commute. at 6:00 let's go back to the desk. complete bay area news coverage continues and this is channel 2 morning news. it is thursday, this morning, the earthquake we have been talking about and occupied protests as well, we are all over the area and first we want to check in with steve for a look at the weather. we have clear skies, 30s and 40s on the lows sunshine for everybody and all the tweet are starting to come in about the earthquake, 3.6 at 5:36 a.m., and of course we will hear more about it, here is sal. we are looking at the traffic around the bay area and we have 280 here and the south bay, a lot of people have been woken up by the earthquake, a

lot of people woke up and started calling us immediately. it may even be a better commute because the commute may even be more spread out. that traffic is looking good heading to the south bay and at 6:01 let's go back to the desk. they have scrapped the encampment at least for now. claudine wong is at justin herman plaza and has more from -- more reaction from protesters. >> reporter: we had hundreds of people packed into this area and people are now headed back to their tents and the big gathering dissipated as soon as we heard the raid would not happen. several were excited that was the case and although we know this occupied movement is one for the long-term so we don't think the chance of a raid is

over, but they felt it would happen overnight. they were concerned about the health concerns that led to this raid and two days ago, the police chief said we have to come in there because they said it was not sanitary, it was a hazard down there and we want to talk about that and the raid that never happened. >> i think it is an excuse and people are taking care of the space and it is shown even after being threatened from a raid from the cops all night people stayed there and in the end they decided to clean up the camp. you are looking at video of what it looked like at its height. i have been here after midnight and really there are hundreds of people who have been here practicing for the raid that they expected and they were communicating by tweets, a lot of people following around

police caravans and they are keeping everybody updated and when word came the raid would not happen cheers erupted from the crowd. they did cleanup, they wept the area and they are hoping when they come back, they will say, it is fine you can clear. they said they did not want police to take this encampment away so the story of occupied -- the story of the occupied movement continues. meanwhile, the occupied movement continues across the bay... >> we don't want any of you getting hurt... >> protesters tore down the fence at frank ogawa plaza police had put up earlier in the day. this came as more than 1,000 demonstrators marched through

elementary schools at the end of this school year. the schools that will close are lakeview marshal, maxwell park and santa fe. there was a march for a final hearing before that vote, 500 parents teachers and students attended that meeting to try and save their schools but the school district says the closures are necessary because of declines in enrollment and cuts in state funding. there are more schools to be closed or merged next year. last night that school board spared shane none elementary and they have been on a list of possible closures. telling us in ktvu channel 2 news, the district has been managing itself and its moneywisely and can keep both

schools open. world stock markets are up after getting word european leaders agreed to a bailout plan for greece. coming up, a live report from our washington d.c. room why this agreement is welcomed news here in the united states. we had an earthquake and i know you felt it in the east bay 5:36 this morning, it was centered two miles east of berkeley. also the lake tahoe reno area was also shaking overnight from an earthquake. it was a magnitude 4.7 which hid shortly after 11:30 and that was centered over the area. however residents flooded the area with calls and this one was as far away as sacramento, people were jolted out of bed at 11:30 at night.

dozens of officers had streamed off poised and ready to go, they got off, went to their own cars some went to their individual stations and a lot of them it was the end of their shift since they had been on that shift since 5:00 last night. we heard from protesters saying what a waste of resources and money this was. they were actually texting protesters letting them know if and when officers were leaving. we also saw public health officials who had been cleaning up where they had been living for the past three weeks. the mayor said the plaza had become a health problem, camping sleeping open fires public urinating did he have kateing and the -- did he have kateing -- feces and the use of pro pain tanks and now officers

civilians. time now, new this morning european leaders have reached a critical agreement to deal with the debt crisis. allison burns is live where congress will hold a hearing about what it all means for the united states. allison? >> reporter: dave with economic recovery around the world on the line obama administration has been pressing european leaders for a breakthrough and now it looks like there is one. urine peanut leaders agreed after a 12 hour meeting in bus sells to rescue greece from defaulting on its debts. the plan means they will take losses up to 50% but also boosts the bailout fund to help other struggling countries like italy and spain. treasury department officials have been saying, resolving the crisis is critical for the

luggage. they took disciplinary action against that employee. he will release a proposal by the end of the year to save the system. he voted against tuition increases at both california and the california university assistance. he said without of the box thinking theres a way to keep college affordable even in tight budget times. the san francisco ash much diocese -- archdiocese will hold back, a tip led to release of the bill near a salvage yard in west oakland and police believe metal thieves stole it and planned to melt it down and sell copper. they hope the owners of the scrap yard may know about the shift. it was cast in 1889 and weighs more than 2. 5 tons.

6:19 is the time let's check in with sal for traffic. right now traffic is relatively quiet except for one thing and that would be a crash in oakland. northbound 880 at 23rd and the other is near the coliseum so this area of oakland is not all that great, you may want to get on 880 but the back up from the stuff north has not reached the coliseum yet and they are making progress with those accidents. let's move along and look at the westbound bay bridge. metering lights went on five minutes ago and now there is a ten minute delay at the toll plaza. we have a situation and yesterday we had that wind or 60 degrees temperatures and it is clear and for some it is very cool out there. a lot of 30s and 40s and we

will end up with some weather. and the magnitude 3.6 earthquake felt stronger than that pam and i were saying. 34 in napa, 34 san rafael and 53, yesterday they were 49 everything up and over, high pressure is here to stay for the next few days. sunny and warm conditions, wind has tailed off, 60s and 70s and almost everybody will be close on temperatures to mid-70s for some. with your weekend always in view, dry sunday to monday and that will start to work its way back. well the latest unemployment numbers are slightly better than expected.

