protesters they were camping out in woodruff park in downtown atlanta. police say protesters were warned to vacate the park or be arrested. vincent fort, a georgia state senator, was among them who was arrested. stay tuned to ktvu for all of the occupy protests --

protests. questions are being raised after a high-speed police chase in concord ended in an innocent person's death. it happened yesterday afternoon near highway 242 and grant street. officers tried to pull a man over for talking on a cell phone while driving but he sped off with police in pursuit. the escaping man crashed into another car, killing the driver. officers arrested the suspect but have not released his name or the name of the victim. the highway patrol and the district attorney are investigating the chase and the crash. california's attorney general ka ma law harris is going -- kamala harris is going after the bottled water industry. this is video of one of the companies being sued. the other companies are enzo plastics, in arizona, and the attorney general said they illegally claim their bottles are biodegradable when, in fact, they are damaging natural resources.

the u.s. supreme court could decide as soon as november 10th whether to hear cases about president obama's healthcare reform. if the justices agree during the conference before that to hear any or all of those cases they could announce it that day or wait until they meet in public the following monday, which is november 14th. that would likely be hearing arguments next month for the possibility of a ruling by june. ♪ [ cheers ] >> president obama announced a plan this morning he said is aimed at lowering -- at lowering student loans. he said those payments would lower the payments to 10% of the boar rower's income and to be done away with in 20 years

the animal rescue business. but the city ashelter is not closing down -- but the city's shelter is not closing -- closing down. tara moriarty is live with more. >> reporter: the cats and other animals at the shelter will get to say, thanks to volunteers. actually, not that much will be changing except the eight city employees will be losing their jobs and the animal control staff will be shrinking by half. the shelter workers will be replaced by two part-time employees and volunteers with friends of alameda animal shelter. city officials say the cuts had to be made to trim the city budget. the move will save alameda more than $600,000 a year. steve cooler just adopted a dog today and says he's happy that the shelter is gonna stay open. alameda is a really dog- friendly area. so the city knew it had to keep services here. so when an animal is found stray, the person should have the opportunity to get the

animal back locally. you just make a phone call and come get their pet versus going to another city or jurisdiction. volunteers will feed the animals clean cages, walk dogs. medical services will be contracted out by local vets. police will still take part of animal control complaints and vicious animals. when it comes to budget cuts, don't expect the city to stop at just dogs. it will be relinquishing more services in the coming months. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. days after the deadly turkey earthquake survivers are still being pulled from the rubble. kind. himy in the -- kind of chilly in the bay area. steve will have the forecast. i think it will motivate the kids, it will open them up to new things. >> a bay area school is thinking pink. we'll show you their unique way of raising awareness about the

they found the 1500-square foot building engulfed in flames. the fire went to two alarms in just minutes. firefighters had it contained within an hour. no one was in the building. there were no injuries. officials say the structure is a total loss with $300,000 in damage. the cause of the fire is under investigation. also this morning oakland firefighters quickly put out a one-alarm house fire only to have it flare up again. the fire broke out about 6:30. 20 minutes later, newschopper2 was overhead during the ktvu morning news as light smoke drifted over the 8 400 block of d street. a dispatcher told us crews had to return to the home at 8:30, when the garage started smoldering. the cause is also under investigation and no one was hurt. three days after that devastating earthquake in turkey, survivors are still being found. today, rescue workers digging through piles of rubble rescued three people from a collapsed

building, including an 18-year- old teenager boy -- teenager. but for the most part, officials say the effort has become one of recovering bodies. sunday's 7.2 quake killed at least 460 people and injured more than 1500. about 2,000 buildth collapsed because of the -- buildings collapsed because of the quake. the votes are still being counted in tunisia aelection. it appears there is a winner. tunisia was the first to overthrow its dictator. 90% of the country's registered voters cast ballots. tea party supporters are pushing herman cain to the top of the field of republican presidential contenders. a "new york times/cbs" poll of voters released yesterday has cain leading the pack with 25%.

sanction couples. the claims were made by staffers of gavin newsom. newsom decided to grant those couples licenses in 2004. herrera adamantly denies the allegations and says he's still fighting against proposition 8 which bans same-sex marriage in california. supporters of federal marijuana, they want to impose a regulatory system with state inspections and licensing on medical marijuana providers. they say current efforts by the government to shut down dispensaries are too extreme and call it a slap in the case to voters who voted to legalize the use of medical marijuana in 1996. san jose property owners do be -- could be asked to pay for hundreds of millions of dollars in road repairs. according to a report delivered to the city council yesterday, the city has more than 500 miles of damaged streets like

this one. it's transportation department floated the idea of raising $600 million over ten years to a new parcel tax. a councilman wrote a memo saying the city should not take a new tax to voters until it finishes pension reform. death byms adventure. that's what the coroner in london has declared in the death of amy winehouse. blood and urine samples show the 27-year-old was 4.5 times over the legal drunk driving limit. the coroner says the excessive amount of alcohol is what killed her. an initial autopsy on winehouse was ins con cluneives but it -- incon clune isish -- inconclusive but did not show any illegal drugs. students at john sweat high school in crockett are spur pricing -- surprising their classmates with a cancer awareness day. students from three classes have been secretly planning for today's events.

strong reminder of the devastation a wildfire can cause as they mark the 20th anniversary of the 1991 firestorm. the wind isn't too bad. we had gusts of 50 up to mount diablo. generally its up to 20, 25 miles an hour. it was confined to higher elevations. had a lot of thick fog temperatures this morning. the fog is pretty much gone and the northerly breeze has kicked in for many but not for all. but i think after today by tonight it will turn more easterly than southerly and the northeast wind will be gone. we can see a little bit of fog did you it's disappearing as it goes down the coast. very quiet pattern. this morning, lots of 30s, 40s, 50s and even some 60s. near kenwood, oakmont our observer joe. lima valley was at 38.

36 around santa rosa. danville was down to 39 this morning. novato, palo alto and stanford, and brentwood and yountville were both near 60 for the lows. it just depends where you were. 70 in concord. the napa airport which made it down to 42 then the north wind kicked in is now at 73. mountain view at 71. san jose is close. fairfield also have a north wind. they still do. san rafael was down to 42. mill valley was down to 40 degrees in the city. the city dipped to 49. 66. that 49 in san francisco was the coolest low since june 1st almost five months. if you are in the city, you thought it was cool this morning, there's still a north wind. san jose has a west wind, once this wind starts to move off, that's producing about a foot of snow west of denver. for us, everything stays high and dry. there's no rain in sight. we'll just see a little decrease in some of the fog and

numbers are higher on wall street as a euro plan or details about a euro plan are starting to emerge from a meeting over there. and also there is some good news on housing. there was an increase in new home sales that was announce this morning. the dow is up 132. the nasdaq is up 9. google is increasing demand on users. they've received 15,600 requests for user data during the first half of this year. that's up 10% from the last half of 2010. one-third of the request came from the u.s. government with india, france, germany next. google collects information