was centered a mile east of berkeley, 6 miles deep and it's in the area along the hayward falls and so we had received a number of calls into the newsroom as well as on our facebook site. we received comments from throughout the bay area dublin and san francisco, they say their couch danced while they were watching us. it rolled one way and their puppy was wondering was it an earthquake. josh was wondering and he thought his turtle thank would fall -- tank would fall off its stand. they thought it was stronger than a 3.6 magnitude and i have to be honest we thought it was stronger too. update us throughout the morning and we would love to hear from you. time now 6:31 occupied

protesters are holding their ground and san francisco called off a raid at herman plaza however they may not be able to claim victory just yet. we have team coverage of the ongoing situation and kraig debro is there where they are planning a big event. let's start with claudine wong who is at the plaza, claudine what is going on out there? >> reporter: well you can see behind me the dozens of tents that have sprouted up in this area and most of the protesters are getting some rest because they spent all night out here waiting for the raid that never happened. >> i think i am exhausted and happy with how people communicated and worked together and i think it had to do with the report of supervisors and union workers supporting us and it would be

well a handful of protesters are live there and they are planning their next big move, kraig debro joins us with more. it is tuesday when a general strike is called and behind me there is some noise, water blast terrible is to help keep -- blaster is here to help keep the area clean and they have sent this to iraqi war veteran and obviously they have a picture of him right after he was hit but they have a tent still set up despite the low numbers, they are keeping the candle lit to fighting another night. some of the movement took

pieces of torn down chain link fence tore the structure down but that decision was far from unanimous. those opposed of taking down the fence might have a problem with the message. >> if you go in there and there is a riot that goes on... >> we lived there... ooh it is not about the grass, it is about the protests and people want to make a point and peacefully assemble so it will be just like last night again. >> that was a reference for what happened last night with scott olson. they did put it to use and members felt the structure on the north eyed of the plaza and of course a general strike for students and workers being called for november 2nd.

there long enough and they can't stay there forever and although it makes for good television, they does not think it is working. >> let them be, and if you have more you want to say, log on to our facebook team page. a man sexually assaulting a woman on skyline college, it happened tuesday night and the victim tells police she was alone in a classroom when a man came in and attacked her. he fled the room and is described as a white male with an athletic build tattoo or scar on his neck. the man accused of a richmond gang rape could be moved out of contra costa county. they could prevent the men from

having a fair trial. the six are accused of beating and raping a 16-year-old girl just outside a homecoming dance. yesterday they pled not guilty and their trial is tentatively set up. they are using this to go to san jose. they plan to sell five acres to the oakland a's for $6.9 million. an appraisal put the land's value at $14 million. the city pent 25 -- spent 25 million on the land and the city council is expected to vote on that issue next months. nothing major pam and dave, he is special limb at the toll plaza, people want to know about it because it takes a while to get through it here at

. here is a look at some of the top stories, we have not heard any reports of injuries or damage but this morning's earthquake shook people up about an hour ago. it was a magnitude 6.6 quake and hit a mile east of berkeley at 5:36 this morning. we were on the air talking when it happened. a lot of viewers say the quake was not as strong as last week's quake but it really gave them a volt this morning. stock markets are up after european leaders have agreed to cut the deal of greece. the european country could

default and it could drag down global stocks. unoccupied protesters tore down a fence that police had put up earlier in the day. this came as more than 1,000 demonstrators marched through downtown oakland and with only a handful of demonstrators still camped out at oakland city hall. they called off the raid at least for now, following this story, tara moriarty has more on what officers were told two hours ago, tara? >> reporter: apparently they were told to leave and the chief was actually out of town and he was not due to come back until tonight so many officers thought this raid would definitely go down. this was a staging area and officers are now gone just before 5:00 because they began

to scream off. police cut off someone from their individuals and we heard a lot of protesters saying what a waste of money it was for resources and they were texting them letting them know what was going on. they were planning on cleaning up the area where protesters had been living for the past three weeks. mayor ed lee says the area had to be cleaned out. they warned protesters they were be arrested, noted vialsels public urinating and littering and so we are not sure when the raid will happen and they say it will happen in the next few days but officers in san francisco as well as

running a high of 70 in downtown san francisco. i am going to deflect everything and send it way north. next week is going to look cooler and next weekend we may be talking about rain. for many upper 60s to lower 70s everybody is close around 75 degrees, i had a nice tweet from jessica and she said what is the weather like and i said 72 and that should cover the spread for everyone. santa cruz should be gorgeous, woodside and 60s on the coast, you will lose that east wind but it will still be sunny and nice. sunshine plenty to go around, maybe cooler and that fog will start to work its way back and temperatures will be quite pleasant sunday and monday. the economy grew following

. welcome back to the morning news, dow jones industrial average up 235 point, visa reports profits are up, exxon mobile reports profits are up and economy grew over the summer and that's pumping up stocks this morning. governor jerry brown will announce his plan to overhaul the public retirement system. his proposal will raise the retirement age for most new employees and all workers would have to pay more towards retirement and healthcare and it would save $900 million a year. he asks lawmakers to approve his plan and then put it on the

ballot for voters to weigh in. bart board will decide on a new policy when to cut off cell phone service. they were criticized for shutting down service with an effort to block off cell phone service and they say they would only shut off cell phone service that threaten lives or property which includes a terrorist attack. the board will meet at 9:00 this morning. some ingredients added to food, reports show they were deemed safe by the manufacturer's association. those include grape seed extract and artificially since that sized -- artificially made -- artificially made ingredients. they will have more on how they came up with the decision on
